NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Such by God's mercy is our ministry, and therefore we do not waver1 Ideo habentes administrationem, juxta quod misericordiam consecuti sumus, non deficimus,
but have renounced al shameful secrecy. It is not our way to be devious, or to falsify the word of God;instead, in God's sight we commend ourselves to every human being with a conscience by showing the truthopenly.2 sed abdicamus occulta dedecoris, non ambulantes in astutia, neque adulterantes verbum Dei, sed in manifestatione veritatis commendantes nosmetipsos ad omnem conscientiam hominum coram Deo.
If our gospel seems to be veiled at al , it is so to those who are on the way to destruction,3 Quod si etiam opertum est Evangelium nostrum, in iis, qui pereunt, est opertum :
the unbelievers whose minds have been blinded by the god of this world, so that they cannot seeshining the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.4 in quibus Deus hujus sæculi excæcavit mentes infidelium, ut non fulgeat illis illuminatio Evangelii gloriæ Christi, qui est imago Dei.
It is not ourselves that we are proclaiming, but Christ Jesus as the Lord, and ourselves as your servantsfor Jesus' sake.5 Non enim nosmetipsos prædicamus, sed Jesum Christum Dominum nostrum : nos autem servos vestros per Jesum :
It is God who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' that has shone into our hearts to enlighten themwith the knowledge of God's glory, the glory on the face of Christ.6 quoniam Deus, qui dixit de tenebris lucem splendescere, ipse illuxit in cordibus nostris ad illuminationem scientiæ claritatis Dei, in facie Christi Jesu.
But we hold this treasure in pots of earthenware, so that the immensity of the power is God's and notour own.7 Habemus autem thesaurum istum in vasis fictilibus : ut sublimitas sit virtutis Dei, et non ex nobis.
We are subjected to every kind of hardship, but never distressed; we see no way out but we neverdespair;8 In omnibus tribulationem patimur, sed non angustiamur : aporiamur, sed non destituimur :
we are pursued but never cut off; knocked down, but stil have some life in us;9 persecutionem patimur, sed non derelinquimur : dejicimur, sed non perimus :
always we carry with us in our body the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus, too, may be visible inour body.10 semper mortificationem Jesu in corpore nostro circumferentes, ut et vita Jesu manifestetur in corporibus nostris.
Indeed, while we are stil alive, we are continually being handed over to death, for the sake of Jesus,so that the life of Jesus, too, may be visible in our mortal flesh.11 Semper enim nos, qui vivimus, in mortem tradimur propter Jesum : ut et vita Jesu manifestetur in carne nostra mortali.
In us, then, death is at work; in you, life.12 Ergo mors in nobis operatur, vita autem in vobis.
But as we have the same spirit of faith as is described in scripture -- I believed and therefore I spoke-we, too, believe and therefore we, too, speak,13 Habentes autem eumdem spiritum fidei, sicut scriptum est : Credidi, propter quod locutus sum : et nos credimus, propter quod et loquimur :
realising that he who raised up the Lord Jesus wil raise us up with Jesus in our turn, and bring us tohimself -- and you as wel .14 scientes quoniam qui suscitavit Jesum, et nos cum Jesu suscitabit, et constituet vobiscum.
You see, everything is for your benefit, so that as grace spreads, so, to the glory of God, thanksgivingmay also overflow among more and more people.15 Omnia enim propter vos : ut gratia abundans, per multos in gratiarum actione, abundet in gloriam Dei.
That is why we do not waver; indeed, though this outer human nature of ours may be fal ing intodecay, at the same time our inner human nature is renewed day by day.16 Propter quod non deficimus : sed licet is, qui foris est, noster homo corrumpatur, tamen is, qui intus est, renovatur de die in diem.
The temporary, light burden of our hardships is earning us for ever an utterly incomparable, eternalweight of glory,17 Id enim, quod in præsenti est momentaneum et leve tribulationis nostræ, supra modum in sublimitate æternum gloriæ pondus operatur in nobis,
since what we aim for is not visible but invisible. Visible things are transitory, but invisible thingseternal.18 non contemplantibus nobis quæ videntur, sed quæ non videntur. Quæ enim videntur, temporalia sunt : quæ autem non videntur, æterna sunt.
