NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt,1 Dixit quoque Dominus ad Moysen et Aaron in terra Ægypti :
"This month shall stand at the head of your calendar; you shall reckon it the first month of the year.2 Mensis iste, vobis principium mensium : primus erit in mensibus anni.
Tell the whole community of Israel: On the tenth of this month every one of your families must procure for itself a lamb, one apiece for each household.3 Loquimini ad universum c?tum filiorum Israël, et dicite eis : Decima die mensis hujus tollat unusquisque agnum per familias et domos suas.
If a family is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join the nearest household in procuring one and shall share in the lamb in proportion to the number of persons who partake of it.4 Sin autem minor est numerus ut sufficere possit ad vescendum agnum, assumet vicinum suum qui junctus est domui suæ, juxta numerum animarum quæ sufficere possunt ad esum agni.
The lamb must be a year-old male and without blemish. You may take it from either the sheep or the goats.5 Erit autem agnus absque macula, masculus, anniculus : juxta quem ritum tolletis et hædum.
You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, and then, with the whole assembly of Israel present, it shall be slaughtered during the evening twilight.6 Et servabitis eum usque ad quartamdecimam diem mensis hujus : immolabitque eum universa multitudo filiorum Israël ad vesperam.
They shall take some of its blood and apply it to the two doorposts and the lintel of every house in which they partake of the lamb.7 Et sument de sanguine ejus, ac ponent super utrumque postem, et in superliminaribus domorum, in quibus comedent illum.
That same night they shall eat its roasted flesh with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.8 Et edent carnes nocte illa assas igni, et azymos panes cum lactucis agrestibus.
It shall not be eaten raw or boiled, but roasted whole, with its head and shanks and inner organs.9 Non comedetis ex eo crudum quid, nec coctum aqua, sed tantum assum igni : caput cum pedibus ejus et intestinis vorabitis.
None of it must be kept beyond the next morning; whatever is left over in the morning shall be burned up.10 Nec remanebit quidquam ex eo usque mane ; si quid residuum fuerit, igne comburetis.
"This is how you are to eat it: with your loins girt, sandals on your feet and your staff in hand, you shall eat like those who are in flight. It is the Passover of the LORD.11 Sic autem comedetis illum : renes vestros accingetis, et calceamenta habebitis in pedibus, tenentes baculos in manibus, et comedetis festinanter : est enim Phase (id est, transitus) Domini.
For on this same night I will go through Egypt, striking down every first--born of the land, both man and beast, and executing judgment on all the gods of Egypt-I, the LORD!12 Et transibo per terram Ægypti nocte illa, percutiamque omne primogenitum in terra Ægypti ab homine usque ad pecus : et in cunctis diis Ægypti faciam judicia. Ego Dominus.
But the blood will mark the houses where you are. Seeing the blood, I will pass over you; thus, when I strike the land of Egypt, no destructive blow will come upon you.13 Erit autem sanguis vobis in signum in ædibus in quibus eritis : et videbo sanguinem, et transibo vos : nec erit in vobis plaga disperdens quando percussero terram Ægypti.
"This day shall be a memorial feast for you, which all your generations shall celebrate with pilgrimage to the LORD, as a perpetual institution.14 Habebitis autem hunc diem in monimentum : et celebrabitis eam solemnem Domino in generationibus vestris cultu sempiterno.
For seven days you must eat unleavened bread. From the very first day you shall have your houses clear of all leaven. Whoever eats leavened bread from the first day to the seventh shall be cut off from Israel.15 Septem diebus azyma comedetis : in die primo non erit fermentum in domibus vestris : quicumque comederit fermentatum, peribit anima illa de Israël, a primo die usque ad diem septimum.
On the first day you shall hold a sacred assembly, and likewise on the seventh. On these days you shall not do any sort of work, except to prepare the food that everyone needs.16 Dies prima erit sancta atque solemnis, et dies septima eadem festivitate venerabilis : nihil operis facietis in eis, exceptis his, quæ ad vescendum pertinent.
