1 After these agreements were made, Lysias returned to the king, and the Jews went about their farming.	1 Una vez terminados estos tratados, Lisias se volvió junto al rey, mientras los judíos se entregaban a las labores del campo.
2 But some of the local governors, Timothy and Apollonius, son of Gennaeus, as also Hieronymus and Demophon, to say nothing of Nicanor, the commander of the Cyprians, would not allow them to live in peace.	2 Pero algunos de los estrategas en plaza, Timoteo y Apolonio, hijo de Genneo, y también Jerónimo y Demofón, además de Nicanor, el Chipriarca, no les dejaban vivir en paz ni disfrutar de sosiego.
3 Some people of Joppa also committed this outrage: they invited the Jews who lived among them, together with their wives and children, to embark on boats which they had provided. There was no hint of enmity toward them;	3 Los habitantes de Joppe, por su parte, perpetraron la enorme impiedad que sigue: invitaron a los judíos que vivían con ellos, a subir con mujeres y niños a las embarcaciones que habían preparado, como si no guardaran contra ellos ninguna enemistad.
4 this was done by public vote of the city. When the Jews, not suspecting treachery and wishing to live on friendly terms, accepted the invitation, the people of Joppa took them out to sea and drowned at least two hundred of them.	4 Conforme a la común decisión de la ciudad, aceptaron los judíos, por mostrar sus deseos de vivir en paz y que no tenían el menor recelo; pero, cuando se hallaban en alta mar, los echaron al fondo, en número no inferior a doscientos.
5 As soon as Judas heard of the barbarous deed perpetrated against his countrymen, he summoned his men;	5 Cuando Judas se enteró de la crueldad cometida con sus compatriotas, se lo anunció a sus hombres;
6 and after calling upon God, the just judge, he marched against the murderers of his kinsmen. In a night attack he set the harbor on fire, burnt the boats, and put to the sword those who had taken refuge there.	6 y después de invocar a Dios, el justo juez, se puso en camino contra los asesinos de sus hermanos, incendió por la noche el puerto, quemó las embarcaciones y pasó a cuchillo a los que se habían refugiado allí.
7 When the gates of the town were shut, he withdrew, intending to come back later and wipe out the entire population of Joppa.	7 Al encontrar cerrada la plaza, se retiró con la intención de volver de nuevo y exterminar por completo a la población de Joppe.
8 On hearing that the men of Jamnia planned to give like treatment to the Jews who lived among them,	8 Enterado de que también los de Yamnia querían actuar de la misma forma con los judíos que allí habitaban,
9 he attacked the Jamnian populace by night, setting fire to the harbor and the fleet, so that the glow of the flames was visible as far as Jerusalem, thirty miles away.	9 atacó también de noche a los yamnitas e incendió el puerto y la flota, de modo que el resplandor de las llamas se veía hasta en Jerusalén y eso que había 240 estadios de distancia.
10 When the Jews had gone about a mile from there in the campaign against Timothy, they were attacked by Arabs numbering at least five thousand foot soldiers, and five hundred horsemen.	10 Marchando contra Timoteo, se alejaron de allí nueve estadios, cuando le atacaron no menos de 5.000 árabes y quinientos jinetes.
11 After a hard fight, Judas and his companions, with God's help, were victorious. The defeated nomads begged Judas to make friends with them and promised to supply the Jews with cattle and to help them in every other way.	11 En la recia batalla trabada, las tropas de Judas lograron la victoria, gracias al auxilio recibido de Dios; los nómadas, vencidos, pidieron a Judas que les diera la mano, prometiendo entregarle ganado y serle útiles en adelante.
12 Realizing that they could indeed be useful in many respects, Judas agreed to make peace with them. After the pledge of friendship had been exchanged, the Arabs withdrew to their tents.	12 Judas, dándose cuenta de que verdaderamente en muchos casos podían ser de utilidad, consintió en hacer las paces con ellos; estrechada la mano se retiraron a las tiendas.
13 He also attacked a certain city called Caspin, fortified with earthworks and ramparts and inhabited by a mixed population of Gentiles.	13 Judas atacó también a cierta ciudad fortificada con terraplenes, rodeada de murallas, y habitada por una población mixta de varias naciones, por nombre Caspín.
14 Relying on the strength of their walls and their supply of provisions, the besieged treated Judas and his men with contempt, insulting them and even uttering blasphemies and profanity.	14 Los sitiados, confiados en la solidez de las murallas y en la provisión de víveres, trataban groseramente con insultos a los hombres de Judas, profiriendo además blasfemias y palabras sacrílegas.
15 But Judas and his men invoked the aid of the great Sovereign of the world, who, in the day of Joshua, overthrew Jericho without battering-ram or siege machine; then they furiously stormed the ramparts.	15 Los hombres de Judas, después de invocar al gran Señor del mundo, que sin arietes ni máquinas de guerra había derruido a Jericó en tiempo de Josué, atacaron ferozmente la muralla.
