1 Eliashib the high priest and his priestly brethren took up the task of rebuilding the Sheep Gate. They timbered it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars, then continued the rebuilding to the Tower of Hananel.	1 Eliasìb, sommo sacerdote, con i suoi fratelli sacerdoti si misero a costruire la porta delle Pecore. La consacrarono e vi misero i battenti; la consacrarono fino alla torre dei Cento e fino alla torre di Cananèl.
2 At their side the men of Jericho were rebuilding, and next to them was Zaccur, son of Imri.	2 Accanto a lui costruirono gli uomini di Gerico e accanto a lui costruì Zaccur, figlio di Imrì.
3 The Fish Gate was rebuilt by the sons of Hassenaah; they timbered it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.	3 I figli di Senaà costruirono la porta dei Pesci, la munirono di travi e vi posero i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre.
4 At their side Meremoth, son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, carried out the work of repair; next to him was Meshullam, son of Berechiah, son of Meshezabel; and next to him was Zadok, son of Baana.	4 Accanto a loro lavorò al restauro Meremòt, figlio di Uria, figlio di Akkos; accanto a loro lavorò al restauro Mesullàm, figlio di Berechia, figlio di Mesezabèl; accanto a loro lavorò al restauro Sadoc, figlio di Baanà.
5 Next to him the Tekoites carried out the work of repair; however, some of their outstanding men would not submit to the labor asked by their lords.	5 Accanto a loro lavorarono al restauro quelli di Tekòa, ma i loro notabili non piegarono il collo a lavorare all’opera del loro Signore.
6 The New City Gate was repaired by Joiada, son of Paseah; and Meshullam, son of Besodeiah; they timbered it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.	6 Ioiadà, figlio di Pasèach, e Mesullàm, figlio di Besodia, restaurarono la porta Vecchia, la munirono di travi e vi posero i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre.
7 At their side were Melatiah the Gibeonite, Jadon the Meronothite, and the men of Gibeon and of Mizpah, who were under the jurisdiction of the governor of West-of-Euphrates.	7 Accanto a loro lavorarono al restauro Melatia di Gàbaon, Iadon di Meronòt e gli uomini di Gàbaon e di Mispa, alle dipendenze della sede del governatore dell’Oltrefiume.
8 Next to them the work of repair was carried out by Uzziel, son of Harhaiah, a member of the goldsmiths' guild, and at his side was Hananiah, one of the perfumers' guild. They restored Jerusalem as far as the wall of the public square.	8 Accanto a loro lavorò al restauro Uzzièl, figlio di Caraià, uno degli orefici, e accanto a lui lavorò al restauro Anania, uno dei profumieri. Essi ricostruirono Gerusalemme fino al muro largo.
9 Next to them the work of repair was carried out by Rephaiah, son of Hur, leader of half the district of Jerusalem,	9 Accanto a loro lavorò al restauro Refaià, figlio di Cur, capo della metà del distretto di Gerusalemme.
10 and at his side was Jedaiah, son of Harumaph, who repaired opposite his own house. Next to him Hattush, son of Hashabneiah, carried out the work of repair.	10 Accanto a loro lavorò al restauro, di fronte alla sua casa, Iedaià, figlio di Carumàf, e accanto a lui lavorò al restauro Cattus, figlio di Casabnia.
11 The adjoining sector, as far as the Oven Tower, was repaired by Malchijah, son of Harim, and Hasshub, of Pahath-moab.	11 Malchia, figlio di Carim, e Cassub, figlio di Pacat-Moab, restaurarono la parte seguente e la torre dei Forni.
12 At their side the work of repair was carried out by Shallum, son of Hallohesh, leader of half the district of Jerusalem, by himself and his daughters.	12 Accanto a loro lavorò al restauro, insieme con le figlie, Sallum, figlio di Allochès, capo della metà del distretto di Gerusalemme.
13 The Valley Gate was repaired by Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah; they rebuilt it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars. They also repaired a thousand cubits of the wall up to the Dung Gate.	13 Canun e gli abitanti di Zanòach restaurarono la porta della Valle; la costruirono, vi posero i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre. Fecero inoltre mille cubiti di muro fino alla porta del Letame.
