Deuteronomy 9

1 "Hear, O Israel! You are now about to cross the Jordan to enter in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than yourselves, having large cities fortified to the sky,	1 - Ascolta, Israele. Tu passerai ora il Giordano, per debellare nazioni numerosissime e più forti di te, città grandissime e cinte di mura alte sino al cielo,
2 the Anakim, a people great and tall. You know of them and have heard it said of them, 'Who can stand up against the Anakim?'	2 popoli grandi e potenti, della razza degli Enacim che tu stesso hai veduto e udito, ai quali nessuno può resistere a faccia.
3 Understand, then, today that it is the LORD, your God, who will cross over before you as a consuming fire; he it is who will reduce them to nothing and subdue them before you, so that you can drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the LORD promised you.	3 Saprai dunque ora a prova che il Signore Dio tuo passerà egli stesso avanti a te, fuoco che divora e consuma, per stritolarli, distruggerli e disperderli in breve davanti a te, come t'ha detto.
4 After the LORD, your God, has thrust them out of your way, do not say to yourselves, 'It is because of my merits that the LORD has brought me in to possess this land'; for it is really because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD is driving them out before you.	4 Ma quando il Signore Dio tuo li avrà sterminati dalla tua presenza, non dire: - Per i miei meriti m'ha condotto il Signore a posseder questa terra; come per le loro empietà son state distrutte queste nazioni.-
5 No, it is not because of your merits or the integrity of your heart that you are going in to take possession of their land; but the LORD, your God, is driving these nations out before you on account of their wickedness and in order to keep the promise which he made on oath to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.	5 Non pei tuoi meriti; nè per la rettitudine del cuor tuo, entrerai al possesso delle loro terre; ma perchè esse avevano operato empiamente, son state distrutte al tuo arrivo, ed il Signore ha così adempiuta la parola da lui data con giuramento ai tuoi padri Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe.
6 Understand this, therefore: it is not because of your merits that the LORD, your God, is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.	6 Sappi dunque che non pei tuoi meriti il Signore Dio tuo t'avrà data in possesso quest'ottima terra, mentre anzi tu sei un popolo di durissima testa.
7 "Bear in mind and do not forget how you angered the LORD, your God, in the desert. From the day you left the land of Egypt until you arrived in this place, you have been rebellious toward the LORD.	7 Ripensa, e non lo dimenticare, come tu provocasti nel deserto la collera del Signore Dio tuo. Dal giorno nel quale uscisti dall'Egitto, sino a qui, sempre fosti in contesa col Signore.
8 At Horeb you so provoked the LORD that he was angry enough to destroy you,	8 Perchè anche nell'Horeb lo provocasti, ed egli sdegnato voleva distruggerti,
9 when I had gone up the mountain to receive the stone tablets of the covenant which the LORD made with you. Meanwhile I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights without eating or drinking,	9 quand'io salii il monte per ricevervi le tavole di pietra, le tavole dell'alleanza pattuita con voi dal Signore, e rimasi sul monte quaranta giorni e quaranta notti, senza mangiar pane nè bere acqua.
10 till the LORD gave me the two tablets of stone inscribed, by God's own finger, with a copy of all the words that the LORD spoke to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly.	10 Ed il Signore mi dette due tavole di pietra scritte dal dito di Dio, contenenti tutti i comandamenti da lui dati a voi sul monte, di mezzo al fuoco, quand'era adunata tutta l'assemblea del popolo.
11 Then, at the end of the forty days and forty nights, when the LORD had given me the two stone tablets of the covenant,	11 Passati che furono quaranta giorni ed altrettante notti, il Signore mi dette due tavole di pietra, le tavole dell'alleanza,
12 he said to me, 'Go down from here now, quickly, for your people whom you have brought out of Egypt have become depraved; they have already turned aside from the way I pointed out to them and have made for themselves a molten idol.	12 e mi disse: - Levati, e scendi di qui prestamente, perchè il tuo popolo, che tu conducesti via dall'Egitto, ha presto abbandonato la strada da te mostratagli, e si son fatti [un idolo] di getto. -
13 I have seen now how stiff-necked this people is,' the LORD said to me.	13 Ed il Signore m'aggiunse: - Veggo che questo è un popolo di dura testa;
14 'Let me be, that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under the heavens. I will then make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.'	14 lasciami fare, ch'io lo distrugga, e disperda il suo nome di sotto il cielo; porrò te a capo di un'altra gente più numerosa e più forte di questa.-
15 "When I had come down again from the blazing, fiery mountain, with the two tablets of the covenant in both my hands,	15 Or quando, sceso dal monte fumante, e tenendo nelle due mani le due tavole dell'alleanza,
16 I saw how you had sinned against the LORD, your God: you had already turned aside from the way which the LORD had pointed out to you by making for yourselves a molten calf!	16 ebbi veduto che voi avevate peccato contro il Signore Dio vostro, v'eravate fatti un vitello di getto, ed avevate così presto abbandonata la via che il Signore v'aveva mostrata,
17 Raising the two tablets with both hands I threw them from me and broke them before your eyes.	17 gettai via dalle mie mani le tavole, e le spezzai sotto i vostri occhi.
