1 It was the twelfth year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Assyriansin the great city of Nineveh. At that time Arphaxad ruled over the Medes in Ecbatana.	1 Tout ceci arriva en la douzième année du règne de Nabukodonozor sur les Assyriens, à Ninive, la grande ville. Arfaxad régnait alors sur les Mèdes, à Ekbatane.
2 Around this city he built a wall of blocks of stone, each three cubits inheight and six in length. He made the wall seventy cubits high and fifty thick.	2 Il avait entouré cette ville d’un rempart en belles pierres de taille de 3 coudées de large et 6 de long; le rempart était haut de 70 coudées et large de 50;
3 At the gates he raised towers of a hundred cubits, with a thickness of sixty cubits at the base.	3 des tours de 100 coudées de haut, larges de 60 à la base, se dressaient de chaque côté des portes.
4 The gateway he built to a height of seventy cubits, with an opening forty cubits wide for the passage of his chariot forces and the marshaling of his infantry.	4 Pour faciliter le passage de sa grande armée et le défilé de ses troupes, les portes elles-même avaient 70 coudées de haut et 40 de large.
5 Then King Nebuchadnezzar waged war against King Arphaxad in the vast plain, in the district of Ragae.	5 C’est alors que le roi Nabukodonozor livra bataille au roi Arfaxad, dans la grande plaine du territoire de Ragau.
6 To him there rallied all the inhabitants of the mountain region, all who dwelt along the Euphrates, the Tigris, and the Hydaspes, and King Arioch of the Elamites, in the plain. Thus many nations came together to resist the people of Cheleoud.	6 Arfaxad avait regroupé autour de lui tous les peuples des montagnes, tous les habitants des rives de l’Euphrate, du Tigre et de l’Hydaspe, et tous ceux des plaines soumises à Ariok, roi des Élyméens. Ainsi, ces nombreux peuples s’étaient enrôlés dans l’armée des fils de Chéléoud.
7 Now Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Assyrians, sent messengers to all the inhabitants of Persia, and to all those who dwelt in the West: to the inhabitants of Cilicia and Damascus, Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon, to all who dwelt along the seacoast,	7 De son côté, Nabukodonozor, roi des Assyriens, avait fait appel à tous les habitants de la Perse, des régions de l’occident, de la Cilicie, de Damas, du Liban, de l’Anti-Liban et de la côte,
8 to the peoples of Carmel, Gilead, Upper Galilee, and the vast plain of Esdraelon,	8 aux peuples du Carmel, de Galaad, de la Haute-Galilée, de la grande plaine d’Esdrelon,
9 to all those in Samaria and its cities, and west of the Jordan as far as Jerusalem, Bethany, Chelous, Kadesh, and the River of Egypt; to Tahpanhes, Raamses, all the land of Goshen,	9 aux gens de Samarie et des villes qui l’entourent, les gens d’au-delà du Jourdain jusqu’à Jérusalem, à ceux de Batanée, de Chélous, de Qadesh, à ceux du Fleuve d’Égypte, de Tafnès, de Ramsès, à tous ceux qui habitent le territoire de Gossen,
10 Tanis, Memphis and beyond, and to all the inhabitants of Egypt as far as the borders of Ethiopia.	10 à ceux de Tanis, de Memphis, à tous les habitants de l’Égypte jusqu’aux frontières de l’Éthiopie.
11 But the inhabitants of all that land disregarded the summons of Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Assyrians, and would not go with him to the war. They were not afraid of him but regarded him as a lone individual opposed to them, and turned away his envoys empty-handed, in disgrace.	11 Mais les habitants de toute la terre se moquaient bien de l’appel de Nabukodonozor, roi des Assyriens; ils refusèrent de se rassembler autour de lui pour le combat car ils ne le craignaient pas: pour eux ce n’était qu’un homme. Ils renvoyèrent donc ses messagers les mains vides et humiliés.
12 Then Nebuchadnezzar fell into a violent rage against all that land, and swore by his throne and his kingdom that he would avenge himself on all the territories of Cilicia and Damascus and Syria, and also destroy with his sword all the inhabitants of Moab, Ammon, the whole of Judea, and those living anywhere in Egypt as far as the borders of the two seas.	12 Nabukodonozor se mit en colère contre tous ces pays. Il jura par son trône et par son royaume, de corriger sévèrement tous les pays de Cilicie, de Damascène et de Syrie, et de faire mourir par l’épée tous les habitants de Moab, d’Ammon, de Judée et d’Égypte, jusqu’aux frontières des deux mers.
13 In the seventeenth year he proceeded with his army against King Arphaxad, and was victorious in his campaign. He routed the whole force of Arphaxad, his entire cavalry and all his chariots,	13 Puis, avec son armée, il livra bataille au roi Arfaxad en la dix-septième année de son règne. Il remporta la victoire, écrasant toute l’armée d’Arfaxad, sa cavalerie et ses chars.
14 and took possession of his cities. He pressed on to Ecbatana and took its towers, sacked its marketplaces, and turned its glory into shame.	14 Il s’empara de ses villes et arriva jusqu’à Ekbatane. Là il prit les tours, pilla les rues et transforma en ruines la cité fameuse.
15 Arphaxad himself he overtook in the mountains of Ragae, ran him through with spears, and utterly destroyed him.	15 Il captura Arfaxad dans les montagnes de Ragau, le transperça de ses lances et le fit disparaître pour toujours.
16 Then he returned home with all his numerous, motley horde of warriors; and there he and his army relaxed and feasted for a hundred and twenty days.	16 Il revint ensuite avec tout son monde, une foule immense d’hommes de guerre, et pendant 120 jours il s’installa avec son armée dans une vie de plaisirs et de luxe.