16 Capturing the city by the will of God, they inflicted such indescribable slaughter on it that the adjacent pool, which was about a quarter of a mile wide, seemed to be filled with the blood that flowed into it.	16 Una vez dueños de la ciudad por la voluntad de Dios, hicieron una indescriptible carnicería hasta el punto de que el lago vecino, con su anchura de dos estadios, parecía lleno con la sangre que le había llegado.
17 When they had gone on some ninety miles, they reached Charax, where there were certain Jews known as Toubiani.	17 Se alejaron de allí 750 estadios y llegaron a Járaca, donde los judíos llamados tubios.
18 But they did not find Timothy in that region, for he had already departed from there without having done anything except to leave behind in one place a very strong garrison.	18 Pero no encontraron en aquellos lugares a Timoteo, que al no lograr nada se había ido de allí, dejando con todo en determinado lugar una fortísima guarnición.
19 But Dositheus and Sosipater, two of Maccabeus' captains, marched out and destroyed the force of more than ten thousand men that Timothy had left in the stronghold.	19 Dositeo y Sosípatro, capitanes de Macabeo, en una incursión mataron a los hombres que Timoteo había dejado en la fortaleza, más de 10.000.
20 Meanwhile, Maccabeus divided his army into cohorts, with a commander over each cohort, and went in pursuit of Timothy, who had a force of a hundred and twenty thousand foot soldiers and twenty-five hundred horsemen.	20 Macabeo distribuyó su ejército en cohortes, puso a aquellos dos a su cabeza y se lanzó contra Timoteo que tenía consigo 20.000 infantes y 2.500 jinetes.
21 When Timothy learned of the approach of Judas, he sent on ahead of him the women and children, as well as the baggage, to a place called Karnion, which was hard to besiege and even hard to reach because of the difficult terrain of that region.	21 Al enterarse Timoteo de la llegada de Judas, mandó por delante las mujeres, los niños y el resto de la impedimenta al sitio llamado Carnión; pues era un lugar inexpugnable y de acceso difícil, por la angostura de todos sus pasos.
22 But when Judas' first cohort appeared, the enemy was overwhelmed with fear and terror at the manifestation of the All-seeing. Scattering in every direction, they rushed away in such headlong flight that in many cases they wounded one another, pierced by the swords of their own men.	22 En cuanto apareció, la primera, la cohorte de Judas, se apoderó de los enemigos el miedo y el temor al manifestarse ente ellos Aquél que todo lo ve, y se dieron a la fuga cada cual por su lado, de modo que muchas veces eran heridos por sus propios compañeros y atravesados por las puntas de sus espadas.
23 Judas pressed the pursuit vigorously, putting the sinners to the sword and destroying as many as thirty thousand men.	23 Judas seguía tenazmente en su persecución, acuchillando a aquellos criminales; llegó a matar hasta 30.000 hombres.
24 Timothy himself fell into the hands of the men under Dositheus and Sosipater; but with great cunning, he asked them to spare his life and let him go, because he had in his power the parents and relatives of many of them, and could make these suffer.	24 El mismo Timoteo cayó en manos de los hombres de Dositeo y Sosípatro; les instaba con mucha palabrería que le dejaran ir salvo, pues alegaba tener en su poder a parientes entre los cuales había hermanos de muchos de ellos, de cuya vida nadie se cuidaría.
25 When he had fully confirmed his solemn pledge to restore them unharmed, they let him go for the sake of saving their brethren.	25 Cuando él garantizó, después de muchas palabras, la determinación de restituirlos sanos y salvos, le dejaron libre con ánimo de liberar a sus hermanos.
26 Judas then marched to Karnion and the shrine of Atargatis, where he killed twenty-five thousand people.	26 Habiéndose dirigido al Carnión y al Atargateion, Judas dio muerte a 25.000 hombres.
27 After the defeat and destruction of these, he moved his army to Ephron, a fortified city inhabited by people of many nationalities. Robust young men took up their posts in defense of the walls, from which they fought valiantly; inside were large supplies of machines and missiles.	27 Después de haber derrotado (y destruido) a estos enemigos, dirigió una expedición contra la ciudad fuerte de Efrón, donde habitaba Lisanias, con una multitud de toda estirpe. Jóvenes vigorosos, apostados ante las murallas, combatían con valor; en el interior había muchas reservas de máquinas de guerra y proyectiles.
28 But the Jews, invoking the Sovereign who forcibly shatters the might of his enemies, got possession of the city and slaughtered twenty-five thousand of the people in it.	28 Después de haber invocado al Señor que aplasta con energía las fuerzas de los enemigos, los judíos se apoderaron de la ciudad y abatieron por tierra a unos 25.000 de los que estaban dentro.
29 Then they set out from there and hastened on to Scythopolis, seventy-five miles from Jerusalem.	29 Partiendo de allí se lanzaron contra Escitópolis, ciudad que dista de Jerusalén sesenta estadios.
