NEW AMERICAN BIBLEGREEK BIBLE
In the year one hundred and sixty, Alexander, who was called Epiphanes, son of Antiochus, came up and took Ptolemais. He was accepted and began to reign there.1 και εν ετει εξηκοστω και εκατοστω ανεβη αλεξανδρος ο του αντιοχου ο επιφανης και κατελαβετο πτολεμαιδα και επεδεξαντο αυτον και εβασιλευσεν εκει
When King Demetrius heard of it, he mustered a very large army and marched out to engage him in combat.2 και ηκουσεν δημητριος ο βασιλευς και συνηγαγεν δυναμεις πολλας σφοδρα και εξηλθεν εις συναντησιν αυτω εις πολεμον
Demetrius sent a letter to Jonathan written in peaceful terms, to pay him honor;3 και απεστειλεν δημητριος προς ιωναθαν επιστολας λογοις ειρηνικοις ωστε μεγαλυναι αυτον
for he said: "Let us be the first to make peace with him, before he makes peace with Alexander against us,4 ειπεν γαρ προφθασωμεν του ειρηνην θειναι μετ' αυτων πριν η θειναι αυτον μετα αλεξανδρου καθ' ημων
since he will remember all the wrongs we have done to him, his brothers, and his nation."5 μνησθησεται γαρ παντων των κακων ων συνετελεσαμεν προς αυτον και εις τους αδελφους αυτου και εις το εθνος
So Demetrius authorized him to gather an army and procure arms as his ally; and he ordered that the hostages in the citadel be released to him.6 και εδωκεν αυτω εξουσιαν συναγαγειν δυναμεις και κατασκευαζειν οπλα και ειναι αυτον συμμαχον αυτου και τα ομηρα τα εν τη ακρα ειπεν παραδουναι αυτω
Accordingly Jonathan went up to Jerusalem and read the letter to all the people. The men in the citadel7 και ηλθεν ιωναθαν εις ιερουσαλημ και ανεγνω τας επιστολας εις τα ωτα παντος του λαου και των εκ της ακρας
were struck with fear when they heard that the king had given him authority to gather an army.8 και εφοβηθησαν φοβον μεγαν οτε ηκουσαν οτι εδωκεν αυτω ο βασιλευς εξουσιαν συναγαγειν δυναμιν
They released the hostages to Jonathan, and he gave them back to their parents.9 και παρεδωκαν οι εκ της ακρας ιωναθαν τα ομηρα και απεδωκεν αυτους τοις γονευσιν αυτων
Thereafter Jonathan dwelt in Jerusalem, and began to build and restore the city.10 και ωκησεν ιωναθαν εν ιερουσαλημ και ηρξατο οικοδομειν και καινιζειν την πολιν
He ordered the workmen to build the walls and encircle Mount Zion with square stones for its fortification, which they did.11 και ειπεν προς τους ποιουντας τα εργα οικοδομειν τα τειχη και το ορος σιων κυκλοθεν εκ λιθων τετραποδων εις οχυρωσιν και εποιησαν ουτως
The foreigners in the strongholds that Bacchides had built, took flight;12 και εφυγον οι αλλογενεις οι οντες εν τοις οχυρωμασιν οις ωκοδομησεν βακχιδης
each one of them left his place and returned to his own country.13 και κατελιπεν εκαστος τον τοπον αυτου και απηλθεν εις την γην αυτου
Only in Beth-zur did some remain of those who had abandoned the law and the commandments, for they used it as a place of refuge.14 πλην εν βαιθσουροις υπελειφθησαν τινες των καταλιποντων τον νομον και τα προσταγματα ην γαρ εις φυγαδευτηριον
King Alexander heard of the promises that Demetrius had made to Jonathan; he was also told of the battles and valiant deeds of Jonathan and his brothers and the troubles that they had endured.15 και ηκουσεν αλεξανδρος ο βασιλευς τας επαγγελιας οσας απεστειλεν δημητριος τω ιωναθαν και διηγησαντο αυτω τους πολεμους και τας ανδραγαθιας ας εποιησεν αυτος και οι αδελφοι αυτου και τους κοπους ους εσχον
