1 Judas Maccabeus and his companions entered the villages, secretly, summoned their kinsmen, and by also enlisting others who remained faithful to Judaism, assembled about six thousand men.	1 Judas, llamado también Macabeo, y sus compañeros entraban sigilosamente en los pueblos, llamaban a sus hermanos de raza y acogiendo a los que permanecían fieles al judaísmo, llegaron a reunir 6.000 hombres.
2 They implored the Lord to look kindly upon his people, who were being oppressed on all sides; to have pity on the temple, which was profaned by godless men;	2 Rogaban al Señor que mirase por aquel pueblo que todos conculcaban; que tuviese piedad del santuario profanado por los hombres impíos;
3 to have mercy on the city, which was being destroyed and about to be leveled to the ground; to hearken to the blood that cried out to him;	3 que se compadeciese de la ciudad destruida y a punto de ser arrasada, y que escuchase las voces de la sangre que clamaba a él;
4 to remember the criminal slaughter of innocent children and the blasphemies uttered against his name; and to manifest his hatred of evil.	4 que se acordase de la inicua matanza de niños inocentes y de las blasfemias proferidas contra su nombre, y que mostrase su odio al mal.
5 Once Maccabeus got his men organized, the Gentiles could not withstand him, for the Lord's wrath had now changed to mercy.	5 Macabeo, con su tropa organizada, fue ya invencible para los gentiles, al haberse cambiado en misericordia la cólera del Señor.
6 Coming unexpectedly upon towns and villages, he would set them on fire. He captured strategic positions, and put to flight a large number of the enemy.	6 Llegando de improviso, incendiaba ciudades y pueblos; después de ocupar las posiciones estratégicas, causaba al enemigo grandes pérdidas.
7 He preferred the nights as being especially helpful for such attacks. Soon the fame of his valor spread everywhere.	7 Prefería la noche como aliada para tales incursiones. La fama de su valor se extendía por todas partes.
8 When Philip saw that Judas was gaining ground little by little and that his successful advances were becoming more frequent, he wrote to Ptolemy, governor of Coelesyria and Phoenicia, to come to the aid of the king's government.	8 Al ver Filipo que este hombre progesaba paulatinamente y que sus éxitos eran cada día más frecuentes, escribió a Tolomeo, estratega de Celesiria y Fenicia para que viniese en ayuda de los intereses del rey.
9 Ptolemy promptly selected Nicanor, son of Patroclus, one of the Chief Friends, and sent him at the head of at least twenty thousand armed men of various nations to wipe out the entire Jewish race. With him he associated Gorgias, a professional military commander, well-versed in the art of war.	9 Este designó enseguida a Nicanor, hijo de Patroclo, uno de sus primeros amigos, y le envió al frente de no menos de 20.000 hombres de todas las naciones para exterminar la raza entera de Judea. Puso a su lado a Gorgias, general con experiencia en lides guerreras.
10 Nicanor planned to raise the two thousand talents of tribute owed by the king to the Romans by selling captured Jews into slavery.	10 Nicanor intentaba, por su parte, saldar con la venta de prisioneros judíos, el tributo de 2.000 talentos que el rey debía a los romanos.
11 So he immediately sent word to the coastal cities, inviting them to buy Jewish slaves and promising to deliver ninety slaves for a talent--little did he dream of the punishment that was to fall upon him from the Almighty.	11 Pronto envió a las ciudades marítimas una invitación para que vinieran a comprar esclavos judíos, prometiendo entregar noventa esclavos por un talento sin esperarse el castigo del Todopoderoso que estaba a punto de caer sobre él.
12 When Judas learned of Nicanor's advance and informed his companions about the approach of the army,	12 Llegó a Judas la noticia de la expedición de Nicanor. Cuando comunicó a los que le acompañaban que el ejército se acercaba,
13 the cowardly and those who lacked faith in God's justice deserted and got away.	13 los cobardes y desconfiados de la justicia divina, comenzaron a escaparse y alejarse del lugar;
14 But the others sold everything they had left, and at the same time besought the Lord to deliver those whom the ungodly Nicanor had sold before even meeting them.	14 los demás vendían todo lo que les quedaba, y pedían al mismo tiempo al Señor que librara a los que el impío Nicanor tenía vendidos aun ante de haberse enfrentado.
15 They begged the Lord to do this, if not for their sake, at least for the sake of the covenants made with their forefathers, and because they themselves bore his holy, glorious name.	15 Si no por ellos, sí por las alianzas con sus padres y porque invocaban en su favor el venerable y majestuoso Nombre.
16 Maccabeus assembled his men, six thousand strong, and exhorted them not to be panic-stricken before the enemy, nor to fear the large number of the Gentiles attacking them unjustly, but to fight courageously,	16 Después de reunir a los suyos, en número de 6.000, el Macabeo les exhortaba a no dejarse amedrentar por los enemigos y a no temer a la muchedumbre de gentiles que injustamente venían contra ellos, sino a combatir con valor,

18 "They trust in weapons and acts of daring," he said, "but we trust in almighty God, who can by a mere nod destroy not only those who attack us, but the whole world."	18 «Ellos, les dijo, confían en sus armas y en su audacia; pero nosotros tenemos nuestra confianza puesta en Dios Todopoderoso, que puede abatir con un gesto a los que vienen contra nosotros y al mundo entero».
