1 Three years later, Judas and his men learned that Demetrius, son of Seleucus, had sailed into the port of Tripolis with a powerful army and a fleet,	1 Después de tres años de intervalo, los hombres de Judas supieron que Demetrio, hijo de Seleuco, había atracado en el puerto de Trípoli con un fuerte ejército y una flota,

3 A certain Alcimus, a former high priest, who had willfully incurred defilement at the time of the revolt, realized that there was no way for him to salvage his position and regain access to the holy altar.	3 Un tal Alcimo, que antes había sido sumo sacerdote, pero que se había contaminado voluntariamente en tiempo de la rebelión, pensando que de ninguna forma había para él salvación ni acceso posible al altar sagrado,
4 So he went to King Demetrius in the year one hundred and fifty-one and presented him with a gold crown and a palm branch, as well as some of the customary olive branches from the temple. On that occasion he kept quiet.	4 fue al encuentro del rey Demetrio, hacia el año 151, y le ofreció una corona de oro, una palma, y además, los rituales ramos de olivo del Templo. 5 But he found an opportunity to further his mad scheme when he was invited to the council by Demetrius and questioned about the dispositions and intentions of the Jews. He replied:	5 Pero encontró una ocasión propicia para su demencia, al ser llamado por Demetrio a consejo y al ser preguntado sobre las disposiciones y designios de los judíos.
6 "Those Jews called Hasideans, led by Judas Maccabeus, are warmongers, who stir up sedition and keep the kingdom from enjoying peace and quiet.	6 Respondió: «Los judíos llamados asideos, encabezados por Judas Macabeo, fomentan guerras y rebeliones, para no dejar que el reino viva en paz.
7 For this reason, now that I am deprived of my ancestral dignity, that is to say, the high priesthood, I have come here--	7 Por eso aunque despojado de mi dignidad ancestral, me refiero al sumo sacerdocio, he venido aquí
8 first, out of my genuine concern for the king's interests, and secondly, out of consideration for my own countrymen, since our entire nation is suffering great affliction from the unreasonable conduct of the people just mentioned.	8 en primer lugar con verdadera preocupación por los intereses del rey, y en segundo lugar, con la mirada puesta en mis propios compatriotas, pues por la locura de los hombres que he mencionado, toda nuestra raza padece no pocos males.
9 When you have informed yourself in detail on these matters, O king, act in the interest of our country and its hard-pressed people with the same gracious consideration that you show toward all.	9 Informado con detalle de todo esto, ¡oh rey!, mira por nuestro país y por nuestra nación por todas partes asediada, con esa accesible benevolencia que tienes para todos;
10 As long as Judas is around, it is impossible for the state to enjoy peace."	10 pues mientras Judas subsista, le es imposible al Estado alcanzar la paz».
11 When he had said this, the other Friends who were hostile to Judas quickly added fuel to Demetrius' indignation.	11 En cuanto él dijo esto, los demás amigos que sentían aversión hacia lo de Judas, se apresuraron a encender más el ánimo de Demetrio.
12 The king immediately chose Nicanor, who had been in command of the elephants, and appointed him governor of Judea. He sent him off	12 Designó inmediatamente a Nicanor, que había llegado a ser elefantarca, le nombró estratega de Judea y le envió
13 with orders to put Judas to death, to disperse his followers, and to set up Alcimus as high priest of the great temple.	13 con órdenes de hacer morir a Judas, dispersar a todos sus hombres y restablecer a Alcimo como sumo sacerdote del más grande de los templos.
14 The Gentiles from Judea, who would have banished Judas, came flocking to Nicanor, thinking that the misfortunes and calamities of the Jews would mean prosperity for themselves.	14 Los gentiles de Judea, fugitivos de Judas, se unieron en masa a Nicanor, imaginándose que las desgracias y reveses de los judíos serían sus propios éxitos.
15 When the Jews heard of Nicanor's coming, and that the Gentiles were rallying to him, they sprinkled themselves with earth and prayed to him who established his people forever, and who always comes to the aid of his heritage.	15 Al tener noticia de la expedición de Nicanor y del asalto de los gentiles, esparcieron sobre sí polvo e imploraron a Aquél que por siempre había establecido a su pueblo y que siempre protegía a su propia heredad con sus manifestaciones.
16 At their leader's command, they set out at once and came upon the enemy at the village of Adasa.	16 Por orden de su jefe, salieron inmediatamente de allí y trabaron lucha con ellos junto al pueblo de Dessáu.