He said, "Shall we ever find another man like him? Let us now make him our friend and ally."16 και ειπεν μη ευρησομεν ανδρα τοιουτον ενα και νυν ποιησομεν αυτον φιλον και συμμαχον ημων
So he sent Jonathan a letter written in these terms:17 και εγραψεν επιστολας και απεστειλεν αυτω κατα τους λογους τουτους λεγων
"King Alexander sends greetings to his brother Jonathan.18 βασιλευς αλεξανδρος τω αδελφω ιωναθαν χαιρειν
We have heard of you, that you are a mighty warrior and worthy to be our friend.19 ακηκοαμεν περι σου οτι ανηρ δυνατος ισχυι και επιτηδειος ει του ειναι ημων φιλος
We have therefore appointed you today to be high priest of your nation; you are to be called the King's Friend, and you are to look after our interests and preserve amity with us." He also sent him a purple robe and a crown of gold.20 και νυν καθεστακαμεν σε σημερον αρχιερεα του εθνους σου και φιλον βασιλεως καλεισθαι σε και απεστειλεν αυτω πορφυραν και στεφανον χρυσουν και φρονειν τα ημων και συντηρειν φιλιας προς ημας
Jonathan put on the sacred vestments in the seventh month of the year one hundred and sixty at the feast of Booths, and he gathered an army and procured many arms.21 και ενεδυσατο ιωναθαν την αγιαν στολην τω εβδομω μηνι ετους εξηκοστου και εκατοστου εν εορτη σκηνοπηγιας και συνηγαγεν δυναμεις και κατεσκευασεν οπλα πολλα
When Demetrius heard of these things, he was distressed and said:22 και ηκουσεν δημητριος τους λογους τουτους και ελυπηθη και ειπεν
"Why have we allowed Alexander to get ahead of us by gaining the friendship of the Jews and thus strengthening himself?23 τι τουτο εποιησαμεν οτι προεφθακεν ημας αλεξανδρος του φιλιαν καταλαβεσθαι τοις ιουδαιοις εις στηριγμα
I too will write them conciliatory words and offer dignities and gifts, so that they may be an aid to me."24 γραψω αυτοις καγω λογους παρακλησεως και υψους και δοματων οπως ωσιν συν εμοι εις βοηθειαν
So he sent them this message: "King Demetrius sends greetings to the Jewish nation.25 και απεστειλεν αυτοις κατα τους λογους τουτους βασιλευς δημητριος τω εθνει των ιουδαιων χαιρειν
We have heard how you have kept the treaty with us and continued in our friendship and not gone over to our enemies, and we are glad.26 επει συνετηρησατε τας προς ημας συνθηκας και ενεμεινατε τη φιλια ημων και ου προσεχωρησατε τοις εχθροις ημων ηκουσαμεν και εχαρημεν
Continue, therefore, to keep faith with us, and we will reward you with favors in return for what you do in our behalf.27 και νυν εμμεινατε ετι του συντηρησαι προς ημας πιστιν και ανταποδωσομεν υμιν αγαθα ανθ' ων ποιειτε μεθ' ημων
We will grant you many exemptions and will bestow gifts on you.28 και αφησομεν υμιν αφεματα πολλα και δωσομεν υμιν δοματα
"I now free you, as I also exempt all the Jews, from the tribute, the salt tax, and the crown levies.29 και νυν απολυω υμας και αφιημι παντας τους ιουδαιους απο των φορων και της τιμης του αλος και απο των στεφανων
