1 Eliashib the high priest and his priestly brethren took up the task of rebuilding the Sheep Gate. They timbered it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars, then continued the rebuilding to the Tower of Hananel.	1 Si levò allora Eliasib, sommo sacerdote, assieme ai suoi fratelli sacerdoti, e costruirono la porta delle Pecore. Essi stessi la consacrarono e vi misero i battenti. Continuarono a costruire fino alla torre di Mea, che poi consacrarono, e fino alla torre di Cananeèl.
2 At their side the men of Jericho were rebuilding, and next to them was Zaccur, son of Imri.	2 Accanto a loro edificarono gli uomini di Gerico. Vicino a questi costruì Zaccùr, figlio di Imri.
3 The Fish Gate was rebuilt by the sons of Hassenaah; they timbered it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.	3 I figli di Senaa costruirono la porta dei Pesci; ne fecero l'intelaiatura, vi misero i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre.
4 At their side Meremoth, son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, carried out the work of repair; next to him was Meshullam, son of Berechiah, son of Meshezabel; and next to him was Zadok, son of Baana.	4 Accanto a loro lavorò alla restaurazione Meremòt, figlio di Uria, figlio di Hakkoz; vicino a costui Mesullàm, figlio di Berechia, figlio di Mesezabèel; vicino a questi riparò Zadòk, figlio di Baana.
5 Next to him the Tekoites carried out the work of repair; however, some of their outstanding men would not submit to the labor asked by their lords.	5 Accanto ad essi lavorarono alle riparazioni le genti di Tekòa; ma i loro notabili non piegarono il collo al servizio del loro Signore.
6 The New City Gate was repaired by Joiada, son of Paseah; and Meshullam, son of Besodeiah; they timbered it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.	6 Ioiadà, figlio di Pasèach, e Mesullàm, figlio di Besodia, ripararono la porta Vecchia. Essi ne fecero l'intelaiatura, vi misero i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre.
7 At their side were Melatiah the Gibeonite, Jadon the Meronothite, and the men of Gibeon and of Mizpah, who were under the jurisdiction of the governor of West-of-Euphrates.	7 Accanto a loro restaurarono Melatia, il gabaonita, Iadon, il meronotita e gli uomini di Gàbaon e di Mizpà, per conto del governatore dell'Oltrefiume.
8 Next to them the work of repair was carried out by Uzziel, son of Harhaiah, a member of the goldsmiths' guild, and at his side was Hananiah, one of the perfumers' guild. They restored Jerusalem as far as the wall of the public square.	8 Vicino a costoro lavorò per le riparazioni Uzziel, figlio di Caraia, uno degli orefici; e accanto a questi riparò Anania, uno dei profumieri. Essi restaurarono Gerusalemme fino al Muro Largo.
9 Next to them the work of repair was carried out by Rephaiah, son of Hur, leader of half the district of Jerusalem,	9 Al loro fianco restaurò Refaia, figlio di Cur, capo di metà del distretto di Gerusalemme.
10 and at his side was Jedaiah, son of Harumaph, who repaired opposite his own house. Next to him Hattush, son of Hashabneiah, carried out the work of repair.	10 Al suo fianco restaurò Iedaiah, figlio di Carumaf, dirimpetto alla propria casa. Vicino a lui restaurò Cattus, figlio di Casabnià.
11 The adjoining sector, as far as the Oven Tower, was repaired by Malchijah, son of Harim, and Hasshub, of Pahath-moab.	11 Malachia, figlio di Carim, e Cassùb, figlio di Pacat-Moab, restaurarono il tratto seguente e la torre dei Forni.
12 At their side the work of repair was carried out by Shallum, son of Hallohesh, leader of half the district of Jerusalem, by himself and his daughters.	12 Al loro fianco Sallùm, figlio di Allòches, capo di metà del distretto di Gerusalemme, lavorò alle riparazioni con le sue figlie.
