1 Three years later, Judas and his men learned that Demetrius, son of Seleucus, had sailed into the port of Tripolis with a powerful army and a fleet,	1 Al cabo de tres años, Judas y sus hombres recibieron la noticia de que Demetrio, el hijo de Seleuco, había atracado en el puerto de Trípoli con un poderoso ejército y una flota,
2 and that he had occupied the country, after doing away with Antiochus and his guardian Lysias.	2 adueñándose del país y haciendo ejecutar a Antíoco y a su tutor Lisias.
3 A certain Alcimus, a former high priest, who had willfully incurred defilement at the time of the revolt, realized that there was no way for him to salvage his position and regain access to the holy altar.	3 Un cierto Alcimo, que antes había sido Sumo Sacerdote, pero que se había contaminado voluntariamente en el tiempo de la ruptura con el paganismo, comprendiendo que él ya no podía rehabilitarse ni acceder al altar sagrado,
4 So he went to King Demetrius in the year one hundred and fifty-one and presented him with a gold crown and a palm branch, as well as some of the customary olive branches from the temple. On that occasion he kept quiet.	4 fue a ver al rey Demetrio hacia el año ciento cincuenta y uno, y le obsequió una corona de oro y una palma, además de los acostumbrados ramos de olivo del templo. 5 But he found an opportunity to further his mad scheme when he was invited to the council by Demetrius and questioned about the dispositions and intentions of the Jews. He replied:	5 Pero él encontró una ocasión propicia para sus perversos designios, cuando Demetrio lo convocó ante el Consejo, y lo consultó acerca de las actitudes y planes de los judíos. Alcimo respondió:
6 "Those Jews called Hasideans, led by Judas Maccabeus, are warmongers, who stir up sedition and keep the kingdom from enjoying peace and quiet.	6 «Los judíos llamados asideos, capitaneados por Judas Macabeo, fomentan la guerra y las sediciones, y no dejan que el reino viva en paz.
7 For this reason, now that I am deprived of my ancestral dignity, that is to say, the high priesthood, I have come here--	7 Debido a eso, aunque he sido despojado de la dignidad heredada de mis antepasados –me refiero al sumo sacerdocio– he venido aquí,
8 first, out of my genuine concern for the king's interests, and secondly, out of consideration for my own countrymen, since our entire nation is suffering great affliction from the unreasonable conduct of the people just mentioned.	8 en primer lugar, sinceramente preocupado por los intereses del rey y, en segundo lugar, por consideración hacia mis compatriotas. 9 When you have informed yourself in detail on these matters, O king, act in the interest of our country and its hard-pressed people with the same gracious consideration that you show toward all.	9 Por eso, ya que tú eres el rey, una vez que te informes detalladamente de todo esto, vela por nuestro país y nuestra nación amenazados por todas partes, de acuerdo con los sentimientos humanitarios que demuestras hacia todos.
10 As long as Judas is around, it is impossible for the state to enjoy peace."	10 Ciertamente, mientras Judas viva, es imposible que el Estado goce de paz».
11 When he had said this, the other Friends who were hostile to Judas quickly added fuel to Demetrius' indignation.	11 Apenas Alcimo pronunció estas palabras, los demás Amigos del rey que eran hostiles a Judas, se apresuraron a incitar aún más a Demetrio.
12 The king immediately chose Nicanor, who had been in command of the elephants, and appointed him governor of Judea. He sent him off	12 Este designó inmediatamente a Nicanor, que dirigía la tropa de los elefantes, lo nombró gobernador de Judea, y lo envió

14 The Gentiles from Judea, who would have banished Judas, came flocking to Nicanor, thinking that the misfortunes and calamities of the Jews would mean prosperity for themselves.	14 Los paganos que habían huido de Judea por temor a Judas, se unieron en masa a Nicanor, pensando que los infortunios y las derrotas de los judíos serían sus propias victorias.
15 When the Jews heard of Nicanor's coming, and that the Gentiles were rallying to him, they sprinkled themselves with earth and prayed to him who established his people forever, and who always comes to the aid of his heritage.	15 Cuando los judíos se enteraron de la expedición de Nicanor y de la invasión de los paganos, se cubrieron de polvo y suplicaron a Aquel que había establecido a su pueblo para siempre y nunca dejaba de proteger a su propia herencia en forma bien visible.
16 At their leader's command, they set out at once and came upon the enemy at the village of Adasa.	16 Bajo la orden de su jefe, partieron inmediatamente de allí y se trabaron en lucha con ellos junto al poblado de Desau.
