1 When it had been decided that we should sail to Italy, Paul and some other prisoners were handedover to a centurion cal ed Julius, of the Augustan cohort.	1 Cuando se decidió que nos embarcásemos rumbo a Italia, fueron confiados Pablo y algunos otros prisioneros a un centurión de la cohorte Augusta, llamado Julio.
2 We boarded a vessel from Adramyttium bound for ports on the Asiatic coast and put to sea; we hadAristarchus with us, a Macedonian of Thessalonica.	2 Subimos a una nave de Adramitio, que iba a partir hacia las costas de Asia, y nos hicimos a la mar. Estaba con nosotros Aristarco, macedonio de Tesalónica.
3 Next day we put in at Sidon, and Julius was considerate enough to al ow Paul to go to his friends to belooked after.	3 Al otro día arribamos a Sidón. Julio se portó humanamente con Pablo y le permitió ir a ver a sus amigos y ser atendido por ellos.
4 From there we put to sea again, but as the winds were against us we sailed under the lee of Cyprus,	4 Partimos de allí y navegamos al abrigo de las costas de Chipre, porque los vientos eran contrarios.
5 then across the open sea off Cilicia and Pamphylia, taking a fortnight to reach Myra in Lycia.	5 Atravesamos los mares de Cilicia y Panfilia y llegamos al cabo de quince días a Mira de Licia.
6 There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship leaving for Italy and put us aboard.	6 Allí encontró el centurión una nave alejandrina que navegaba a Italia, y nos hizo subir a bordo.
7 For some days we made little headway, and we had difficulty in making Cnidus. The wind would notal ow us to touch there, so we sailed under the lee of Crete off Cape Salmone	7 Durante muchos días la navegación fue lenta y a duras penas llegamos a la altura de Gnido. Como el viento no nos dejaba entrar en puerto, navegamos al abrigo de Creta por la parte de Salmone;
8 and struggled along the coast until we came to a place called Fair Havens, near the town of Lasea.	8 y costeándola con dificultad, llegamos a un lugar llamado Puertos Buenos, cerca del cual se encuentra la ciudad de Lasea.
9 A great deal of time had been lost, and navigation was already hazardous, since it was now wel afterthe time of the Fast, so Paul gave them this warning,	9 Había transcurrido bastante tiempo y la navegación era peligrosa, pues incluso había ya pasado el Ayuno. Pablo les advertía:
10 'Friends, I can see this voyage will be dangerous and that we wil run considerable risk of losing notonly the cargo and the ship but also our lives as well.'	10 «Amigos, veo que la navegación va a traer gran peligro y grave daño no sólo para el cargamento y la nave, sino también para nuestras propias personas».
11 But the centurion took more notice of the captain and the ship's owner than of what Paul was saying;	11 Pero el centurión daba más crédito al piloto y al patrón que no a las palabras de Pablo.
12 and since the harbour was unsuitable for wintering, the majority were for putting out from there in thehope of wintering at Phoenix -- a harbour in Crete, facing south-west and north-west.	12 Como el puerto no era a propósito para invernar, la mayoría decidió hacerse a la mar desde allí, por si era posible llegar a Fénica, un puerto de Creta que mira al suroeste y al noroeste, y pasar allí el invierno.
13 A southerly breeze sprang up and, thinking their objective as good as reached, they weighed anchorand began to sail past Crete, close inshore.	13 Soplaba ligeramente entonces el viento del sur y creyeron que podían poner en práctica su propósito; levaron anclas y fueron costeando Creta de cerca.
14 But it was not long before a hurricane, the 'north-easter' as they cal it, burst on them from across theisland.	14 Pero no mucho después se desencadenó un viento huracanado procedente de la isla, llamado Euroaquilón.
15 The ship was caught and could not keep head to wind, so we had to give way to the wind and letourselves be driven.	15 La nave fue arrastrada y, no pudiendo hacer frente al viento, nos abandonamos a la deriva .
16 We ran under the lee of a smal island called Cauda and managed with some difficulty to bring theship's boat under control.	16 Navegando a sotavento de una isleta llamada Cauda, pudimos con mucha dificultad hacernos con el bote.
17 Having hauled it up they used it to undergird the ship; then, afraid of running aground on the Syrtisbanks, they floated out the sea-anchor and so let themselves drift.	17 Una vez izado el bote se emplearon los cables de refuerzo, ciñendo el casco por debajo; y por miedo a chocar contra la Sirte, se echó el ancla flotante. Así se iba a la deriva.
18 As we were thoroughly storm-bound, the next day they began to jettison the cargo,	18 Y como el temporal seguía sacudiéndonos furiosamente, al día siguiente aligeraron la nave.
19 and the third day they threw the ship's gear overboard with their own hands.	19 Y al tercer día con sus propias manos arrojaron al mar el aparejo de la nave.
20 For a number of days both the sun and the stars were invisible and the storm raged unabated until atlast we gave up al hope of surviving.	20 Durante muchos días no apareció el sol ni las estrellas; teníamos sobre nosotros una tempestad no pequeña; toda esperanza de salvarnos iba desapareciendo.
21 Then, when they had been without food for a long time, Paul stood up among the men. 'Friends,' hesaid, 'you should have listened to me and not put out from Crete. You would have spared yourselves al thisdamage and loss.	21 Hacía ya días que no habíamos comido; entonces Pablo se puso en medio de ellos y les dijo: «Amigos, más hubiera valido que me hubierais escuchado y no haberos hecho a la mar desde Creta; os hubierais ahorrado este peligro y esta pérdida.
