1 Who is like the wise man, and who knows the explanation of things? A man's wisdom illumines his face, but an impudent look is resented.	1 Quem é comparável ao sábio, que conhece a razão das coisas? A sabedoria de um homem ilumina-lhe o semblante e a severidade de seus traços é modificada por ela.
2 Observe the precept of the king, and in view of your oath to God,	2 Observa a ordem do rei e, por causa do juramento feito a Deus,
3 be not hasty to withdraw from the king; do not join in with a base plot, for he does whatever he pleases,	3 não te apresses a fugir de sua presença. Não te comprometas com um mau negócio, porque o rei faz tudo que lhe apraz.
4 because his word is sovereign, and who can say to him, "What are you doing?"	4 Com efeito, sua palavra é soberana; e quem ousaria dizer-lhe: Que fazes tu?
5 "He who keeps the commandment experiences no evil, and the wise man's heart knows times and judgments;	5 Aquele que observa o preceito não provará mal algum, e o coração de um sábio conhece o tempo e o julgamento.
6 for there is a time and a judgment for everything."--Yet it is a great affliction for man	6 Porque para tudo há um tempo e um julgamento, e a desgraça pesa muito forte sobre o homem.
7 that he is ignorant of what is to come; for who will make known to him how it will be?	7 Ele não conhece o futuro; quem lhe poderia dizer como as coisas se passarão?
8 There is no man who is master of the breath of life so as to retain it, and none has mastery of the day of death. There is no exemption from the struggle, nor are the wicked saved by their wickedness.	8 O homem não é senhor de seu sopro de vida, nem é capaz de o conservar. Ninguém tem poder sobre o dia de sua morte, nem faculdade de afastar esse combate; e o crime não pode salvar o criminoso.
9 All these things I considered and I applied my mind to every work that is done under the sun, while one man tyrannizes over another to his hurt.	9 Eis o que eu vi, aplicando meu espírito a tudo que se faz debaixo do sol, quando um homem domina sobre outro homem para a desgraça deste último:
10 Meanwhile I saw wicked men approach and enter; and as they left the sacred place, they were praised in the city for what they had done. This also is vanity.	10 vi ímpios receberem sepultura e gozarem de repouso, enquanto que aqueles que tinham feito o bem iam para longe do lugar santo e eram esquecidos na cidade. Isto é ainda vaidade.
11 Because the sentence against evildoers is not promptly executed, therefore the hearts of men are filled with the desire to commit evil--	11 Porque a sentença contra os maus atos não é executada imediatamente, o coração dos homens se enche de desejo de fazer o mal;
12 because the sinner does evil a hundred times and survives. Though indeed I know that it shall be well with those who fear God, for their reverence toward him;	12 porque o pecador culpado de cem crimes vê sua vida prolongada. Eu sei, no entanto, que a felicidade é para os que temem a Deus, que sua presença enche de respeito,
13 and that it shall not be well with the wicked man, and he shall not prolong his shadowy days, for his lack of reverence toward God.	13 e que não haverá nenhuma felicidade para o ímpio, o qual, como a sombra, não prolongará sua vida, porque não tem temor a Deus.
14 This is a vanity which occurs on earth: there are just men treated as though they had done evil and wicked men treated as though they had done justly. This, too, I say is vanity.	14 Há outra vaidade que aparece sobre a terra: há justos aos quais acontece o que conviria ao proceder de celerados; e há ímpios aos quais acontece o que conviria ao proceder de justos. Digo que isso é também vaidade.
15 Therefore I commend mirth, because there is nothing good for man under the sun except eating and drinking and mirth: for this is the accompaniment of his toil during the limited days of the life which God gives him under the sun.	15 Por isso louvei a alegria, porque não há nada de melhor para o homem, debaixo do sol, do que comer, beber e se divertir; possa isto acompanhá-lo no seu trabalho, ao longo dos dias que Deus lhe outorgar debaixo do sol.
16 When I applied my heart to know wisdom and to observe what is done on earth,	16 Quando meu espírito se entregou ao estudo da sabedoria e à observação das coisas que se passam sobre a terra - porque nem de dia, nem de noite os olhos dos homens encontram repouso -,
17 I recognized that man is unable to find out all God's work that is done under the sun, even though neither by day nor by night do his eyes find rest in sleep. However much man toils in searching, he does not find it out; and even if the wise man says that he knows, he is unable to find it out.	17 verifiquei, em toda a obra de Deus, que o homem nada pode descobrir do que se faz debaixo do sol. Ele se fatiga a investigar, mas não encontra, e se mesmo um sábio pensasse ter alcançado, isso não aconteceria.
