NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
After Ehud's death, however, the Israelites again offended the LORD.1 Addideruntque filii Israel facere malum in conspectu Domini post mortem Aod,
So the LORD allowed them to fall into the power of the Canaanite king, Jabin, who reigned in Hazor. The general of his army was Sisera, who dwelt in Harosheth-ha-goiim.2 et tradidit illos Dominus in manu Iabin regis Chanaan, qui regnavit in Asor. Habuitque ducem exercitus sui nomine Sisaram: ipse autem habitabat in Haroseth gentium.
But the Israelites cried out to the LORD; for with his nine hundred iron chariots he sorely oppressed the Israelites for twenty years.3 Clamaveruntque filii Israel ad Dominum; nongentos enim habebat falcatos currus et per viginti annos vehementer oppresserat eos.
At this time the prophetess Deborah, wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel.4 Erat autem Debora prophetis, uxor Lapidoth, quae iudicabat Israel in illo tempore.
She used to sit under Deborah's palm tree, situated between Ramah and Bethel in the mountain region of Ephraim, and there the Israelites came up to her for judgment.5 Et sedebat sub palma Deborae inter Rama et Bethel in monte Ephraim; ascendebantque ad eam filii Israel in iudicium.
She sent and summoned Barak, son of Abinoam, from Kedesh of Naphtali. "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, commands," she said to him; "go, march on Mount Tabor, and take with you ten thousand Naphtalites and Zebulunites.6 Quae misit et vocavit Barac filium Abinoem de Cedes Nephthali dixitque ad eum: “ Praecepit tibi Dominus, Deus Israel: Vade et duc exercitum in montem Thabor tollesque tecum decem milia pugnatorum de filiis Nephthali et de filiis Zabulon.
I will lead Sisera, the general of Jabin's army, out to you at the Wadi Kishon, together with his chariots and troops, and will deliver them into your power."7 Ego autem ducam ad te in loco torrentis Cison Sisaram principem exercitus Iabin et currus eius atque omnem multitudinem et tradam eum in manu tua ”.
But Barak answered her, "If you come with me, I will go; if you do not come with me, I will not go."8 Dixitque ad eam Barac: “ Si venis mecum, vadam; si nolueris venire mecum, non pergam ”.
"I will certainly go with you," she replied, "but you shall not gain the glory in the expedition on which you are setting out, for the LORD will have Sisera fall into the power of a woman." So Deborah joined Barak and journeyed with him to Kedesh.9 Quae dixit ad eum: “ Ibo quidem tecum; sed in hac via non erit tibi gloria, quia in manu mulieris tradet Dominus Sisaram ”.
Surrexit itaque Debora et perrexit cum Barac in Cedes.
Barak summoned Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh, and ten thousand men followed him. Deborah also went up with him.10 Qui, accitis Zabulon et Nephthali in Cedes, ascendit cum decem milibus pugnatorum habens Deboram in comitatu suo.
Now the Kenite Heber had detached himself from his own people, the descendants of Hobab, Moses' brother-in-law, and had pitched his tent by the tere-binth of Zaanannim, which was near Kedesh.11 Haber autem Cinaeus recesserat a ceteris Cinaeis fratribus suis filiis Hobab cognati Moysi et tetendit tabernaculum usque ad quercum in Saananim iuxta Cedes.
It was reported to Sisera that Barak, son of Abinoam, had gone up to Mount Tabor.12 Nuntiatumque est Sisarae quod ascendisset Barac filius Abinoem in montem Thabor,
So Sisera assembled from Harosheth-ha-goiim at the Wadi Kishon all nine hundred of his iron chariots and all his forces.13 et congregavit omnes nongentos falcatos currus omnemque exercitum, qui cum eo erat, de Haroseth gentium ad torrentem Cison.
Deborah then said to Barak, "Be off, for this is the day on which the LORD has delivered Sisera into your power. The LORD marches before you." So Barak went down Mount Tabor, followed by his ten thousand men.14 Dixitque Debora ad Barac: “ Surge: haec est enim dies, in qua tradidit Dominus Sisaram in manus tuas. En ipse ductor est tuus ”. Descendit itaque Barac de monte Thabor, et decem milia pugnatorum cum eo.
And the LORD put Sisera and all his chariots and all his forces to rout before Barak. Sisera himself dismounted from his chariot and fled on foot.15 Perterruitque Dominus Sisaram et omnes currus eius universamque multitudinem in ore gladii ad conspectum Barac, in tantum ut Sisara de curru desiliens pedibus fugeret,
Barak, however, pursued the chariots and the army as far as Harosheth-ha-goiim. The entire army of Sisera fell beneath the sword, not even one man surviving.16 et Barac persequeretur fugientes currus et exercitum usque ad Haroseth gentium, et omnis hostium multitudo usque ad internecionem caderet.
Sisera, in the meantime, had fled on foot to the tent of Jael, wife of the Kenite Heber, since Jabin, king of Hazor, and the family of the Kenite Heber were at peace with one another.17 Sisara autem fugiens pervenit ad tentorium Iahel uxoris Haber Cinaei; erat enim pax inter Iabin regem Asor et domum Haber Cinaei.
Jael went out to meet Sisera and said to him, "Come in, my lord, come in with me; do not be afraid." So he went into her tent, and she covered him with a rug.18 Egressa igitur Iahel in occursum Sisarae dixit ad eum: “ Intra ad me, domine mi; intra, ne timeas ”. Qui ingressus tabernaculum eius et opertus ab ea panno,
He said to her, "Please give me a little water to drink. I am thirsty." But she opened a jug of milk for him to drink, and then covered him over.19 dixit ad eam: “ Da mihi, obsecro, paululum aquae, quia sitio ”. Quae aperuit utrem lactis et dedit ei bibere et operuit illum.
"Stand at the entrance of the tent," he said to her. "If anyone comes and asks, 'Is there someone here?' say, 'No!'"20 Dixitque Sisara ad eam: “ Sta ante ostium tabernaculi et, cum venerit aliquis interrogans te et dicens: “Numquid hic est aliquis?”, respondebis: “Nullus est” ”.
Instead Jael, wife of Heber, got a tent peg and took a mallet in her hand. While Sisera was sound asleep, she stealthily approached him and drove the peg through his temple down into the ground, so that he perished in death.21 Tulit porro Iahel uxor Haber clavum tabernaculi assumens pariter malleum; et ingressa abscondite et cum silentio, posuit supra tempus capitis eius clavum, percussumque malleo defixit in cerebrum usque ad terram; qui soporem morti socians defecit et mortuus est.
Then when Barak came in pursuit of Sisera, Jael went out to meet him and said to him, "Come, I will show you the man you seek." So he went in with her, and there lay Sisera dead, with the tent peg through his temple.22 Et ecce Barac sequens Sisaram veniebat; egressaque Iahel in occursum eius dixit ei: “ Veni, et ostendam tibi virum, quem quaeris ”. Qui cum intrasset ad eam, vidit Sisaram iacentem mortuum et clavum infixum in tempore eius.
Thus on that day God humbled the Canaanite king, Jabin, before the Israelites;23 Humiliavit ergo Deus in die illo Iabin regem Chanaan coram filiis Israel,
their power weighed ever heavier upon him, till at length they destroyed the Canaanite king, Jabin.24 qui crescebant cotidie et forti manu opprimebant Iabin regem Chanaan, donec delerent eum.
