NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Early the next morning Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) encamped by Enharod with all his soldiers. The camp of Midian was in the valley north of Gibeath-hammoreh.	1 Yerubbaal (c'est-à-dire Gédéon) se leva de grand matin ainsi que tout le peuple qui était avec lui, et ilvint camper à En-Harod; le camp de Madiân se trouvait au nord du sien, au pied de la colline du Moré dans lavallée.
2 The LORD said to Gideon, "You have too many soldiers with you for me to deliver Midian into their power, lest Israel vaunt itself against me and say, 'My own power brought me the victory.'	2 Alors Yahvé dit à Gédéon: "Le peuple qui est avec toi est trop nombreux pour que je livre Madiânentre ses mains; Israël pourrait en tirer gloire à mes dépens, et dire: C'est ma propre main qui m'a délivré!
3 Now proclaim to all the soldiers, 'If anyone is afraid or fearful, let him leave.'" When Gideon put them to this test on the mountain, twenty-two thousand of the soldiers left, but ten thousand remained.	3 Et maintenant, proclame donc ceci aux oreilles du peuple: Que celui qui a peur et qui tremble, s'enretourne et qu'il observe du mont Gelboé." 22.000 hommes parmi le peuple s'en retournèrent et il en resta10.000.
4 The LORD said to Gideon, "There are still too many soldiers. Lead them down to the water and I will test them for you there. If I tell you that a certain man is to go with you, he must go with you. But no one is to go if I tell you he must not."	4 Yahvé dit à Gédéon: "Ce peuple est encore trop nombreux. Fais-les descendre au bord de l'eau et là,pour toi, je les éprouverai. Celui dont je te dirai: Qu'il aille avec toi, celui-là ira avec toi. Et tout homme dont jete dirai: Qu'il n'aille pas avec toi, celui-là n'ira pas."
5 When Gideon led the soldiers down to the water, the LORD said to him, "You shall set to one side everyone who laps up the water as a dog does with its tongue; to the other, everyone who kneels down to drink."	5 Gédéon fit alors descendre le peuple au bord de l'eau et Yahvé lui dit: "Tous ceux qui laperont l'eauavec la langue comme lape le chien, tu les mettras d'un côté. Et tous ceux qui s'agenouilleront pour boire, tu lesmettras de l'autre."
6 Those who lapped up the water raised to their mouths by hand numbered three hundred, but all the rest of the soldiers knelt down to drink the water.	6 Le nombre de ceux qui lapèrent l'eau avec leurs mains à leur bouche fut de 300. Tout le reste dupeuple s'était agenouillé pour boire.
7 The LORD said to Gideon, "By means of the three hundred who lapped up the water I will save you and will deliver Midian into your power. So let all the other soldiers go home."	7 Alors Yahvé dit à Gédéon: "C'est avec les 300 hommes qui ont lapé l'eau que je vous sauverai et queje livrerai Madiân entre tes mains. Que tout le peuple s'en retourne chacun chez soi."
8 Their horns, and such supplies as the soldiers had with them, were taken up, and Gideon ordered the rest of the Israelites to their tents, but kept the three hundred men. Now the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.	8 Ils prirent les provisions du peuple et leurs cors, puis Gédéon renvoya tous les Israélites chacun soussa tente, ne gardant que les 300. Le camp de Madiân se trouvait au-dessous du sien dans la vallée.
9 That night the LORD said to Gideon, "Go, descend on the camp, for I have delivered it up to you.	9 Or il arriva que pendant cette nuit-là Yahvé lui dit: "Lève-toi, descends au camp, car je le livre entretes mains.
10 If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your aide Purah.	10 Cependant, si tu as peur de descendre, descends au camp avec Pura ton serviteur;
11 When you hear what they are saying, you will have the courage to descend on the camp." So he went down with his aide Purah to the outposts of the camp.	11 écoute ce qu'ils disent; tu en seras réconforté, et tu descendras contre le camp." Il descendit doncavec son serviteur Pura jusqu'à l'extrémité des avant-postes du camp.
12 The Midianites, Amalekites, and all the Kedemites lay in the valley, as numerous as locusts. Nor could their camels be counted, for these were as many as the sands on the seashore.	12 Madiân, Amaleq et tous les fils de l'Orient étaient déployés dans la vallée, aussi nombreux que dessauterelles; leurs chameaux étaient sans nombre, comme le sable sur le bord de la mer.