Instead of collecting the third of the grain and the half of the fruit of the trees that should be my share, I renounce the right from this day forward: Neither now nor in the future will I collect them from the land of Judah or from the three districts annexed from Samaria.30 και αντι του τριτου της σπορας και αντι του ημισους του καρπου του ξυλινου του επιβαλλοντος μοι λαβειν αφιημι απο της σημερον και επεκεινα του λαβειν απο γης ιουδα και απο των τριων νομων των προστιθεμενων αυτη απο της σαμαριτιδος και γαλιλαιας απο της σημερον ημερας και εις τον απαντα χρονον
Let Jerusalem and her territory, her tithes and her tolls, be sacred and free from tax.31 και ιερουσαλημ εστω αγια και αφειμενη και τα ορια αυτης αι δεκαται και τα τελη
I also yield my authority over the citadel in Jerusalem, and I transfer it to the high priest, that he may put in it such men as he shall choose to guard it.32 αφιημι και την εξουσιαν της ακρας της εν ιερουσαλημ και διδωμι τω αρχιερει οπως αν καταστηση εν αυτη ανδρας ους αν αυτος εκλεξηται του φυλασσειν αυτην
Every one of the Jews who has been carried into captivity from the land of Judah into any part of my kingdom I set at liberty without ransom; and let all their taxes, even those on their cattle, be canceled.33 και πασαν ψυχην ιουδαιων την αιχμαλωτισθεισαν απο γης ιουδα εις πασαν βασιλειαν μου αφιημι ελευθεραν δωρεαν και παντες αφιετωσαν τους φορους και των κτηνων αυτων
Let all feast days, sabbaths, new moon festivals, appointed days, and the three days that precede each feast day, and the three days that follow, be days of immunity and exemption for every Jew in my kingdom.34 και πασαι αι εορται και τα σαββατα και νουμηνιαι και ημεραι αποδεδειγμεναι και τρεις ημεραι προ εορτης και τρεις μετα εορτην εστωσαν πασαι ημεραι ατελειας και αφεσεως πασιν τοις ιουδαιοις τοις ουσιν εν τη βασιλεια μου
Let no man have authority to exact payment from them or to molest any of them in any matter.35 και ουχ εξει εξουσιαν ουδεις πρασσειν και παρενοχλειν τινα αυτων περι παντος πραγματος
"Let thirty thousand Jews be enrolled in the king's army and allowances be given them, as is due to all the king's soldiers.36 και προγραφητωσαν των ιουδαιων εις τας δυναμεις του βασιλεως εις τριακοντα χιλιαδας ανδρων και δοθησεται αυτοις ξενια ως καθηκει πασαις ταις δυναμεσιν του βασιλεως
Let some of them be stationed in the king's principal strongholds, and of these let some be given positions of trust in the affairs of the kingdom. Let their superiors and their rulers be taken from among them, and let them follow their own laws, as the king has commanded in the land of Judah.37 και κατασταθησεται εξ αυτων εν τοις οχυρωμασιν του βασιλεως τοις μεγαλοις και εκ τουτων κατασταθησονται επι χρειων της βασιλειας των ουσων εις πιστιν και οι επ' αυτων και οι αρχοντες εστωσαν εξ αυτων και πορευεσθωσαν τοις νομοις αυτων καθα και προσεταξεν ο βασιλευς εν γη ιουδα
"Let the three districts that have been added to Judea from the province of Samaria be incorporated with Judea so that they may be under one man and obey no other authority than the high priest.38 και τους τρεις νομους τους προστεθεντας τη ιουδαια απο της χωρας σαμαρειας προστεθητω τη ιουδαια προς το λογισθηναι του γενεσθαι υφ' ενα του μη υπακουσαι αλλης εξουσιας αλλ' η του αρχιερεως
Ptolemais and its confines I give as a present to the sanctuary in Jerusalem for the necessary expenses of the sanctuary.39 πτολεμαιδα και την προσκυρουσαν αυτη δεδωκα δομα τοις αγιοις τοις εν ιερουσαλημ εις την καθηκουσαν δαπανην τοις αγιοις
