Wisdom 11

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 She made their affairs prosper through the holy prophet.	1 Elle fit prospérer leurs entreprises par la main d'un saint prophète.
2 They journeyed through the uninhabited desert, and in solitudes they pitched their tents;	2 Ils traversèrent un désert inhabité et plantèrent leurs tentes en des lieux inaccessibles.
3 they withstood enemies and took vengeance on their foes.	3 Ils tinrent tête à leurs ennemis et repoussèrent leurs adversaires.
4 When they thirsted, they called upon you, and water was given them from the sheer rock, assuagement for their thirst from the hard stone.	4 Dans leur soif, ils t'invoquèrent: de l'eau leur fut donnée d'un rocher escarpé et, d'une pierre dure,un remède à leur soif.
5 For by the things through which their foes were punished they in their need were benefited.	5 Ainsi ce par quoi avaient été châtiés leurs ennemis devint un bienfait pour eux dans leursdifficultés.
6 Instead of a spring, when the perennial river was troubled with impure blood	6 Tandis que les premiers n'avaient que la source intarissable d'un fleuve que troublait un sang mêléde boue,
7 as a rebuke to the decree for the slaying of infants, You gave them abundant water in an unhoped-for way,	7 en punition d'un décret infanticide. Tu donnas aux tiens, contre tout espoir, une eau abondante,
8 once you had shown by the thirst they then had how you punished their adversaries.	8 montrant par la soif qu'alors ils ressentirent comment tu avais châtié leurs adversaires.
9 For when they had been tried, though only mildly chastised, they recognized how the wicked, condemned in anger, were being tormented.	9 Par leurs épreuves, qui n'étaient pourtant qu'une correction de miséricorde, ils comprirentcomment un jugement de colère torturait les impies;
10 the latter you tested, admonishing them as a father; the former as a stern king you probed and condemned.	10 car eux, tu les avais éprouvés en père qui avertit, mais ceux-là, tu les avais punis en roiinexorable qui condamne,
11 Both those afar off and those close by were afflicted:	11 et de loin comme de près, ils se consumaient pareillement.
12 For a twofold grief took hold of them and a groaning at the remembrance of the ones who had departed.	12 Car une double tristesse les saisit, et un gémissement, au souvenir du passé;
13 For when they heard that the cause of their own torments was a benefit to these others, they recognized the Lord.	13 lorsqu'ils apprirent, en effet, que cela même qui les châtiait était un bienfait pour les autres, ilsreconnurent le Seigneur,
14 Him who of old had been cast out in exposure they indeed mockingly rejected; but in the end of events, they marveled at him, since their thirst proved unlike that of the just.	14 car celui que jadis ils avaient fait exposer, puis repoussé avec dérision, ils l'admirèrent au termedes événements, ayant souffert d'une soif bien différente de celle des justes.
15 And in return for their senseless, wicked thoughts, which misled them into worshiping dumb serpents and worthless insects, You sent upon them swarms of dumb creatures for vengeance;	15 Pour leurs sottes et coupables pensées, qui les égaraient en leur faisant rendre un culte à desreptiles sans raison et à de misérables bestioles, tu leur envoyas en punition une multitude d'animaux sans raison;
16 that they might recognize that a man is punished by the very things through which he sins.	16 afin qu'ils sachent qu'on est châtié par où l'on pèche.
17 For not without means was your almighty hand, that had fashioned the universe from formless matter, to send upon them a drove of bears or fierce lions,	17 Ta main toute puissante, certes, n'était pas embarrassée, -- elle qui a créé le monde d'une matièreinforme -- pour envoyer contre eux une multitude d'ours ou de lions intrépides,
18 Or new-created, wrathful, unknown beasts to breathe forth fiery breath, Or pour out roaring smoke, or flash terrible sparks from their eyes.	18 ou bien des bêtes féroces inconnues, nouvellement créées, pleines de fureur, exhalant un souffleenflammé, émettant une fumée infecte, ou faisant jaillir de leurs yeux de terribles étincelles,
19 Not only could these attack and completely destroy them; even their frightful appearance itself could slay.	19 des bêtes capables, non seulement de les anéantir par leur malfaisance, mais encore de les fairepérir par leur aspect terrifiant.
20 Even without these, they could have been killed at a single blast, pursued by retribution and winnowed out by your mighty spirit; But you have disposed all things by measure and number and weight.	20 Sans cela même, d'un seul souffle ils pouvaient tomber, poursuivis par la Justice, balayés par lesouffle de ta puissance. Mais tu as tout réglé avec mesure, nombre et poids.
21 For with you great strength abides always; who can resist the might of your arm?	21 Car ta grande puissance est toujours à ton service, et qui peut résister à la force de ton bras?
22 Indeed, before you the whole universe is as a grain from a balance, or a drop of morning dew come down upon the earth.	22 Le monde entier est devant toi comme ce qui fait pencher la balance, comme la goutte de roséematinale qui descend sur la terre.
23 But you have mercy on all, because you can do all things; and you overlook the sins of men that they may repent.	23 Mais tu as pitié de tous, parce que tu peux tout, tu fermes les yeux sur les péchés des hommes,pour qu'ils se repentent.
24 For you love all things that are and loathe nothing that you have made; for what you hated, you would not have fashioned.	24 Tu aimes en effet tout ce qui existe, et tu n'as de dégoût pour rien de ce que tu as fait; car si tuavais haï quelque chose, tu ne l'aurais pas formé.
25 And how could a thing remain, unless you willed it; or be preserved, had it not been called forth by you?	25 Et comment une chose aurait-elle subsisté, si tu ne l'avais voulue? Ou comment ce que tu n'auraispas appelé aurait-il été conservé?
26 But you spare all things, because they are yours, O LORD and lover of souls,	26 Mais tu épargnes tout, parce que tout est à toi, Maître ami de la vie!