13 The Valley Gate was repaired by Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah; they rebuilt it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars. They also repaired a thousand cubits of the wall up to the Dung Gate.	13 Ripararono la porta della Valle Canùn e gli abitanti di Zanòach. 14 The Dung Gate was repaired by Malchijah, son of Rechab, leader of the district of Beth-haccherem; he rebuilt it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.	14 Malachia, figlio di Recàb, capo del distretto di Bet-Kerem, riparò la porta del Letame; la ricostruì, vi mise i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre.
15 The Spring Gate was repaired by Shallum, son of Colhozeh, leader of the district of Mizpah; he rebuilt it, roofed it over, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars. He also repaired the wall of the Aqueduct Pool near the king's garden as far as the steps that lead down from the City of David.	15 La porta della Sorgente la restaurò Sallùn, figlio di Col-Coze, capo del distretto di Mizpà. Egli la costruì, la ricoperse, vi pose i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre. Ricostruì inoltre il muro della cisterna di Siloe, presso il giardino del re, fino ai gradini che scendono dalla Città di Davide.
16 After him, the work of repair was carried out by Nehemiah, son of Azbuk, leader of half the district of Beth-zur, to a place opposite the tombs of David, as far as the artificial pool and the barracks.	16 Dopo di lui Neemia, figlio di Azbuk, capo di metà del distretto di Bet-Zur, lavorò alle riparazioni dirimpetto ai sepolcri di Davide, fino alla cisterna artificiale e fino alla casa dei Prodi.
17 After him, the Levites carried out the work of repair: Rehum, son of Bani. Next to him, for his own district, was Hashabiah, leader of half the district of Keilah.	17 Dopo di lui restaurarono i leviti: Recum, figlio di Bani, e vicino a lui Casabià, capo di metà del distretto di Keilà, per il suo distretto.
18 After him, their brethren carried out the work of repair: Binnui, son of Henadad, leader of half the district of Keilah;	18 Dopo di essi lavorarono alle riparazioni i loro fratelli: Binnui, figlio di Chenadàd, capo dell'altra metà del distretto di Keilà.
19 next to him Ezer, son of Jeshua, leader of Mizpah, who repaired the adjoining sector, the Corner, opposite the ascent to the arsenal.	19 Accanto a lui Ezer, figlio di Giosuè, capo di Mizpà, riparò un altro settore, di fronte alla salita dell'arsenale, verso l'angolo.
20 After him, Baruch, son of Zabbai, repaired the adjoining sector from the Corner to the entrance of the house of Eliashib, the high priest.	20 Dopo di lui Baruch, figlio di Zaccai, restaurò un altro settore, dall'angolo fino all'ingresso della casa del sommo sacerdote Eliasib.
21 After him, Meremoth, son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, repaired the adjoining sector from the entrance of Eliashib's house to the end of the house.	21 Meremòt, figlio di Uria, figlio di Hakkoz, restaurò, dopo di lui, un altro settore, dall'ingresso della casa di Eliasib sino alla fine di essa.
22 After him, the work of repair was carried out by the priests, men of the surrounding country.	22 Dopo di lui lavorarono alle riparazioni i sacerdoti, abitanti delle adiacenze.
23 After them, Benjamin and Hasshub carried out the repair in front of their houses; after them, Azariah, son of Maaseiah, son of Ananiah, made the repairs alongside his house.	23 Dopo di loro restaurarono Beniamino e Cassùb, dirimpetto alle loro case. Dopo di essi Azaria, figlio di Maaseia, figlio di Anania, lavorò alle riparazioni presso la sua casa.
24 After him, Binnui, son of Henadad, repaired the adjoining sector from the house of Azariah to the Corner (that is, to the Angle).	24 Binnui, figlio di Chenadàd, riparò dopo di lui un altro settore, dalla casa di Azaria fino alla curva, cioè all'angolo.
25 After him, Palal, son of Uzai, carried out the work of repair opposite the Corner and the tower projecting from the Upper Palace at the quarters of the guard. After him, Pedaiah, son of Parosh, carried out the work of repair	25 Palal, figlio di Uzai, lavorò dirimpetto all'angolo e alla torre che sporge dalla casa superiore del re, che dà sul cortile della prigione; dopo di lui lavorò Pedaia, figlio di Pareos.
