1 It was the twelfth year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Assyriansin the great city of Nineveh. At that time Arphaxad ruled over the Medes in Ecbatana.	1 C'était en la douzième année de Nabuchodonosor, qui régna sur les Assyriens à Ninive la grande ville.Arphaxad régnait alors sur les Mèdes à Ecbatane.
2 Around this city he built a wall of blocks of stone, each three cubits inheight and six in length. He made the wall seventy cubits high and fifty thick.	2 Il entoura cette ville d'un mur d'enceinte en pierres de taille larges de trois coudées et longues de six,donnant au rempart une hauteur de 70 coudées et une largeur de 50.
3 At the gates he raised towers of a hundred cubits, with a thickness of sixty cubits at the base.	3 Aux portes il dressa des tours de cent coudées de haut sur 60 de large à leurs fondations,
4 The gateway he built to a height of seventy cubits, with an opening forty cubits wide for the passage of his chariot forces and the marshaling of his infantry.	4 les portes elles-mêmes s'élevant à 70 coudées avec une largeur de 40, ce qui permettait la sortie dugros de ses forces et le défilé de ses fantassins.
5 Then King Nebuchadnezzar waged war against King Arphaxad in the vast plain, in the district of Ragae.	5 Or, vers cette époque, le roi Nabuchodonosor livra bataille au roi Arphaxad dans la grande plainesituée sur le territoire de Ragau.
6 To him there rallied all the inhabitants of the mountain region, all who dwelt along the Euphrates, the Tigris, and the Hydaspes, and King Arioch of the Elamites, in the plain. Thus many nations came together to resist the people of Cheleoud.	6 A ses côtés s'étaient rangés tous les peuples des montagnes, tous ceux de l'Euphrate, du Tigre, del'Hydaspe, et ceux des plaines soumises au roi des Elyméens Arioch. Ainsi de nombreux peuples serassemblèrent pour prendre part à la bataille des fils de Chéléoud.
7 Now Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Assyrians, sent messengers to all the inhabitants of Persia, and to all those who dwelt in the West: to the inhabitants of Cilicia and Damascus, Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon, to all who dwelt along the seacoast,	7 Nabuchodonosor, roi des Assyriens, envoya un message à tous les habitants de la Perse, à tous ceuxde la région occidentale, de la Cilicie, de Damas, du Liban, de l'Anti-Liban, à tous ceux de la côte,
8 to the peoples of Carmel, Gilead, Upper Galilee, and the vast plain of Esdraelon,	8 aux peuplades du Carmel, de Galaad, de la Haute-Galilée, de la grande plaine d'Esdrelon,
9 to all those in Samaria and its cities, and west of the Jordan as far as Jerusalem, Bethany, Chelous, Kadesh, and the River of Egypt; to Tahpanhes, Raamses, all the land of Goshen,	9 aux gens de Samarie et des villes de sa dépendance, à ceux d'au-delà du Jourdain, jusqu'à Jérusalem,Batanée, Chélous, Cadès, le fleuve d'Egypte, Taphnès, Ramsès, tout le territoire de Goshèn,
10 Tanis, Memphis and beyond, and to all the inhabitants of Egypt as far as the borders of Ethiopia.	10 au-delà de Tanis et de Memphis, et à tous les habitants de l'Egypte jusqu'aux confins de l'Ethiopie.
11 But the inhabitants of all that land disregarded the summons of Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Assyrians, and would not go with him to the war. They were not afraid of him but regarded him as a lone individual opposed to them, and turned away his envoys empty-handed, in disgrace.	11 Mais les habitants de ces contrées ne firent pas cas de l'appel de Nabuchodonosor, roi des Assyriens,et ne se joignirent pas à lui pour faire campagne. Ils ne le craignaient pas car, à leurs yeux, il paraissait un isolé.Ils renvoyèrent donc ses messagers les mains vides et déshonorés.
12 Then Nebuchadnezzar fell into a violent rage against all that land, and swore by his throne and his kingdom that he would avenge himself on all the territories of Cilicia and Damascus and Syria, and also destroy with his sword all the inhabitants of Moab, Ammon, the whole of Judea, and those living anywhere in Egypt as far as the borders of the two seas.	12 Nabuchodonosor en éprouva une violente colère contre tous ces pays. Il jura par son trône et sonroyaume de se venger et de dévaster par l'épée tous les territoires de Cilicie, de Damascène, de Syrie, ainsi queceux de Moab, ceux des Ammonites, de Judée et d'Egypte, jusqu'aux frontières des deux mers.
13 In the seventeenth year he proceeded with his army against King Arphaxad, and was victorious in his campaign. He routed the whole force of Arphaxad, his entire cavalry and all his chariots,	13 Avec ses propres forces, il livra bataille au roi Arphaxad en la dix-septième année et, dans cecombat, le vainquit. Il culbuta toute son armée, sa cavalerie, ses chars,
14 and took possession of his cities. He pressed on to Ecbatana and took its towers, sacked its marketplaces, and turned its glory into shame.	14 se soumit ses villes et parvint jusqu'à Ecbatane. Là il s'empara des tours, ravagea les places, faisantun objet de honte de tout ce qui constituait sa parure.
15 Arphaxad himself he overtook in the mountains of Ragae, ran him through with spears, and utterly destroyed him.	15 Puis il prit Arphaxad dans les montagnes de Ragau, le perça de ses javelots et l'exterminadéfinitivement.
16 Then he returned home with all his numerous, motley horde of warriors; and there he and his army relaxed and feasted for a hundred and twenty days.	16 Il s'en retourna ensuite avec ses troupes et l'immense foule qui s'était jointe à eux, incommensurablecohue d'hommes armés. Alors, dans l'insouciance, ils s'adonnèrent à la bonne chère, lui et son armée, 120 joursdurant.
