NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior of the country and came (down) to Ephesus where he found some disciples.1 Factum est autem, cum Apollo esset Corinthi, ut Paulus, peragratissuperioribus partibus, veniret Ephesum et inveniret quosdam discipulos;
He said to them, "Did you receive the holy Spirit when you became believers?" They answered him, "We have never even heard that there is a holy Spirit."2 dixitque ad eos: “ Si Spiritum Sanctum accepistis credentes? ”. At illi adeum: “ Sed neque, si Spiritus Sanctus est, audivimus ”.
He said, "How were you baptized?" They replied, "With the baptism of John."3 Ille vero ait: “In quo ergo baptizati estis? ”. Qui dixerunt: “ In Ioannis baptismate ”.
Paul then said, "John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus."4 Dixit autem Paulus: “ Ioannes baptizavit baptisma paenitentiae, populo dicensin eum, qui venturus esset post ipsum ut crederent, hoc est in Iesum ”.
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.5 Hisauditis, baptizati sunt in nomine Domini Iesu;
And when Paul laid (his) hands on them, the holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.6 et cum imposuisset illis manusPaulus, venit Spiritus Sanctus super eos, et loquebantur linguis etprophetabant.
Altogether there were about twelve men.7 Erant autem omnes viri fere duodecim.
He entered the synagogue, and for three months debated boldly with persuasive arguments about the kingdom of God.8 Introgressus autem synagogam cum fiducia loquebatur per tres menses disputanset suadens de regno Dei.
But when some in their obstinacy and disbelief disparaged the Way before the assembly, he withdrew and took his disciples with him and began to hold daily discussions in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.9 Cum autem quidam indurarentur et non crederentmaledicentes viam coram multitudine, discedens ab eis segregavit discipulos,cotidie disputans in schola Tyranni.
This continued for two years with the result that all the inhabitants of the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord, Jews and Greeks alike.10 Hoc autem factum est per biennium, itaut omnes, qui habitabant in Asia, audirent verbum Domini, Iudaei atque Graeci.
So extraordinary were the mighty deeds God accomplished at the hands of Paul11 Virtutesque non quaslibet Deus faciebat per manus Pauli,
that when face cloths or aprons that touched his skin were applied to the sick, their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them.12 ita ut etiamsuper languidos deferrentur a corpore eius sudaria vel semicinctia, etrecederent ab eis languores, et spiritus nequam egrederentur.
Then some itinerant Jewish exorcists tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those with evil spirits, saying, "I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches."13 Tentaverunt autem quidam et de circumeuntibus Iudaeis exorcistis invocaresuper eos, qui habebant spiritus malos, nomen Domini Iesu dicentes: “ Adiurovos per Iesum, quem Paulus praedicat ”.
When the seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish high priest, tried to do this,14 Erant autem cuiusdam Scevae Iudaeiprincipis sacerdotum septem filii, qui hoc faciebant.
the evil spirit said to them in reply, "Jesus I recognize, Paul I know, but who are you?"15 Respondens autemspiritus nequam dixit eis: “ Iesum novi et Paulum scio; vos autem qui estis?”.
The person with the evil spirit then sprang at them and subdued them all. He so overpowered them that they fled naked and wounded from that house.16 Et insiliens homo in eos, in quo erat spiritus malus, dominatus amboruminvaluit contra eos, ita ut nudi et vulnerati effugerent de domo illa.
When this became known to all the Jews and Greeks who lived in Ephesus, fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in great esteem.17 Hocautem notum factum est omnibus Iudaeis atque Graecis, qui habitabant Ephesi, etcecidit timor super omnes illos, et magnificabatur nomen Domini Iesu.
Many of those who had become believers came forward and openly acknowledged their former practices.18 Multique credentium veniebant confitentes et annuntiantes actus suos.
Moreover, a large number of those who had practiced magic collected their books and burned them in public. They calculated their value and found it to be fifty thousand silver pieces.19 Multiautem ex his, qui fuerant curiosa sectati, conferentes libros combusserunt coramomnibus; et computaverunt pretia illorum et invenerunt argenti quinquagintamilia.
Thus did the word of the Lord continue to spread with influence and power.20 Ita fortiter verbum Domini crescebat et convalescebat.
When this was concluded, Paul made up his mind to travel through Macedonia and Achaia, and then to go on to Jerusalem, saying, "After I have been there, I must visit Rome also."21 His autem expletis, proposuit Paulus in Spiritu, transita Macedonia etAchaia, ire Hierosolymam, dicens: “ Postquam fuero ibi, oportet me et Romamvidere ”.
