1 After these agreements were made, Lysias returned to the king, and the Jews went about their farming.	1 Concluidas las negociaciones, Lisias volvió adonde estaba el rey, mientras los judíos se dedicaban a los trabajos del campo.
2 But some of the local governors, Timothy and Apollonius, son of Gennaeus, as also Hieronymus and Demophon, to say nothing of Nicanor, the commander of the Cyprians, would not allow them to live in peace.	2 Pero algunos de los gobernadores locales, Timoteo y Apolonio, hijo de Geneo, además de Jerónimo y Demofón, y también Nicanor, jefe de los chipriotas, no los dejaban vivir tranquilos ni disfrutar de la paz.
3 Some people of Joppa also committed this outrage: they invited the Jews who lived among them, together with their wives and children, to embark on boats which they had provided. There was no hint of enmity toward them;	3 Algunos habitantes de Jope, por su parte, perpetraron un enorme crimen. En efecto, invitaron a los judíos que vivían con ellos a subir con sus mujeres e hijos a unas embarcaciones que habían equipado, disimulando las malas intenciones que tenían contra ellos.
4 this was done by public vote of the city. When the Jews, not suspecting treachery and wishing to live on friendly terms, accepted the invitation, the people of Joppa took them out to sea and drowned at least two hundred of them.	4 Como se trataba de una decisión unánime de toda la ciudad, los judíos aceptaron la invitación, porque deseaban vivir en paz y no tenían ninguna sospecha. Pero una vez que estuvieron en alta mar, los tiraron al agua: así murieron alrededor de doscientos.
5 As soon as Judas heard of the barbarous deed perpetrated against his countrymen, he summoned his men;	5 Cuando Judas se enteró de la crueldad cometida contra los compatriotas, hizo saber a sus hombres lo que había pasado
6 and after calling upon God, the just judge, he marched against the murderers of his kinsmen. In a night attack he set the harbor on fire, burnt the boats, and put to the sword those who had taken refuge there.	6 y, después de invocar a Dios, el justo Juez, se dirigió contra los asesinos de sus hermanos; incendió el puerto durante la noche, prendió fuego a las embarcaciones e hizo perecer a los que se habían refugiado allí.
7 When the gates of the town were shut, he withdrew, intending to come back later and wipe out the entire population of Joppa.	7 Como las puertas de la ciudad estaban cerradas, se retiró con la intención de volver y exterminar por completo la población de Jope.
8 On hearing that the men of Jamnia planned to give like treatment to the Jews who lived among them,	8 Informado, entre tanto, de que los de Iamnia maquinaban hacer algo parecido con los judíos que vivían allí,
9 he attacked the Jamnian populace by night, setting fire to the harbor and the fleet, so that the glow of the flames was visible as far as Jerusalem, thirty miles away.	9 atacó también durante la noche a los iamnitas e incendió el puerto y la flota, de manera que el resplandor de las llamas se vio incluso en Jerusalén, a una distancia de casi cincuenta kilómetros.
10 When the Jews had gone about a mile from there in the campaign against Timothy, they were attacked by Arabs numbering at least five thousand foot soldiers, and five hundred horsemen.	10 Cuando estaba a dos kilómetros de allí, en una expedición contra Timoteo, lo atacaron unos árabes: eran no menos de cinco mil de a pie y quinientos jinetes.
11 After a hard fight, Judas and his companions, with God's help, were victorious. The defeated nomads begged Judas to make friends with them and promised to supply the Jews with cattle and to help them in every other way.	11 Se entabló una lucha encarnizada, y las tropas de Judas obtuvieron la victoria, gracias al auxilio de Dios. Los nómadas, derrotados, pidieron la paz a Judas, comprometiéndose a darles ganado y a ayudarlos en lo sucesivo.
12 Realizing that they could indeed be useful in many respects, Judas agreed to make peace with them. After the pledge of friendship had been exchanged, the Arabs withdrew to their tents.	12 Judas, comprendiendo que podrían prestarle muchos servicios, accedió a hacer la paz con ellos y, después de estrecharse la mano, los árabes regresaron a sus campamentos.
13 He also attacked a certain city called Caspin, fortified with earthworks and ramparts and inhabited by a mixed population of Gentiles.	13 Luego atacó a una ciudad fortificada con terraplenes, rodeada de murallas y habitada por gente de diversas nacionalidades, que se llamaba Caspín.
14 Relying on the strength of their walls and their supply of provisions, the besieged treated Judas and his men with contempt, insulting them and even uttering blasphemies and profanity.	14 Los sitiados, confiando en la solidez de las murallas y en la reserva de víveres, trataban despectivamente a los hombres de Judas, insultándolos y profiriendo blasfemias y maldiciones.
15 But Judas and his men invoked the aid of the great Sovereign of the world, who, in the day of Joshua, overthrew Jericho without battering-ram or siege machine; then they furiously stormed the ramparts.	15 Judas y sus compañeros –después de invocar al supremo Señor del universo que, sin arietes ni máquinas de guerra, derribó a Jericó en tiempos de Josué– asaltaron ferozmente la muralla.