30 But when the Jews who lived there testified to the good will shown by the Scythopolitans and to their kind treatment even in times of adversity,	30 Pero como los judíos allí establecidos atestiguaron que los habitantes de la ciudad habían sido benévolos con ellos y les habían dado buena acogida en los tiempos de desgracia,
31 Judas and his men thanked them and exhorted them to be well disposed to their race in the future also. Finally they arrived in Jerusalem, shortly before the feast of Weeks.	31 Judas y los suyos se lo agradecieron y les exhortaron a que también en lo sucesivo se mostraran bien dispuestos con su raza. Llegaron a Jerusalén en la proximidad de la fiesta de las Semanas.
32 After this feast called Pentecost, they lost no time in marching against Gorgias, governor of Idumea,	32 Después de la fiesta llamada de Pentecostés, se lanzaron contra Gorgias, el estratega de Idumea.
33 who opposed them with three thousand foot soldiers and four hundred horsemen.	33 Salió éste con 3.000 infantes y cuatrocientos jinetes,
34 In the ensuing battle, a few of the Jews were slain.	34 y sucedió que cayeron algunos de los judíos que les habían presentado batalla.
35 A man called Dositheus, a powerful horseman and one of Bacenor's men, caught hold of Gorgias, grasped his military cloak and dragged him along by main strength, intending to capture the vile wretch alive, when a Thracian horseman attacked Dositheus and cut off his arm at the shoulder. Then Gorgias fled to Marisa.	35 Un tal Dositeo, jinete valiente, del cuerpo de los tubios, se apoderó de Gorgias, y agarrándole por la clámide, le arrastraba por la fuerza con el deseo de capturar vivo a aquel maldito; pero un jinete tracio se echó sobre Dositeo, le cortó el hombro, y Gorgias huyó hacia Marisá.
36 After Esdris and his men had been fighting for a long time and were weary, Judas called upon the Lord to show himself their ally and leader in the battle.	36 Ante la fatiga de los hombres de Esdrías que llevaban mucho tiempo luchando, Judas suplicó al Señor que se mostrase su aliado y su guía en el combate.
37 Then, raising a battle cry in his ancestral language, and with songs, he charged Gorgias' men when they were not expecting it and put them to flight.	37 Entonó entonces en su lengua patria el grito de guerra y algunos himnos, irrumpió de improviso sobre las tropas de Gorgias y las derrotó.
38 Judas rallied his army and went to the city of Adullam. As the week was ending, they purified themselves according to custom and kept the sabbath there.	38 Judas, después de reorganizar el ejército, se dirigió hacia la ciudad de Odolam. Al llegar el día séptimo, se purificaron según la costumbre y celebraron allí el sábado.
39 On the following day, since the task had now become urgent, Judas and his men went to gather up the bodies of the slain and bury them with their kinsmen in their ancestral tombs.	39 Al día siguiente, fueron en busca de Judas (cuando se hacía ya necesario), para recoger los cadáveres de los que habían caído y depositarlos con sus parientes en los sepulcros de sus padres.
40 But under the tunic of each of the dead they found amulets sacred to the idols of Jamnia, which the law forbids the Jews to wear. So it was clear to all that this was why these men had been slain.	40 Entonces encontraron bajo las túnicas de cada uno de los muertos objetos consagrados a los ídolos de Yamnia, que la Ley prohíbe a los judíos. Fue entonces evidente para todos por qué motivo habían sucumbido aquellos hombres.
41 They all therefore praised the ways of the Lord, the just judge who brings to light the things that are hidden.	41 Bendijeron, pues, todos las obras del Señor, juez justo, que manifiesta las cosas ocultas,
42 Turning to supplication, they prayed that the sinful deed might be fully blotted out. The noble Judas warned the soldiers to keep themselves free from sin, for they had seen with their own eyes what had happened because of the sin of those who had fallen.	42 y pasaron a la súplica, rogando que quedara completamente borrado el pecado cometido. El valeroso Judas recomendó a la multitud que se mantuvieran limpios de pecado, a la vista de lo sucedido por el pecado de los que habían sucumbido.
43 He then took up a collection among all his soldiers, amounting to two thousand silver drachmas, which he sent to Jerusalem to provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view;	43 Después de haber reunido entre sus hombres cerca de 2.000 dracmas, las mandó a Jerusalén para ofrecer un sacrificio por el pecado, obrando muy hermosa y noblemente, pensando en la resurrección.
44 for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death.	44 Pues de no esperar que los soldados caídos resucitarían, habría sido superfluo y necio rogar por los muertos;
45 But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought.	45 mas si consideraba que una magnífica recompensa está reservada a los que duermen piadosamente, era un pensamiento santo y piadoso.
46 Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin.	46 Por eso mandó hacer este sacrificio expiatorio en favor de los muertos, para que quedaran liberados del pecado.