14 The Dung Gate was repaired by Malchijah, son of Rechab, leader of the district of Beth-haccherem; he rebuilt it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.	14 Malchia, figlio di Recab, capo del distretto di Bet-Cherem, restaurò la porta del Letame; la costruì, vi pose i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre.
15 The Spring Gate was repaired by Shallum, son of Colhozeh, leader of the district of Mizpah; he rebuilt it, roofed it over, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars. He also repaired the wall of the Aqueduct Pool near the king's garden as far as the steps that lead down from the City of David.	15 Sallum, figlio di Col-Cozè, preposto del distretto di Mispa, restaurò la porta della Fonte; la ricostruì, la munì di tetto, vi pose i battenti, le serrature e le sbarre. Fece inoltre il muro della piscina di Sìloe, presso il giardino del re, fino alla scalinata per cui si scende dalla Città di Davide.
16 After him, the work of repair was carried out by Nehemiah, son of Azbuk, leader of half the district of Beth-zur, to a place opposite the tombs of David, as far as the artificial pool and the barracks.	16 Dopo di lui Neemia, figlio di Azbuk, preposto della metà del distretto di Bet-Sur, lavorò al restauro fin davanti alle tombe di Davide, fino alla piscina artificiale e fino alla casa dei prodi.
17 After him, the Levites carried out the work of repair: Rehum, son of Bani. Next to him, for his own district, was Hashabiah, leader of half the district of Keilah.	17 Dopo di lui lavorarono al restauro i leviti, con Recum, figlio di Banì, e accanto a lui lavorò al restauro, per il suo distretto, Casabia, preposto della metà del distretto di Keila.
18 After him, their brethren carried out the work of repair: Binnui, son of Henadad, leader of half the district of Keilah;	18 Dopo di lui lavorarono al restauro i loro fratelli, Binnùi, figlio di Chenadàd, preposto dell’altra metà del distretto di Keila.
19 next to him Ezer, son of Jeshua, leader of Mizpah, who repaired the adjoining sector, the Corner, opposite the ascent to the arsenal.	19 Accanto a lui Ezer, figlio di Giosuè, preposto di Mispa, restaurò un’altra parte, di fronte alla salita dell’arsenale, sul Cantone.
20 After him, Baruch, son of Zabbai, repaired the adjoining sector from the Corner to the entrance of the house of Eliashib, the high priest.	20 Dopo di lui Baruc, figlio di Zabbài, restaurò con impegno un’altra parte, dal Cantone fino alla porta della casa di Eliasìb, sommo sacerdote.
21 After him, Meremoth, son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, repaired the adjoining sector from the entrance of Eliashib's house to the end of the house.	21 Dopo di lui Meremòt, figlio di Uria, figlio di Akkos, restaurò un’altra parte, dalla porta della casa di Eliasìb fino all’estremità della casa di Eliasìb.
22 After him, the work of repair was carried out by the priests, men of the surrounding country.	22 Dopo di lui lavorarono al restauro i sacerdoti che abitavano la periferia.
23 After them, Benjamin and Hasshub carried out the repair in front of their houses; after them, Azariah, son of Maaseiah, son of Ananiah, made the repairs alongside his house.	23 Dopo di loro Beniamino e Cassub lavorarono al restauro di fronte alla loro casa. Dopo di loro Azaria, figlio di Maasia, figlio di Anania, lavorò al restauro presso la sua casa.
24 After him, Binnui, son of Henadad, repaired the adjoining sector from the house of Azariah to the Corner (that is, to the Angle).	24 Dopo di lui Binnùi, figlio di Chenadàd, restaurò un’altra parte delle mura, dalla casa di Azaria fino al Cantone e fino all’angolo.
