1 Judas Maccabeus and his companions entered the villages, secretly, summoned their kinsmen, and by also enlisting others who remained faithful to Judaism, assembled about six thousand men.	1 A Giuda Maccabeo, e quelli, che si stavano con lui, andavan segretamente pei castelli, e convocando i parenti e gli amici, e prendendo seco quelli, che si erano tenuti costanti nel Giudaismo, messer insieme fino a sei mila uomini.
2 They implored the Lord to look kindly upon his people, who were being oppressed on all sides; to have pity on the temple, which was profaned by godless men;	2 E invocavano il Signore, affinchè volgesse il suo sguardo a quel popolo calpestato da tutti, e avesse pietà del suo tempio profanato dagli empj.
3 to have mercy on the city, which was being destroyed and about to be leveled to the ground; to hearken to the blood that cried out to him;	3 E avesse compassione dello sterminio della città, la quale ben presto sarebbe agguagliata al suolo, e ascoltasse la voce del sangue, che alzava le grida a lui:
4 to remember the criminal slaughter of innocent children and the blasphemies uttered against his name; and to manifest his hatred of evil.	4 E si ricordasse della ingiustissima strage de' pargoletti innocenti, e delle bestemmie scagliate contro il suo nome, e ne facesse vendetta.
5 Once Maccabeus got his men organized, the Gentiles could not withstand him, for the Lord's wrath had now changed to mercy.	5 Ma Maccabeo, radunata molta gente, si rendeva terribile alle nazioni: perocché l'ira del Signore si volse in misericordia.
6 Coming unexpectedly upon towns and villages, he would set them on fire. He captured strategic positions, and put to flight a large number of the enemy.	6 Ed egli giungendo repentinamente sopra i castelli, e le città, vi metteva il fuoco, e occupando i siti vantaggiosi faceva stragi non piccole de' nemici:
7 He preferred the nights as being especially helpful for such attacks. Soon the fame of his valor spread everywhere.	7 Principalmente di notte tempo faceva egli queste scorrerie, e la fama del suo valore si spargeva per ogni dove.
8 When Philip saw that Judas was gaining ground little by little and that his successful advances were becoming more frequent, he wrote to Ptolemy, governor of Coelesyria and Phoenicia, to come to the aid of the king's government.	8 Ma Filippo veggendo, che quest'uomo appoco appoco andava facendo progressi, e che il più delle volte le cose gli riuscivan felicemente, scrìsse a Tolomeo Governatore della Celesiria, e della Fenicia, che mandasse aiuti per sostenere il partito del re.
9 Ptolemy promptly selected Nicanor, son of Patroclus, one of the Chief Friends, and sent him at the head of at least twenty thousand armed men of various nations to wipe out the entire Jewish race. With him he associated Gorgias, a professional military commander, well-versed in the art of war.	9 E quegli mandò speditamente Nicanore di Patroclo, uno dei principali signori, e suo amico, dandogli non meno di venti mila armati di varie nazioni, affinchè sterminasse tutta la stirpe Giudea, unendo con lui anche Gorgia uomo di guerra, e molto sperimentato nelle imprese militari.
10 Nicanor planned to raise the two thousand talents of tribute owed by the king to the Romans by selling captured Jews into slavery.	10 E Nicanore fece il conto di supplire al tributo di duemila talenti, che il re dovea dare ai Romani, colla vendita degli schiavi Giudei:
11 So he immediately sent word to the coastal cities, inviting them to buy Jewish slaves and promising to deliver ninety slaves for a talent--little did he dream of the punishment that was to fall upon him from the Almighty.	11 E tosto mandò pelle città marittime a invitare alla compra di schiavi Ebrei promettendo di dare novanta schiavi per un talento, senza riflettere al gastigo dell'Onnipotente, che dovea piombare sopra di lui.
12 When Judas learned of Nicanor's advance and informed his companions about the approach of the army,	12 Ma Giuda subito che ne fu informato fece sapere a' Giudei, che eran seco, la venuta di Nicanore.