17 Judas' brother Simon had engaged Nicanor, but because of the sudden appearance of the enemy suffered a slight repulse.	17 Simón, el hermano de Judas, había entrado en combate con Nicanor, pero sufrió un ligero revés a causa del ataque sorpresivo de los enemigos.
18 However, when Nicanor heard of the valor of Judas and his men, and the great courage with which they fought for their country, he shrank from deciding the issue by bloodshed.	18 Nicanor, enterado de la audacia de los hombres de Judas y del valor con que defendían a su patria, temió definir la situación de una manera sangrienta.
19 So he sent Posidonius, Theodotus and Mattathias to arrange an agreement.	19 Por eso envió a Posidonio, Teodoto y Matatías para concertar la paz.
20 After a long discussion of the terms, each leader communicated them to his troops; and when general agreement was expressed, they assented to the treaty.	20 Después de un detenido examen de la propuesta, el jefe la comunicó a las tropas, y por decisión unánime aceptaron el tratado.
21 A day was set on which the leaders would meet by themselves. From each side a chariot came forward and thrones were set in place.	21 Se fijó un día en que los jefes se reunirían a solas en un lugar determinado; se puso una tarima de cada lado y se prepararon asientos.
22 Judas had posted armed men in readiness at suitable points for fear that the enemy might suddenly carry out some treacherous plan. But the conference was held in the proper way.	22 Judas distribuyó algunos hombres armados en puntos estratégicos, por si se producía inesperadamente algún ataque a traición por parte de los enemigos. Sin embargo, la entrevista se realizó normalmente.
23 Nicanor stayed on in Jerusalem, where he did nothing out of place. He got rid of the throngs of ordinary people who gathered around him;	23 Nicanor vivía en Jerusalén sin molestar a nadie: incluso, licenció a las tropas que se le habían incorporado en masa.
24 but he always kept Judas in his company, for he had a cordial affection for the man.	24 Se veía constantemente, con Judas y sentía por él un sincero aprecio;
25 He urged him to marry and have children; so Judas married, settled down, and shared the common life.	25 le aconsejó que se casara y que tuviera hijos. Judas se casó y vivió tranquilamente, disfrutando de la vida.
26 When Alcimus saw their friendship for each other, he took the treaty that had been made, went to Demetrius, and said that Nicanor was plotting against the state, and that he had appointed Judas, the conspirator against the kingdom, to be his successor.	26 Cuando Alcimo vio la comprensión que reinaba entre ellos, consiguió una copia del pacto celebrado y se presentó ante Demetrio, diciéndole que Nicanor abrigaba sentimientos contrarios a los intereses del Estado, ya que había nombrado lugarteniente suyo a Judas, el rival de su reino.
27 Stirred up by the villain's calumnies, the king became enraged. He wrote to Nicanor, stating that he was displeased with the treaty, and ordering him to send Maccabeus as a prisoner to Antioch without delay.	27 El rey se puso fuera de sí y, excitado por las calumnias de ese miserable, escribió a Nicanor, manifestándole su disgusto por el acuerdo y ordenándole que le mandara inmediatamente preso a Antioquía al Macabeo.
28 When this message reached Nicanor he was dismayed, for he hated to break his agreement with a man who had done no wrong.	28 Cuando Nicanor recibió la noticia, quedó desconcertado, porque le indignaba romper el acuerdo sin que aquel hombre hubiera cometido ninguna injusticia.
29 However, there was no way of opposing the king, so he watched for an opportunity to carry out this order by a stratagem.	29 Pero como no era posible oponerse al rey, buscaba la ocasión favorable para cumplir la orden valiéndose de alguna estratagema.
30 But Maccabeus noticed that Nicanor was becoming cool in his dealings with him, and acting with unaccustomed rudeness when they met; he concluded that this coldness betokened no good. So he gathered together a large number of his men, and went into hiding from Nicanor.	30 El Macabeo, por su parte, viendo que Nicanor lo trataba más secamente y que le demostraba una gran frialdad en sus relaciones habituales, pensó que esa actitud no presagiaba nada bueno. Entonces reunió a un buen número de sus compañeros y se ocultó de Nicanor.
31 When Nicanor realized that he had been disgracefully outwitted by the man, he went to the great and holy temple, at a time when the priests were offering the customary sacrifices, and ordered them to surrender Judas.	31 Cuando este advirtió que Judas se había burlado de él tan hábilmente, se presentó en el augusto y santo Templo, mientras los sacerdotes ofrecían los sacrificios rituales y les exigió que le entregaran a aquel hombre.
