1 There was a certain man from Rama-thaim, Elkanah by name, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim. He was the son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.	1 Il y avait un homme de Ramataïm, un Soufite de la montagne d’Éphraïm, qui s’appelait Elkana. Il était fils de Yéroham, fils d’Élihou, fils de Tohou, fils de Souf, de la tribu d’Éphraïm.
2 He had two wives, one named Hannah, the other Peninnah; Peninnah had children, but Hannah was childless.	2 Il avait deux femmes, l’une s’appelait Anne, l’autre Pénina. Pénina avait des enfants mais Anne n’en avait pas.
3 This man regularly went on pilgrimage from his city to worship the LORD of hosts and to sacrifice to him at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were ministering as priests of the LORD.	3 Cet homme montait chaque année de sa ville pour adorer et pour offrir des sacrifices à Yahvé Sabaot, au sanctuaire de Silo; les deux fils d’Héli, Hofni et Pinhas, servaient comme prêtres de Yahvé en cet endroit.
4 When the day came for Elkanah to offer sacrifice, he used to give a portion each to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters,	4 Un jour Elkana offrait un sacrifice; il donna des portions à sa femme Pénina ainsi qu’à ses fils et à ses filles;
5 but a double portion to Hannah because he loved her, though the LORD had made her barren.	5 il servit une double portion à Anne car il aimait Anne, mais Yahvé l’avait rendue stérile.
6 Her rival, to upset her, turned it into a constant reproach to her that the LORD had left her barren.	6 Sa rivale ne faisait qu’augmenter sa peine: elle l’humiliait parce que Yahvé l’avait rendue stérile.
7 This went on year after year; each time they made their pilgrimage to the sanctuary of the LORD, Peninnah would approach her, and Hannah would weep and refuse to eat.	7 Chaque année c’était pareil quand elle montait à la maison de Yahvé: l’autre ravivait sa peine, Anne pleurait et ne mangeait plus.
8 Her husband Elkanah used to ask her: "Hannah, why do you weep, and why do you refuse to eat? Why do you grieve? Am I not more to you than ten sons?"	8 Elkana, son mari, lui dit: “Anne, pourquoi pleures-tu, pourquoi ne manges-tu pas, pourquoi es-tu si triste, est-ce que je ne vaux pas mieux pour toi que dix fils?”
9 Hannah rose after one such meal at Shiloh, and presented herself before the LORD; at the time, Eli the priest was sitting on a chair near the doorpost of the LORD'S temple.	9 Ce jour-là, après qu’on eut mangé et bu à Silo, Anne se leva alors que le prêtre Héli était assis sur son siège contre un des montants de la porte du sanctuaire de Yahvé.
10 In her bitterness she prayed to the LORD, weeping copiously,	10 Dans sa peine elle se tourna vers Yahvé et le pria sans cesser de pleurer;
11 and she made a vow, promising: "O LORD of hosts, if you look with pity on the misery of your handmaid, if you remember me and do not forget me, if you give your handmaid a male child, I will give him to the LORD for as long as he lives; neither wine nor liquor shall he drink, and no razor shall ever touch his head."	11 elle fit ce vœu: “Yahvé des armées, regarde avec bonté la peine de ta servante, souviens-toi de moi, n’oublie pas ta servante. Si tu donnes à ta servante un petit garçon, je le consacrerai à Yahvé pour le restant de ses jours et le rasoir ne passera pas sur sa tête.”
12 As she remained long at prayer before the LORD, Eli watched her mouth,	12 Elle priait là longuement devant Yahvé et Héli la regardait.
13 for Hannah was praying silently; though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard. Eli, thinking her drunk,	13 Anne priait dans le fond de son cœur, elle remuait à peine les lèvres et l’on n’entendait pas sa voix.
14 said to her, "How long will you make a drunken show of yourself? Sober up from your wine!"	14 Héli pensa donc qu’elle était ivre, il lui dit: “Combien de temps vas-tu rester dans cet état? Va cuver ton vin.”