17 Judas' brother Simon had engaged Nicanor, but because of the sudden appearance of the enemy suffered a slight repulse.	17 Simón, hermano de Judas, había entablado combate con Nicanor, pero, a causa de la repentina llegada de los enemigos, sufrió un ligero revés.
18 However, when Nicanor heard of the valor of Judas and his men, and the great courage with which they fought for their country, he shrank from deciding the issue by bloodshed.	18 Pero con todo, Nicanor, al tener noticia de la bravura de los hombres de Judas y del valor con que combatían por su patria, temía resolver la situación por la sangre.
19 So he sent Posidonius, Theodotus and Mattathias to arrange an agreement.	19 Por este motivo envió a Posidonio, Teodoto y Matatías para concertar la paz.
20 After a long discussion of the terms, each leader communicated them to his troops; and when general agreement was expressed, they assented to the treaty.	20 Después de maduro examen de las condiciones, el jefe se las comunicó a las tropas y, ante el parecer unánime, aceptaron el tratado.
21 A day was set on which the leaders would meet by themselves. From each side a chariot came forward and thrones were set in place.	21 Fijaron la fecha en que se reunirían los jefes en privado. Se adelantó un vehículo de cada lado y prepararon asientos.
22 Judas had posted armed men in readiness at suitable points for fear that the enemy might suddenly carry out some treacherous plan. But the conference was held in the proper way.	22 Judas dispuso en lugares estratégicos hombres armados, preparados para el caso de que se produjera alguna repentina traición de parte enemiga. Tuvieron la entrevista en buen acuerdo.
23 Nicanor stayed on in Jerusalem, where he did nothing out of place. He got rid of the throngs of ordinary people who gathered around him;	23 Nicanor pasó algún tiempo en Jerusalén sin hacer nada inoportuno y despidió a las turbas que, en masa, se le habían reunido.
24 but he always kept Judas in his company, for he had a cordial affection for the man.	24 Siempre tenía a Judas consigo; sentía una cordial inclinación hacia este hombre.
25 He urged him to marry and have children; so Judas married, settled down, and shared the common life.	25 Le aconsejó que se casara y tuviera descendencia. Judas se casó, vivió con tranquilidad, y disfrutó de la vida.
26 When Alcimus saw their friendship for each other, he took the treaty that had been made, went to Demetrius, and said that Nicanor was plotting against the state, and that he had appointed Judas, the conspirator against the kingdom, to be his successor.	26 Alcimo, al ver la recíproca comprensión, se hizo con una copia del acuerdo concluido y se fue donde Demetrio. Le decía que Nicanor tenía sentimientos contrarios a los intereses del Estado, pues había designado como sucesor suyo a Judas, el conspirador contra el reino.
27 Stirred up by the villain's calumnies, the king became enraged. He wrote to Nicanor, stating that he was displeased with the treaty, and ordering him to send Maccabeus as a prisoner to Antioch without delay.	27 Fuera de sí el rey, excitado por las calumnias de aquel maligno, escribió a Nicanor comunicándole que estaba disgustado con el acuerdo y ordenándole que inmediatamente mandara encadenado a Macabeo a Antioquía.
28 When this message reached Nicanor he was dismayed, for he hated to break his agreement with a man who had done no wrong.	28 Cuando Nicanor recibió la comunicación, quedó consternado, pues le desagradaba mucho tener que anular lo convenido, sin que hubiera cometido aquel hombre injusticia alguna.
29 However, there was no way of opposing the king, so he watched for an opportunity to carry out this order by a stratagem.	29 Pero, como no era posible oponerse al rey, aguardaba la oportunidad de ejecutar la orden con alguna estratagema.
30 But Maccabeus noticed that Nicanor was becoming cool in his dealings with him, and acting with unaccustomed rudeness when they met; he concluded that this coldness betokened no good. So he gathered together a large number of his men, and went into hiding from Nicanor.	30 Cuando Macabeo, por su parte, notó que Nicanor se portaba más secamente con él y que le trataba con más frialdad en sus habituales relaciones, pensó que tal sequedad no procedía de las mejores disposiciones. Reunió a muchos de los suyos y procuró ocultarse de Nicanor.
31 When Nicanor realized that he had been disgracefully outwitted by the man, he went to the great and holy temple, at a time when the priests were offering the customary sacrifices, and ordered them to surrender Judas.	31 Este otro, al darse cuenta de que aquel hombre le había vencido con nobleza, se presentó en el más grande y santo Templo en el momento en que los sacerdotes ofrecían los sacrificios rituales y les exigió que le entregaran a aquel hombre.
