Sirach 14

1 Happy the man whose mouth brings him no grief, who is not stung by remorse for sin.	1 Beato l'uomo che non ha peccato con le parole e non è tormentato dal rimorso dei peccati.
2 Happy the man whose conscience does not reproach him, who has not lost hope.	2 Beato chi non ha nulla da rimproverarsi e chi non ha perduto la sua speranza.
3 Wealth ill becomes the mean man; and to the miser, of what use is gold?	3 A un uomo gretto non conviene la ricchezza, a che servono gli averi a un uomo avaro?
4 What he denies himself he collects for others, and in his possessions a stranger will revel.	4 Chi accumula a forza di privazioni accumula per altri, con i suoi beni faran festa gli estranei.
5 To whom will he be generous who is stingy with himself and does not enjoy what is his own?	5 Chi è cattivo con se stesso con chi si mostrerà buono? Non sa godere delle sue ricchezze.
6 None is more stingy than he who is stingy with himself; he punishes his own miserliness.	6 Nessuno è peggiore di chi tormenta se stesso; questa è la ricompensa della sua malizia.
7 If ever he is generous, it is by mistake; and in the end he displays his greed.	7 Se fa il bene, lo fa per distrazione; ma alla fine mostrerà la sua malizia.
8 In the miser's opinion his share is too small;	8 È malvagio l'uomo dall'occhio invidioso; volge altrove lo sguardo e disprezza la vita altrui.
9 he refuses his neighbor and brings ruin on himself.	9 L'occhio dell'avaro non si accontenta di una parte, l'insana cupidigia inaridisce l'anima sua.
10 The miser's eye is rapacious for bread, but on his own table he sets it stale.	10 Un occhio cattivo è invidioso anche del pane e sulla sua tavola esso manca.
11 My son, use freely whatever you have and enjoy it as best you can;	11 Figlio, per quanto ti è possibile, tràttati bene e presenta al Signore le offerte dovute.
12 Remember that death does not tarry, nor have you been told the grave's appointed time.	12 Ricòrdati che la morte non tarderà e il decreto degli inferi non t'è stato rivelato.
13 Before you die, be good to your friend, and give him a share in what you possess.	13 Prima di morire fa' del bene all'amico, secondo le tue possibilità sii con lui generoso.
14 Deprive not yourself of present good things, let no choice portion escape you.	14 Non privarti di un giorno felice; non ti sfugga alcuna parte di un buon desiderio.
15 Will you not leave your riches to others, and your earnings to be divided by lot?	15 Forse non lascerai a un altro le tue sostanze e le tue fatiche per esser divise fra gli eredi?
16 Give, take, and treat yourself well, for in the nether world there are no joys to seek.	16 Regala e accetta regali, distrai l'anima tua, perché negli inferi non c'è gioia da ricercare.
17 All flesh grows old, like a garment; the age-old law is: All must die.	17 Ogni corpo invecchia come un abito, è una legge da sempre: "Certo si muore!".
18 As with the leaves that grow on a vigorous tree: one falls off and another sprouts-- So with the generations of flesh and blood: one dies and another is born.	18 Come foglie verdi su un albero frondoso: le une lascia cadere, altre ne fa spuntare, lo stesso avviene per le generazioni di carne e di sangue: le une muoiono, altre ne nascono.
19 All man's works will perish in decay, and his handiwork will follow after him.	19 Ogni opera corruttibile scompare; chi la compie se ne andrà con essa.
20 Happy the man who meditates on wisdom, and reflects on knowledge;	20 Beato l'uomo che medita sulla sapienza e ragiona con l'intelligenza,
21 Who ponders her ways in his heart, and understands her paths;	21 e considera nel cuore le sue vie: ne penetrerà con la mente i segreti.
22 Who pursues her like a scout, and lies in wait at her entry way;	22 La insegue come uno che segue una pista, si apposta sui suoi sentieri.
23 Who peeps through her windows, and listens at her doors;	23 Egli spia alle sue finestre e starà ad ascoltare alla sua porta.
24 Who encamps near her house, and fastens his tent pegs next to her walls;	24 Fa sosta vicino alla sua casa e fisserà un chiodo nelle sue pareti;
25 Who pitches his tent beside her, and lives as her welcome neighbor;	25 alzerà la propria tenda presso di essa e si riparerà in un rifugio di benessere;
26 Who builds his nest in her leafage, and lodges in her branches;	26 metterà i propri figli sotto la sua protezione e sotto i suoi rami soggiornerà;
27 Who takes shelter with her from the heat, and dwells in her home.	27 da essa sarà protetto contro il caldo, egli abiterà all'ombra della sua gloria.