18 Then, as before, I lay prostrate before the LORD for forty days and forty nights without eating or drinking, because of all the sin you had committed in the sight of the LORD and the evil you had done to provoke him.	18 Poi stetti prostrato un'altra volta davanti al Signore per quaranta giorni e quaranta notti, senza mangiar pane nè bever acqua, a causa di tutt'i vostri peccati, da voi commessi contro al Signore provocandolo alla collera;
19 For I dreaded the fierce anger of the LORD against you: his wrath would destroy you. Yet once again the LORD listened to me.	19 poichè temevo la sua indignazione e la sua ira, con la quale sdegnato contro di voi voleva distruggervi. Ed il Signore m'esaudì anche questa volta.
20 With Aaron, too, the LORD was deeply angry, and would have killed him had I not prayed for him also at that time.	20 Irato pure grandemente verso d'Aronne, voleva punir di morte anche lui, e per lui io similmente pregai.
21 Then, taking the calf, the sinful object you had made, and fusing it with fire, I ground it down to powder as fine as dust, which I threw into the wadi that went down the mountainside.	21 Quanto all'oggetto del vostro peccato, cioè il vitello, lo presi, lo gettai nel fuoco, e fattolo in pezzi e ridottolo interamente in polvere, lo gettai nel torrente che scende dal monte.
22 "At Taberah, at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah likewise, you provoked the LORD to anger.	22 Anche all'Incendio, ed alla Tentazione, ed ai Sepolcri della Concupiscenza, provocaste il Signore.
23 And when he sent you up from Kadesh-barnea to take possession of the land he was giving you, you rebelled against this command of the LORD, your God, and would not trust or obey him.	23 Così pure quando v'ordinò di muovervi da Cadesbarne, dicendovi: - Movetevi, e prendete possesso della terra ch'io v'ho data, - voi disprezzaste il comando del Signore Dio vostro, non gli credeste, e non voleste ascoltar la sua voce.
24 Ever since I have known you, you have been rebels against the LORD.	24 Sempre siete stati ribelli, sino dal giorno che cominciai a conoscervi.
25 "Those forty days, then, and forty nights, I lay prostrate before the LORD, because he had threatened to destroy you.	25 E stetti prostrato dinanzi al Signore quaranta giorni e quaranta notti, supplichevolmente pregandolo acciò non vi sterminasse come aveva minacciato;
26 This was my prayer to him: O Lord GOD, destroy not your people, the heritage which your majesty has ransomed and brought out of Egypt with your strong hand.	26 e pregando dissi: - Signore Iddio, non disperdere il tuo popolo e la tua eredità, che tu liberasti con la tua grandezza, che tu conducesti via con mano potente dall'Egitto.
27 Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Look not upon the stubbornness of this people nor upon their wickedness and sin,	27 Ricordati d'Abramo, d'Isacco e di Giacobbe tuoi servi: non guardar alla durezza di questo popolo, alla sua empietà ed al suo peccato.
28 lest the people from whose land you have brought us say, 'The LORD was not able to bring them into the land he promised them'; or 'Out of hatred for them, he brought them out to slay them in the desert.'	28 Che gli abitanti di quella terra dalla quale tu ci cavasti non abbiano a dire: "Il signore non poteva introdurre [gl'Israeliti] nella terra che aveva loro promessa, e li aveva in odio; perciò li condusse via; per metterli a morte nel deserto".
29 They are, after all, your people and your heritage, whom you have brought out by your great power and with your outstretched arm.	29 Eppure son dessi il tuo popolo, e la tua eredità, che tu conducesti via con la potenza tua grande, e col braccio tuo disteso. -
