1 When Jonathan saw that the times favored him, he sent selected men to Rome to confirm and renew his friendship with the Romans.	1 Vedendo Gionata che le circostanze lo favorivano, scelse alcuni, e li mandò a Roma a confermare e rinnovare l’amicizia coi Romani.
2 He also sent letters to Sparta and other places for the same purpose.	2 Anche agli Spartani ed in altri luoghi mandò lettere allo stesso scopo.
3 After reaching Rome, the men entered the senate chamber and said, "The high priest Jonathan and the Jewish people have sent us to renew the earlier friendship and alliance between you and them."	3 Quelli dunque andarono a Roma, entrarono nella curia, e dissero: «Gionata sommo sacerdote, e la nazione giudea, cl hanno mandati per rinnovare con voi amicizia ed alleanza come per il passato ».
4 The Romans gave them letters addressed to the authorities in the various places, requesting them to provide the envoys with safe conduct to the land of Judah.	4 Ed i Romani dettero a loro delle lettere pel loro ministri di diversi luoghi, acciò li riconducessero in sicurtà nella terra di Giuda.
5 This is a copy of the letter that Jonathan wrote to the Spartans:	5 Ed ecco il testo della lettera scritta da Gionata agli Spartani:
6 "Jonathan the high priest, the senate of the nation, the priests, and the rest of the Jewish people send greetings to their brothers the Spartans.	6 « Gionata sommo sacerdote, i seniori della nazione, i sacerdoti, e tutto il popolo de' Giudei, agli Spartani fratelli, salute.
7 Long ago a letter was sent to the high priest Onias from Arius, who then reigned over you, stating that you are our brothers, as the attached copy shows.	7 Già prima, da Ario che era vostro re, fu mandata ad Onia sommo sacerdote una lettera, che diceva voi essere nostri fratelli, come si esprime il rescritto qui portato.
8 Onias welcomed the envoy with honor and received the letter, which clearly referred to alliance and friendship.	8 Ed Onia accolse con onore il personaggio inviato, ed accettò la lettera ove si parlava di alleanza ed amicizia.
9 Though we have no need of these things, since we have for our encouragement the sacred books that are in our possession,	9 Noi però, non avendo di ciò alcun bisogno, perchè abbiamo per nostro sostegno i libri santi che sono in mano nostra,
10 we have ventured to send word to you for the renewal of brotherhood and friendship, so as not to become strangers to you altogether; a long time has passed since your mission to us.	10 abbiamo tuttavia voluto mandare a rinnovare con voi la fraternità e l'amicizia, acciò non v'avessimo a divenir estranei; è infatti molto tempo da che mandaste a noi.
11 We, on our part, have never ceased to remember you in the sacrifices and prayers that we offer on our feasts and other appropriate days, as it is right and proper to remember brothers.	11 Noi dunque, in ogni occasione, senza mai tralasciarlo, nei giorni solenni, ed in quelli altri nel quali è di regola, ci ricordiamo di voi nei sacriflzil che offriamo, e nelle supplicazioni, com' è giusto e conveniente ricordarsi de' fratelli.
12 We likewise rejoice in your renown.	12 Godiamo dunque della vostra gloria.
13 But many hardships and wars have beset us, and the kings around us have attacked us.	13 Ma noi siamo stati stretti da molte tribolazioni e da molte guerre, ed assaliti dai re circonvicini. ’
14 We did not wish to be troublesome to you and to the rest of our allies and friends in these wars;	14 In queste guerre, però, non abbiamo voluto esser molesti a voi nè agli altri nostri alleati ed amici ;
15 with the help of Heaven for our support, we have been saved from our enemies, and they have been humbled.	15 avemmo infatti aiuto dal cielo, e noi siamo stati liberati, ed umiliati i nostri nemici.
16 So we have chosen Numenius, son of Antiochus, and Antipater, son of Jason, and we have sent them to the Romans to renew our former friendship and alliance with them.	16 Abbiamo dunque scelto Numenio figlio d'Antioco, ed Antipatro figlio di Giasone, e li abbiamo mandati al Romani, a rinnovar con loro l'amicizia e l'alleanza di prima ;
17 We have also ordered them to come to you and greet you, and to deliver to you our letter about the renewal of our brotherhood.	17 ed abbiamo loro dato ordine di venire anche a voi, a salutarvi, e presentarvi le nostre lettere di rinnovamento della nostra fraternità.