26 to a point opposite the Water Gate on the east, and the projecting tower.	26 Gli oblati, che abitavano l'Ofel, restaurarono fin dirimpetto alla porta delle Acque, verso oriente, e di fronte alla torre sporgente.
27 After him, the Tekoites repaired the adjoining sector opposite the great projecting tower, to the wall of Ophel (the temple slaves were dwelling on Ophel).	27 Dopo di essi quelli di Tekòa restaurarono un altro settore, di fronte alla grande torre sporgente e fino al muro dell'Ofel.
28 Above the Horse Gate the priests carried out the work of repair, each before his own house.	28 Al di sopra della porta dei Cavalli, i sacerdoti lavorarono alle riparazioni, ciascuno di fronte alla propria casa.
29 After them Zadok, son of Immer, carried out the repair before his house, and after him the repair was carried out by Shemaiah, son of Shecaniah, keeper of the East Gate.	29 Zadòk, figlio di Immer, restaurò dopo di loro, di fronte alla propria casa. E dopo di lui restaurò Semaia, figlio di Secania, custode della porta orientale.
30 After him, Hananiah, son of Shelemiah, and Hanun, the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired the adjoining sector; after them, Meshullam, son of Berechiah, repaired the place opposite his own lodging.	30 Dopo di questi Anania, figlio di Selemia, e Canùn, sesto figlio di Zalaf, ripararono un altro settore. Dopo di loro Mesullàm, figlio di Berechia, restaurò di fronte alla sua camera.
31 After him, Malchijah, a member of the goldsmiths' guild, carried out the work of repair as far as the quarters of the temple slaves and the merchants, before the Gate of Inspection and as far as the upper chamber of the Angle.	31 Malchia, uno degli orefici, restaurò dopo di lui sino alla casa degli oblati e dei mercanti, dirimpetto alla porta della Rassegna e fino alla sala alta dell'angolo.
32 Between the upper chamber of the Angle and the Sheep Gate, the goldsmiths and the merchants carried out the work of repair.	32 Tra la sala alta dell'angolo e la porta delle Pecore lavorarono alle riparazioni gli orefici e i mercanti.
33 When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, it roused his anger and he became very much incensed. He ridiculed the Jews,	33 Quando Sanballàt venne a sapere che noi edificavamo le mura, s'indignò e si adirò terribilmente. Prese a schernire i Giudei,
34 saying in the presence of his brethren and the troops of Samaria: "What are these miserable Jews trying to do? Will they complete their restoration in a single day? Will they recover these stones, burnt as they are, from the heaps of dust?"	34 gridando davanti ai suoi fratelli e ai soldati di Samaria: "Che cosa stanno facendo questi miserabili Giudei? Saranno forse lasciati agire? Offriranno sacrifici e finiranno in un giorno solo? Faranno forse rivivere dai mucchi di polvere le pietre già bruciate dal fuoco?".
35 Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said: "It is a rubble heap they are building. Any fox that attacked it would breach their wall of stones!"	35 Tobia, l'ammonita, che gli stava a fianco, esclamò: "Costruiscano pure! Ma se uno sciacallo si lancerà contro, rovescerà il loro muro di pietra!".
36 Take note, O our God, how we were mocked! Turn back their derision upon their own heads and let them be carried away to a land of captivity!	36 Ascolta, o nostro Dio, perché siamo oggetto di scherno! Fa' ricadere sul loro capo il loro vituperio e abbandonali alla derisione in una terra di schiavitù!
37 Hide not their crime and let not their sin be blotted out in your sight, for they insulted the builders to their face!	37 Non nascondere la loro iniquità e il loro peccato non sia cancellato dal tuo cospetto; giacché essi hanno pronunciato insulti in faccia ai costruttori.
38 We, however, continued to build the wall, which was soon filled in and completed up to half its height. The people worked with a will.	38 Orbene, noi ricostruimmo le mura, completandole totalmente fino a mezza altezza. La volontà del popolo era di agire.
