NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, which had been pointed out to his father David, on the spot which David had selected, the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.1 Et cœpit Salomon ædificare domum Domini in Jerusalem in monte Moria, qui demonstratus fuerat David patri ejus, in loco quem paraverat David in area Ornan Jebusæi.
He began to build in the second month of the fourth year of his reign.2 Cœpit autem ædificare mense secundo, anno quarto regni sui.
These were the specifications laid down by Solomon for building the house of God: the length was sixty cubits according to the old measure, and the width was twenty cubits;3 Et hæc sunt fundamenta quæ jecit Salomon, ut ædificaret domum Dei : longitudinis cubitos in mensura prima sexaginta, latitudinis cubitos viginti.
the porch which lay before the nave along the width of the house was also twenty cubits, and it was twenty cubits high. He overlaid its interior with pure gold.4 Porticum vero ante frontem, quæ tendebatur in longum juxta mensuram latitudinis domus, cubitorum viginti : porro altitudo centum viginti cubitorum erat : et deauravit eam intrinsecus auro mundissimo.
The nave he overlaid with cypress wood which he covered with fine gold, embossing on it palms and chains.5 Domum quoque majorem texit tabulis ligneis abiegnis, et laminas auri obrizi affixit per totum : sculpsitque in ea palmas, et quasi catenulas se invicem complectentes.
He also decorated the building with precious stones.6 Stravit quoque pavimentum templi pretiosissimo marmore, decore multo.
The house, its beams and thresholds, as well as its walls and its doors, he overlaid with gold, and he engraved cherubim upon the walls. (The gold was from Parvaim.)7 Porro aurum erat probatissimum, de cujus laminis texit domum, et trabes ejus, et postes, et parietes, et ostia : et cælavit cherubim in parietibus.
He also made the room of the holy of holies. Its length corresponded to the width of the house, twenty cubits, and its width was also twenty cubits. He overlaid it with fine gold to the amount of six hundred talents.8 Fecit quoque domum Sancti sanctorum : longitudinem juxta latitudinem domus cubitorum viginti : et latitudinem similiter viginti cubitorum : et laminis aureis texit eam, quasi talentis sexcentis.
The weight of the nails was fifty gold shekels. The upper chambers he likewise covered with gold.9 Sed et clavos fecit aureos, ita ut singuli clavi siclos quinquagenos appenderent : cœnacula quoque texit auro.
For the room of the holy of holies he made two cherubim of carved workmanship, which were then overlaid with gold.10 Fecit etiam in domo Sancti sanctorum cherubim duos, opere statuario : et texit eos auro.
The wings of the cherubim spanned twenty cubits:11 Alæ cherubim viginti cubitis extendebantur, ita ut una ala haberet cubitos quinque et tangeret parietem domus : et altera quinque cubitos habens, alam tangeret alterius cherub.
one wing of each cherub, five cubits in length, extended to a wall of the building, while the other wing, also five cubits in length, touched the corresponding wing of the second cherub.12 Similiter cherub alterius ala, quinque habebat cubitos, et tangebat parietem : et ala ejus altera quinque cubitorum, alam cherub alterius contingebat.
The combined wingspread of the two cherubim was thus twenty cubits. They stood upon their own feet, facing toward the nave.13 Igitur alæ utriusque cherubim expansæ erant et extendebantur per cubitos viginti : ipsi autem stabant erectis pedibus, et facies eorum erant versæ ad exteriorem domum.
He made the veil of violet, purple, crimson and fine linen, and had cherubim embroidered upon it.14 Fecit quoque velum ex hyacintho, purpura, cocco, et bysso : et intexuit ei cherubim.
In front of the building he set two columns thirty-five cubits high; the capital topping each was of five cubits.15 Ante fores etiam templi duas columnas, quæ triginta et quinque cubitos habebant altitudinis : porro capita earum, quinque cubitorum.
He worked out chains in the form of a collar with which he encircled the capitals of the columns, and he made a hundred pomegranates which he set on the chains.16 Necnon et quasi catenulas in oraculo, et superposuit eas capitibus columnarum : malogranata etiam centum, quæ catenulis interposuit.
He set up the columns to correspond with the nave, one for the right side and the other for the left, and he called the one to the right Jachin and the one to the left Boaz.17 Ipsas quoque columnas posuit in vestibulo templi, unam a dextris, et alteram a sinistris : eam quæ a dextris erat, vocavit Jachin : et quæ ad lævam, Booz.