I make a yearly personal grant of fifteen thousand silver shekels out of the royal revenues, from appropriate places.40 καγω διδωμι κατ' ενιαυτον δεκα πεντε χιλιαδας σικλων αργυριου απο των λογων του βασιλεως απο των τοπων των ανηκοντων
All the additional funds that the officials did not hand over as they had done in the first years, shall henceforth be handed over for the services of the temple.41 και παν το πλεοναζον ο ουκ απεδιδοσαν απο των χρειων ως εν τοις πρωτοις ετεσιν απο του νυν δωσουσιν εις τα εργα του οικου
Moreover, the dues of five thousand silver shekels that used to be taken from the revenue of the sanctuary every year shall be canceled, since these funds belong to the priests who perform the services.42 και επι τουτοις πεντακισχιλιους σικλους αργυριου ους ελαμβανον απο των χρειων του αγιου απο του λογου κατ' ενιαυτον και ταυτα αφιεται δια το ανηκειν αυτα τοις ιερευσιν τοις λειτουργουσιν
Whoever takes refuge in the temple of Jerusalem or in any of its precincts, because of money he owes the king, or because of any other debt, shall be released, together with all the goods he possesses in my kingdom.43 και οσοι εαν φυγωσιν εις το ιερον το εν ιεροσολυμοις και εν πασιν τοις οριοις αυτου οφειλων βασιλικα και παν πραγμα απολελυσθωσαν και παντα οσα εστιν αυτοις εν τη βασιλεια μου
The cost of rebuilding and restoring the structures of the sanctuary shall be covered out of the royal revenue.44 και του οικοδομηθηναι και επικαινισθηναι τα εργα των αγιων και η δαπανη δοθησεται εκ του λογου του βασιλεως
Likewise the cost of building the walls of Jerusalem and fortifying it all around, and of building walls in Judea, shall be donated from the royal revenue."45 και του οικοδομηθηναι τα τειχη ιερουσαλημ και οχυρωσαι κυκλοθεν και η δαπανη δοθησεται εκ του λογου του βασιλεως και του οικοδομηθηναι τα τειχη εν τη ιουδαια
When Jonathan and the people heard these words, they neither believed nor accepted them, for they remembered the great evil that Demetrius had done in Israel, and how sorely he had afflicted them.46 ως δε ηκουσεν ιωναθαν και ο λαος τους λογους τουτους ουκ επιστευσαν αυτοις ουδε επεδεξαντο οτι επεμνησθησαν της κακιας της μεγαλης ης εποιησεν εν ισραηλ και εθλιψεν αυτους σφοδρα
They therefore decided in favor of Alexander, for he had been the first to address them peaceably, and they remained his allies for the rest of his life.47 και ευδοκησαν εν αλεξανδρω οτι αυτος εγενετο αυτοις αρχηγος λογων ειρηνικων και συνεμαχουν αυτω πασας τας ημερας
King Alexander gathered together a large army and encamped opposite Demetrius.48 και συνηγαγεν αλεξανδρος ο βασιλευς δυναμεις μεγαλας και παρενεβαλεν εξ εναντιας δημητριου
The two kings joined battle, and when the army of Demetrius fled, Alexander pursued him, and overpowered his soldiers.49 και συνηψαν πολεμον οι δυο βασιλεις και εφυγεν η παρεμβολη δημητριου και εδιωξεν αυτον ο αλεξανδρος και ισχυσεν επ' αυτους
He pressed the battle hard until sunset, and Demetrius fell that day.50 και εστερεωσεν τον πολεμον σφοδρα εως εδυ ο ηλιος και επεσεν ο δημητριος εν τη ημερα εκεινη
Alexander sent ambassadors to Ptolemy, king of Egypt, with this message:51 και απεστειλεν αλεξανδρος προς πτολεμαιον βασιλεα αιγυπτου πρεσβεις κατα τους λογους τουτους λεγων
