1 Antiochus son of King Demetrius addressed a letter from the Mediterranean Isles to Simon, priest andethnarch of the Jews, and to the whole nation;	1 E lo re Antioco, figliuolo di Demetrio, mandò lettere dall' isole del mare a Simone, sacerdote e principe della gente de' Giudei, e di tutta l'altra loro gente.
2 this was how it read: 'King Antiochus to Simon, high priest and ethnarch, and to the Jewish nation,greetings.	2 Le quali contenevano in questo modo: lo re Antioco a Simone, grande sacerdote, e alla gente Giudea salute.
3 'Whereas certain scoundrels have seized control of the kingdom of our fathers, and I propose to claimback the kingdom so that I may re-establish it as it was before, and whereas I have accordingly recruited verylarge forces and fitted out warships,	3 Imperciò che uomini malvagi hanno occupato lo reame de' nostri padri, e io voglio vendicare lo reame e ritornare come era di prima, io hoe fatta una radunata di moltitudine d' oste, e ho fatte navi da combattere.
4 intending to make a landing in the country and to hunt down the men who have ruined it and laidwaste many towns in my kingdom;	4 E però voglio andare inanzi per la contrada, e vendicherommi di coloro che hanno corrotta la nostra regione, e che hanno guaste molte cittadi nel mio reame.
5 'I now, therefore, confirm in your favour al remissions of taxes granted to you by the kings mypredecessors, as wel as the waiving of whatever presents they may have conceded.	5 E però io ti concedo tutte l'offerte le quali ti rilasciarono li re dinanzi da me, e tutti gli altri doni i quali ti concedettono.
6 I hereby authorise you to mint your own coinage as legal tender for your own country.	6 E permetto che nella vostra regione si faccia moneta al proprio vostro sigillo.
7 I declare Jerusalem and the sanctuary to be free; all the arms you have manufactured and thefortresses you have built and now occupy may remain yours.	7 E voglio che Ierusalem sia santa e libera, e che tu abbi e tenghi tutte l'armi che qui sono fabbricate, e tutte le fortezze che t'hai fatte, e rimangati quelle cose che tu tieni.
8 Al debts to the royal treasury, present or future, are cancel ed henceforth in perpetuity.	8 E rilascio a te ogni regale debito, e che per inanzi si dee dare al re, e per ora e per lo tempo che deve venire.
9 Furthermore, when we have won back our kingdom, we shall bestow such great honour on yourself,your nation and the sanctuary as wil make your glory known throughout the world.'	9 E (però ti manifesto, che) quando riaveremo il nostro reame, noi faremo glorioso te e la tua gente, e il tuo tempio adorneremo di gloria, acciò che la vostra gloria sia manifesta per tutto il mondo.
10 Antiochus invaded the land of his ancestors in the year 174 and, since the troops all rallied to him,Trypho was left with few supporters.	10 Nel CLXXIIII anno (del regno de' Greci) Antioco venne nella terra de' suoi padri; e tutta l'oste del reame lo seguitava, sì che pochi ne rimasono con Trifone.
11 Antiochus pursued the usurper, who took refuge in Dora on the coast,	11 E lo re Antioco lui perseguitava; e Trifone se ne venne a Dora per la marina.
12 knowing that misfortunes were piling up on him and that his troops had deserted him.	12 Però ch' egli s' avvedea bene, che gli mali gli sopravenivano, e l'oste sua l' avea abbandonato.
13 Antiochus pitched camp outside Dora with a hundred and twenty thousand fighting men and eightthousand cavalry.	13 E Antioco s' accampò sopra Dora con CXX milia uomini da battaglia, e otto milia cavalieri.
14 He laid siege to the city while the ships closed in from the sea, so that he had the city under attackfrom land and sea, and al owed no one to go in or come out.	14 E attorniò la cittade, e le navi vennono per mare; sì che per mare e per terra tribolavano la cittade, e non ne lasciavano uscire persona nè entrare.
