NEW AMERICAN BIBLEKING JAMES BIBLE
An oracle concerning Babylon; a vision of Isaiah, son of Amoz.1 The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see.
Upon the bare mountains set up a signal; cry out to them, Wave for them to enter the gates of the volunteers.2 Lift ye up a banner upon the high mountain, exalt the voice unto them, shake the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles.
I have commanded my dedicated soldiers, I have summoned my warriors, eager and bold to carry out my anger.3 I have commanded my sanctified ones, I have also called my mighty ones for mine anger, even them that rejoice in my highness.
Listen! the rumble on the mountains: that of an immense throng! Listen! the noise of kingdoms, nations assembled! The LORD of hosts is mustering an army for battle.4 The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great people; a tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the LORD of hosts mustereth the host of the battle.
They come from a far-off country, and from the end of the heavens, The LORD and the instruments of his wrath, to destroy all the land.5 They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, even the LORD, and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land.
Howl, for the day of the LORD is near; as destruction from the Almighty it comes.6 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.
Therefore all hands fall helpless, the bows of the young men fall from their hands. Every man's heart melts7 Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man's heart shall melt:
in terror. Pangs and sorrows take hold of them, like a woman in labor they writhe; They look aghast at each other, their faces aflame.8 And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.
Lo, the day of the LORD comes, cruel, with wrath and burning anger; To lay waste the land and destroy the sinners within it!9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.
The stars and constellations of the heavens send forth no light; The sun is dark when it rises, and the light of the moon does not shine.10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
Thus I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their guilt. I will put an end to the pride of the arrogant, the insolence of tyrants I will humble.11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.
I will make mortals more rare than pure gold, men, than gold of Ophir.12 I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.
For this I will make the heavens tremble and the earth shall be shaken from its place, At the wrath of the LORD of hosts on the day of his burning anger.13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.
Like a hunted gazelle, or a flock that no one gathers, Every man shall turn to his kindred and flee to his own land.14 And it shall be as the chased roe, and as a sheep that no man taketh up: they shall every man turn to his own people, and flee every one into his own land.
Everyone who is caught shall be run through; to a man, they shall fall by the sword.15 Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is joined unto them shall fall by the sword.
Their infants shall be dashed to pieces in their sight; their houses shall be plundered and their wives ravished.16 Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished.
I am stirring up against them the Medes, who think nothing of silver and take no delight in gold.17 Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it.
The fruit of the womb they shall not spare, nor shall they have eyes of pity for children.18 Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children.
And Babylon, the jewel of kingdoms, the glory and pride of the Chaldeans, Shall be overthrown by God like Sodom and like Gomorrah.19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
She shall never be inhabited, nor dwelt in, from age to age; The Arab shall not pitch his tent there, nor shepherds couch their flocks.20 It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there.
But wildcats shall rest there and owls shall fill the houses; There ostriches shall dwell, and satyrs shall dance.21 But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures; and owls shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there.
Desert beasts shall howl in her castles, and jackals in her luxurious palaces. Her time is near at hand and her days shall not be prolonged.22 And the wild beasts of the islands shall cry in their desolate houses, and dragons in their pleasant palaces: and her time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged.