13 the cowardly and those who lacked faith in God's justice deserted and got away.	13 De' quali alcuni paurosi non fidandosi della giustizia di Dio, si davano a fuggire:
14 But the others sold everything they had left, and at the same time besought the Lord to deliver those whom the ungodly Nicanor had sold before even meeting them.	14 Altri poi vendevano tutto quel, che lor rimaneva, e insieme pregavano il Signore, che gli liberasse dall'empio Nicanore, il quale prima di averli veduti in viso gli avea venduti:
15 They begged the Lord to do this, if not for their sake, at least for the sake of the covenants made with their forefathers, and because they themselves bore his holy, glorious name.	15 E ciò facesse se non per amore di essi, almen per riguardo al testamento fatto in favore de' padri loro, e perché dal nome di lui grande, e magnifico avean essi nome.
16 Maccabeus assembled his men, six thousand strong, and exhorted them not to be panic-stricken before the enemy, nor to fear the large number of the Gentiles attacking them unjustly, but to fight courageously,	16 Or Maccabeo, raunati i settemila uomini, che eran con lui, gli scongiurò di non venire a patti co' nemici, e a non temere la moltitudine di quelli, che venivano contro di loro, ma combattessero virilmente,
17 keeping before their eyes the lawless outrage perpetrated by the Gentiles against the holy Place and the affliction of the humiliated city, as well as the subversion of their ancestral way of life.	17 Mettendosi davanti agli occhi le indegnità commesse da quelli contro del luogo santo, e le ingiurie, e gli insulti fatti alla città, e le instituzioni stesse de' maggiori abolite.
18 "They trust in weapons and acts of daring," he said, "but we trust in almighty God, who can by a mere nod destroy not only those who attack us, but the whole world."	18 Imperocché quelli nelle armi confidano (diss'egli), e nell'audacia; ma noi nel Signore onnipotente confidiamo, il quale può ad un cenno e questi, che vengono contro di noi, e il mondo tutto distruggere:
19 He went on to tell them of the times when help had been given their ancestors: both the time of Sennacherib, when a hundred and eighty-five thousand of his men were destroyed,	19 E rammentò loro come Dio avea soccorsi i padri loro, e come a tempo, di Sennacherib perirono cento ottantacinque mila uomini:
20 and the time of the battle in Babylonia against the Galatians, when only eight thousand Jews fought along with four thousand Macedonians; yet when the Macedonians were hard pressed, the eight thousand routed one hundred and twenty thousand and took a great quantity of booty, because of the help they received from Heaven.	20 E come nella guerra contro i Calati in Babilonia, allorché si venne alle mani, i Macedoni confederati essendo disanimati, eglino soli in numero di sei mila uccisero cento venti mila uomini mediante l'aiuto dato loro dal cielo, e perciò ottennero grandissimi privilegj.
21 With such words he encouraged them and made them ready to die for their laws and their country. Then Judas divided his army into four,	21 Tali ragionamenti li renderon costanti, e pronti a morire per le leggi, e per la patria.
22 placing his brothers, Simon, Joseph, and Jonathan, each over a division, assigning to each fifteen hundred men.	22 Egli pertanto diede il comando di una parte de' soldati a ciascuno de' suoi fratelli, Simone, Giuseppe, e Gionata, assegnando loro mille cinquecento uomini per ciascheduno.
23 (There was also Eleazar.) After reading to them from the holy book and giving them the watchword, "The Help of God," he himself took charge of the first division and joined in battle with Nicanor.	23 E oltre a ciò lesse ad essi Esdra il libro santo, e dato per segno l'aiuto di Dio, stando egli stesso alla testa dell'esercito, attaccò la zuffa con Nicanore.
24 With the Almighty as their ally, they killed more than nine thousand of the enemy, wounded and disabled the greater part of Nicanor's army, and put all of them to flight.	24 E aiutati dall'Onnipotente uccisero più di nove mila uomini, e messero in fuga l'esercito di Nicanore, la maggior parte rifinito per le ferite.
