1 In the eighteenth year, on the twenty-second day of the first month, there was a discussion in the palace of Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Assyrians, about taking revenge on the whole world, as he had threatened.	1 Le vingt-deuxième jour du premier mois, en la dix-huitième année de son règne, on parla dans le palais de Nabukodonozor, roi des Assyriens, de tirer vengeance de toute la terre, selon la promesse qu’il avait faite.
2 He summoned all his ministers and nobles, laid before them his secret plan, and urged the total destruction of those countries.	2 Il rassembla donc tous ses généraux, tous les chefs, et leur exposa le projet qu’il avait décidé en lui-même. Il voulait en finir, d’une parole de sa bouche, avec ce mauvais vouloir de la terre entière.
3 They decided to do away with all those who had refused to comply with the order he had issued.	3 Et tous furent d’accord pour exterminer tous ceux qui n’avaient pas obéi à sa parole.
4 When he had completed his plan, Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Assyrians, summoned Holofernes, general in chief of his forces, second to himself in command, and said to him:	4 À la fin du conseil, Nabukodonozor roi des Assyriens appela Holoferne, général en chef de son armée, son adjoint, et il lui dit:
5 "Thus says the great king, the lord of all the earth: Go forth from my presence, take with you men of proven valor, a hundred and twenty thousand infantry and twelve thousand cavalry,	5 “Ainsi parle le grand roi, le seigneur de toute la terre: Dès que tu m’auras quitté, tu prendras avec toi des hommes sûrs de leur force, environ 120 000 fantassins, une grande quantité de chevaux avec 12 000 cavaliers,
6 and proceed against all the land of the West, because they did not comply with the order I issued.	6 et tu iras combattre tous les pays de l’Occident, car ils ont désobéi à mon ordre.
7 Tell them to have earth and water ready, for I will come against them in my wrath; I will cover all the land with the feet of my soldiers, to whom I will deliver them as spoils.	7 Tu leur ordonneras de se préparer à l’esclavage, car dans ma colère, je vais marcher contre eux. Les pas de mes soldats fouleront toute la terre et je la livrerai au pillage.
8 Their slain shall fill their ravines and wadies, the swelling torrent shall be choked with their dead; 9 and I will deport them as exiles to the very ends of the earth.	8 Les blessés rempliront les ravins, tous les torrents et tous les fleuves seront remplis de cadavres jusqu’à déborder.
	9 Je déporterai les prisonniers jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre.
10 "You go before me and take possession of all their territories for me. If they surrender to you, guard them for me till the day of their punishment.	10 Va donc et prépare-moi le terrain. S’ils se livrent à toi, tu me les garderas pour le jour du châtiment; s’ils ne t’écoutent pas,
11 As for those who resist, show them no quarter, but deliver them up to slaughter and plunder in each country you occupy.	11 tu seras sans pitié pour eux, tu les livreras au massacre et tout le pays au pillage.
12 For as I live, and by the strength of my kingdom, what I have spoken I will accomplish by my power.	12 Car aussi vrai que je suis vivant et que mon royaume est puissant, ce que ma bouche a dit, mes mains le feront.
13 Do not disobey a single one of the orders of your lord; fulfill them exactly as I have commanded you, and do it without delay."	13 Quant à toi, ne désobéis à aucun des ordres de ton seigneur! Exécute point par point tout ce que je t’ai ordonné et exécute-le sans retard!”
14 So Holofernes left the presence of his lord, and summoned all the princes, and the generals and officers of the Assyrian army.	14 Holoferne se retira donc de la présence de son seigneur. Il appela les chefs, les généraux, les officiers de l’armée d’Assyrie.
15 He mustered a hundred and twenty thousand picked troops, as his lord had commanded, and twelve thousand mounted archers,	15 Il dénombra les hommes de guerre pour la bataille, comme son seigneur le lui avait ordonné; il y avait environ 120 000 hommes et 12 000 archers à cheval.
16 and grouped them into a complete combat force.	16 Il les organisa comme on organise une grande armée.
17 He took along a very large number of camels, asses, and mules for their baggage; innumerable sheep, cattle, and goats for their food supply;	17 Il prit des chameaux, des ânes et des mulets en grande quantité pour porter les bagages, et comme provisions il emmena des moutons, des bœufs et des chèvres en nombre incalculable.
18 abundant provisions for each man, and much gold and silver from the royal palace.	18 Il avait ainsi tout le ravitaillement nécessaire pour chaque homme, ainsi qu’une masse d’or et d’argent venant du palais royal.
19 Then he and his whole army proceeded on their expedition in advance of King Nebuchadnezzar, to cover all the western region with their chariots and cavalry and regular infantry.	19 Il se mit en route avec toute son armée pour conquérir toutes les terres situées à l’occident. Avec ses chars, ses cavaliers et les fantassins, il précédait le roi Nabukodonozor.
20 A huge, irregular force, too many to count, like locusts or the dust of the earth, went along with them.	20 Un peuple nombreux comme des sauterelles ou comme la poussière de la terre, les accompagnait, leur nombre était tel qu’on ne pouvait les compter.
21 After a three-day march from Nineveh, they reached the plain of Bectileth, and from Bectileth they next encamped near the mountains to the north of Upper Cilicia.	21 Quittant Ninive, ils marchèrent trois jours dans la direction de la plaine de Bektilet. De Bektilet ils allèrent camper au pied de la montagne, à gauche de la Haute-Cilicie.
22 From there Holofernes took his whole force, the infantry, cavalry, and chariots, and marched into the mountain region.	22 Puis avec toute son armée, avec les fantassins, les cavaliers et les chars, Holoferne s’engagea dans la montagne.
23 He devastated Put and Lud, and plundered all the Rassisites and the Ishmaelites on the border of the desert toward the south of Chaldea.	23 Il attaqua Pout et Loud, il rançonna tous les fils de Rassis et ceux d’Ismaël qui vivent à l’entrée du désert, au sud de Chéléon.
24 Then, following the Euphrates, he went through Mesopotamia, and battered down every fortified city along the Wadi Abron, until he reached the sea.	24 Il longea l’Euphrate, il traversa la Mésopotamie, il dévasta toutes les villes qui dominaient le torrent d’Abrona jusqu’à arriver à la mer.
25 He seized the territory of Cilicia, and cut down everyone who resisted him. Then he proceeded to the southern borders of Japheth, toward Arabia.	25 Il s’empara des pays de la Cilicie, massacra tous ceux qui lui résistaient et arriva jusqu’aux limites méridionales de Jafet, en face de l’Arabie.
26 He surrounded all the Midianites, burned their tents, and plundered their sheepfolds.	26 Il encercla tout le peuple des Madianites, brûla leurs campements et pilla leurs parcs à brebis.
27 Descending to the plain of Damascus at the time of the wheat harvest, he set fire to all their fields, destroyed their flocks and herds, despoiled their cities, devastated their plains, and put all their youths to the sword.	27 Ensuite il descendit dans la plaine de Damas au moment de la fauche des blés, et il mit le feu aux moissons. Il extermina le petit et le gros bétail, il pilla les villes, dévasta les campagnes et tua tous les jeunes par l’épée.
28 The fear and dread of him fell upon all the inhabitants of the coastland, upon those in Sidon and Tyre, and those who dwelt in Sur and Ocina, and the inhabitants of Jamnia. Those in Azotus and Ascalon also feared him greatly.	28 La terreur et l’épouvante s’emparèrent alors de tous les habitants de la côte, que ce soit à Sidon, à Tyr, à Sour, à Okina ou à Jamnia; les habitants d’Azot et d’Ascalon étaient terrorisés.