Then he sent to Macedonia two of his assistants, Timothy and Erastus, while he himself stayed for a while in the province of Asia.22 Mittens autem in Macedoniam duos ex ministrantibus sibi,Timotheum et Erastum, ipse remansit ad tempus in Asia.
About that time a serious disturbance broke out concerning the Way.23 Facta est autem in illo tempore turbatio non minima de via.
There was a silversmith named Demetrius who made miniature silver shrines of Artemis and provided no little work for the craftsmen.24 Demetrius enimquidam nomine, argentarius, faciens aedes argenteas Dianae praestabatartificibus non modicum quaestum;
He called a meeting of these and other workers in related crafts and said, "Men, you know well that our prosperity derives from this work.25 quos congregans et eos, qui eiusmodi erantopifices, dixit: “ Viri, scitis quia de hoc artificio acquisitio est nobis;
As you can now see and hear, not only in Ephesus but throughout most of the province of Asia this Paul has persuaded and misled a great number of people by saying that gods made by hands are not gods at all.26 et videtis et auditis quia non solum Ephesi, sed paene totius Asiae Paulus hicsuadens avertit multam turbam dicens quoniam non sunt dii, qui manibus fiunt.
The danger grows, not only that our business will be discredited, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be of no account, and that she whom the whole province of Asia and all the world worship will be stripped of her magnificence."27 Non solum autem haec periclitatur nobis pars in redargutionem venire, sed etmagnae deae Dianae templum in nihilum reputari, et destrui incipiet maiestaseius, quam tota Asia et orbis colit ”.
When they heard this, they were filled with fury and began to shout, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"28 His auditis, repleti sunt ira et clamabant dicentes: “ Magna DianaEphesiorum! ”;
The city was filled with confusion, and the people rushed with one accord into the theater, seizing Gaius and Aristarchus, the Macedonians, Paul's traveling companions.29 et impleta est civitas confusione, et impetum fecerunt unoanimo in theatrum, rapto Gaio et Aristarcho Macedonibus, comitibus Pauli.
Paul wanted to go before the crowd, but the disciples would not let him,30 Paulo autem volente intrare in populum, non permiserunt discipuli;
and even some of the Asiarchs who were friends of his sent word to him advising him not to venture into the theater.31 quidamautem de Asiarchis, qui erant amici eius, miserunt ad eum rogantes, ne se daretin theatrum.
Meanwhile, some were shouting one thing, others something else; the assembly was in chaos, and most of the people had no idea why they had come together.32 Alii autem aliud clamabant; erat enim ecclesia confusa, etplures nesciebant qua ex causa convenissent.
Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, as the Jews pushed him forward, and Alexander signaled with his hand that he wished to explain something to the gathering.33 De turba autem instruxerunt Alexandrum, propellentibus eum Iudaeis; Alexanderergo, manu silentio postulato, volebat rationem reddere populo.
But when they recognized that he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison, for about two hours, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"34 Quem utcognoverunt Iudaeum esse, vox facta est una omnium quasi per horas duasclamantium: “ Magna Diana Ephesiorum ”.
Finally the town clerk restrained the crowd and said, "You Ephesians, what person is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image that fell from the sky?35 Et cum sedasset scriba turbam,dixit: “ Viri Ephesii, quis enim est hominum, qui nesciat Ephesiorum civitatemcultricem esse magnae Dianae et simulacri a Iove delapsi?
Since these things are undeniable, you must calm yourselves and not do anything rash.36 Cum ergo hiscontradici non possit, oportet vos sedatos esse et nihil temere agere.
The men you brought here are not temple robbers, nor have they insulted our goddess.37 Adduxistis enim homines istos neque sacrilegos neque blasphemantes deam nostram.
If Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a complaint against anyone, courts are in session, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another.38 Quod si Demetrius et, qui cum eo sunt, artifices habent adversus aliquemcausam, conventus forenses aguntur, et proconsules sunt: accusent invicem.
If you have anything further to investigate, let the matter be settled in the lawful assembly,39 Siquid autem ulterius quaeritis, in legitima ecclesia poterit absolvi.
for, as it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of today's conduct. There is no cause for it. We shall (not) be able to give a reason for this demonstration." With these words he dismissed the assembly.40 Nam etpericlitamur argui seditionis hodiernae, cum nullus obnoxius sit, de quo nonpossimus reddere rationem concursus istius ”. Et cum haec dixisset, dimisitecclesiam.