25 They also seized the money of those who had come to buy them as slaves. When they had pursued the enemy for some time,	25 E tolto il denaro di quelli che eran venuti per comperarli, inseguirono il nemico per lungo tratto.
26 they were obliged to return by reason of the late hour, it was the day before the sabbath, and for that reason they could not continue the pursuit.	26 Ma stretti dall'ora tarda tornaron indietro, perche era la vigilia del sabato, e perciò non continuarono ad inseguirli.
27 They collected the enemy's arms and stripped them of their spoils, and then observed the sabbath with fervent praise and thanks to the Lord who kept them safe for that day on which he let descend on them the first dew of his mercy.	27 Ma raunate le armi, e le spoglie dei nemici, celebrarono il sabato, bene dicendo il Signore, il quale gli avea quel dì liberati, gettando sopra di essi una stilla di sua misericordia.
28 After the sabbath, they gave a share of the booty to the persecuted and to widows and orphans; the rest they divided among themselves and their children.	28 E dopo il sabato fecer parte delle spoglie agli stroppiati, agli orfani, e alle vedove, e il rimanente fu per loro, e pella loro gente.
29 When this was done, they made supplication in common, imploring the merciful Lord to be completely reconciled with his servants.	29 Dopo tali cose fatta in comune l'orazione pregavano il misericordioso Signore, che si placasse per sempre co' servi suoi.
30 They also challenged the forces of Timothy and Bacchides, killed more than twenty thousand of them, and captured some very high fortresses. They divided the enormous plunder, allotting half to themselves and the rest to the persecuted, to orphans, widows, and the aged.	30 Ed essendo stati assaliti dall'esercito di Timoteo, e di Bacehide, ne uccisero più di venti mila uomini, e si impadronirono di altissime fortezze, e fecero gran bottino, dandone ugual porzione agli invalidi, ai pupilli, e alle vedove, e anche ai vecchi.
31 They collected the enemies' weapons and carefully stored them in suitable places; the rest of the spoils they carried to Jerusalem.	31 E raunate tutte le armi de' nemici diligentemente, le riposero in luoghi opportuni; il resto poi delle spoglie le portarono a Gerusalemme:
32 They also killed the commander of Timothy's forces, a most wicked man, who had done great harm to the Jews.	32 E fecer morire Filarche, che avea seguitato Timoteo, ed era uomo scellerato, che molto male avea fatto a' Giudei.
33 While celebrating the victory in their ancestral city, they burned both those who had set fire to the sacred gates and Callisthenes, who had taken refuge in a little house; so he received the reward his wicked deeds deserved.	33 E quando furono in Gerusalemme a render grazie per la vittoria, essendosi quel Callistene, che avea brugiate le porte sante, rifugiato in una certa casa, ve l'abbrugiarono, rendendogli giusta mercede delle sue empietà.
34 The accursed Nicanor, who had brought the thousand slave dealers to buy the Jews,	34 E lo scelleratissiino Nicanore, il quale avea condotti seco mille mercatanti per vender loro i Giudei,
35 after being humbled through the Lord's help by those whom he had thought of no account, laid aside his fine clothes and fled alone across country like a runaway slave, until he reached Antioch. He was eminently successful in destroying his own army.	35 Umiliato col divino aiuto da quelli, ch'ei credeva uomini da nulla, deposte le splendide vesti fuggendo dalla parte del mare, arrivò solo ad Antiochia, ridotto a somma infelicità per la distruzione del suo esercito.
36 So he who had promised to provide tribute for the Romans by the capture of the people of Jerusalem testified that the Jews had a champion, and that they were invulnerable for the very reason that they followed the laws laid down by him. Death of Antiochus	36 Ed egli che avea promesso di pagare il tributo a' Romani colla vendita i degli schiavi Gerosolimitani, adesso dicea pubblicamente, che i Giudei avean, Dio per protettore, ed erano invulnerabili, perché seguivan le leggi date da lui.
