Hebrews 9

NEW AMERICAN BIBLEKING JAMES BIBLE
Now (even) the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary.1 Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary.
For a tabernacle was constructed, the outer one, in which were the lampstand, the table, and the bread of offering; this is called the Holy Place.2 For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary.
Behind the second veil was the tabernacle called the Holy of Holies,3 And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all;
in which were the gold altar of incense and the ark of the covenant entirely covered with gold. In it were the gold jar containing the manna, the staff of Aaron that had sprouted, and the tablets of the covenant.4 Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;
Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the place of expiation. Now is not the time to speak of these in detail.5 And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.
With these arrangements for worship, the priests, in performing their service, go into the outer tabernacle repeatedly,6 Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God.
but the high priest alone goes into the inner one once a year, not without blood that he offers for himself and for the sins of the people.7 But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:
In this way the holy Spirit shows that the way into the sanctuary had not yet been revealed while the outer tabernacle still had its place.8 The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:
This is a symbol of the present time, in which gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the worshiper in conscience9 Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;
but only in matters of food and drink and various ritual washings: regulations concerning the flesh, imposed until the time of the new order.10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.
But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that have come to be, passing through the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made by hands, that is, not belonging to this creation,11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
he entered once for all into the sanctuary, not with the blood of goats and calves but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
For if the blood of goats and bulls and the sprinkling of a heifer's ashes can sanctify those who are defiled so that their flesh is cleansed,13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works to worship the living God.14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
For this reason he is mediator of a new covenant: since a death has taken place for deliverance from transgressions under the first covenant, those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance.15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
Now where there is a will, the death of the testator must be established.16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.
For a will takes effect only at death; it has no force while the testator is alive.17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.
Thus not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood.18 Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.
When every commandment had been proclaimed by Moses to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves (and goats), together with water and crimson wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,
saying, "This is 'the blood of the covenant which God has enjoined upon you.'"20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.
In the same way, he sprinkled also the tabernacle and all the vessels of worship with blood.21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.
According to the law almost everything is purified by blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
Therefore, it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified by these rites, but the heavenly things themselves by better sacrifices than these.23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
For Christ did not enter into a sanctuary made by hands, a copy of the true one, but heaven itself, that he might now appear before God on our behalf.24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:
Not that he might offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters each year into the sanctuary with blood that is not his own;25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;
if that were so, he would have had to suffer repeatedly from the foundation of the world. But now once for all he has appeared at the end of the ages to take away sin by his sacrifice.26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
Just as it is appointed that human beings die once, and after this the judgment,27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
so also Christ, offered once to take away the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to take away sin but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him.28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
