NEW AMERICAN BIBLEBIBLIA
Samuel died, and all Israel gathered to mourn him; they buried him at his home in Ramah. Then David went down to the desert of Maon.1 Samuel murió.
There was a man of Maon who had property in Carmel; he was very wealthy, owning three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. At this time he was present for the shearing of his flock in Carmel.2 Había un hombre en Maón que tenía su hacienda en Carmelo.
The man was named Nabal, his wife, Abigail. The woman was intelligent and attractive, but Nabal himself, a Calebite, was harsh and ungenerous in his behavior.3 El hombre se llamaba Nabal y su mujer se llamaba Abigaíl; ella era muy prudente y hermosa, pero el hombre era duro y de mala conducta. Era calebita.
When David heard in the desert that Nabal was shearing his flock,4 Supo David en el desierto que Nabal estaba esquilando su rebaño
he sent ten young men, instructing them: "Go up to Carmel. Pay Nabal a visit and greet him in my name.5 y mandó diez muchachos diciéndoles: «Subid a Carmelo y llegad donde Nabal y le saludáis en mi nombre,
Say to him, 'Peace be with you, my brother, and with your family, and with all who belong to you.6 y hablad así a mi hermano; Salud para tí, salud para tu casa y salud para todo lo tuyo.
I have just heard that shearers are with you. Now, when your shepherds were with us, we did them no injury, neither did they miss anything all the while they were in Carmel.7 He sabido que estás de esquileo; pues bien, tus pastores han estado con nosotros y nunca les hemos molestado ni han echado en falta nada de lo suyo mientras estuvieron en Carmelo.
Ask your servants and they will tell you so. Look kindly on these young men, since we come at a festival time. Please give your servants and your son David whatever you can manage.'"8 Pregunta a tus criados y ellos te lo dirán. Que estos muchachos encuentren, pues gracia a tus ojos, ya que hemos venido en un día de fiesta, y dales lo que tengas a mano para tus siervos y tu hijo David.”»
When David's young men arrived, they delivered this message fully to Nabal in David's name, and then waited.9 Llegaron los muchachos de David, dijeron a Nabal todas estas palabras en nombre de David y se quedaron esperando.
But Nabal answered the servants of David: "Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? Nowadays there are many servants who run away from their masters.10 Pero Nabal respondió a los servidores de David: «¿Quién es David y quién es el hijo de Jesé? Abundan hoy en día los siervos que andan huídos de sus señores.
Must I take my bread, my wine, my meat that I have slaughtered for my own shearers, and give them to men who come from I know not where?"11 ¿Voy a tomar acaso mi pan y mi vino y las reses que he sacrificado para los esquiladores y se las voy a dar a unos hombres que no sé de dónde son?»
So David's young men retraced their steps and on their return reported to him all that had been said.12 Los muchachos de David dieron la vuelta y se volvieron por su camino, y en llegando le conmunicaron todas estas palabras.
Thereupon David said to his men, "Let everyone gird on his sword." And so everyone, David included, girded on his sword. About four hundred men went up after David, while two hundred remained with the baggage.13 David dijo a sus hombres: «Que cada uno ciña su espada».
But Nabal's wife Abigail was informed of this by one of the servants, who said: "David sent messengers from the desert to greet our master, but he flew at them screaming.14 Uno de los servidores avisó a Abigaíl, mujer de Nabal, diciendo: «Mira que David ha enviado mensajeros desde el desierto para saludar a nuestro amo, y se ha lanzado contra ellos.
Yet these men were very good to us. We were done no injury, neither did we miss anything all the while we were living among them during our stay in the open country.15 Sin embargo, esos hombres han sido muy buenos con nosotros, y nada echamos en falta mientras anduvimos con ellos, cuando estábamos en el campo.
For us they were like a rampart night and day the whole time we were pasturing the sheep near them.16 Fueron nuestra defensa noche y día todo el tiempo que estuvimos con ellos guardando el ganado.
Now, see what you can do, for you must realize that otherwise evil is in store for our master and for his whole family. He is so mean that no one can talk to him."17 Date cuenta y mira lo que debes hacer, porque ya está decretada la ruina de nuestro amo y de toda la casa, y es un necio al que nada se puede decir.
Abigail quickly got together two hundred loaves, two skins of wine, five dressed sheep, five seahs of roasted grain, a hundred cakes of pressed raisins, and two hundred cakes of pressed figs, and loaded them on asses.18 Tomó Abigaíl a toda prisa doscientos panes y dos ordres de vino, cinco carneros ya preparados, cinco arrobas de trigo tostado, cien racimos de uvas pasas y doscientos panes de higos secos, y lo cargó sobre unos asnos,
She then said to her servants, "Go on ahead; I will follow you." But she did not tell her husband Nabal.19 diciendo a sus servidores: «Pasad delante de mí, que yo os sigo». Pero nada dijo a su marido Nabal.
As she came down through a mountain defile riding on an ass, David and his men were also coming down from the opposite direction.
David had just been saying: "Indeed, it was in vain that I guarded all this man's possessions in the desert, so that he missed nothing. He has repaid good with evil.21 David se decía: «Muy en vano he guardado en el desierto todo lo de este hombre para que nada de lo suyo le faltase, pues me devuelve mal por bien.
May God do thus and so to David, if by morning I leave a single male alive among all those who belong to him."22 Esto haga Dios a David y esto otro añada si para el alba dejo con vida ni un solo varón de los de Nabal».
As soon as Abigail saw David, she dismounted quickly from the ass and, falling prostrate on the ground before David, did him homage.23 Apenas vio a David, se apresuró Abigaíl a bajar del asno y cayendo ante David se postró en tierra, y
As she fell at his feet she said: "My lord, let the blame be mine. Please let your handmaid speak to you, and listen to the words of your handmaid.24 arrojándose a sus pies le dijo: «Caiga sobre mí la falta, señor. Deja que tu sierva hable a tus oídos y eschucha las palabras de tu sierva.