32 As they declared under oath that they did not know where the wanted man was,	32 Aseguraron ellos con juramento que no sabían dónde estaba el hombre que buscaba.
33 he raised his right hand toward the temple and swore this oath: "If you do not hand Judas over to me as prisoner, I will level this shrine of God to the ground; I will tear down the altar, and erect here a splendid temple to Dionysus."	33 Entonces él extendiendo la diestra hacia el santuario, hizo este juramento: «Si no me entregáis encadenado a Judas, arrasaré este recinto sagrado de Dios, destruiré el altar, y aquí mismo levantaré un espléndido Templo a Dióniso».
34 With these words he went away. The priests stretched out their hands toward heaven, calling upon the unfailing defender of our nation in these words:	34 Y, dicho esto, se fue. Los sacerdotes con las manos tendidas al cielo, invocaban a Aquél que sin cesar había combatido en favor de nuestra nación, diciendo:
35 "Lord of all, though you are in need of nothing, you have approved of a temple for your dwelling place among us.	35 «Tú, Señor, que nada necesitas, te has complacido en que el santuario de tu morada se halle entre nosotros.
36 Therefore, O holy One, Lord of all holiness, preserve forever undefiled this house, which has been so recently purified."	36 También ahora, Señor santo de toda santidad, preserva siempre limpia de profanación esta Casa recién purificada».
37 A certain Razis, one of the elders of Jerusalem, was denounced to Nicanor as a patriot. A man highly regarded, he was called a father of the Jews because of his love for them.	37 Razías, uno de los ancianos de Jerusalén, fue denunciado a Nicanor. Era hombre amante de sus conciudadanos, muy bien considerado, llamado por su buen corazón «Padre de los judíos»,
38 In the early days of the revolt, he had been convicted of Judaism, and had risked body and life in his ardent zeal for it.	38 pues, en los tiempos que precedieron a la sublevación, había sido acusado de Judaísmo, y por el Judaísmo había expuesto cuerpo y vida con gran constancia.
39 Nicanor, to show his detestation of the Jews, sent more than five hundred soldiers to arrest him.	39 Queriendo Nicanor hacer patente la hostilidad que le embargaba hacia los judíos, envió más de quinientos soldados para arrestarlo,
40 He thought that by arresting such a man he would deal the Jews a hard blow.	40 pues le parecía que arrestándole causaba un gran perjuicio a los judíos.
41 But when these troops, on the point of capturing the tower, were forcing the outer gate and calling for fire to set the door ablaze, Razis, now caught on all sides, turned his sword against himself,	41 Cuando las tropas estaban a punto de apoderarse de la torre, forzando la puerta del patio y con orden de prender fuego e incendiar las puertas, Razías, acosado por todas partes, se echó sobre la espada.
42 preferring to die nobly rather than fall into the hands of vile men and suffer outrages unworthy of his noble birth.	42 Prefirió noblemente la muerte antes que caer en manos criminales y soportar afrentas indignas de su nobleza.
43 In the excitement of the struggle he failed to strike exactly. So while the troops rushed in through the doors, he gallantly ran up to the top of the wall and with manly courage threw himself down into the crowd.	43 Pero, como por la precipitación del combate no había acertado al herirse y las tropas irrumpían puertas adentro, subió valerosamente a lo alto del muro y se precipitó con bravura sobre las tropas;
44 But as they quickly drew back and left an opening, he fell into the middle of the empty space.	44 pero al retroceder éstas rápidamente, dejando un hueco, vino él a caer en medio del espacio libre.
45 Still breathing, and inflamed with anger, he got up and ran through the crowd, with blood gushing from his frightful wounds.	45 Con aliento todavía y enardecido su ánimo, se levantó derramando sangre a torrentes; a pesar de las graves heridas, atravesó corriendo por entre las tropas, y se puso sobre una roca escarpada.
46 Then, standing on a steep rock, as he lost the last of his blood, he tore out his entrails and flung them with both hands into the crowd, calling upon the Lord of life and of spirit to give these back to him again. Such was the manner of his death.	46 Ya completamente exangüe, se arrancó las entrañas y tomándolas con ambas manos, las arrojó contra las tropas. Y después de invocar al Dueño de la vida y del espíritu que otra vez se dignara devolvérselas, llegó de este modo al tránsito.
