NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	BIBLIA
1 For all men were by nature foolish who were in ignorance of God, and who from the good things seen did not succeed in knowing him who is, and from studying the works did not discern the artisan;	1 Sí, vanos por naturaleza todos los hombres en quienes había ignorancia de Dios y no fueron capaces de conocer por las cosas buenas que se ven a Aquél que es, ni, atendiendo a las obras, reconocieron al Artífice;
2 But either fire, or wind, or the swift air, or the circuit of the stars, or the mighty water, or the luminaries of heaven, the governors of the world, they considered gods.	2 sino que al fuego, al viento, al aire ligero, a la bóveda estrellada, al agua impetuosa o a las lumbreras del cielo los consideraron como dioses, señores del mundo.
3 Now if out of joy in their beauty they thought them gods, let them know how far more excellent is the Lord than these; for the original source of beauty fashioned them.	3 Que si, cautivados por su belleza, los tomaron por dioses, sepan cuánto les aventaja el Señor de éstos, pues fue el Autor mismo de la belleza quien los creó.
4 Or if they were struck by their might and energy, let them from these things realize how much more powerful is he who made them.	4 Y si fue su poder y eficiencia lo que les dejó sobrecogidos, deduzcan de ahí cuánto más poderoso es Aquel que los hizo;
5 For from the greatness and the beauty of created things their original author, by analogy, is seen.	5 pues de la grandeza y hermosura de las criaturas se llega, por analogía, a contemplar a su Autor.
6 But yet, for these the blame is less; For they indeed have gone astray perhaps, though they seek God and wish to find him.	6 Con todo, no merecen éstos tan grave reprensión, pues tal vez caminan desorientados buscando a Dios y queriéndole hallar.
7 For they search busily among his works, but are distracted by what they see, because the things seen are fair.	7 Como viven entre sus obras, se esfuerzan por conocerlas, y se dejan seducir por lo que ven. ¡Tan bellas se presentan a los ojos!
8 But again, not even these are pardonable.	8 Pero, por otra parte, tampoco son éstos excusables;
9 For if they so far succeeded in knowledge that they could speculate about the world, how did they not more quickly find its LORD?	9 pues si llegaron a adquirir tanta ciencia que les capacitó para indagar el mundo, ¿cómo no llegaron primero a descubrir a su Señor?
10 But doomed are they, and in dead things are their hopes, who termed gods things made by human hands: Gold and silver, the product of art, and likenesses of beasts, or useless stone, the work of an ancient hand.	10 Desgraciados, en cambio, y con la esperanza puesta en seres sin vida, los que llamaron dioses a obras hechas por mano de hombre, al oro, a la plata, trabajados con arte, a representaciones de animales o a una piedra inútil, esculpida por mano antigua.
11 A carpenter may saw out a suitable tree and skillfully scrape off all its bark, And deftly plying his art, produce something fit for daily use,	11 Un leñador abate con la sierra un árbol conveniente, lo despoja diestramente de toda su corteza, lo trabaja con habilidad y fabrica un objeto útil a las necesidades de la vida.
12 and use up the refuse from his handiwork in preparing his food, and have his fill;	12 Con los restos de su trabajo se prepara la comida que le deja satisfecho.
13 Then the good-for-nothing refuse from these remnants, crooked wood grown full of knots, he takes and carves to occupy his spare time. This wood he models with listless skill, and patterns it on the image of a man	13 Queda todavía un resto del árbol que para nada sirve, un tronco torcido y lleno de nudos. Lo toma y lo labra para llenar los ratos de ocio, le da forma con la destreza adquirida en sus tiempos libres; le da el parecido de una imagen de hombre
14 or makes it resemble some worthless beast. When he has daubed it with red and crimsoned its surface with red stain, and daubed over every blemish in it,	14 o bien la semejanza de algún vil animal. Lo pinta de bermellón, colorea de rojo su cuerpo y salva todos sus defectos bajo la capa de pintura.
15 He makes a fitting shrine for it and puts it on the wall, fastening it with a nail.	15 Luego le prepara un alojamiento digno y lo pone en una pared asegurándolo con un hierro.
16 Thus lest it fall down he provides for it, knowing that it cannot help itself; for, truly, it is an image and needs help.	16 Mira por él, no se le caiga, pues sabe que no puede valerse por sí mismo, que sólo es una imagen y necesita que le ayuden.
17 But when he prays about his goods or marriage or children, he is not ashamed to address the thing without a soul. And for vigor he invokes the powerless;	17 Pues bien, cuando por su hacienda, bodas o hijos ruega, no se le cae la cara al dirigirse a este ser sin vida. Y pide salud a un inválido,
18 and for life he entreats the dead; And for aid he beseeches the wholly incompetent, and about travel, something that cannot even walk.	18 vida a un muerto, auxilio al más inexperto, un viaje feliz al que ni de los pies se puede valer,
19 And for profit in business and success with his hands he asks facility of a thing with hands completely inert.	19 y para sus ganancias y empresas, para el exito en el trabajo de sus manos, al ser más desmañado le pide destreza.
