NEW JERUSALEMSAGRADA BIBLIA
It was about this time that King Herod started persecuting certain members of the church.1 Por aquele mesmo tempo, o rei Herodes mandou prender alguns membros da Igreja para os maltratar.
He had James the brother of John beheaded,2 Assim foi que matou à espada Tiago, irmão de João.
and when he saw that this pleased the Jews he went on to arrest Peter as wel .3 Vendo que isto agradava aos judeus, mandou prender Pedro. Eram então os dias dos pães sem fermento.
As it was during the days of Unleavened Bread that he had arrested him, he put him in prison, assigning four sections of four soldiers each to guard him, meaning to try him in public after the Passover.4 Mandou prendê-lo e lançou-o no cárcere, entregando-o à guarda de quatro grupos, de quatro soldados cada um, com a intenção de apresentá-lo ao povo depois da Páscoa.
Al the time Peter was under guard the church prayed to God for him unremittingly.5 Pedro estava assim encerrado na prisão, mas a Igreja orava sem cessar por ele a Deus.
On the night before Herod was to try him, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with twochains, while guards kept watch at the main entrance to the prison.6 Ora, quando Herodes estava para o apresentar, naquela mesma noite dormia Pedro entre dois soldados, ligado com duas cadeias. Os guardas, à porta, vigiavam o cárcere.
Then suddenly an angel of the Lord stood there, and the cel was fil ed with light. He tapped Peter onthe side and woke him. 'Get up!' he said, 'Hurry!' -- and the chains fel from his hands.7 De repente, apresentou-se um anjo do Senhor, e uma luz brilhou no recinto. Tocando no lado de Pedro, o anjo despertou-o: Levanta-te depressa, disse ele. Caíram-lhe as cadeias das mãos.
The angel then said, 'Put on your belt and sandals.' After he had done this, the angel next said, 'Wrapyour cloak round you and fol ow me.'8 O anjo ordenou: Cinge-te e calça as tuas sandálias. Ele assim o fez. O anjo acrescentou: Cobre-te com a tua capa e segue-me.
He followed him out, but had no idea that what the angel did was all happening in reality; he thought hewas seeing a vision.9 Pedro saiu e seguiu-o, sem saber se era real o que se fazia por meio do anjo. Julgava estar sonhando.
They passed through the first guard post and then the second and reached the iron gate leading tothe city. This opened of its own accord; they went through it and had walked the whole length of one street whensuddenly the angel left him.10 Passaram o primeiro e o segundo postos da guarda. Chegaram ao portão de ferro, que dá para a cidade, o qual se lhes abriu por si mesmo. Saíram e tomaram juntos uma rua. Em seguida, de súbito, o anjo desapareceu.
It was only then that Peter came to himself. And he said, 'Now I know it is all true. The Lord real y didsend his angel and save me from Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.'11 Então Pedro tornou a si e disse: Agora vejo que o Senhor mandou verdadeiramente o seu anjo e me livrou da mão de Herodes e de tudo o que esperava o povo dos judeus.
As soon as he realised this he went straight to the house of Mary the mother of John Mark, where anumber of people had assembled and were praying.12 Refletiu um momento e dirigiu-se para a casa de Maria, mãe de João, que tem por sobrenome Marcos, onde muitos se tinham reunido e faziam oração.
He knocked at the outside door and a servant called Rhoda came to answer it.13 Quando bateu à porta de entrada, uma criada, chamada Rode, adiantou-se para escutar.
She recognised Peter's voice and was so overcome with joy that, instead of opening the door, she raninside with the news that Peter was standing at the main entrance.14 Mal reconheceu a voz de Pedro, de tanta alegria não abriu a porta, mas, correndo para dentro, foi anunciar que era Pedro que estava à porta.
They said to her, 'You are out of your mind,' but she insisted that it was true. Then they said, 'It mustbe his angel!'15 Disseram-lhe: Estás louca! Mas ela persistia em afirmar que era verdade. Diziam eles: Então é o seu anjo.
Peter, meanwhile, was stil knocking. When they opened the door, they were amazed to see that itreal y was Peter himself.16 Pedro continuava a bater. Afinal abriram a porta, viram-no e ficaram atônitos.
He raised his hand for silence and described to them how the Lord had led him out of prison. Headded, 'Tell James and the brothers.'
When daylight came there was a great commotion among the soldiers, who could not imagine whathad become of Peter.18 Logo que amanheceu, houve um sobressalto pouco comum entre os soldados sobre o que acontecera a Pedro.
Herod put out an unsuccessful search for him; he had the guards questioned, and before leavingJudaea to take up residence in Caesarea he gave orders for their execution.19 Herodes, procurando-o e não o achando, instaurou um processo contra os guardas e mandou supliciá-los. Em seguida, desceu da Judéia para Cesaréia, onde permaneceu.
Now Herod was on bad terms with the Tyrians and Sidonians. Yet they sent a joint deputation whichmanaged to enlist the support of Blastus, the king's chamberlain, and through him negotiated a treaty, since theircountry depended for its food supply on the king's territory.20 Estava Herodes em conflito com os habitantes de Tiro e de Sidônia. Estes, porém, de comum acordo, se apresentaram a ele, e, com o favor de Blasto, que era camareiro do rei, pediram a paz. {Porque a sua região era abastecida por ele.}
A day was fixed, and Herod, wearing his robes of state and seated on a throne, began to make aspeech to them.21 No dia marcado, Herodes, vestido em traje real, sentou-se no tribunal e lhes dirigiu uma alocução.
The people acclaimed him with, 'It is a god speaking, not a man!'22 O povo aplaudia: É a voz de um deus, e não de um homem!
and at that moment the angel of the Lord struck him down, because he had not given the glory toGod. He was eaten away by worms and died.23 No mesmo instante, o anjo do Senhor o feriu, por ele não haver dado honra a Deus. E, roído de vermes, expirou.
The word of God continued to spread and to gain fol owers.24 Entretanto, a palavra de Deus crescia e se espalhava sempre mais.
Barnabas and Saul completed their task at Jerusalem and came back, bringing John Mark with them.25 Tendo Barnabé e Saulo concluído a sua missão, voltaram de Jerusalém {a Antioquia}, levando consigo João, que tem por sobrenome Marcos.
