NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
In the year the general sent by Sargon, king of Assyria, fought against Ashdod and captured it,1 The year the general-in-chief, sent by Sargon king of Assyria, came to Ashdod and stormed andcaptured it
the LORD gave a warning through Isaiah, the son of Amoz: Go and take off the sackcloth from your waist, and remove the sandals from your feet. This he did, walking naked and barefoot.2 at that time Yahweh spoke through Isaiah son of Amoz and said, 'Go, undo the sackcloth round yourwaist and take the sandals off your feet.' And he did so, and walked about, naked and barefoot.
Then the LORD said: Just as my servant Isaiah has gone naked and barefoot for three years as a sign and portent against Egypt and Ethiopia,3 Yahweh then said, 'As my servant Isaiah has been walking about naked and barefoot for the last threeyears as a sign and portent for Egypt and Cush,
so shall the king of Assyria lead away captives from Egypt, and exiles from Ethiopia, young and old, naked and barefoot, with buttocks uncovered (the shame of Egypt).4 so the king of Assyria wil lead the captives of Egypt and the exiles of Cush, young and old, naked andbarefoot, their buttocks bared, to the shame of Egypt.
They shall be dismayed and ashamed because of Ethiopia, their hope, and because of Egypt, their boast.5 Then they wil be afraid and ashamed of Cush their hope and Egypt their pride,
The inhabitants of this coastland shall say on that day, "Look at our hope! We have fled here for help and deliverance from the king of Assyria; where can we flee now?"6 and the inhabitants of this coast will say on that day, "Look what has happened to our hope, to those towhom we fled for help, to escape from the king of Assyria. How are we going to escape?" '
