1 Early the next morning Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) encamped by Enharod with all his soldiers. The camp of Midian was in the valley north of Gibeath-hammoreh.	1 Yéroubbaal (c’est Gédéon) se leva de bon matin et s’en vint camper avec tout le peuple qui l’accompagnait, au-dessus d’En-Harod. Le camp de Madian était au nord de celui de Gédéon, dans la plaine, au pied du mont Moré.
2 The LORD said to Gideon, "You have too many soldiers with you for me to deliver Midian into their power, lest Israel vaunt itself against me and say, 'My own power brought me the victory.'	2 Yahvé dit à Gédéon: “Le peuple qui t’accompagne est trop nombreux. Si je livrais Madian entre tes mains, Israël pourrait en tirer gloire à mes dépens. Il dirait: Je me suis délivré moi-même.
3 Now proclaim to all the soldiers, 'If anyone is afraid or fearful, let him leave.'" When Gideon put them to this test on the mountain, twenty-two thousand of the soldiers left, but ten thousand remained.	3 Tu vas donc proclamer ceci devant tout le peuple: Que celui qui a peur et qui tremble, s’en retourne.” Et Gédéon les mit à l’épreuve. 22 000 hommes du peuple s’en retournèrent et il en resta 10 000.
4 The LORD said to Gideon, "There are still too many soldiers. Lead them down to the water and I will test them for you there. If I tell you that a certain man is to go with you, he must go with you. But no one is to go if I tell you he must not."	4 Yahvé dit à Gédéon: “Le peuple est encore trop nombreux. Fais-les descendre au bord de l’eau, et là je ferai le tri. Celui pour lequel je te dirai: Qu’il aille avec toi! ira avec toi. Et celui pour lequel je te dirai: Qu’il n’aille pas avec toi! n’ira pas avec toi.”
5 When Gideon led the soldiers down to the water, the LORD said to him, "You shall set to one side everyone who laps up the water as a dog does with its tongue; to the other, everyone who kneels down to drink."	5 On fit donc descendre le peuple au bord de l’eau, et Yahvé dit à Gédéon: “Tu sépareras ceux qui laperont l’eau avec la langue, comme lape le chien, de ceux qui se mettront à genoux pour boire.”
6 Those who lapped up the water raised to their mouths by hand numbered three hundred, but all the rest of the soldiers knelt down to drink the water.	6 Ceux qui lapèrent dans leur main en la portant à leur bouche, furent au nombre de 300, car tout le reste du peuple s’était mis à genoux pour boire.
7 The LORD said to Gideon, "By means of the three hundred who lapped up the water I will save you and will deliver Midian into your power. So let all the other soldiers go home."	7 Yahvé dit alors à Gédéon: “Je vous sauverai et je livrerai Madian entre vos mains avec ces 300 hommes qui ont lapé l’eau. Que tout le reste du peuple s’en retourne chacun chez soi.”
8 Their horns, and such supplies as the soldiers had with them, were taken up, and Gideon ordered the rest of the Israelites to their tents, but kept the three hundred men. Now the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.	8 On ramassa les vivres du peuple et leurs trompettes, puis Gédéon les renvoya chacun chez soi et ne garda que les 300 hommes. Le camp des Madianites était au-dessous de lui, dans la plaine.
9 That night the LORD said to Gideon, "Go, descend on the camp, for I have delivered it up to you.	9 Durant cette nuit, Yahvé dit à Gédéon: “Descends donc vers le camp des Madianites, tu n’as rien à craindre d’eux.
10 If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your aide Purah.	10 Si cela te fait peur d’y descendre, descends avec ton serviteur Poura.
11 When you hear what they are saying, you will have the courage to descend on the camp." So he went down with his aide Purah to the outposts of the camp.	11 Tu écouteras ce qu’ils disent et cela te donnera du courage pour aller attaquer leur camp.” Il descendit donc avec son serviteur Poura jusqu’aux avant-postes des Madianites.
12 The Midianites, Amalekites, and all the Kedemites lay in the valley, as numerous as locusts. Nor could their camels be counted, for these were as many as the sands on the seashore.	12 Ceux-ci s’étaient installés sur toute la plaine avec Amalec et tous les fils de l’Orient. Ils fourmillaient comme les sauterelles et leurs chameaux étaient aussi nombreux que le sable du bord de la mer.
13 When Gideon arrived, one man was telling another about a dream. "I had a dream," he said, "that a round loaf of barley bread was rolling into the camp of Midian. It came to our tent and struck it, and as it fell it turned the tent upside down."	13 Quand Gédéon arriva, un homme était en train de raconter un songe à son camarade: “J’ai eu un songe. C’était un pain d’orge qui déboulait dans le camp de Madian; il arriva jusqu’à la Tente, la heurta, et elle s’écroula.”