"Now that I have returned to my realm, taken my seat on the throne of my fathers, and established my rule by crushing Demetrius and gaining control of my country--52 επει ανεστρεψα εις την βασιλειαν μου και ενεκαθισα επι θρονου πατερων μου και εκρατησα της αρχης και συνετριψα τον δημητριον και επεκρατησα της χωρας ημων
for I engaged him in battle, defeated him and his army, and recovered the royal throne--53 και συνηψα προς αυτον μαχην και συνετριβη αυτος και η παρεμβολη αυτου υφ' ημων και εκαθισαμεν επι θρονου βασιλειας αυτου
let us now establish friendship with each other. Give me your daughter for my wife; and as your son-in-law, I will give to you and to her gifts worthy of you."54 και νυν στησωμεν προς αυτους φιλιαν και νυν δος μοι την θυγατερα σου εις γυναικα και επιγαμβρευσω σοι και δωσω σοι δοματα και αυτη αξια σου
King Ptolemy answered in these words: "Happy the day on which you returned to the land of your fathers and took your seat on their royal throne!55 και απεκριθη πτολεμαιος ο βασιλευς λεγων αγαθη ημερα εν η επεστρεψας εις γην πατερων σου και εκαθισας επι θρονου βασιλειας αυτων
I will do for you what you have written; but meet me in Ptolemais, so that we may see each other, and I will become your father-in-law as you have proposed."56 και νυν ποιησω σοι α εγραψας αλλα απαντησον εις πτολεμαιδα οπως ιδωμεν αλληλους και επιγαμβρευσω σοι καθως ειρηκας
So Ptolemy with his daughter Cleopatra set out from Egypt and came to Ptolemais in the year one hundred and sixty-two.57 και εξηλθεν πτολεμαιος εξ αιγυπτου αυτος και κλεοπατρα η θυγατηρ αυτου και ηλθεν εις πτολεμαιδα ετους δευτερου και εξηκοστου και εκατοστου
There King Alexander met him, and Ptolemy gave him his daughter Cleopatra in marriage. Their wedding was celebrated at Ptolemais with great splendor according to the custom of kings.58 και απηντησεν αυτω αλεξανδρος ο βασιλευς και εξεδετο αυτω κλεοπατραν την θυγατερα αυτου και εποιησεν τον γαμον αυτης εν πτολεμαιδι καθως οι βασιλεις εν δοξη μεγαλη
King Alexander also wrote to Jonathan to come and meet him.59 και εγραψεν αλεξανδρος ο βασιλευς ιωναθη ελθειν εις συναντησιν αυτω
So he went with pomp to Ptolemais, where he met the two kings and gave them and their friends silver and gold and many gifts and thus won their favor.60 και επορευθη μετα δοξης εις πτολεμαιδα και απηντησεν τοις δυσιν βασιλευσι και εδωκεν αυτοις αργυριον και χρυσιον και τοις φιλοις αυτων και δοματα πολλα και ευρεν χαριν ενωπιον αυτων
Some pestilent Israelites, transgressors of the law, united against him to accuse him, but the king paid no heed to them.61 και επισυνηχθησαν επ' αυτον ανδρες λοιμοι εξ ισραηλ ανδρες παρανομοι εντυχειν κατ' αυτου και ου προσεσχεν αυτοις ο βασιλευς
He ordered Jonathan to be divested of his ordinary garments and to be clothed in royal purple; and so it was done.62 και προσεταξεν ο βασιλευς και εξεδυσαν ιωναθαν τα ιματια αυτου και ενεδυσαν αυτον πορφυραν και εποιησαν ουτως
The king also had him seated at his side. He said to his magistrates: "Go with him to the center of the city and make a proclamation that no one is to bring charges against him on any grounds or be troublesome to him in any way."63 και εκαθισεν αυτον ο βασιλευς μετ' αυτου και ειπεν τοις αρχουσιν αυτου εξελθατε μετ' αυτου εις μεσον της πολεως και κηρυξατε του μηδενα εντυγχανειν κατ' αυτου περι μηδενος πραγματος και μηδεις αυτω παρενοχλειτω περι παντος λογου