"Keep, then, this custom of the unleavened bread. Since it was on this very day that I brought your ranks out of the land of Egypt, you must celebrate this day throughout your generations as a perpetual institution.17 Et observabitis azyma : in eadem enim ipsa die educam exercitum vestrum de terra Ægypti, et custodietis diem istum in generationes vestras ritu perpetuo.
From the evening of the fourteenth day of the first month until the evening of the twenty-first day of this month you shall eat unleavened bread.18 Primo mense, quartadecima die mensis ad vesperam, comedetis azyma usque ad diem vigesimam primam ejusdem mensis ad vesperam.
For seven days no leaven may be found in your houses. Anyone, be he a resident alien or a native, who eats leavened food shall be cut off from the community of Israel.19 Septem diebus fermentum non invenietur in domibus vestris : qui comederit fermentatum, peribit anima ejus de c?tu Israël, tam de advenis quam de indigenis terræ.
Nothing leavened may you eat; wherever you dwell you may eat only unleavened bread."20 Omne fermentatum non comedetis : in cunctis habitaculis vestris edetis azyma.
Moses called all the elders of Israel and said to them, "Go and procure lambs for your families, and slaughter them as Passover victims.21 Vocavit autem Moyses omnes seniores filiorum Israël, et dixit ad eos : Ite tollentes animal per familias vestras, et immolate Phase.
Then take a bunch of hyssop, and dipping it in the blood that is in the basin, sprinkle the lintel and the two doorposts with this blood. But none of you shall go outdoors until morning.22 Fasciculumque hyssopi tingite in sanguine qui est in limine, et aspergite ex eo superliminare, et utrumque postem : nullus vestrum egrediatur ostium domus suæ usque mane.
For the LORD will go by, striking down the Egyptians. Seeing the blood on the lintel and the two doorposts, the LORD will pass over that door and not let the destroyer come into your houses to strike you down.23 Transibit enim Dominus percutiens Ægyptios : cumque viderit sanguinem in superliminari, et in utroque poste, transcendet ostium domus, et non sinet percussorem ingredi domos vestras et lædere.
"You shall observe this as a perpetual ordinance for yourselves and your descendants.24 Custodi verbum istud legitimum tibi et filiis tuis usque in æternum.
Thus, you must also observe this rite when you have entered the land which the LORD will give you as he promised.25 Cumque introieritis terram, quam Dominus daturus est vobis ut pollicitus est, observabitis cæremonias istas.
When your children ask you, 'What does this rite of yours mean?'26 Et cum dixerint vobis filii vestri : Quæ est ista religio ?
you shall reply, 'This is the Passover sacrifice of the LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt; when he struck down the Egyptians, he spared our houses.'" Then the people bowed down in worship,27 Dicetis eis : Victima transitus Domini est, quando transivit super domos filiorum Israël in Ægypto, percutiens Ægyptios, et domos nostras liberans. Incurvatusque populus adoravit.
and the Israelites went and did as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron.28 Et egressi filii Israël fecerunt sicut præceperat Dominus Moysi et Aaron.
At midnight the LORD slew every first-born in the land of Egypt, from the first-born of Pharaoh on the throne to the first-born of the prisoner in the dungeon, as well as all the first-born of the animals.29 Factum est autem in noctis medio, percussit Dominus omne primogenitum in terra Ægypti, a primogenito Pharaonis, qui in solio ejus sedebat, usque ad primogenitum captivæ quæ erat in carcere, et omne primogenitum jumentorum.
Pharaoh arose in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians; and there was loud wailing throughout Egypt, for there was not a house without its dead.30 Surrexitque Pharao nocte, et omnes servi ejus, cunctaque Ægyptus : et ortus est clamor magnus in Ægypto : neque enim erat domus in qua non jaceret mortuus.
During the night Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Leave my people at once, you and the Israelites with you! Go and worship the LORD as you said.31 Vocatisque Pharao Moyse et Aaron nocte, ait : Surgite et egredimini a populo meo, vos et filii Israël : ite, immolate Domino sicut dicitis.
