NEW AMERICAN BIBLEKING JAMES BIBLE
When the wedding celebaration came to an end, Tobit called his son Tobiah and said to him, "Son, see to it that you give what is due to the man who made the journey with you; give him a bonus too."1 Then Tobit called his son Tobias, and said unto him, My son, see that the man have his wages, which went with thee, and thou must give him more.
Tobiah said: "Father, how much shall I pay him? It would not hurt me at all to give him half of all the wealth he brought back with me.2 And Tobias said unto him, O father, it is no harm to me to give him half of those things which I have brought:
He led me back safe and sound; he cured my wife; he brought the money back with me; and he cured you. How much of a bonus should I give him?"3 For he hath brought me again to thee in safety, and made whole my wife, and brought me the money, and likewise healed thee.
Tobit answered, "It is only fair, son, that he should receive half of all that he brought back."4 Then the old man said, It is due unto him.
So Tobiah called Raphael and said, "Take as your wages half of all that you have brought back, and go in peace."5 So he called the angel, and he said unto him, Take half of all that ye have brought and go away in safety.
Raphael called the two men aside privately and said to them: "Thank God! Give him the praise and the glory. Before all the living, acknowledge the many good things he has done for you, by blessing and extolling his name in song. Before all men, honor and proclaim God's deeds, and do not be slack in praising him.6 Then he took them both apart, and said unto them, Bless God, praise him, and magnify him, and praise him for the things which he hath done unto you in the sight of all that live. It is good to praise God, and exalt his name, and honourably to shew forth the works of God; therefore be not slack to praise him.
A king's secret it is prudent to keep, but the works of God are to be declared and made known. Praise them with due honor. Do good, and evil will not find its way to you.7 It is good to keep close the secret of a king, but it is honourable to reveal the works of God. Do that which is good, and no evil shall touch you.
Prayer and fasting are good, but better than either is almsgiving accompanied by righteousness. A little with righteousness is better than abundance with wickedness. It is better to give alms than to store up gold;8 Prayer is good with fasting and alms and righteousness. A little with righteousness is better than much with unrighteousness. It is better to give alms than to lay up gold:
for almsgiving saves one from death and expiates every sin. Those who regularly give alms shall enjoy a full life;9 For alms doth deliver from death, and shall purge away all sin. Those that exercise alms and righteousness shall be filled with life:
but those habitually guilty of sin are their own worst enemies.10 But they that sin are enemies to their own life.
"I will now tell you the whole truth; I will conceal nothing at all from you. I have already said to you, 'A king's secret it is prudent to keep, but the works of God are to be made known with due honor.'11 Surely I will keep close nothing from you. For I said, It was good to keep close the secret of a king, but that it was honourable to reveal the works of God.
I can now tell you that when you, Tobit, and Sarah prayed, it was I who presented and read the record of your prayer before the Glory of the Lord; and I did the same thing when you used to bury the dead.12 Now therefore, when thou didst pray, and Sara thy daughter in law, I did bring the remembrance of your prayers before the Holy One: and when thou didst bury the dead, I was with thee likewise.
When you did not hesitate to get up and leave your dinner in order to go and bury the dead,13 And when thou didst not delay to rise up, and leave thy dinner, to go and cover the dead, thy good deed was not hid from me: but I was with thee.
I was sent to put you to the test. At the same time, however, God commissioned me to heal you and your daughter-in-law Sarah.14 And now God hath sent me to heal thee and Sara thy daughter in law.
I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who enter and serve before the Glory of the Lord."15 I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels, which present the prayers of the saints, and which go in and out before the glory of the Holy One.
Stricken with fear, the two men fell to the ground.16 Then they were both troubled, and fell upon their faces: for they feared.
But Raphael said to them: "No need to fear; you are safe. Thank God now and forever.17 But he said unto them, Fear not, for it shall go well with you; praise God therefore.
As for me, when I came to you it was not out of any favor on my part, but because it was God's will. So continue to thank him every day; praise him with song.18 For not of any favour of mine, but by the will of our God I came; wherefore praise him for ever.
Even though you watched me eat and drink. I did not really do so; what you were seeing was a vision.19 All these days I did appear unto you; but I did neither eat nor drink, but ye did see a vision.
So now get up from the ground and praise God. Behold, I am about to ascend to him who sent me; write down all these things that have happened to you."20 Now therefore give God thanks: for I go up to him that sent me; but write all things which are done in a book.
When Raphael ascended they rose to their feet and could no longer see him.21 And when they arose, they saw him no more.
They kept thanking God and singing his praises; and they continued to acknowledge these marvelous deeds which he had done when the angel of God appeared to them.22 Then they confessed the great and wonderful works of God, and how the angel of the Lord had appeared unto them.
