1 "Strike up the instruments, a song to my God with timbrels, chant to the Lord with cymbals; Sing to him a new song, exalt and acclaim his name.	1 Então cantou Judit ao Senhor este cântico:
2 For the Lord is God; he crushes warfare, and sets his encampment among his people; he snatched me from the hands of my presecutors.	2 Louvai o Senhor ao som dos tambores, cantai o Senhor ao som de címbalos, entoai-lhe um cântico novo, exaltai e invocai o seu nome.
3 "The Assyrian came from the mountains of the north, with the myriads of his forces he came; Their numbers blocked the torrents, their horses covered the hills.	3 O Senhor é quem põe fim às guerras. O Senhor é seu nome.
4 He threatened to burn my land, put my youths to the sword, Dash my babes to the ground, make my children a prey, and seize my virgins as spoil.	4 Ele pôs o seu acampamento no meio do seu povo, para nos livrar da mão de todos os nossos inimigos.
5 "But the Lord Almighty thwarted them, by a woman's hand he confounded them.	5 O Assírio veio dos montes, da parte do aquilão, com a multidão dos seus guerreiros; sua multidão obstruiu as torrentes, e os seus cavalos cobriam os vales.
6 Not by youths was their mighty one struck down, nor did titans bring him low, nor huge giants attack him; But Judith, the daughter of Merari, by the beauty of her countenance disabled him.	6 Ele jurou que havia de queimar o meu país, que havia de passar ao fio da espada os meus jovens, que havia de dar em presa as minhas crianças, que havia de levar cativas as minhas donzelas.
7 She took off her widow's garb to raise up the afflicted in Israel. She anointed her face with fragrant oil;	7 Porém o Senhor todo poderoso o feriu e o entregou nas mãos duma mulher, que lhe tirou a vida.
8 with a fillet she fastened her tresses, and put on a linen robe to beguile him.	8 O seu herói não foi prostrado ás mãos de jovens (guerreiros), nem o feriram os filhos de Titan, nem se lhe opuseram corpulentos gigantes, Mas Judit, filha de Merari, o derrubou com a formosura do seu rosto.
9 Her sandals caught his eyes, and her beauty captivated his mind. The sword cut through his neck.	9 Ela se despiu do traje de viúva, e se ataviou com os vestidos de alegria, para o triunfo dos filhos de Israel.
10 "The Persians were dismayed at her daring, the Medes appalled at her boldness.	10 Ela ungiu o seu rosto com perfumes, entrançou os seus cabelos sob um turbante e revestiu-se dum vestido novo para o seduzir.
11 When my lowly ones shouted, they were terrified; when my weaklings cried out, they trembled; at the sound of their war cry, they took to flight.	11 As suas sandálias arrebataram-lhe os olhos, a sua beleza cativou-lhe a alma, e ela cortou-lhe a cabeça com o alfange.
12 Sons of slave girls pierced them through; the supposed sons of rebel mothers cut them down; they perished before the ranks of my Lord.	12 Os Persas tremeram diante da sua valentia, os Medos diante da sua ousadia.
13 "A new hymn I will sing to my God. O Lord, great are you and glorious, wonderful in power and unsurpassable.	13 O acampamento dos Assírios ressoou em alaridos, quando apareceram os meus pobres (concidadãos) abrasados de sede.
14 Let your every creature serve you; for you spoke, and they were made, You sent forth your spirit, and they were created; no one can resist your word.	14 Os filhos das jovens esposas traspassaram-nos, mataram-nos (sem resistência) como a meninos que fogem: pereceram no combate diante da face do Senhor meu Deus.
15 The mountains to their bases, and the seas, are shaken; the rocks, like wax, melt before your glance. "But to those who fear you, you are very merciful.	15 Cantemos um hino ao Senhor, cantemos um novo hino ao nosso Deus.
16 Though the sweet odor of every sacrifice is a trifle, and the fat of all holocausts but little in your sight, one who fears the Lord is forever great.	16 Adonai, Senhor, tu és grande, magnífico no teu poder, e ninguém pode superar-te.
17 "Woe to the nations that rise against my people! the Lord Almighty will requite them; in the day of judgment he will punish them: He will send fire and worms into their flesh, and they shall burn and suffer forever."	17 Todas as tuas criaturas te obedeçam, porque tu falaste, e foram feitas; enviaste o teu espírito, e foram criadas, e ninguém resiste à tua voz.
18 The people then went to Jerusalem to worship God; when they were purified, they offered their holocausts, freewill offerings, and gifts.	18 Os montes e as águas são abalados desde os fundamentos, as pedras, qual cera, se derretem diante da tua face,
19 Judith dedicated, as a votive offering to God, all the things of Holofernes that the people had given her, as well as the canopy that she herself had taken from his bedroom.	19 porém aqueles que vos temem, são grandes diante de ti em todas as coisas.
20 For three months the people continued their celebration in Jerusalem before the sanctuary, and Judith remained with them.	20 Ai da nação que se levantar contra o meu povo! porque o Senhor omnipotente se vingará dela, e a visitará no dia do juízo.
21 When those days were over, each one returned to his inheritance. Judith went back to Bethulia and remained on her estate. For the rest of her life she was renowned throughout the land.	21 Ele enviará fogo e vermes sobre as suas carnes, para arderem e para sentirem (este suplício) eternamente.
22 Many wished to marry her, but she gave herself to no man all the days of her life from the time of the death and burial of her husband, Manasseh.	22 Todo o povo, depois da vitória, foi a Jerusalém adorar o Senhor. Logo que se purificaram, todos ofereceram os seus holocaustos, cumprindo os seus votos e as suas promessas.
23 She lived to be very old in the house of her husband, reaching the advanced age of a hundred and five. She died in Bethulia, where they buried her in the tomb of her husband, Manasseh;	23 Judit ofereceu, em anátema de esquecimento, todos os instrumentos de guerra de Holofernes, que o povo lhe tinha dado, e o cortinado que ela mesma tinha tirado do leito dele.
24 and the house of Israel mourned her for seven days. Before she died, she distributed her goods to the relatives of her husband, Manasseh, and to her own relatives; and to the maid she gave her freedom.	24 O povo esteve em grande regozijo diante do santuário, e a alegria desta vitória foi celebrada com Judit por espaço de três meses.
25 During the life of Judith and for a long time after her death, no one again disturbed the Israelites.	25 Passados aqueles dias, cada um voltou para sua casa; Judit ficou sendo célebre em Betúlia, e com grande renome em toda a terra de Israel.
	26 A coragem juntava a castidade, de tal sorte que nunca em todos os dias da sua vida conheceu outro homem, desde que morreu Manassés, seu marido.
	27 Nos dias de festa aparecia em público com todos os seus Adornos.
	28 Morou na casa de seu marido até à idade de cento e cinco anos, e deu a liberdade à sua escrava; morreu e foi sepultada em Betúlia com seu marido.
	29 Todo o povo a chorou durante sete dias.
	30 Em todo o tempo de sua vida, e muitos anos depois da sua morte, não houve quem perturbasse Israel.
	31 O dia da festividade desta vitória foi posto pelo Hebreus na classe dos dias santos, e desde aquele tempo até hoje é festejado pelos judeus.
