NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
Let every person be subordinate to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been established by God.1 Let every soul be subject to higher powers: for there is no power but from God: and those that are, are ordained of God.
Therefore, whoever resists authority opposes what God has appointed, and those who oppose it will bring judgment upon themselves.2 Therefore he that resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God. And they that resist, purchase to themselves damnation.
For rulers are not a cause of fear to good conduct, but to evil. Do you wish to have no fear of authority? Then do what is good and you will receive approval from it,3 For princes are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good: and thou shalt have praise from the same.
for it is a servant of God for your good. But if you do evil, be afraid, for it does not bear the sword without purpose; it is the servant of God to inflict wrath on the evildoer.4 For he is God's minister to thee, for good. But if thou do that which is evil, fear: for he beareth not the sword in vain. For he is God's minister: an avenger to execute wrath upon him that doth evil.
Therefore, it is necessary to be subject not only because of the wrath but also because of conscience.5 Wherefore be subject of necessity, not only for wrath, but also for conscience' sake.
This is why you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.6 For therefore also you pay tribute. For they are the ministers of God, serving unto this purpose.
Pay to all their dues, taxes to whom taxes are due, toll to whom toll is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.7 Render therefore to all men their dues. Tribute, to whom tribute is due: custom, to whom custom: fear, to whom fear: honour, to whom honour.
Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another. For he that loveth his neighbour, hath fulfilled the law.
The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not covet," and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this saying, (namely) "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."9 For Thou shalt not commit adultery: Thou shalt not kill: Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness: Thou shalt not covet: and if there be any other commandment, it is comprised in this word, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law.10 The love of our neighbour worketh no evil. Love therefore is the fulfilling of the law.
And do this because you know the time; it is the hour now for you to awake from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed;11 And that knowing the season; that it is now the hour for us to rise from sleep. For now our salvation is nearer than when we believed.
the night is advanced, the day is at hand. Let us then throw off the works of darkness (and) put on the armor of light;12 The night is passed, and the day is at hand. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armour of light.
let us conduct ourselves properly as in the day, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in promiscuity and licentiousness, not in rivalry and jealousy.13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day: not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and impurities, not in contention and envy:
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the desires of the flesh.14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh in its concupiscences.
