1 'To their brothers, the Jews living in Egypt, from their brothers, the Jews in Jerusalem and Judaea,greetings and untroubled peace.	1 Ai fratelli Giudei, che sono nell'Egitto, i fratelli Giudei di Gerusalemme, e della Giudea, salute, e pace sincera.
2 'May God prosper you, remembering his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, his faithfulservants.	2 Vi conceda Dio le sue grazie, e si ricordi dell'alleanza fatta con Abramo, e Isacco, e Giacobbe suoi servi fedeli:
3 May he give you al a heart to worship him and to do his will with a generous mind and a wil ing spirit.	3 E dia a tutti voi un cuore per adorarlo, e per fare la sua volontà di gran cuore, e con animo volonteroso.
4 May he open your hearts to his Law and his precepts, and give you peace.	4 Apra egli il cuor vostro alla intelligenza della sua legge, e de' suoi comandamenti, e dia la pace.
5 May he hear your prayers and be reconciled with you, and not abandon you in time of evil.	5 Esaudisca le vostre preghiere, e si plachi con voi, e non vi abbandoni nel cattivo tempo.
6 Such is our prayer for you.	6 E noi siamo, qui facendo preghiere per voi.
7 'During the reign of Demetrius, in the year 169, we Jews wrote to you as fol ows, "In the extremity oftrouble that befel us in the years after Jason and his associates had betrayed the Holy Land and the kingdom,	7 Sotto il regno di Demetrio l'anno cento sessantanove noi Giudei scrivemmo a voi intorno alla tribolazione, e alle violenze, che ci assalirono in quegli anni, dopo che Giasone se n'andò dalla terra santa, e dal regno.
8 burning down the Temple gateway and shedding innocent blood, we prayed to the Lord and were thenheard. And we then offered a sacrifice, with wheat-flour, we lit the lamps and we set out the loaves."	8 Furono abbruciate le porte (del tempio), fu sparso il sangue innocente, ma facemmo ricorso a Dio, e fummo esauditi, e offerimmo il sagrifizio, e l'oblazione, di fior di farina, e accendemmo le lucerne, o ponemmo i pani sopra la mensa.
9 'And we now recommend you too to keep the feast of Shelters in the month of Chislev, in the year onehundred and eighty-eight.'	9 Ora voi celebrate i giorni de' tabernacoli nel mese di Casleu.
10 'The people of Jerusalem and of Judaea, the senate and Judas, to Aristobulus, tutor to King Ptolemyand one of the family of the anointed priests, and to the Jews in Egypt, greetings and good health.	10 L'anno cento ottant'otto il popolo di Gerusalemme, e della Giudea, e il Senato, e Giuda ad Aristobolo precettore del re Tolomeo, il quale è della stirpe de' sacerdoti sacri, e a' Giudei dell'Egitto, salate, e pace.
11 'Since we have been rescued by God from great danger, we give him great thanks for championingour cause against the king,	11 Avendoci Dio liberati da gravi pericoli, ne rendiamo a lui solenni ringraziamenti, avendo noi avuto da combattere con tal re.
12 for he it was who carried off those who had taken up arms against the Holy City.	12 Perocché egli fece venir dalla Persia quel bulicame di gente, che fecero guerra a noi, e alla santa città.
13 For when their leader reached Persia with his seemingly irresistible army, he was cut to pieces in thetemple of Nanaea, as the result of a ruse employed by the priests who served that goddess.	13 Ma lo stesso condottiere trovandosi nella Persia con esercito innumerabile, perì nel tempio di Nanea, per tradimento de' sacerdoti di Nanea:
14 On the pretext of marrying Nanaea, Antiochus came to the place with his friends, intending to take itsmany treasures as a dowry.	14 Imperocché Antioco essendo andato co' suoi amici in quel luogo per isposarla, e ricevere gran somma di denaro a titolo di dote:
15 The priests of Nanaea had put these on display, and he for his part had entered the temple precinctswith only a small retinue. As soon as Antiochus had gone inside the temple, the priests shut him in,	15 E i sacerdoti avendo messo fuora il danaro, ed essendo egli entrato con pochi altri nella parte interiore del tempio, quelli, entrato che fu Antioco, chiusero il tempio.
16 opened a trap-door hidden in the ceiling and struck the leader down by hurling stones likethunderbolts. They then cut him into pieces and threw his head to those who were waiting outside.	16 E aperta una segreta entrata del tempio, a furia di sassate uccisero il condottiere, e i compagni, e li fecero in pezzi, e troncate le loro teste li gettarono fuora.
17 Blessed in al things be our God, who has delivered the sacrilegious over to death!	17 Benedetto in ogni cosa Iddio, il quale distrasse gli empj.
18 'As we shal be celebrating the purification of the Temple on the twenty-fifth of Chislev, we consider itproper to notify you, so that you too may celebrate it, as you do the feast of Shelters and the fire that appearedwhen Nehemiah, the builder of the Temple and the altar, offered sacrifice.	18 Noi adunque essendo per celebrare ai venticinque del mese di Casleu la purificazione del tempio, abbiam creduto necessario di darcene parte, affinchè voi pure celebriate il giorno de' tabernacoli, e la solennità del fuoco, il quale fu a noi conceduto allora quando Nehemia, ristorato il tempio, e l'altare, offerse i sagrifizj.