18 Therefore kindly send us an answer on this matter."	18 Ed ora farete bene rispondendoci in proposito ».
19 This is a copy of the letter that was sent to Onias:	19 Questo poi è il tenore della lettera mandata ad Onta:
20 "Arius, king of the Spartans, sends greetings to Onias the high priest.	20 « Ario re degli Spartani, ad Onla gran sacerdote, salute.
21 A document has been found stating that the Spartans and the Jews are brothers; both nations descended from Abraham.	21 Degli Spartani e de' Giudei, s’è trovato in un certo scritto che sono fratelli, e che vengono dalla stirpe d'Abramo.
22 Now that we have learned this, kindly write to us about your welfare.	22 Ed ora, avendo noi scoperto questa cosa, farete bene a scriverci della vostra prosperità,
23 We, on our part, are informing you that your cattle and your possessions are ours, and ours are yours. We have, therefore, given orders that you should be told of this."	23 come anche noi abbiamo scritto a voi. Il nostro bestiame ed i nostri possedimenti son vostri, ed i vostri son nostri. Abbiamo dunque mandato a parteciparvi queste cose ».
24 Jonathan heard that the generals of Demetrius had returned to attack him with a stronger army than before.	24 Di poi Gionata seppe che i generali di Demetrio eran tornati con un esercito più grande di prima, per combatter con lui.
25 He set out from Jerusalem and went into the country of Hamath to meet them, giving them no time to enter his province.	25 Uscì di Gerusalemme, ed andò incontro a loro nella terra di Amat, non volendo dar loro tempo d’entrar nella terra sua.
26 The spies he had sent into their camp came back and reported that the enemy had made ready to attack the Jews that very night.	26 E mandò esploratori sul loro campo, i quali tornarono a riferire che quelli avevano stabilito d’attaccarll all’ improvviso, la notte.
27 Therefore, when the sun set, Jonathan ordered his men to be on guard and to remain armed, ready for combat, throughout the night. He also set outposts all around the camp.	27 Quando dunque il sole fu tramontato, Gionata ordinò ai suoi di vegliare, e star in armi preparati a battaglia per tutta la notte; e mise delle guardie tutt’ intorno all’accampamento.
28 When the enemy heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, their hearts sank with fear and dread. They lighted fires and then withdrew.	28 Ed i nemici seppero che Gionata co’ suoi stava pronto a battaglia, ed ebber timore, e si persero d'animo; accesero dei fuochi ne’ loro accampamenti [e si ritirarono].
29 But because Jonathan and his men were watching the lights burning, they did not know what had happened until morning.	29 Gionata ed i suoi non se n’avvidero sino alle mattina, vedendo risplendere i fuochi.
30 Then Jonathan pursued them, but he could not overtake them, for they had crossed the river Eleutherus.	30 Allora Gionata li Inseguì; ma non li raggiunse, perchè avevan passato il fiume Eleutero.
31 So Jonathan turned aside against the Arabs who are called Zabadeans, overwhelming and plundering them.	31 Poi, deviò Gionata versogli Arabi chiamati Zabadel, li sconfisse, e ne prese le spoglie.
32 Then he marched on to Damascus and traversed that whole region.	32 Di lì mosse, e venne a Damasco, e percorreva tutta quella regione.
33 Simon also set out and went as far as Ashkalon and its neighboring strongholds. He then turned to Joppa and occupied it,	33 Simone pure si mosse, e venne sino ad Ascalon ed alle fortezze vicine; poi si diresse ad Joppe, e l’occupò;
34 for he heard that its men had intended to hand over this stronghold to the supporters of Demetrius. He left a garrison there to guard it.	34 aver infatti saputo che quelli volevan consegnare la piazza a Demetrio, e vi collocò una guarnigione che la custodisse.
35 When Jonathan returned, he assembled the elders of the people, and with them he made plans for building strongholds in Judea,	35 Tornato che fu Gionata, convocò i seniori del popolo, e pensò con loro di edificar fortezze in Giudea,
36 for making the walls of Jerusalem still higher, and for erecting a high barrier between the citadel and the city, that would isolate the citadel and so prevent its garrison from commerce with the city.	36 alzar muri in Gerusalemme, ed uno di grande altezza fra la cittadella e la città, per separar quella da questa, acciò rimanesse isolata, e [quei di dentro] non potessero comprare nè vendere.
37 The people therefore worked together on building up the city, for part of the east wall above the ravine had collapsed. The quarter called Chaphenatha was also repaired.	37 Si trovaron dunque d’accordo per riedificar la città; e cadde il muro posto sopra il torrente, a levante; e Gionata ricostruì quello chiamato Cafeteta.