Take your flocks, too, and your herds, as you demanded, and be gone; and you will be doing me a favor."32 Oves vestras et armenta assumite ut petieratis, et abeuntes benedicite mihi.
The Egyptians likewise urged the people on, to hasten their departure from the land; they thought that otherwise they would all die.33 Urgebantque Ægyptii populum de terra exire velociter, dicentes : Omnes moriemur.
The people, therefore, took their dough before it was leavened, in their kneading bowls wrapped in their cloaks on their shoulders.34 Tulit igitur populus conspersam farinam antequam fermentaretur : et ligans in palliis, posuit super humeros suos.
The Israelites did as Moses had commanded: they asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold and for clothing.35 Feceruntque filii Israël sicut præceperat Moyses : et petierunt ab Ægyptiis vasa argentea et aurea, vestemque plurimam.
The LORD indeed had made the Egyptians so well-disposed toward the people that they let them have whatever they asked for. Thus did they despoil the Egyptians.36 Dominus autem dedit gratiam populo coram Ægyptiis ut commodarent eis : et spoliaverunt Ægyptios.
The Israelites set out from Rameses for Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, not counting the children.37 Profectique sunt filii Israël de Ramesse in Socoth, sexcenta fere millia peditum virorum, absque parvulis.
A crowd of mixed ancestry also went up with them, besides their livestock, very numerous flocks and herds.38 Sed et vulgus promiscuum innumerabile ascendit cum eis, oves et armenta et animantia diversi generis multa nimis.
Since the dough they had brought out of Egypt was not leavened, they baked it into unleavened loaves. They had been rushed out of Egypt and had no opportunity even to prepare food for the journey.39 Coxeruntque farinam, quam dudum de Ægypto conspersam tulerant : et fecerunt subcinericios panes azymos : neque enim poterant fermentari, cogentibus exire Ægyptiis, et nullam facere sinentibus moram : nec pulmenti quidquam occurrerat præparare.
The time the Israelites had stayed in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years.40 Habitatio autem filiorum Israël qua manserunt in Ægypto, fuit quadringentorum triginta annorum.
At the end of four hundred and thirty years, all the hosts of the LORD left the land of Egypt on this very date.41 Quibus expletis, eadem die egressus est omnis exercitus Domini de terra Ægypti.
This was a night of vigil for the LORD, as he led them out of the land of Egypt; so on this same night all the Israelites must keep a vigil for the LORD throughout their generations.42 Nox ista est observabilis Domini, quando eduxit eos de terra Ægypti : hanc observare debent omnes filii Israël in generationibus suis.
The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "These are the regulations for the Passover. No foreigner may partake of it.43 Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen et Aaron : Hæc est religio Phase : omnis alienigena non comedet ex eo.
However, any slave who has been bought for money may partake of it, provided you have first circumcised him.44 Omnis autem servus emptitius circumcidetur, et sic comedet.
But no transient alien or hired servant may partake of it.45 Advena et mercenarius non edent ex eo.
It must be eaten in one and the same house; you may not take any of its flesh outside the house. You shall not break any of its bones.46 In una domo comedetur, nec efferetis de carnibus ejus foras, nec os illius confringetis.
The whole community of Israel must keep this feast.47 Omnis c?tus filiorum Israël faciet illud.
If any aliens living among you wish to celebrate the Passover of the LORD, all the males among them must first be circumcised, and then they may join in its observance just like the natives. But no man who is uncircumcised may partake of it.48 Quod si quis peregrinorum in vestram voluerit transire coloniam, et facere Phase Domini, circumcidetur prius omne masculinum ejus, et tunc rite celebrabit : eritque sicut indigena terræ : si quis autem circumcisus non fuerit, non vescetur ex eo.
The law shall be the same for the resident alien as for the native."49 Eadem lex erit indigenæ et colono qui peregrinatur apud vos.
All the Israelites did just as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron.50 Feceruntque omnes filii Israël sicut præceperat Dominus Moysi et Aaron.
On that same day the LORD brought the Israelites out of Egypt company by company.51 Et eadem die eduxit Dominus filios Israël de terra Ægypti per turmas suas.
