Sirach 14

1 Happy the man whose mouth brings him no grief, who is not stung by remorse for sin.	1 Beato l’uomo che non ha peccato con la sua bocca e non è tormentato dal rimorso dei peccati.
2 Happy the man whose conscience does not reproach him, who has not lost hope.	2 Beato chi non ha nulla da rimproverarsi e chi non ha perduto la sua speranza.
3 Wealth ill becomes the mean man; and to the miser, of what use is gold?	3 A un uomo gretto non va bene la ricchezza, a che cosa servono gli averi a un uomo avaro?
4 What he denies himself he collects for others, and in his possessions a stranger will revel.	4 Chi accumula a forza di privazioni, accumula per altri; con i suoi beni faranno festa gli estranei.
5 To whom will he be generous who is stingy with himself and does not enjoy what is his own?	5 Chi è cattivo con se stesso con chi sarà buono? Certo non godrà delle sue ricchezze.
6 None is more stingy than he who is stingy with himself; he punishes his own miserliness.	6 Nessuno è peggiore di chi danneggia se stesso, e questa è la ricompensa della sua malizia:
7 If ever he is generous, it is by mistake; and in the end he displays his greed.	7 anche se fa il bene, lo fa per distrazione, e alla fine sarà manifesta la sua malizia.
8 In the miser's opinion his share is too small;	8 È malvagio l’uomo dall’occhio invidioso, volge lo sguardo altrove e disprezza la vita altrui.
9 he refuses his neighbor and brings ruin on himself.	9 L’occhio dell’avaro non si accontenta della sua parte, una malvagia ingiustizia gli inaridisce l’anima.
10 The miser's eye is rapacious for bread, but on his own table he sets it stale.	10 Un occhio cattivo è invidioso anche del pane ed è proprio questo che manca sulla sua tavola.
11 My son, use freely whatever you have and enjoy it as best you can;	11 Figlio, per quanto ti è possibile, tràttati bene e presenta al Signore le offerte dovute.
12 Remember that death does not tarry, nor have you been told the grave's appointed time.	12 Ricòrdati che la morte non tarderà e il decreto degli inferi non ti è stato rivelato.
13 Before you die, be good to your friend, and give him a share in what you possess.	13 Prima di morire fa’ del bene all’amico, secondo le tue possibilità sii generoso con lui.
14 Deprive not yourself of present good things, let no choice portion escape you.	14 Non privarti di un giorno felice, non ti sfugga nulla di un legittimo desiderio.
15 Will you not leave your riches to others, and your earnings to be divided by lot?	15 Non lascerai forse a un altro i frutti del tuo lavoro, e le tue fatiche per essere divise fra gli eredi?
16 Give, take, and treat yourself well, for in the nether world there are no joys to seek.	16 Regala e accetta regali, e divèrtiti, perché negli inferi non si ricerca l’allegria.
17 All flesh grows old, like a garment; the age-old law is: All must die.	17 Ogni corpo invecchia come un abito, è una legge da sempre: «Devi morire!».
18 As with the leaves that grow on a vigorous tree: one falls off and another sprouts-- So with the generations of flesh and blood: one dies and another is born.	18 Come foglie verdi su un albero frondoso, alcune cadono e altre germogliano, così sono le generazioni umane: una muore e un’altra nasce.
19 All man's works will perish in decay, and his handiwork will follow after him.	19 Ogni opera corruttibile scompare e chi la compie se ne andrà con essa.
20 Happy the man who meditates on wisdom, and reflects on knowledge;	20 Beato l’uomo che si dedica alla sapienza e riflette con la sua intelligenza,
21 Who ponders her ways in his heart, and understands her paths;	21 che medita nel cuore le sue vie e con la mente ne penetra i segreti.
22 Who pursues her like a scout, and lies in wait at her entry way;	22 La insegue come un cacciatore, si apposta sui suoi sentieri.
23 Who peeps through her windows, and listens at her doors;	23 Egli spia alle sue finestre e sta ad ascoltare alla sua porta.
24 Who encamps near her house, and fastens his tent pegs next to her walls;	24 Sosta vicino alla sua casa e fissa il picchetto nelle sue pareti,
25 Who pitches his tent beside her, and lives as her welcome neighbor;	25 alza la propria tenda presso di lei e si ripara in un rifugio di benessere,
26 Who builds his nest in her leafage, and lodges in her branches;	26 mette i propri figli sotto la sua protezione e sotto i suoi rami soggiorna;
27 Who takes shelter with her from the heat, and dwells in her home.	27 da lei è protetto contro il caldo, e nella sua gloria egli abita.