When his accusers saw the honor paid to him in the proclamation, and the purple with which he was clothed, they all fled.64 και εγενετο ως ειδον οι εντυγχανοντες την δοξαν αυτου καθως εκηρυξεν και περιβεβλημενον αυτον πορφυραν και εφυγον παντες
The king also honored him by numbering him among his Chief Friends and made him military commander and governor of the province.65 και εδοξασεν αυτον ο βασιλευς και εγραψεν αυτον των πρωτων φιλων και εθετο αυτον στρατηγον και μεριδαρχην
So Jonathan returned in peace and happiness to Jerusalem.66 και επεστρεψεν ιωναθαν εις ιερουσαλημ μετ' ειρηνης και ευφροσυνης
In the year one hundred and sixty-five, Demetrius, son of Demetrius, came from Crete to the land of his fathers.67 και εν ετει πεμπτω και εξηκοστω και εκατοστω ηλθεν δημητριος υιος δημητριου εκ κρητης εις την γην των πατερων αυτου
When King Alexander heard of it he was greatly troubled, and returned to Antioch.68 και ηκουσεν αλεξανδρος ο βασιλευς και ελυπηθη σφοδρα και υπεστρεψεν εις αντιοχειαν
Demetrius appointed Apollonius governor of Coelesyria. Having gathered a large army, Appollonius pitched his camp at Jamnia. From there he sent this message to Jonathan the high priest:69 και κατεστησεν δημητριος απολλωνιον τον οντα επι κοιλης συριας και συνηγαγεν δυναμιν μεγαλην και παρενεβαλεν επι ιαμνειαν και απεστειλεν προς ιωναθαν τον αρχιερεα λεγων
"You are the only one who resists us. I am laughed at and put to shame on your account. Why are you displaying power against us in the mountains?70 συ μονωτατος επαιρη εφ' ημας εγω δε εγενηθην εις καταγελωτα και εις ονειδισμον δια σε και δια τι συ εξουσιαζη εφ' ημας εν τοις ορεσι
If you have confidence in your forces, come down now to us in the plain, and let us test each other's strength there; the city forces are on my side.71 νυν ουν ει πεποιθας επι ταις δυναμεσιν σου καταβηθι προς ημας εις το πεδιον και συγκριθωμεν εαυτοις εκει οτι μετ' εμου εστιν δυναμις των πολεων
Inquire and learn who I am and who the others are who are helping me. Men say that you cannot make a stand against us because your fathers were twice put to flight in their own land.72 ερωτησον και μαθε τις ειμι και οι λοιποι οι βοηθουντες ημιν και λεγουσιν ουκ εστιν υμιν στασις ποδος κατα προσωπον ημων οτι δις ετροπωθησαν οι πατερες σου εν τη γη αυτων
Now you too will be unable to withstand our cavalry and such a force as this in the plain, where there is not a stone or a pebble or a place to flee."73 και νυν ου δυνηση υποστηναι την ιππον και δυναμιν τοιαυτην εν τω πεδιω οπου ουκ εστιν λιθος ουδε κοχλαξ ουδε τοπος του φυγειν
When Jonathan heard the message of Apollonius, he was roused. Choosing ten thousand men, he set out from Jerusalem, and Simon his brother joined him to help him.74 ως δε ηκουσεν ιωναθαν των λογων απολλωνιου εκινηθη τη διανοια και επελεξεν δεκα χιλιαδας ανδρων και εξηλθεν εξ ιερουσαλημ και συνηντησεν αυτω σιμων ο αδελφος αυτου επι βοηθειαν αυτω
He pitched camp near Joppa, but the men in the city shut him out because Apollonius had a garrison there. When the Jews besieged it,75 και παρενεβαλεν επι ιοππην και απεκλεισαν αυτην οι εκ της πολεως οτι φρουρα απολλωνιου εν ιοππη και επολεμησαν αυτην