Let not my lord pay attention to that worthless man Nabal, for he is just like his name. Fool is his name, and he acts the fool. I, your handmaid, did not see the young men whom my lord sent.25 No haga caso mi señor de este necio de Nabal; porque le va bien el nombre: necio se llama y la necedad está con él; yo, tu sierva, no vi a los siervos que mi señor había enviado.
Now, therefore, my lord, as the LORD lives, and as you live, it is the LORD who has kept you from shedding blood and from avenging yourself personally. May your enemies and those who seek to harm my lord become as Nabal!26 Ahora, mi señor, por Yahveh y por tu vida, por Yahveh que te ha impedido derramar sangre y tomarte la justicia por tu propia mano, que sean como Nabal tus enemigos y los que buscan la ruina de mi señor.
Accept this present, then, which your maidservant has brought for my lord, and let it be given to the young men who follow my lord.27 Cuanto a este presente que tu sierva ha hecho traer para mi señor, que sea entregado a los muchachos que marchan en pos de mi señor.
Please forgive the transgression of your handmaid, for the LORD shall certainly establish a lasting dynasty for my lord, because your lordship is fighting the battles of the LORD, and there is no evil to be found in you your whole life long.28 Perdona, por favor, la falta de tu sierva, ya que ciertamente hará Yahveh una casa permanente a mi señor, pues mi señor combate las batallas de Yahveh y no vendrá mal sobre ti en toda tu vida.
If anyone rises to pursue you and to seek your life, may the life of my lord be bound in the bundle of the living in the care of the LORD your God; but may he hurl out the lives of your enemies as from the hollow of a sling.29 Y aunque se alza un hombre para perseguirte y buscar tu vida, la vida de mi señor está encerrada en la bolsa de la vida, al lado de Yahveh tu Dios, mientras que la vida de los enemigos de mi señor la volteará en el hueco de la honda.
And when the LORD carries out for my lord the promise of success he has made concerning you, and appoints you as commander over Israel,30 Cuando haga Yahveh a mi señor todo el bien que te ha prometido y te haya establecido como caudillo de Israel,
you shall not have this as a qualm or burden on your conscience, my lord, for having shed innocent blood or for having avenged yourself personally. When the LORD confers this benefit on your lordship, remember your handmaid."31 que no haya turbación ni remordimiento en el corazón de mi señor por haber derramado sangre inocente y haberse tomado mi señor la justicia por su mano; y cuando Yahveh haya favorecido a mi señor. acuérdase de tu sierva».
David said to Abigail: "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who sent you to meet me today.32 David dijo a Abigaíl: «Bendito sea Yahveh, Dios de Israel, que te ha enviado hoy a mi encuentro.
Blessed be your good judgment and blessed be you yourself, who this day have prevented me from shedding blood and from avenging myself personally.33 Bendita sea tu prudencia y bendita tú misma que me has impedido derramar sangre y tomarme la justicia por mi mano.
Otherwise, as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, who has restrained me from harming you, if you had not come so promptly to meet me, by dawn Nabal would not have had a single man or boy left alive."34 Pero con todo, vive Yahveh, Dios de Israel, que me ha impedido hacerte mal, que de no haberte apresurado a venir a mi encuentro, no le hubiera quedado a Nabal, al romper el alba, ni un solo varón».
David then took from her what she had brought him and said to her: "Go up to your home in peace! See, I have granted your request as a personal favor."35 Tomó David de mano de ella lo que le traía y le dijo: «Sube en paz a tu casa; mira, he escuchado tu voz y he accedido a tu petición».
When Abigail came to Nabal, there was a drinking party in his house like that of a king, and Nabal was merry because he was very drunk. So she told him nothing at all before daybreak the next morning.36 Cuando Abigaíl llegó donde Nabal, estaba celebrando en su casa un banquete regio; estaba alegre su corazón y completamente borracho.
But then, when Nabal had become sober, his wife told him what had happened. At this his courage died within him, and he became like a stone.37 Pero a la mañana, cuando se le pasó el vino a Nabal, le contó su mujer lo sucedido; el corazón se le murió en el pecho y se le quedó como una piedra.
About ten days later the LORD struck him and he died.38 Al cabo de unos diez días hirió Yahveh a Nabal y murió.
On hearing that Nabal was dead, David said: "Blessed be the LORD, who has requited the insult I received at the hand of Nabal, and who restrained his servant from doing evil, but has punished Nabal for his own evil deeds."
When David's servants came to Abigail in Carmel, they said to her, "David has sent us to you that he may take you as his wife."40 Llegaron los mensajeros de David a casa de Abigaíl en Carmelo y le hablaron diciendo: «David nos envía a ti para tomarte por mujer».
Rising and bowing to the ground, she answered, "Your handmaid would become a slave to wash the feet of my lord's servants."41 Se levantó ella y se postró rostro en tierra diciendo: «Tu sierva es una esclava para lavar los pies de los siervos de mi señor».
She got up immediately, mounted an ass, and followed David's messengers, with her five maids following in attendance upon her. She became his wife,42 Se levantó Abigaíl apresuradamente, montó en su asno y, seguida de cinco de sus siervas, se fue tras los enviados de David y fue su mujer.
and David also married Ahinoam of Jezreel. Thus both of them were his wives; but Saul gave David's wife Michal, Saul's own daughter, to Palti, son of Laish, who was from Gallim.43 David había tomado también por mujer a Ajinoam de Yizreel y las dos fueron mujeres suyas.
