Exodus 2

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Now a certain man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman,	1 Un homme de la maison de Lévi s'en alla prendre pour femme une fille de Lévi.
2 who conceived and bore a son. Seeing that he was a goodly child, she hid him for three months.	2 Celle-ci conçut et enfanta un fils. Voyant combien il était beau, elle le dissimula pendant trois mois.
3 When she could hide him no longer, she took a papyrus basket, daubed it with bitumen and pitch, and putting the child in it, placed it among the reeds on the river bank.	3 Ne pouvant le dissimuler plus longtemps, elle prit pour lui une corbeille de papyrus qu'elle enduisitde bitume et de poix, y plaça l'enfant et la déposa dans les roseaux sur la rive du Fleuve.
4 His sister stationed herself at a distance to find out what would happen to him.	4 La soeur de l'enfant se posta à distance pour voir ce qui lui adviendrait.
5 Pharaoh's daughter came down to the river to bathe, while her maids walked along the river bank. Noticing the basket among the reeds, she sent her handmaid to fetch it.	5 Or la fille de Pharaon descendit au Fleuve pour s'y baigner, tandis que ses servantes se promenaientsur la rive du Fleuve. Elle aperçut la corbeille parmi les roseaux et envoya sa servante la prendre.
6 On opening it, she looked, and lo, there was a baby boy, crying! She was moved with pity for him and said, "It is one of the Hebrews' children."	6 Elle l'ouvrit et vit l'enfant: c'était un garçon qui pleurait. Touchée de compassion pour lui, elle dit:"C'est un des petits Hébreux."
7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and call one of the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?"	7 La soeur de l'enfant dit alors à la fille de Pharaon: "Veux-tu que j'aille te chercher, parmi les femmesdes Hébreux, une nourrice qui te nourrira cet enfant? --
8 "Yes, do so," she answered. So the maiden went and called the child's own mother.	8 Va", lui répondit la fille de Pharaon. La jeune fille alla donc chercher la mère de l'enfant.
9 Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this child and nurse it for me, and I will repay you." The woman therefore took the child and nursed it.	9 La fille de Pharaon lui dit: "Emmène cet enfant et nourris-le moi, je te donnerai moi-même tonsalaire." Alors la femme emporta l'enfant et le nourrit.
10 When the child grew, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, who adopted him as her son and called him Moses; for she said, "I drew him out of the water."	10 Quand l'enfant eut grandi, elle le ramena à la fille de Pharaon qui le traita comme un fils et lui donnale nom de Moïse, car, disait-elle, "je l'ai tiré des eaux."
11 On one occasion, after Moses had grown up, when he visited his kinsmen and witnessed their forced labor, he saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his own kinsmen.	11 Il advint, en ces jours-là, que Moïse, qui avait grandi, alla voir ses frères. Il vit les corvéesauxquelles ils étaient astreints; il vit aussi un Egyptien qui frappait un Hébreu, un de ses frères.
12 Looking about and seeing no one, he slew the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.	12 Il se tourna de-ci de-là, et voyant qu'il n'y avait personne, il tua l'Egyptien et le cacha dans le sable.
13 The next day he went out again, and now two Hebrews were fighting! So he asked the culprit, "Why are you striking your fellow Hebrew?"	13 Le jour suivant, il revint alors que deux Hébreux se battaient. "Pourquoi frappes-tu toncompagnon?" Dit-il à l'agresseur.
14 But he replied, "Who has appointed you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?" Then Moses became afraid and thought, "The affair must certainly be known."	14 Celui-ci répondit: "Qui t'a constitué notre chef et notre juge? Veux-tu me tuer comme tu as tuél'Egyptien?" Moïse effrayé se dit: "Certainement l'affaire se sait."
15 Pharaoh, too, heard of the affair and sought to put him to death. But Moses fled from him and stayed in the land of Midian. As he was seated there by a well,	15 Pharaon entendit parler de cette affaire et chercha à tuer Moïse. Moïse s'enfuit loin de Pharaon; il serendit au pays de Madiân et s'assit auprès d'un puits.
16 seven daughters of a priest of Midian came to draw water and fill the troughs to water their father's flock.	16 Or un prêtre de Madiân avait sept filles. Elles vinrent puiser et remplir les auges pour abreuver lepetit bétail de leur père.
17 But some shepherds came and drove them away. Then Moses got up and defended them and watered their flock.	17 Des bergers survinrent et les chassèrent. Moïse se leva, vint à leur secours et abreuva le petit bétail.
18 When they returned to their father Reuel, he said to them, "How is it you have returned so soon today?"	18 Elles revinrent auprès de Réuel, leur père, qui leur dit: "Pourquoi revenez-vous si tôt aujourd'hui?"
19 They answered, "An Egyptian saved us from the interference of the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock!"	19 Elles lui dirent: "Un Egyptien nous a tirées des mains des bergers; il a même puisé pour nous etabreuvé le petit bétail. --
20 "Where is the man?" he asked his daughters. "Why did you leave him there? Invite him to have something to eat."	20 Et où est-il? Demanda-t-il à ses filles. Pourquoi donc avez-vous abandonné cet homme? Invitez-le àmanger."
21 Moses agreed to live with him, and the man gave him his daughter Zipporah in marriage.	21 Moïse consentit à s'établir auprès de cet homme qui lui donna sa fille, Cippora.
22 She bore him a son, whom he named Gershom; for he said, "I am a stranger in a foreign land."	22 Elle mit au monde un fils qu'il nomma Gershom car, dit-il, "je suis un immigré en terre étrangère."
23 A long time passed, during which the king of Egypt died. Still the Israelites groaned and cried out because of their slavery. As their cry for release went up to God,	23 Au cours de cette longue période, le roi d'Egypte mourut. Les Israélites, gémissant de leur servitude,crièrent, et leur appel à l'aide monta vers Dieu, du fond de leur servitude.
24 he heard their groaning and was mindful of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.	24 Dieu entendit leur gémissement; Dieu se souvint de son alliance avec Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.
25 He saw the Israelites and knew. . . .	25 Dieu vit les Israélites et Dieu connut...