the men of the city became afraid and opened the gates, and so Jonathan took possession of Joppa.76 και φοβηθεντες ηνοιξαν οι εκ της πολεως και εκυριευσεν ιωναθαν ιοππης
When Apollonius heard of it, he drew up three thousand horsemen and an innumerable infantry. He marched on Azotus as though he were going on through the country, but at the same time he advanced into the plain, because he had such a large number of horsemen to rely on.77 και ηκουσεν απολλωνιος και παρενεβαλεν τρισχιλιαν ιππον και δυναμιν πολλην και επορευθη εις αζωτον ως διοδευων και αμα προηγεν εις το πεδιον δια το εχειν αυτον πληθος ιππου και πεποιθεναι επ' αυτη
Jonathan followed him to Azotus, and they engaged in battle.78 και κατεδιωξεν οπισω αυτου εις αζωτον και συνηψαν αι παρεμβολαι εις πολεμον
Apollonius, however, had left a thousand cavalry in hiding behind them.79 και απελιπεν απολλωνιος χιλιαν ιππον κρυπτως κατοπισθεν αυτων
When Jonathan discovered that there was an ambush behind him, his army was surrounded. From morning until evening they showered his men with arrows.80 και εγνω ιωναθαν οτι εστιν ενεδρον κατοπισθεν αυτου και εκυκλωσαν αυτου την παρεμβολην και εξετιναξαν τας σχιζας εις τον λαον εκ πρωιθεν εως δειλης
But his men held their ground, as Jonathan had commanded, whereas the enemy's horses became tired out.81 ο δε λαος ειστηκει καθως επεταξεν ιωναθαν και εκοπιασαν οι ιπποι αυτων
When the horsemen were exhausted, Simon attacked the phalanx, overwhelmed it and put it to flight.82 και ειλκυσεν σιμων την δυναμιν αυτου και συνηψεν προς την φαλαγγα η γαρ ιππος εξελυθη και συνετριβησαν υπ' αυτου και εφυγον
The horsemen too were scattered over the plain. The enemy fled to Azotus and entered Beth-dagon, the temple of their idol, to save themselves.83 και η ιππος εσκορπισθη εν τω πεδιω και εφυγον εις αζωτον και εισηλθον εις βηθδαγων το ειδωλιον αυτων του σωθηναι
But Jonathan burned and plundered Azotus with its neighboring towns, and destroyed by fire both the temple of Dagon and the men who had taken refuge in it.84 και ενεπυρισεν ιωναθαν την αζωτον και τας πολεις τας κυκλω αυτης και ελαβεν τα σκυλα αυτων και το ιερον δαγων και τους συμφυγοντας εις αυτο ενεπυρισεν πυρι
Those who fell by the sword, together with those who were burned alive, came to about eight thousand men.85 και εγενοντο οι πεπτωκοτες μαχαιρα συν τοις εμπυρισθεισιν εις ανδρας οκτακισχιλιους
Then Jonathan left there and pitched his camp at Ashkalon, and the people of that city came out to meet him with great pomp.86 και απηρεν εκειθεν ιωναθαν και παρενεβαλεν επι ασκαλωνα και εξηλθον οι εκ της πολεως εις συναντησιν αυτω εν δοξη μεγαλη
He and his men then returned to Jerusalem, laden with much booty.87 και επεστρεψεν ιωναθαν εις ιερουσαλημ συν τοις παρ' αυτου εχοντες σκυλα πολλα
When King Alexander heard of these events, he accorded new honors to Jonathan.88 και εγενετο ως ηκουσεν αλεξανδρος ο βασιλευς τους λογους τουτους και προσεθετο ετι δοξασαι τον ιωναθαν
He sent him a gold buckle, such as is usually given to King's Kinsmen; he also gave him Ekron and all its territory as a possession.89 και απεστειλεν αυτω πορπην χρυσην ως εθος εστιν διδοσθαι τοις συγγενεσιν των βασιλεων και εδωκεν αυτω την ακκαρων και παντα τα ορια αυτης εις κληροδοσιαν