38 Simon likewise built up Adida in the Shephelah, and strengthened its fortifications by providing them with gates and bars.	38 Simone poi edificò Adiada in Sefela, e la fortificò, e vi mise le porte ed i serramenti.
39 Trypho was determined to become king of Asia, assume the crown, and do away with King Antiochus.	39 Ma Trifone pensava di farsi re dell’Asia, prender la corona, e disfarsi dei re Antioco.
40 But he was afraid that Jonathan would not permit him, but would fight against him. Looking for a way to seize and kill him, he set out and reached Beth-shan.	40 Temendo però che Gionata non glielo permettesse ma prendesse le armi contro di lui, cercava d'averlo nelle mani ed ucciderlo. Si mosse dunque, ed andò In Betsan.
41 Jonathan marched out against him with forty thousand picked fighting men and came to Beth-shan.	41 Allora Gionata gli uscì incontro con quarantamila soldati scelti, e venne a Betsan.
42 But when Trypho saw that Jonathan had arrived with a large army he was afraid to offer him violence.	42 Quando Trifone vide che Gionata era venuto con esercito grande per attaccarlo, ebbe paura.
43 Instead, he received him with honor, introduced him to all his friends, and gave him presents. He also ordered his friends and soldiers to obey him as they would himself.	43 Lo ricevè con onore, lo raccomandò a tutt’i suoi amici, gli fece regali, e dette ordine a’ suol soldati che gli obbedissero come a lui medesimo.
44 Then he said to Jonathan: "Why have you put all your soldiers to so much trouble when we are not at war?	44 E disse a Gionata: « Perchè hai tu disturbato tutto il tuo popolo, mentre non v'è guerra fra noi?
45 Pick out a few men to stay with you, send the rest back home, and then come with me to Ptolemais. I will hand it over to you together with other strongholds and their garrisons, as well as the officials, then I will leave and go home. That is why I came here."	45 Rimandali alle loro case, scegliti pochi uomini per scorta, e vieni con me in Tolemaide; io te la darò, con le rimanenti piazze forti e l’esercito e tutti gli addetti al governo; poi tornerò indietro e me n'andrò; chè solo per questo sono venuto ».
46 Jonathan believed him and did as he said. He dismissed his troops, and they returned to the land of Judah.	46 Gionata gli credè; fece come gli aveva detto, e congedò l'esercito che se ne tornò nella terra di Giuda.
47 But he kept with him three thousand men, of whom he sent two thousand to Galilee while one thousand accompanied him.	47 Ritenne con sè tremila uomini, de’ quali poi rimandò duemila In Galilea; gli altri mille andaron con lui.
48 Then as soon as Jonathan had entered Ptolemais, the men of the city closed the gates and seized him; all who had entered with him, they killed with the sword.	48 Or quando Gionata fu entrato In Tolemaide, i cittadini chiusero le porte, e lo fecero prigioniero, ed uccisero di spada tutti quelli ch’eran entrati con lui.
49 Trypho sent soldiers and cavalry to Galilee and the Great Plain to destroy all Jonathan's men.	49 Poi Trifone mandò l’esercito e la cavalleria In Galilea e nella gran pianura, a sterminare tutti i compagni di Gionata.
50 These, upon learning that Jonathan had been captured and his companions killed, encouraged one another and went out in compact body ready to fight.	50 Ma questi, quando seppero che Gionata era stato catturato ed ucciso con tutti quelli che eran con lui, s’incoraggiarono l’un l’altro, e si misero in ordine di battaglia.
51 As their pursuers saw that they were ready to fight for their lives, they turned back.	51 Or quelli che li avevano inseguiti, vedendo che questi giocavan la vita, tornaron indietro.
52 Thus all these men of Jonathan came safely into the land of Judah. They mourned over Jonathan and his men, and were in great fear, and all Israel fell into deep mourning.	52 Ed essi giunsero tutti senza ostacolo nella terra di Giuda. E piansero molto Gionata e quelli ch’eran stati con lui: pianse di gran pianto Israele.
53 All the nations round about sought to destroy them. They said, "Now that they have no leader to help them, let us make war on them and wipe out their memory from among men."	53 Allora tutte le genti circonvicine pensavano di schiacciarli, dicendo:
	54 «Non hanno un capo, nè chi li aiuti. Ora dunque distruggiamoli, e disperdiamo di fra gli uomini la loro memoria »