25 After him, Palal, son of Uzai, carried out the work of repair opposite the Corner and the tower projecting from the Upper Palace at the quarters of the guard. After him, Pedaiah, son of Parosh, carried out the work of repair	25 Palal, figlio di Uzài, lavorò al restauro di fronte al Cantone e alla torre sporgente dalla parte superiore della reggia, che dà sul cortile della prigione. 26 to a point opposite the Water Gate on the east, and the projecting tower.	26 e gli oblati che abitavano sull’Ofel lavorarono al restauro fin davanti alla porta delle Acque, verso oriente, e alla torre sporgente.
27 After him, the Tekoites repaired the adjoining sector opposite the great projecting tower, to the wall of Ophel (the temple slaves were dwelling on Ophel).	27 Dopo di loro quelli di Tekòa restaurarono un’altra parte, di fronte alla grande torre sporgente e fino al muro dell’Ofel.
28 Above the Horse Gate the priests carried out the work of repair, each before his own house.	28 I sacerdoti lavorarono al restauro sopra la porta dei Cavalli, ciascuno di fronte alla propria casa.
29 After them Zadok, son of Immer, carried out the repair before his house, and after him the repair was carried out by Shemaiah, son of Shecaniah, keeper of the East Gate.	29 Dopo di loro lavorò al restauro Sadoc, figlio di Immer, di fronte alla sua casa, e dopo di lui Semaià, figlio di Secania, custode della porta Orientale.
30 After him, Hananiah, son of Shelemiah, and Hanun, the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired the adjoining sector; after them, Meshullam, son of Berechiah, repaired the place opposite his own lodging.	30 Dopo di lui Anania, figlio di Selemia, e Canun, sesto figlio di Salaf, restaurarono un’altra parte. Dopo di loro Mesullàm, figlio di Berechia, lavorò al restauro di fronte alla propria stanza.
31 After him, Malchijah, a member of the goldsmiths' guild, carried out the work of repair as far as the quarters of the temple slaves and the merchants, before the Gate of Inspection and as far as the upper chamber of the Angle.	31 Dopo di lui Malchia, uno degli orefici, lavorò al restauro fino alla casa degli oblati e dei mercanti, di fronte alla porta della Rassegna e fino al vano superiore dell’angolo.
32 Between the upper chamber of the Angle and the Sheep Gate, the goldsmiths and the merchants carried out the work of repair.	32 Gli orefici e i mercanti lavorarono al restauro fra il vano superiore dell’angolo e la porta delle Pecore.
33 When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, it roused his anger and he became very much incensed. He ridiculed the Jews,	33 Sanballàt, quando sentì che noi riedificavamo le mura, si adirò, si indignò molto, si fece beffe dei Giudei
34 saying in the presence of his brethren and the troops of Samaria: "What are these miserable Jews trying to do? Will they complete their restoration in a single day? Will they recover these stones, burnt as they are, from the heaps of dust?"	34 e disse in presenza dei suoi fratelli e dei soldati di Samaria: «Che vogliono fare questi miserabili Giudei? Dobbiamo lasciarli fare? Offriranno sacrifici? Finiranno in un sol giorno? Vogliono far rivivere da mucchi di polvere delle pietre già consumate dal fuoco?».
35 Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said: "It is a rubble heap they are building. Any fox that attacked it would breach their wall of stones!"	35 Tobia l’Ammonita, che gli stava accanto, disse: «Edifichino pure! Se una volpe vi salta sopra, farà crollare il loro muro di pietra!».
36 Take note, O our God, how we were mocked! Turn back their derision upon their own heads and let them be carried away to a land of captivity!	36 Ascolta, o nostro Dio, come siamo disprezzati! Fa’ ricadere sul loro capo l’insulto e abbandonali al saccheggio in un paese di schiavitù!
37 Hide not their crime and let not their sin be blotted out in your sight, for they insulted the builders to their face!	37 Non coprire la loro colpa e non sia cancellato dalla tua vista il loro peccato, perché hanno offeso i costruttori.
38 We, however, continued to build the wall, which was soon filled in and completed up to half its height. The people worked with a will.	38 Noi dunque ricostruimmo le mura, che furono ben consolidate fino a metà altezza, e al popolo stava a cuore il lavoro.
