1 Now Sarah lived for one hundred and twenty-seven years.	1 Als Sara nun ihr Leben auf hundertundsiebenundzwanzig Jahre gebracht hatte,
2 And she died in the city of Arba, which is Hebron, in the land of Canaan. And Abraham came to mourn and weep for her.	2 starb sie in Kirjath-Arba, das ist Hebron, im Lande Kanaan. Da ging Abraham hinein, um Sara zu beklagen und zu beweinen.
3 And when he had risen up from the funeral duties, he spoke to the sons of Heth, saying:	3 Hierauf stand Abraham von der Seite seiner Verstorbenen auf und verhandelte mit den Hethitern so:
4 “I am a newcomer and a sojourner among you. Give me the right of a sepulcher among you, so that I may bury my dead.”	4 »Ich bin (nur) ein Fremdling und Beisasse (d.h. Gast ohne Grundbesitz) hier bei euch: überlaßt mir doch ein Erbbegräbnis bei euch, damit ich meine Tote, die in meinem Hause liegt, begraben kann!«
5 The sons of Heth responded by saying:	5 Die Hethiter gaben dem Abraham folgende Antwort:
6 “Hear us, O lord, you are a leader of God among us. Bury your dead in our chosen sepulchers. And no man shall be able to prohibit you from burying your dead within his memorial.”	6 »Höre uns an, Herr! Du lebst hier als ein Gottesfürst unter uns: begrabe deine Tote in dem besten von unsern Gräbern: keiner von uns wird dir seine Grabstätte zur Bestattung deiner Toten versagen.«
7 Abraham arose, and he reverenced the people of the land, namely, the sons of Heth.	7 Da erhob sich Abraham, verneigte sich tief vor den Bewohnern des Landes, den Hethitern,
8 And he said to them: “If it pleases your soul that I should bury my dead, hear me, and intercede on my behalf with Ephron, the son of Zohar,	8 und sagte weiter zu ihnen: »Wenn ihr damit einverstanden seid, daß ich meine Tote, die in meinem Hause liegt, hier begrabe, so erweist mir die Liebe und legt ein gutes Wort für mich bei Ephron, dem Sohne Zohars, ein,
9 so that he may give me the double cave, which he has at the far end of his field. He may transfer it to me for as much money as it is worth in your sight, for the possession of a sepulcher.”	9 daß er mir die Höhle in der Machpela überläßt, die ihm gehört und am Ende seines Feldes liegt; für den vollen Wert möge er sie mir zu einem Erbbegräbnis hier in eurer Mitte überlassen!«
10 Now Ephron dwelt in the midst of the sons of Heth. And Ephron responded to Abraham in the hearing of everyone who was entering at the gate of his city, saying:	10 Nun saß Ephron mitten unter den Hethitern und gab dem Abraham vor den versammelten Hethitern im Beisein aller, die ins Tor seiner Stadt gekommen waren, folgende Antwort:
11 “Let it never be so, my lord, but you should pay greater heed to what I say. The field I will transfer to you, and the cave that is in it. In the presence of the sons of my people, bury your dead.”	11 »Nicht doch, Herr! Höre mich an! Das Feld (oder: Grundstück) schenke ich dir; auch die Höhle darauf schenke ich dir; im Beisein meiner Volksgenossen schenke ich sie dir: begrabe nur deine Tote!«
12 Abraham reverenced in the sight of the people of the land.	12 Da verneigte sich Abraham tief vor den Bewohnern des Landes
13 And he spoke to Ephron, standing in the midst of the people: “I ask you to hear me. I will give you money for the field. Take it, and so I will bury my dead in it.”	13 und sagte dann zu Ephron, im Beisein aller Bewohner des Landes: »O doch! Wenn du mich nur anhören wolltest! Ich zahle dir den Preis für das Grundstück: nimm ihn von mir an, so will ich meine Tote dort begraben!«
14 And Ephron responded: “My lord, hear me.	14 Darauf antwortete Ephron dem Abraham:
15 The land that you request is worth four hundred shekels of silver. This is the price between me and you. But how much is this? Bury your dead.”	15 »Höre mich doch an, Herr! Ein Stück Land im Wert von vierhundert Schekel Silber – was will das zwischen mir und dir besagen?! Begrabe nur deine Tote!«
16 And when Abraham had heard this, he weighed out the money that Ephron had requested, in the hearing of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, of the approved public currency.	16 Abraham nahm die Forderung Ephrons an und wog ihm den Kaufpreis dar, den Betrag, welchen jener im Beisein der Hethiter gefordert hatte, nämlich vierhundert Schekel Silber, nach der beim Kauf und Verkauf üblichen Währung.
17 And having confirmed that the field, in which there was a double cave overlooking Mamre, formerly belonged to Ephron, both it and the sepulcher, and all its trees, with all its surrounding limits,	17 So wurde das Grundstück Ephrons, das in der Machpela östlich von Mamre lag, das Feld samt der Höhle darauf nebst allen Bäumen, die auf dem Grundstück in seinem ganzen Umfang ringsum standen,
18 Abraham took it as a possession, in the sight of the sons of Heth and of everyone who was entering at the gate of his city.	18 dem Abraham rechtskräftig als Eigentum abgetreten im Beisein der Hethiter, so viele ihrer ins Tor seiner Stadt gekommen waren.
19 So then, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the double cave of the field that overlooked Mamre. This is Hebron in the land of Canaan.	19 Hierauf begrub Abraham seine Frau Sara in der Höhle auf dem Grundstück in der Machpela östlich von Mamre, das ist Hebron, im Lande Kanaan.
20 And the field was confirmed to Abraham, with the cave that was in it, as a memorial possession before the sons of Heth.	20 So wurde das Grundstück samt der Höhle darauf dem Abraham als Erbbegräbnis von den Hethitern rechtskräftig überlassen.