15 Numenius and his companions, meanwhile, arrived from Rome, bringing letters addressed to variouskings and states, in the fol owing terms:	15 In quel tempo venne da Roma Numenio, e quelli ch' erano andati con lui, i quali recarono lettere alli re e alle genti delle contrade, scritte in questa forma:
16 'Lucius, consul of the Romans, to King Ptolemy, greetings.	16 Lucio, console de' Romani, al re Tolomeo salute.
17 'The Jewish ambassadors have come to us as our friends and al ies to renew our original friendshipand alliance in the name of the high priest Simon and the Jewish people.	17 Gli ambasciatori de' Giudei vennono a noi, come nostri amici, rinnovellando la prima amistade e compagnia, mandati da Simone principe [de' sacerdoti, e] dal popolo de' Giudei.
18 They have brought a golden shield worth a thousand mina.	18 E recarono a noi uno scudo d' oro di libbre mille.
19 Accordingly, we have seen fit to write to various kings and states, warning them neither to molest theJewish people nor to attack either them or their towns or their country, nor to al y themselves with any suchaggressors.	19 Onde piacque a noi di scrivere alli re e alle regioni, che non facciano loro alcuno male, e non gl' ingiuriino e non gli offendano, nè loro, nè le loro cittadi, nè le loro regioni, e che non dieno aiuto a chi combattesse contro a loro.
20 We have seen fit to accept the shield from them.	20 E parve a noi di ricevere da loro il detto scudo.
21 If, therefore, any scoundrels have fled their country to take refuge with you, hand them over to Simonthe high priest, to be punished by him according to their law.'	21 E però se alcuni uomini rei fuggiti sono a voi del loro paese, (prendetegli e) dategli a Simone principe de' sacerdoti, che gli castighi secondo la sua legge.
22 The consul sent the same letter to King Demetrius, to Attalus, Ariarathes and Arsaces,	22 E queste medesime cose furono scritte allo re Demetrio, e ad Attalo e ad Ariatate e ad Arsace,
23 and to all states, including Sampsames, the Spartans, Delos, Myndos, Sicyon, Caria, Samos,Pamphylia, Lycia, Halicarnassus, Rhodes, Phaselis, Cos, Side, Arados, Gortyn, Cyprus and Cyrene.	23 e per tutte le regioni; e a Lampsaco, e agli Spartiati, a Delo e a Mindo e a Sicione e a Caria, e ad Alicarnasso e a Samo, e a Pamfilia e a Licia, e a Rodo e a Faselide, e a Coo e a Siden e ad Arado, e a Gortina e a Gnido e a Cipro e a Cirene.
24 They also drew up a copy for Simon the high priest.	24 E lo esemplo di queste lettere scrissono a Simone principe de' sacerdoti, e al popolo de' Giudei.
25 Antiochus, meanwhile, from his positions on the outskirts of Dora, was continual y throwingdetachments against the town. He constructed siege-engines, and blockaded Trypho, preventing movement inor out.	25 E (sì come avete inteso) lo re Antioco s' accampò a Dora la seconda volta (prosperevolmente), sempre andando contro a loro, e facendo ingegni; e (avvenne che) rinchiuse Trifone, e non lo lasciò andare più inanzi.
26 Simon sent him two thousand picked men to support him in the fight, with silver and gold and plentyof equipment.	26 E Simone gli mandò due milia uomini eletti in suo aiuto, e ariento e oro e vasi preziosi.
27 But Antiochus would not accept them; instead, he repudiated al his previous agreements with Simonand completely changed his attitude to him.	27 E lo re Antioco tutte queste cose non volse ricevere, ma ruppe tutti li patti che prima aveva fatti con lui, [e] straniossi da lui.
28 He sent him Athenobius, one of his Friends, to confer with him and say, 'You are now occupyingJoppa and Gezer and the Citadel in Jerusalem, which are towns in my kingdom.	28 E mandògli Atenobio, uno degli suoi amici, che trattasse con lui, dicendo: voi tenete Ioppen e Gazara e la ròcca ch' è in Ierusalem, le quali sono cittadi del mio reame.
29 You have laid waste their territory and done immense harm to the country; and you have seizedcontrol of many places properly in my kingdom.	29 E avete distrutto i loro confini, e avete fatto grande male sopra la terra, e avete signoreggiato per molti luoghi nel mio regno.
