1 When it grew late, his servants quickly withdrew. Bagoas closed the tent from the outside and excluded the attendants from their master's presence. They went off to their beds, for they were all tired from the prolonged banquet.	1 Cuando se hizo tarde, sus oficiales se apresusaron a retirarse y Bagoas cerró la tienda por el exterior, después de haber apartado de la presencia de su señor a los que todavía quedaban; y todos se fueron a dormir, fatigados por el exceso de bebida;
2 Judith was left alone in the tent with Holofernes, who lay prostrate on his bed, for he was sodden with wine.	2 quedaron en la tienda tan sólo Judit y Holofernes, desplomado sobre su lecho y rezumando vino.
3 She had ordered her maid to stand outside the bedroom and wait, as on the other days, for her to come out; she said she would be going out for her prayer. To Bagoas she had said this also.	3 Judit había mandado a su sierva que se quedara fuera de su dormitorio y esperase a que saliera, como los demás días. Porque, en efecto, ella había dicho que saldría para hacer su oración y en este mismo sentido había hablado a Bagoas.
4 When all had departed, and no one, small or great, was left in the bedroom, Judith stood by Holofernes' bed and said within herself: "O Lord, God of all might, in this hour look graciously on my undertaking for the exaltation of Jerusalem;	4 Todos se habían retirado; nadie, ni grande ni pequeño, quedó en el dormitorio. Judit, puesta de pie junto al lecho, dijo en su corazón: «¡Oh Señor, Dios de toda fuerza! Pon los ojos, en esta hora, a la empresa de mis manos para exaltación de Jerusalén.
5 now is the time for aiding your heritage and for carrying out my design to shatter the enemies who have risen against us."	5 Es la ocasión de esforzarse por tu heredad y hacer que mis decisiones sean la ruina de los enemigos que se alzan contra nosotros».
6 She went to the bedpost near the head of Holofernes, and taking his sword from it,	6 Avanzó, después, hasta la columna del lecho que estaba junto a la cabeza de Holofernes, tomó de allí su cimitarra,
7 drew close to the bed, grasped the hair of his head, and said, "Strengthen me this day, O God of Israel!"	7 y acercándose al lecho, agarró la cabeza de Holofernes por los cabellos y dijo: «¡Dame fortaleza, Dios de Israel, en este momento!»
8 Then with all her might she struck him twice in the neck and cut off his head.	8 Y, con todas sus fuerzas, le descargó dos golpes sobre el cuello y le cortó la cabeza.
9 She rolled his body off the bed and took the canopy from its supports. Soon afterward, she came out and handed over the head of Holofernes to her maid,	9 Después hizo rodar el tronco fuera del lecho, arrancó las colgaduras de las columnas y saliendo entregó la cabeza de Holofernes a su sierva,
10 who put it into her food pouch; and the two went off together as they were accustomed to do for prayer. They passed through the camp, and skirting the ravine, reached Bethulia on the mountain. As they approached its gates,	10 que la metió en la alforja de las provisiones. Luego salieron las dos juntos a hacer la oración, como de ordinario, atravesaron el campemento, contornearon el barranco, subieron por el monte de Betulia y se presentaron ante las puertas de la ciudad.
11 Judith shouted to the guards from a distance: "Open! Open the gate! God, our God, is with us. Once more he has made manifest his strength in Israel and his power against our enemies; he has done it this very day."	11 Judit gritó desde lejos a los centinelas de las puertas: «¡Abrid, abrid la puerta! El Señor, nuestro Dios, está con nosotros para hacer todavía hazañas en Israel y mostrar su poder contra nuestros enemigos, como lo ha hecho hoy mismo».
12 When the citizens heard her voice, they quickly descended to their city gate and summoned the city elders.	12 Cuando los hombres de la ciudad oyeron su voz, se apresuraron a bajar a la puerta y llamaron a los ancianos.
13 All the people, from the least to the greatest, hurriedly assembled, for her return seemed unbelievable. They opened the gate and welcomed the two women. They made a fire for light; and when they gathered around the two,	13 Acudieron todos corriendo, desde el más grande al más chico, porque no tenían esperanza de que ella volviera; abrieron, pues, la puerta, las recibieron, y encendiendo una hoguera para que se pudiera ver, hicieron corro en torno a ellas.
14 Judith urged them with a loud voice: "Praise God, praise him! Praise God, who has not withdrawn his mercy from the house of Israel, but has shattered our enemies by my hand this very night."	14 Judit, con fuerte voz, les dijo: «¡Alabad a Dios, alabadle! Alabad a Dios, que no ha apartado su misericordia de la casa de Israel, sino que esta noche ha destrozado a nuestros enemigos por mi mano».
15 Then she took the head out of the pouch, showed it to them, and said: "Here is the head of Holofernes, general in charge of the Assyrian army, and here is the canopy under which he lay in his drunkenness. The Lord struck him down by the hand of a woman.	15 Y sacando de la alforja la cabeza, se la mostró, diciéndoles: «Mirad la cabeza de Holofernes, jefe supremo del ejército asirio, y mirad las colgaduras bajo las cuales se acostaba en su borracheras. ¡El Señor le ha herido por mano de mujer!
16 As the Lord lives, who has protected me in the path I have followed, I swear that it was my face that seduced Holofernes to his ruin, and that he did not sin with me to my defilement or disgrace."	16 ¡Vive el Señor!, el que me ha guardado en el camino que emprendí, que fue seducido, para perdición suya, por mi rostro, pero no ha cometido conmigo ningún pecado que me manche o me deshonre».
17 All the people were greatly astonished. They bowed down and worshiped God, saying with one accord, "Blessed are you, our God, who today have brought to nought the enemies of your people."	17 Todo el pueblo quedó lleno de estupor y postrándose adoraron a Dios y dijeron a una: «¡Bendito seas, Dios nuestro, que has aniquilado el día de hoy a los enemigos de tu pueblo!»
18 Then Uzziah said to her: "Blessed are you, daughter, by the Most High God, above all the women on earth; and blessed be the Lord God, the creator of heaven and earth, who guided your blow at the head of the chief of our enemies.	18 Ozías dijo a Judit: «¡Bendita seas, hija del Dios Altísimo más que todas las mujeres de la tierra! Y bendito sea Dios, el Señor, Creador del cielo y de la tierra, que te ha guiado para cortar la cabeza del jefe de nuestros enemigos.
19 Your deed of hope will never be forgotten by those who tell of the might of God.	19 Jamás tu confianza faltará en el corazón de los hombres que recordarán la fuerza de Dios eternamente.
20 May God make this redound to your everlasting honor, rewarding you with blessings, because you risked your life when your people were being oppressed, and you averted our disaster, walking uprightly before our God." And all the people answered, "Amen! Amen!"	20 Que Dios te conceda, para exaltación perpetua, el ser favorecida con todos los bienes, porque no vacilaste en exponer tu vida a causa de la humillación de nuestra raza. Detuviste nuestra ruina procediendo rectamente ante nuestro Dios». Todo el pueblo respondió: «¡Amén, amén!»