16 Capturing the city by the will of God, they inflicted such indescribable slaughter on it that the adjacent pool, which was about a quarter of a mile wide, seemed to be filled with the blood that flowed into it.	16 Y apoderándose de la ciudad, por la voluntad de Dios, realizaron una matanza indescriptible, hasta tal punto que el lago vecino, de quince metros de ancho, parecía colmado con la sangre que lo había inundado.
17 When they had gone on some ninety miles, they reached Charax, where there were certain Jews known as Toubiani.	17 Luego se alejaron de allí ciento cincuenta kilómetros y llegaron a Járaca, donde vivían los judíos llamados tubienos.
18 But they did not find Timothy in that region, for he had already departed from there without having done anything except to leave behind in one place a very strong garrison.	18 Pero no encontraron a Timoteo por aquellas regiones, porque en vista de que no conseguía nada, se había retirado de allí, no sin antes dejar en cierto lugar una guarnición bastante fuerte.
19 But Dositheus and Sosipater, two of Maccabeus' captains, marched out and destroyed the force of more than ten thousand men that Timothy had left in the stronghold.	19 Dositeo y Sosípatro, capitanes de Macabeo, avanzaron contra la fortaleza y mataron a los hombres que Timoteo había dejado en ella: eran más de diez mil.
20 Meanwhile, Maccabeus divided his army into cohorts, with a commander over each cohort, and went in pursuit of Timothy, who had a force of a hundred and twenty thousand foot soldiers and twenty-five hundred horsemen.	20 Luego el Macabeo distribuyó su ejército en batallones; puso al frente a aquellos dos capitales y se dirigió contra Timoteo, que había reunido ciento veinte mil soldados y dos mil quinientos jinetes.
21 When Timothy learned of the approach of Judas, he sent on ahead of him the women and children, as well as the baggage, to a place called Karnion, which was hard to besiege and even hard to reach because of the difficult terrain of that region.	21 Al enterarse de que se acercaba Judas, Timoteo mandó que las mujeres y los niños, junto con el resto del equipaje, se adelantaran hasta la fortaleza llamada Carnión, que era inexpugnable y de difícil acceso, por lo accidentado del terreno.
22 But when Judas' first cohort appeared, the enemy was overwhelmed with fear and terror at the manifestation of the All-seeing. Scattering in every direction, they rushed away in such headlong flight that in many cases they wounded one another, pierced by the swords of their own men.	22 Apenas apareció el primer batallón de Judas, el pánico y el terror se apoderaron de los enemigos, porque se manifestó ante ellos Aquel que todo lo ve. Entonces huyeron en todas direcciones, de manera que muchas veces se herían unos a otros y se atravesaban entre ellos mismos con sus espadas.
23 Judas pressed the pursuit vigorously, putting the sinners to the sword and destroying as many as thirty thousand men.	23 Judas los perseguía implacablemente, acribillando a aquellos impíos, y así llegó a matar a unos treinta mil.
24 Timothy himself fell into the hands of the men under Dositheus and Sosipater; but with great cunning, he asked them to spare his life and let him go, because he had in his power the parents and relatives of many of them, and could make these suffer.	24 Timoteo, que cayó en manos de los hombres de Dositeo y Sosípatro, les pidió con mucha habilidad que lo dejaran en libertad, porque los padres y hermanos de muchos de ellos estaban en su poder y corrían el riesgo de ser ejecutados.
25 When he had fully confirmed his solemn pledge to restore them unharmed, they let him go for the sake of saving their brethren.	25 Cuando les aseguró con toda clase de argumentos que los devolvería sanos y salvos, lo pusieron en libertad, para salvar a sus hermanos.
26 Judas then marched to Karnion and the shrine of Atargatis, where he killed twenty-five thousand people.	26 Después, Judas marchó contra Carnión y contra el templo de Atargatis y mató a veinticinco mil personas.
27 After the defeat and destruction of these, he moved his army to Ephron, a fortified city inhabited by people of many nationalities. Robust young men took up their posts in defense of the walls, from which they fought valiantly; inside were large supplies of machines and missiles.	27 Una vez derrotados y destruidos estos enemigos, Judas emprendió una campaña contra la plaza fuerte de Efrón, donde se había establecido Lisias con gente de todas partes. Jóvenes vigorosos apostados delante de las murallas combatían con vigor, y en el interior había muchas reservas de máquinas de guerra y proyectiles.
28 But the Jews, invoking the Sovereign who forcibly shatters the might of his enemies, got possession of the city and slaughtered twenty-five thousand of the people in it.	28 Después de invocar al Soberano que aplasta con su poder las fuerzas de los enemigos, los judíos se apoderaron de la ciudad y mataron allí a unas veinticinco mil personas.
29 Then they set out from there and hastened on to Scythopolis, seventy-five miles from Jerusalem.	29 Partiendo de allí, avanzaron contra Escitópolis, que dista de Jerusalén unos ciento diez kilómetros.