32 As they declared under oath that they did not know where the wanted man was,	32 Como ellos juraron que no sabían dónde se encontraba el hombre que buscaba,
33 he raised his right hand toward the temple and swore this oath: "If you do not hand Judas over to me as prisoner, I will level this shrine of God to the ground; I will tear down the altar, and erect here a splendid temple to Dionysus."	33 él, extendiendo la mano derecha hacia el Santuario, pronunció este juramento: «Si no me entregan prisionero a Judas, arrasaré este recinto consagrado a Dios, derribaré el altar y levantaré aquí mismo un espléndido templo a Dionisos».
34 With these words he went away. The priests stretched out their hands toward heaven, calling upon the unfailing defender of our nation in these words:	34 Dicho esto, se fue. Los sacerdotes, con las manos extendidas hacia el cielo, invocaron a Aquel que había combatido incesantemente en favor de nuestra nación, diciendo:
35 "Lord of all, though you are in need of nothing, you have approved of a temple for your dwelling place among us.	35 «Tú, Señor de todas las cosas, que no necesitas de nada, has querido que el Santuario donde tú habitas estuviera en medio de nosotros.
36 Therefore, O holy One, Lord of all holiness, preserve forever undefiled this house, which has been so recently purified."	36 Por eso ahora, Señor santo, lleno de toda santidad, preserva para siempre de toda profanación esta Casa recién purificada».
37 A certain Razis, one of the elders of Jerusalem, was denounced to Nicanor as a patriot. A man highly regarded, he was called a father of the Jews because of his love for them.	37 Un tal Razís, uno de los ancianos de Jerusalén, buen patriota, sumamente estimado y llamado por su bondad «Padre de los judíos», fue denunciado a Nicanor.
38 In the early days of the revolt, he had been convicted of Judaism, and had risked body and life in his ardent zeal for it.	38 El, en los primeros tiempos de la ruptura con el paganismo, había abrazado la causa del Judaísmo, entregándose a ella en cuerpo y alma, con una gran entereza.
39 Nicanor, to show his detestation of the Jews, sent more than five hundred soldiers to arrest him.	39 Nicanor, queriendo poner en evidencia la hostilidad que profesaba contra los judíos, envió más de quinientos soldados para detenerlo,
40 He thought that by arresting such a man he would deal the Jews a hard blow.	40 porque le parecía que, tomándolo prisionero, ocasionaba un gran perjuicio a los judíos.
41 But when these troops, on the point of capturing the tower, were forcing the outer gate and calling for fire to set the door ablaze, Razis, now caught on all sides, turned his sword against himself,	41 Cuando las tropas estaban a punto de ocupar la torre, forzando la puerta de entrada y dando órdenes de traer fuego e incendiar las puertas. Razís, acorralado por todas partes, se arrojó sobre su espada.
42 preferring to die nobly rather than fall into the hands of vile men and suffer outrages unworthy of his noble birth.	42 El prefirió morir noblemente, antes que caer en manos de aquellos desalmados y soportar ultrajes indignos de su nobleza.
43 In the excitement of the struggle he failed to strike exactly. So while the troops rushed in through the doors, he gallantly ran up to the top of the wall and with manly courage threw himself down into the crowd.	43 Pero, por lo precipitado del ataque, no acertó el golpe, y como las tropas ya se abrían paso a través de las puertas, subió valerosamente a lo alto del muro y se arrojó con intrepidez sobre la multitud.
44 But as they quickly drew back and left an opening, he fell into the middle of the empty space.	44 Esta retrocedió a una cierta distancia y él cayó en medio del espacio vacío.
45 Still breathing, and inflamed with anger, he got up and ran through the crowd, with blood gushing from his frightful wounds.	45 Estando aún con vida, lleno de ardor, se incorporó sangrando copiosamente, y a pesar de sus graves heridas, pasó corriendo por entre las tropas y se paró sobre una roca escarpada.
46 Then, standing on a steep rock, as he lost the last of his blood, he tore out his entrails and flung them with both hands into the crowd, calling upon the Lord of life and of spirit to give these back to him again. Such was the manner of his death.	46 Cuando ya estaba completamente exangüe, se arrancó las entrañas y, tomándolas con ambas manos, las arrojó contra aquella gente. Así, invocando al Señor de la vida y del espíritu para que un día se las devolviera, murió aquel hombre.