13 When Gideon arrived, one man was telling another about a dream. "I had a dream," he said, "that a round loaf of barley bread was rolling into the camp of Midian. It came to our tent and struck it, and as it fell it turned the tent upside down."	13 Gédéon vint donc et voici qu'un homme racontait un rêve à son camarade; il disait: "Voici le rêveque j'ai fait: une galette de pain d'orge roulait dans le camp de Madiân, elle atteignit la tente, elle la heurta et larenversa sens dessus dessous."
14 "This can only be the sword of the Israelite Gideon, son of Joash," the other replied. "God has delivered Midian and all the camp into his power."	14 Son camarade lui répondit: "Ce ne peut être que l'épée de Gédéon, fils de Yoash, l'Israélite. Dieu alivré entre ses mains Madiân et tout le camp."
15 When Gideon heard the description and explanation of the dream, he prostrated himself. Then returning to the camp of Israel, he said, "Arise, for the LORD has delivered the camp of Midian into your power."	15 Quand il eut entendu le récit du songe et son explication, Gédéon se prosterna, puis il revint au campd'Israël et dit: "Debout! car Yahvé a livré entre vos mains le camp de Madiân!"
16 He divided the three hundred men into three companies, and provided them all with horns and with empty jars and torches inside the jars.	16 Gédéon divisa alors ses 300 hommes en trois groupes. A tous il remit des cors et des cruches vides,avec des torches dans les cruches:
17 "Watch me and follow my lead," he told them. "I shall go to the edge of the camp, and as I do, you must do also.	17 "Regardez-moi, leur dit-il, et faites comme moi! Quand je serai arrivé à l'extrémité du camp, ce queje ferai, vous le ferez aussi!
18 When I and those with me blow horns, you too must blow horns all around the camp and cry out, 'For the LORD and for Gideon!'"	18 Je sonnerai du cor, moi et tous ceux qui sont avec moi; alors, vous aussi, vous sonnerez du cor toutautour du camp et vous crierez: Pour Yahvé et pour Gédéon!"
19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after the posting of the guards. They blew the horns and broke the jars they were holding.	19 Gédéon et les cent hommes qui l'accompagnaient arrivèrent à l'extrémité du camp au début de laveille de la mi-nuit, comme on venait de placer les sentinelles; ils sonnèrent du cor et brisèrent les cruches qu'ilsavaient à la main.
20 All three companies blew horns and broke their jars. They held the torches in their left hands, and in their right the horns they were blowing, and cried out, "A sword for the LORD and Gideon!"	20 Alors les trois groupes sonnèrent du cor et brisèrent leurs cruches; de la main gauche ils saisirent lestorches, de la droite les cors pour en sonner, et ils crièrent: "Epée pour Yahvé et pour Gédéon!"
21 They all remained standing in place around the camp, while the whole camp fell to running and shouting and fleeing.	21 Et ils se tinrent immobiles chacun à sa place autour du camp. Tout le camp alors s'agita et, poussantdes cris, les Madianites prirent la fuite.
22 But the three hundred men kept blowing the horns, and throughout the camp the LORD set the sword of one against another. The army fled as far as Beth-shittah in the direction of Zarethan, near the border of Abel-meholah at Tabbath.	22 Pendant que les 300 sonnaient du cor, Yahvé fit que dans tout le camp chacun tournait l'épée contreson camarade. Tous s'enfuirent jusqu'à Bet-ha-Shitta, vers Cartân, jusqu'à la rive d'Abel-Mehola vis-à-vis deTabbat.
23 The Israelites were called to arms from Naphtali, from Asher, and from all Manasseh, and they pursued Midian.	23 Les gens d'Israël se rassemblèrent, de Nephtali, d'Asher et de tout Manassé, et ils poursuivirentMadiân.
24 Gideon also sent messengers throughout the mountain region of Ephraim to say, "Go down to confront Midian, and seize the water courses against them as far as Beth-barah, as well as the Jordan." So all the Ephraimites were called to arms, and they seized the water courses as far as Beth-barah, and the Jordan as well.	24 Gédéon envoya dans toute la montagne d'Ephraïm des messagers dire: "Descendez à la rencontre deMadiân et occupez avant eux les points d'eau jusqu'à Bet-Bara et le Jourdain." Tous les gens d'Ephraïm serassemblèrent et ils occupèrent les points d'eau jusqu'à Bet-Bara et le Jourdain.
25 They captured the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, killing Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeeb at the wine press of Zeeb. Then they pursued Midian and carried the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.	25 Ils firent prisonniers les deux chefs de Madiân, Oreb et Zéeb, ils tuèrent Oreb au Rocher d'Oreb etZéeb au Pressoir de Zéeb. Ils poursuivirent Madiân et ils apportèrent à Gédéon au-delà du Jourdain les têtesd'Oreb et de Zéeb.