14 "This can only be the sword of the Israelite Gideon, son of Joash," the other replied. "God has delivered Midian and all the camp into his power."	14 Son camarade lui répondit: “Ce ne peut pas être autre chose que l’épée de Gédéon, fils de Yoach, l’Israélite. Dieu a sûrement livré tout le camp de Madian entre ses mains.”
15 When Gideon heard the description and explanation of the dream, he prostrated himself. Then returning to the camp of Israel, he said, "Arise, for the LORD has delivered the camp of Midian into your power."	15 Lorsque Gédéon entendit le récit du songe et son interprétation, il se prosterna. Il rentra au camp d’Israël et dit: “Levez-vous! Yahvé a livré le camp de Madian entre nos mains.”
16 He divided the three hundred men into three companies, and provided them all with horns and with empty jars and torches inside the jars.	16 Il divisa les 300 hommes en trois groupes. À tous il leur remit des trompettes et des cruches vides avec des torches dans les cruches.
17 "Watch me and follow my lead," he told them. "I shall go to the edge of the camp, and as I do, you must do also.	17 Puis il leur dit: “Regardez-moi bien et faites comme je ferai. Dès que j’arriverai aux abords du camp des Madianites, vous ferez comme moi.
18 When I and those with me blow horns, you too must blow horns all around the camp and cry out, 'For the LORD and for Gideon!'"	18 Lorsque je sonnerai de la trompette, moi et tous ceux qui sont avec moi, vous aussi vous sonnerez de la trompette tout autour du camp et vous crierez: Pour Yahvé et pour Gédéon!”
19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after the posting of the guards. They blew the horns and broke the jars they were holding.	19 Gédéon et les cent hommes qui l’accompagnaient arrivèrent aux abords du camp de Madian vers le milieu de la nuit, alors qu’on venait de relever les sentinelles. Ils sonnèrent de la trompette et brisèrent les cruches qu’ils portaient à la main.
20 All three companies blew horns and broke their jars. They held the torches in their left hands, and in their right the horns they were blowing, and cried out, "A sword for the LORD and Gideon!"	20 Aussitôt les trois groupes sonnèrent de la trompette, brisèrent les cruches. Ils saisirent les torches de la main gauche tout en sonnant de la trompette qu’ils tenaient de la main droite, et ils s’écrièrent: “Épée pour Yahvé et pour Gédéon!”
21 They all remained standing in place around the camp, while the whole camp fell to running and shouting and fleeing.	21 Mais ils restèrent chacun à sa place tout autour du camp. Tout le monde dans le camp se mit à courir, à crier et à fuir.
22 But the three hundred men kept blowing the horns, and throughout the camp the LORD set the sword of one against another. The army fled as far as Beth-shittah in the direction of Zarethan, near the border of Abel-meholah at Tabbath.	22 Comme ils n’arrêtaient pas de sonner de la trompette, Yahvé fit que dans tout le camp chacun tourna son épée contre son frère. Ils s’enfuirent tous jusqu’à Beth-Ha-Chitta, du côté de Sartan, et jusqu’à la rive d’Abel-Méhola en face de Tabbat.
23 The Israelites were called to arms from Naphtali, from Asher, and from all Manasseh, and they pursued Midian.	23 Les hommes d’Israël venus de Nephtali, d’Asher et de tout Manassé, se regroupèrent et poursuivirent les Madianites.
24 Gideon also sent messengers throughout the mountain region of Ephraim to say, "Go down to confront Midian, and seize the water courses against them as far as Beth-barah, as well as the Jordan." So all the Ephraimites were called to arms, and they seized the water courses as far as Beth-barah, and the Jordan as well.	24 Gédéon envoya alors des messagers dans toute la montagne d’Éphraïm: “Descendez à la rencontre des Madianites, et avant qu’ils n’arrivent, occupez les gués jusqu’à Beth-Bara tout au long du Jourdain.”
25 They captured the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, killing Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeeb at the wine press of Zeeb. Then they pursued Midian and carried the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.	25 Ils firent prisonniers les deux chefs de Madian, Oreb et Zéeb, ils tuèrent Oreb au Rocher-d’Oreb, et Zéeb, au Pressoir-de-Zéeb. Revenant de la poursuite des Madianites, ils rapportèrent à Gédéon, d’au-delà du Jourdain, les têtes d’Oreb et de Zéeb.