19 For when our ancestors were being deported to Persia, the devout priests of the time took some ofthe fire from the altar and hid it secretly in a hole like a dry well, where they concealed it in such a way that theplace was unknown to anyone.	19 Imperocché quando i padri nostri furon menati nella Persia, i sacerdoti d'allora timorati di Dio, preso il fuoco dell'altare, lo nascoser segretamente in una valle, dov'era un pozzo profondo, e asciutto, e ivi lo posero in sicuro, non essendovi nissuno, che sapesse nulla di quel luogo.
20 When some years had elapsed, in God's good time, Nehemiah, commissioned by the king of Persia,sent the descendants of the priests who had hidden the fire to look for it. When they reported that in fact theyhad found not fire but a thick liquid, Nehemiah ordered them to draw some out and bring it back.	20 Ma passati molti anni, essendo piaciuto a Dio, che Nehemia venisse spedito dal re di Persia (nella Giudea), i nipoti di que' sacerdoti, che lo avean nascosto furon mandati a cercar il fuoco, e com'essi ci raccontarono non trovarono fuoco, ma acqua densa.
21 When they had done this, Nehemiah ordered the priests to pour this liquid over the sacrificialmaterials, that is, the wood and what lay on it.	21 Ma il sacerdote Nehemia ordinò loro di attingerne, e portarne a lui, e che le vittime poste sull'altare, e le legna messevi sopra, con quell'acqua fossero asperse.
22 When this had been done, and when in due course the sun, which had previously been clouded over,shone out, a great fire flared up, to the astonishment of al .	22 E fatto questo, allorché il sole, che prima era tralle nuvole, cominciò a spargere la sua luce, si accese con ammirazione di tutti un gran fuoco.
23 While the sacrifice was being burned, the priests offered prayer, Jonathan intoning with al the priests,and the rest responding with Nehemiah.	23 Or tutti i sacerdoti oravano mentre si consumava il sagrifizio, intonando Gionata, e gli altri rispondendo.
24 The prayer took this form, "Lord, Lord God, Creator of all things, awesome, strong, just, merciful, theonly king and benefactor,	24 E l'orazione di Nehemia fu in questo modo: Signore Dio, Creator di tutte le cose, terribile, e forte, giusto, e misericordioso, che solo se' il buon re,
25 the only provider, who alone are just, almighty and everlasting, the deliverer of Israel from every evil,who made our fathers your chosen ones and sanctified them,	25 Il solo eccellente, il solo giusto e onnipotente, ed eterno, tu che liberi Israele da tutti i mali, tu che eleggesti i padri nostri, e li santificasti,
26 accept this sacrifice on behalf of all your people Israel, and protect your heritage and consecrate it.	26 Accetta questo sagrifizio per tutto il popol tuo d'Israele, e custodisci, e santifica la tua eredità.
27 Bring together those of us who are dispersed, set free those in slavery among the heathen, lookfavourably on those held in contempt or abhorrence, and let the heathen know that you are our God.	27 Riunisci i fratelli nostri dispenrsi, e libera quelli, che sono schiavi delle nazioni, e volgi lo sguardo a quelli, che vivono nel disprezzo, e nell'ignominia, affinchè conoscan le genti, che tu se' il Dio nostro.
28 Punish those who oppress us and affront us by their insolence,	28 Umilia quei, che ci opprimono, e ci insultano superbamente.
29 and plant your people firmly in your Holy Place, as Moses promised."	29 Ritorna il popol tuo al luogo tuo santo secondo la parola di Mosé.
30 'The priests then chanted hymns accompanied by the harp.	30 E i sacerdoti cantavano inni sino alla consumazione del sagrifizio.
31 When the sacrifice had been burnt, Nehemiah ordered the remaining liquid to be poured over largestones,	31 Finito il quale Nehemia ordinò, che l'acqua, che restava si spargesse sopra pietre grandi.
32 and when this was done a flame flared up, to be absorbed in a corresponding blaze of light from thealtar.	32 Lo che appena fu fatto, vi si accese gran fiamma, la quale però fu assorbita dalla luce, che sfavillò dall'altare.
33 When the matter became known and the king of the Persians heard that, in the place where the exiledpriests had hidden the fire, a liquid had appeared, with which Nehemiah and his people had purified thesacrificial offerings,	33 Ma divulgatasi tal cosa, fu riferito al re de' Persiani come nel luogo, dove i sacerdoti menati in ischiavitù avean nascosto il fuoco, si era veduta dell'acqua, colla quale Nehemia, e quelli, che erano con lui avean consumati i sagrifizj;
34 the king, after verifying the facts, had the place enclosed and pronounced sacred.	34 E il re, ponderata la cosa, e verificatala diligentemente, fece far ivi un tempio in prova del fatto:
35 To the people on whom the king bestowed it, he granted a part of the considerable revenue hederived from it.	35 E accertato che fu della cosa, donò molti beni ai sacerdoti, e di sua propria mano distribuì loro più, e più regali.
36 Nehemiah and his people termed this stuff "nephtar", which means "purification", but it is commonly cal ed "naphta".	36 E Nehemia diede a qnel luogo il nome di Nephtar, che vuoi dir purificazione: ma molti lo chiamano Nephi.