30 Either now surrender the towns you have taken and the taxes from the places you have seizedoutside the frontiers of Judaea,	30 Ora adunque rendetemi le cittadi le quali avete occupate, e rendetemi i tributi de' luoghi nei quali voi avete signoreggiato fuori de' confini dei Giudei.
31 or else pay me five hundred talents of silver in compensation for them and for the destruction youhave done, and another five hundred talents for the taxes from the towns; otherwise we shall come and makewar on you.'	31 E se ciò vi paresse grave, datemi in quello scambio cinquecento talenti di argento; per lo danno che avete fatto, e per lo tributo delle cittadi, altri cinquecento; e se questo non volete fare, sì vi verremo a combattere.
32 When the King's Friend, Athenobius, reached Jerusalem and saw Simon's magnificence, his cabinetof gold and silver plate and the state he kept, he was dumbfounded. He delivered the king's message,	32 Ora essendo venuto Atenobio, amico del re, (dispuose l'ambasciata, ed essendo) in Ierusalem, vidde la gloria di Simone, e la ricchezza dello ariento e dello oro che avea, e lo copioso fornimento (che avea); maravigliossi molto, e' dissegli le parole che gli avea imposto il re.
33 but Simon gave him this answer, 'We have not taken foreign territory or any alien property but haveoccupied our ancestral heritage, for some time unjustly wrested from us by our enemies;	33 E Simone rispuose: noi non abbiamo preso l'altrui terra, e non la tegniamo; ma possediamo la ereditade de' nostri padri, la quale è stata posseduta per alcuno tempo da' nostri nimici ingiustamente.
34 now that we have a favourable opportunity, we are merely recovering our ancestral heritage.	34 Ma noi, abbiendo tempo, ci racquistiamo la ereditade de' nostri padri.
35 As regards Joppa and Gezer, which you claim, these were towns that did great harm to our peopleand laid waste our country; we are prepared to give a hundred talents for them.' Without so much as a word inanswer,	35 Ma di Ioppen e di Gazara, le quali tu addimandi, loro facevano nel popolo nostro grande danno e nel nostro paese; e per (grazia e per amore di) queste terre ti daremo C talenti (d' oro). Ma lo ambasciadore non rispuose a lui parola.
36 the envoy went back to the king in a rage and reported on Simon's answer and his magnificence,and on everything he had seen, at which the king fel into a fury.	36 Ma con ira si ritornò al re, e ridissegli tutte queste parole, ridicendogli ancora della grande gloria di Simone, e tutto ciò che veduto avea; onde lo re di questo s' adirò molto forte.
37 Trypho now boarded a ship and escaped to Orthosia.	37 Ora avvenne che Trifone si fuggì in una nave in Ortosiada.
38 The king appointed Cendebaeus military governor of the coastal region and al otted him a force ofinfantry and cavalry.	38 Allora lo re ordinòe (uno che avea nome) Cendebeo duca della marina, e diedegli molta gente a piè e a cavallo.
39 He ordered him to deploy his men facing Judaea, and instructed him to rebuild Kedron and fortify itsgates, and to make war on our people, while the king himself went in pursuit of Trypho.	39 E comandògli che movesse il campo contro alla faccia di Giudea; e comandògli che rifacesse Gedore, e ch' edificasse le porte della città, e che consumasse il popolo (de' Giudei). E lo re perseguitava Trifone.
40 Cendebaeus arrived at Jamnia and began to provoke our people forthwith, invading Judaea, takingprisoners, and massacring.	40 Allora Cendebeo si venne (in Giudea) a Iamnia, e cominciò a commovere il popolo, e a guastare Giudea, e imprigionare il popolo e ucciderlo, ed edificare Gedore.
41 Having rebuilt Kedron, he stationed cavalry and troops there to make sorties and patrol the roads ofJudaea, as the king had ordered.	41 E puose quivi l'oste e i cavalieri, ????? ch' egli scorresse per la via di Giudea, sì come il re gli avea comandato.