19 He went on to tell them of the times when help had been given their ancestors: both the time of Sennacherib, when a hundred and eighty-five thousand of his men were destroyed,	19 Les enumeró los auxilios dispensados a sus antecesores, especialmente frente a Senaquerib, cuando perecieron 185.000,
20 and the time of the battle in Babylonia against the Galatians, when only eight thousand Jews fought along with four thousand Macedonians; yet when the Macedonians were hard pressed, the eight thousand routed one hundred and twenty thousand and took a great quantity of booty, because of the help they received from Heaven.	20 y el recibido en Babilonia, en la batalla contra los gálatas, cuando entraron en acción todos los 8.000 judíos junto a los 4.000 macedonios, y cuando los macedonios se hallaban en apuros, los 8.000 derrotaron a 120.000, gracias al auxilio que les llegó del cielo, y se hicieron con un gran botín.
21 With such words he encouraged them and made them ready to die for their laws and their country. Then Judas divided his army into four,	21 Después de haberlos enardecido con estas palabras y de haberlos dispuesto a morir por las leyes y por la patria, dividió el ejército en cuatro cuerpos.
22 placing his brothers, Simon, Joseph, and Jonathan, each over a division, assigning to each fifteen hundred men.	22 Puso a sus hermanos, Simón, José y Jonatán, al frente de cada cuerpo, dejando a las órdenes de cada uno 1.500 hombres.
23 (There was also Eleazar.) After reading to them from the holy book and giving them the watchword, "The Help of God," he himself took charge of the first division and joined in battle with Nicanor.	23 Además mandó a Esdrías que leyera el libro sagrado; luego, dando como consigna «Auxilio de Dios», él mismo al frente del primer cuerpo trabó combate con Nicanor.
24 With the Almighty as their ally, they killed more than nine thousand of the enemy, wounded and disabled the greater part of Nicanor's army, and put all of them to flight.	24 Al ponerse el Todopoderoso de su parte en la lucha, dieron muerte a más de 9.000 enemigos, hirieron y mutilaron a la mayor parte del ejército de Nicanor, y a todos los demás los pusieron en fuga.
25 They also seized the money of those who had come to buy them as slaves. When they had pursued the enemy for some time,	25 Se apoderaron del dinero de los que habían venido a comprarlos. Después de haberlos perseguido bastante tiempo, se volvieron, obligados por la hora,
26 they were obliged to return by reason of the late hour, it was the day before the sabbath, and for that reason they could not continue the pursuit.	26 pues era víspera del sábado, y por esta causa no continuaron en su persecución.
27 They collected the enemy's arms and stripped them of their spoils, and then observed the sabbath with fervent praise and thanks to the Lord who kept them safe for that day on which he let descend on them the first dew of his mercy.	27 Una vez que hubieron amontonado las armas y recogido los despojos de los enemigos, comenzaron la celebración del sábado, desbordándose en bendiciones y alabanzas al Señor que en aquel día les había salvado, estableciendo el comienzo de su misericordia.
28 After the sabbath, they gave a share of the booty to the persecuted and to widows and orphans; the rest they divided among themselves and their children.	28 Al acabar el sábado, dieron una parte del botín a los que habían sufrido la persecución, así como a las viudas y huérfanos; ellos y sus hijos se repartieron el resto.
29 When this was done, they made supplication in common, imploring the merciful Lord to be completely reconciled with his servants.	29 Hecho esto, en rogativa pública rogaron al Señor misericordioso que se reconciliara del todo con sus siervos.
30 They also challenged the forces of Timothy and Bacchides, killed more than twenty thousand of them, and captured some very high fortresses. They divided the enormous plunder, allotting half to themselves and the rest to the persecuted, to orphans, widows, and the aged.	30 En su combate con las tropas de Timoteo y Báquides, mataron a éstos más de 20.000 hombres, se adueñaron por completo de altas fortalezas y dividieron el inmenso botín en partes iguales, una para ellos y otra para los que habían sufrido la persecución, los huérfanos y las viudas, así como para los ancianos.
31 They collected the enemies' weapons and carefully stored them in suitable places; the rest of the spoils they carried to Jerusalem.	31 Con todo cuidado reunieron las armas capturadas en lugares convenientes y llevaron a Jerusalén el resto de los despojos.
32 They also killed the commander of Timothy's forces, a most wicked man, who had done great harm to the Jews.	32 Mataron al filarca de la escolta de Timoteo, hombre muy impío que había causado mucho pesar a los judíos.
33 While celebrating the victory in their ancestral city, they burned both those who had set fire to the sacred gates and Callisthenes, who had taken refuge in a little house; so he received the reward his wicked deeds deserved.	33 Mientras celebraban la victoria en su patria, quemaron a los que habían incendiado los portones sagrados, así como a Calístenes, que estaban refugiados en una misma casita, y que recibieron así la merecida paga de su impiedad.
34 The accursed Nicanor, who had brought the thousand slave dealers to buy the Jews,	34 Nicanor, tres veces criminal, que había traído a los mil comerciantes para la venta de los judíos,
35 after being humbled through the Lord's help by those whom he had thought of no account, laid aside his fine clothes and fled alone across country like a runaway slave, until he reached Antioch. He was eminently successful in destroying his own army.	35 con el auxilio del Señor, quedó humillado por los mismos que él despreciaba como los más viles; despojándose de sus galas, como un fugitivo a campo través, buscando la soledad llegó hasta Antioquía con mucha suerte, después del desastre de su ejército.
36 So he who had promised to provide tribute for the Romans by the capture of the people of Jerusalem testified that the Jews had a champion, and that they were invulnerable for the very reason that they followed the laws laid down by him. Death of Antiochus	36 El que había pretendido saldar el tributo debido a los romanos con la venta de los prisioneros de Jerusalén, proclamaba que los judíos tenían a Alguien que les defendía, y que los judíos eran invulnerables por el hecho de que seguían las leyes prescritas por Aquél.