15 "It isn't that, my lord," Hannah answered. "I am an unhappy woman. I have had neither wine nor liquor; I was only pouring out my troubles to the LORD.	15 Anne répondit: “Non, mon seigneur, je ne suis qu’une femme en peine; je n’ai bu ni vin, ni boisson alcoolisée, mais j’épanche mon cœur devant Yahvé.
16 Do not think your handmaid a ne'er-do-well; my prayer has been prompted by my deep sorrow and misery."	16 Ne prends pas ta servante pour une femme de rien: si je me suis tellement attardée à prier, c’est parce que ma souffrance et mon chagrin sont grands.”
17 Eli said, "Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him."	17 Héli reprit la parole et lui dit: “Va en paix, et que le Dieu d’Israël exauce la prière que tu lui as faite.”
18 She replied, "Think kindly of your maidservant," and left. She went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and no longer appeared downcast.	18 Elle lui dit à son tour: “Que ta servante trouve grâce à tes yeux!” Elle se leva, mangea, mais son visage n’était plus le même.
19 Early the next morning they worshiped before the LORD, and then returned to their home in Ramah. When Elkanah had relations with his wife Hannah, the LORD remembered her.	19 De bon matin on se leva et, après s’être prosternés devant Yahvé, ils s’en retournèrent pour regagner leur maison à Rama.
20 She conceived, and at the end of her term bore a son whom she called Samuel, since she had asked the LORD for him.	20 Elkana eut des relations avec sa femme Anne et Yahvé se souvint d’elle. Lorsque le temps fut accompli, Anne enfanta un fils et lui donna le nom de Samuel, car, dit-elle: “Je l’ai demandé à Yahvé.”
21 The next time her husband Elkanah was going up with the rest of his household to offer the customary sacrifice to the LORD and to fulfill his vows,	21 Elkana, son mari, monta avec toute sa maison pour offrir à Yahvé le sacrifice comme chaque année et s’acquitter de son vœu.
22 Hannah did not go, explaining to her husband, "Once the child is weaned, I will take him to appear before the LORD and to remain there forever; I will offer him as a perpetual nazirite."	22 Anne ne monta pas, mais elle dit à son mari: “Lorsque l’enfant sera sevré, je le conduirai devant Yahvé et il y restera pour toujours.”
23 Her husband Elkanah answered her: "Do what you think best; wait until you have weaned him. Only, may the LORD bring your resolve to fulfillment!" And so she remained at home and nursed her son until she had weaned him.	23 Elkana lui répondit: “Fais comme il te semble bon. Reste ici jusqu’à ce que tu l’aies sevré, et que Yahvé fasse comme tu viens de dire.” La femme resta donc, elle allaita son fils jusqu’au jour où il fut sevré.
24 Once he was weaned, she brought him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and presented him at the temple of the LORD in Shiloh.	24 Après qu’elle l’eut sevré, elle le fit monter avec elle à la maison de Yahvé à Silo; elle menait un taureau de trois ans avec une mesure de farine et une outre de vin. L’enfant était encore tout jeune.
25 After the boy's father had sacrificed the young bull, Hannah, his mother, approached Eli	25 Ils sacrifièrent le taureau et ils amenèrent l’enfant à Héli.
26 and said: "Pardon, my lord! As you live my lord, I am the woman who stood near you here, praying to the LORD.	26 Anne lui dit: “Pardon, mon seigneur! Aussi vrai que tu vis, mon seigneur, c’est moi la femme qui se tenait ici près de toi pour prier Yahvé.
27 I prayed for this child, and the LORD granted my request.	27 C’est pour cet enfant que j’ai prié et Yahvé m’a donné ce que je lui demandais.
28 Now I, in turn, give him to the LORD; as long as he lives, he shall be dedicated to the LORD." She left him there;	28 À mon tour je le cède à Yahvé pour le restant de ses jours: il sera donné à Yahvé.” C’est ainsi qu’il resta là au service de Yahvé.