22 But now I ask you not to give way to despair. There wil be no loss of life at al , only of the ship.	22 Pero ahora os recomiendo que tengáis buen ánimo; ninguna de vuestras vidas se perderá; solamente la nave.
23 Last night there appeared beside me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve,	23 Pues esta noche se me ha presentado un ángel del Dios a quien pertenezco y a quien doy culto,
24 and he said, "Do not be afraid, Paul. You are destined to appear before Caesar, and God grants youthe safety of al who are sailing with you."	24 y me ha dicho: “No temas, Pablo; tienes que comparecer ante el César; y mira, Dios te ha concedido la vida de todos los que navegan contigo.”
25 So take courage, friends; I trust in God that things will turn out just as I was told;	25 Por tanto, amigos, ¡ánimo! Yo tengo fe en Dios de que sucederá tal como se me ha dicho.
26 but we are to be stranded on some island.'	26 Iremos a dar en alguna isla».
27 On the fourteenth night we were being driven one way and another in the Adriatic, when aboutmidnight the crew sensed that land of some sort was near.	27 Era ya la décima cuarta noche que íbamos a la deriva por el Adriático, cuando hacia la media noche presintieron los marineros la proximidad de tierra.
28 They took soundings and found twenty fathoms; after a short interval they sounded again and foundfifteen fathoms.	28 Sondearon y hallaron veinte brazas; un poco más lejos sondearon de nuevo y hallaron quince brazas.
29 Then, afraid that we might run aground somewhere on a reef, they dropped four anchors from thestern and prayed for daylight.	29 Temerosos de que fuésemos a chocar contra algunos escollos, echaron cuatro anclas desde la popa y esperaban ansiosamente que se hiciese de día.
30 When the crew tried to escape from the ship and lowered the ship's boat into the sea as though theymeant to lay out anchors from the bows, Paul said to the centurion and his men,	30 Los marineros intentaban escapar de la nave, y estaban ya arriando el bote con el pretexto de echar los cables de las anclas de proa.
31 'Unless those men stay on board you cannot hope to be saved.'	31 Pero Pablo dijo al centurión y a los soldados: «Si no se quedan éstos en la nave, vosotros no os podréis salvar».
32 So the soldiers cut the boat's ropes and let it drop away.	32 Entonces los soldados cortaron las amarras del bote y lo dejaron caer.
33 Just before daybreak Paul urged them al to have something to eat. 'For fourteen days', he said, 'youhave been in suspense, going hungry and eating nothing.	33 Mientras esperaban que se hiciera de día, Pablo aconsejaba a todos que tomasen alimento diciendo: «Hace ya catorce días que, en continua expectación, estáis en ayunas, sin haber comido nada.
34 I urge you to have something to eat; your safety depends on it. Not a hair of any of your heads wil belost.'	34 Por eso os aconsejo que toméis alimento, pues os conviene para vuestra propia salvación; que ninguno de vosotros perderá ni un solo cabello de su cabeza».
35 With these words he took some bread, gave thanks to God in view of them al , broke it and began toeat.	35 Diciendo esto, tomó pan, dio gracias a Dios en presencia de todos, lo partió y se puso a comer.
36 They al plucked up courage and took something to eat themselves.	36 Entonces todos los demás se animaron y tomaron también alimento.
37 In al we were two hundred and seventy-six souls on board that ship.	37 Estábamos en total en la nave 276 personas.
38 When they had eaten what they wanted they lightened the ship by throwing the corn overboard intothe sea.	38 Una vez satisfechos, aligeraron la nave arrojando el trigo al mar.
39 When day came they did not recognise the land, but they could make out a bay with a beach; theyplanned to run the ship aground on this if they could.	39 Cuando vino el día, los marineros no reconocían la tierra; solamente podían divisar una ensenada con su playa; y resolvieron lanzar la nave hacia ella, si fuera posible.
40 They slipped the anchors and let them fal into the sea, and at the same time loosened the lashings ofthe rudders; then, hoisting the foresail to the wind, they headed for the beach.	40 Soltaron las anclas que dejaron caer al mar; aflojaron al mismo tiempo las ataduras de los timones; depués izaron al viento la vela artimón y pusieron rumbo a la playa.
41 But the cross-currents carried them into a shoal and the vessel ran aground. The bows were wedgedin and stuck fast, while the stern began to break up with the pounding of the waves.	41 Pero tropezaron contra un lugar con mar por ambos lados, y encallaron allí la nave; la proa clavada, quedó inmóvil; en cambio la popa, sacudida violentamente, se iba deshaciendo.
42 The soldiers planned to kil the prisoners for fear that any should swim off and escape.	42 Los soldados entonces resolvieron matar a los presos, no fuera que alguno se escapase a nado;
43 But the centurion was determined to bring Paul safely through and would not let them carry out theirplan. He gave orders that those who could swim should jump overboard first and so get ashore,	43 pero el centurión, que quería salvar a Pablo, se opuso a su designio y dio orden de que los que supieran nadar se arrojasen los primeros al agua y ganasen la orilla;
44 and the rest fol ow either on planks or on pieces of wreckage. In this way it happened that al camesafe and sound to land.	44 y los demás saliesen unos sobre tablones, otros sobre los despojos de la nave. De esta forma todos llegamos a tierra sanos y salvos.
