Job 1

NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
In the land of Uz there was a blameless and upright man named Job, who feared God and avoided evil.1 There was a man in the land of Hus, whose name was Job, and that man was simple and upright, and fearing God, and avoiding evil.
Seven sons and three daughters were born to him;2 And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters.
and he had seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred she-asses, and a great number of work animals, so that he was greater than any of the men of the East.3 And his possession was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a family exceeding great: and this man was great among all the people of the east.
His sons used to take turns giving feasts, sending invitations to their three sisters to eat and drink with them.4 And his sons went, and made a feast by houses every one in his day. And sending they called their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
And when each feast had run its course, Job would send for them and sanctify them, rising early and offering holocausts for every one of them. For Job said, "It may be that my sons have sinned and blasphemed God in their hearts." This Job did habitually.5 And when the days of their feasting were gone about, Job sent to them, and sanctified them: and rising up early offered holocausts for every one of them. For he said: Lest perhaps my sons have sinned, and have blessed God in their hearts. So did Job all days.
One day, when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, Satan also came among them.6 Now on a certain day when the sons of God came to stand before the Lord, Satan also was present among them.
And the LORD said to Satan, "Whence do you come?" Then Satan answered the LORD and said, "From roaming the earth and patrolling it."7 And the Lord said to him: Whence comest thou ? And he answered and said: I have gone round about the earth, and walked through it.
And the LORD said to Satan, "Have you noticed my servant Job, and that there is no one on earth like him, blameless and upright, fearing God and avoiding evil?"8 And the Lord said to him: Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a simple and upright man, and fearing God, and avoiding evil?
But Satan answered the LORD and said, "Is it for nothing that Job is God-fearing?9 And Satan answering, said: Doth Job fear God in vain ?
Have you not surrounded him and his family and all that he has with your protection? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock are spread over the land.10 Hast not thou made a fence for him, and his house, and all his substance round about, blessed the works of his hands, and his possession hath increased on the earth ?
But now put forth your hand and touch anything that he has, and surely he will blaspheme you to your face."11 But stretch forth thy hand a little, and touch all that he hath, and see if he blesseth thee not to thy face.
And the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand upon his person." So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.12 Then the Lord said to Satan: Behold, all that he hath is in thy hand: only put not forth thy hand upon his person. And Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.
And so one day, while his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother,13 Now upon a certain day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother,
a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the asses grazing beside them,14 There came a messenger to Job, and said: The oxen were ploughing, and the asses feeding beside them,
and the Sabeans carried them off in a raid. They put the herdsmen to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you."15 And the Sabeans rushed in, and took all away, and slew the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell thee.
While he was yet speaking, another came and said, "Lightning has fallen from heaven and struck the sheep and their shepherds and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you."16 And while he was yet speaking, another came, and said: The fire of God fell from heaven, and striking the sheep and the servants, hath consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell thee.
While he was yet speaking, another came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three columns, seized the camels, carried them off, and put those tending them to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you."17 And while he also was yet speaking, there came another, and said: The Chaldeans made three troops, and have fallen upon the camels, and taken them, moreover they have slain the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell thee.
While he was yet speaking, another came and said, "Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother,18 He was yet speaking, and behold another came in, and said: Thy sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their elder brother:
when suddenly a great wind came across the desert and smote the four corners of the house. It fell upon the young people and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you."19 A violent wind came on a sudden from the side of the desert, and shook the four corners of the house, and it fell upon thy children and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to fell thee.
Then Job began to tear his cloak and cut off his hair. He cast himself prostrate upon the ground,20 Then Job rose up, and rent his garments, and having shaven his head fell down upon the ground and worshipped,
and said, "Naked I came forth from my mother's womb, and naked shall I go back again. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD!"21 And said: Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away: as it hath pleased the Lord so is it done: blessed be the name of the Lord.
In all this Job did not sin, nor did he say anything disrespectful of God.22 In all these things Job sinned not by his lips, nor spoke he any foolish thing against God.