30 But when the Jews who lived there testified to the good will shown by the Scythopolitans and to their kind treatment even in times of adversity,	30 Pero los judíos que vivían allí les atestiguaron que los habitantes de la ciudad los habían tratado con benevolencia y les habían brindado una buena acogida en momentos de adversidad.
31 Judas and his men thanked them and exhorted them to be well disposed to their race in the future also. Finally they arrived in Jerusalem, shortly before the feast of Weeks.	31 Entonces Judas y sus compañeros les dieron las gracias y los exhortaron a seguir siendo deferentes con sus compatriotas. Luego regresaron a Jerusalén, porque se acercaba la fiesta de las Semanas.
32 After this feast called Pentecost, they lost no time in marching against Gorgias, governor of Idumea,	32 Pasada la fiesta llamada de Pentecostés, se dirigieron contra Gorgias, gobernador de Idumea.
33 who opposed them with three thousand foot soldiers and four hundred horsemen.	33 Este salió a atacarlos con tres mil soldados y cuatrocientos jinetes,
34 In the ensuing battle, a few of the Jews were slain.	34 y cayeron en el combate algunos judíos.
35 A man called Dositheus, a powerful horseman and one of Bacenor's men, caught hold of Gorgias, grasped his military cloak and dragged him along by main strength, intending to capture the vile wretch alive, when a Thracian horseman attacked Dositheus and cut off his arm at the shoulder. Then Gorgias fled to Marisa.	35 Un tal Dositeo, valeroso jinete de las tropas de Bacenor, se apoderó de Gorgias y, tirándole de la capa, lo arrastraba con fuerza a fin de capturar vivo a aquel infame. Pero un jinete tracio se abalanzó sobre Dositeo y lo hirió por la espalda, y así Gorgias pudo huir hacia Marisa.
36 After Esdris and his men had been fighting for a long time and were weary, Judas called upon the Lord to show himself their ally and leader in the battle.	36 Como los hombres de Esdrín estaban extenuados por haber combatido durante mucho tiempo, Judas rogó al Señor que se manifestara como su aliado y su guía en el combate.
37 Then, raising a battle cry in his ancestral language, and with songs, he charged Gorgias' men when they were not expecting it and put them to flight.	37 Y entonando en la lengua de sus padres un himno de guerra, cayó sorpresivamente sobre los hombres de Gorgias y los derrotó.
38 Judas rallied his army and went to the city of Adullam. As the week was ending, they purified themselves according to custom and kept the sabbath there.	38 Luego Judas reunió al ejército y se dirigió hacia la ciudad de Odolam. Como estaba ya próximo el séptimo día de la semana, se purificaron con los ritos de costumbre y celebraron el sábado en aquel lugar.
39 On the following day, since the task had now become urgent, Judas and his men went to gather up the bodies of the slain and bury them with their kinsmen in their ancestral tombs.	39 Los hombres de Judas fueron al día siguiente –dado que el tiempo urgía– a recoger los cadáveres de los caídos para sepultarlos con sus parientes, en los sepulcros familiares.
40 But under the tunic of each of the dead they found amulets sacred to the idols of Jamnia, which the law forbids the Jews to wear. So it was clear to all that this was why these men had been slain.	40 Entonces encontraron debajo de las túnicas de cada uno de los muertos objetos consagrados a los ídolos de Iamnia, que la Ley prohíbe tener a los judíos. Así se puso en evidencia para todos que esa era la causa por la que habían caído.
41 They all therefore praised the ways of the Lord, the just judge who brings to light the things that are hidden.	41 Todos bendijeron el proceder del Señor, el justo Juez, que pone de manifiesto las cosas ocultas,
42 Turning to supplication, they prayed that the sinful deed might be fully blotted out. The noble Judas warned the soldiers to keep themselves free from sin, for they had seen with their own eyes what had happened because of the sin of those who had fallen.	42 e hicieron rogativas pidiendo que el pecado cometido quedara completamente borrado. El noble Judas exhortó a la multitud a que se abstuvieran del pecado, ya que ellos habían visto con sus propios ojos lo que había sucedido a los caídos en el combate a causa de su pecado.
43 He then took up a collection among all his soldiers, amounting to two thousand silver drachmas, which he sent to Jerusalem to provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view;	43 Y después de haber recolectado entre sus hombres unas dos mil dracmas, las envió a Jerusalén para que se ofreciera un sacrificio por el pecado. El realizó este hermoso y noble gesto con el pensamiento puesto en la resurrección,
44 for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death.	44 porque si no hubiera esperado que los caídos en la batalla iban a resucitar, habría sido inútil y superfluo orar por los difuntos.
45 But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought.	45 Además, él tenía presente la magnífica recompensa que está reservada a los que mueren piadosamente, y este es un pensamiento santo y piadoso. Por eso, mandó ofrecer el sacrificio de expiación por los muertos, para que fueran librados de sus pecados.
46 Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin.
