1 Ben-hadad, king of Aram, gathered all his forces, and accompanied by thirty-two kings with horses and chariotry, proceeded to invest and attack Samaria.	1 Ben Hadad, rey de Aram, reunió todo su ejército. Tenía consigo 32 reyes, caballos y carros. Subió y puso sitio a Samaría y la atacó.
2 He sent couriers to Ahab, king of Israel, within the city,	2 Envió mensajeros a la ciudad, a Ajab, rey de Israel,
3 and said to him, "This is Ben-hadad's message: 'Your silver and gold are mine, and your wives and your promising sons are mine.'"	3 para decirle: «Así habla Ben Hadad: Tu plata y tu oro son para mí. Tus mujeres y tus hijos para ti».
4 The king of Israel answered, "As you say, my lord king, I and all I have are yours."	4 El rey de Israel respondió: «Como tú dices, rey mi señor, tuyo soy yo y todo lo mío».
5 But the couriers came again and said, "This is Ben-hadad's message: 'I sent you word to give me your silver and gold, your wives and your sons.	5 Volvieron los mensajeros y dijeron: «Así habla Ben Hadad: Envío a decirte: Me darás tu plata, tu oro, tus mujeres y tus hijos.
6 Now, however, at this time tomorrow I will send my servants to you, and they shall ransack your house and the houses of your servants. They shall seize and take away whatever they consider valuable.'"	6 Así que mañana a estas horas te enviaré mis siervos y registrarán tu casa y las casas de tus siervos, y echarán mano a cuanto les guste, y se lo llevarán».
7 The king of Israel then summoned all the elders of the land and said: "Understand clearly that this man wants to ruin us. When he sent to me for my wives and sons, my silver and my gold, I did not refuse him."	7 Convocó el rey de Israel a todos los ancianos de la tierra y les dijo: «Reconoced y ved que éste busca hacer el mal. Me pide mis mujeres y mis hijos a pesar de que no le he negado mi plata y mi oro».
8 All the elders and all the people said to him, "Do not listen. Do not give in."	8 Todos los ancianos y todo el pueblo dijeron: «No le escuches, no consientas».
9 Accordingly he directed the couriers of Ben-hadad, "Say to my lord the king, 'I will do all that you demanded of your servant the first time. But this I cannot do.'" The couriers left and reported this.	9 Dijo a los enviados de Ben Hadad: «Decid a mi señor el rey: Todo lo que mandaste la primera vez a tu siervo, lo haré; pero esto no puedo hacerlo». Se fueron los mensajeros llevando la respuesta.
10 Ben-hadad then sent him the message, "May the gods do thus and so to me if there is enough dust in Samaria to make handfuls for all my followers."	10 Entonces, Ben Hadad envió a decir: «Esto me hagan los dioses y esto me añadan si hay bastante polvo en Samaría para los puños de todo el pueblo que me sigue».
11 The king of Israel replied, "Tell him, 'It is not for the man who is buckling his armor to boast as though he were taking it off.'"	11 El rey de Israel respondió: «Decid: No se alabe quien se ciñe como el que se desciñe».
12 Ben-hadad was drinking in the pavilions with the kings when he heard this reply. "Prepare the assault," he commanded his servants; and they made ready to storm the city.	12 Cuando Ben Hadad escuchó esta palabra, estaba bebiendo con los reyes en la tienda, y dijo a sus servidores: «Tomad posiciones». Y tomaron posiciones contra la ciudad.
13 Then a prophet came up to Ahab, king of Israel and said: "The LORD says, 'Do you see all this huge army? When I deliver it up to you today, you will know that I am the LORD.'"	13 Se acercó a Ajab, rey de Israel, un profeta y le dijo: «Así habla Yahveh: ¿Has visto esta gran multitud? Hoy la entrego en tus manos y sabrás que yo soy Yahveh».
14 But Ahab asked, "Through whom will it be delivered up?" He answered, "The LORD says, 'Through the retainers of the governors of the provinces.'" Then Ahab asked, "Who is to attack?" He replied, "You are."	14 «Ajab dijo: «¿Por medio de quién?» Respondió: «Así dice Yahveh: Por medio de los jóvenes de los jefes de distritos». Preguntó Ajab: «¿Quién debe entablar el combate?» Respondió: «Tú».
15 So Ahab called up the retainers of the governors of the provinces, two hundred thirty-two of them. Behind them he mustered all the Israelite soldiery, who numbered seven thousand.	15 Pasó revista a los jóvenes de los jefes de distritos, que eran 232; después de ellos, pasó revista a todo el pueblo, todos los israelitas, 7.000.
16 They marched out at noon, while Ben-hadad was drinking heavily in the pavilions with the thirty-two kings who were his allies.	16 Hicieron una salida a mediodía, mientras Ben Hadad estaba bebiendo hasta la imbriaguez en sus tiendas con los 32 reyes auxiliares.
17 When the retainers of the governors of the provinces marched out first, Ben-hadad received word that some men had marched out of Samaria.	17 Salieron en cabeza los jóvenes de los jefes de distritos. Enviaron a avisar a Ben Hadad: «Han salido algunos jóvenes de Samaría».
18 He answered, "Whether they have come out for peace or for war, in any case take them alive."	18 El respondió: «Si han salido en son de paz, prendedles vivos; si han salido en son de guerra, prendedles vivos».
19 But when these had come out of the city-the soldiers of the governors of the provinces with the army following them--	19 Salieron, pues, de la ciudad aquellos jóvenes de los jefes de los distritos y el ejército detrás de ellos.
20 each of them struck down his man. The Arameans fled with Israel pursuing them, while Ben-hadad, king of Aram, escaped on a chariot steed.	20 Abatió cada uno a su hombre. Aram se dio a la fuga e Israel le persiguió. Ben Hadad, rey de Aram, pudo salvarse a caballo con algunos jinetes.
21 The king of Israel went out, took the horses and chariots, and inflicted a severe defeat on Aram.	21 Salió el rey de Israel y se apoderó de los caballos y carros, infligiendo a Aram una gran derrota.
22 Then the prophet went up to the king of Israel and said to him: "Go, regroup your forces. Mark well what you do, for at the beginning of the year the king of Aram will attack you."	22 Se acercó el profeta al rey de Israel y dijo: «Anda, cobra ánimo, y conoce y mira lo que has de hacer, porque el año que viene el rey de Aram subirá contra ti».
23 On the other hand, the servants of the king of Aram said to him: "Their gods are gods of mountains. That is why they defeated us. But if we fight them on level ground, we shall be sure to defeat them.	23 Los servidores del rey de Aram le dijeron: «Su Dios es un Dios de las montañas; por eso fueron más fuertes que nosotros. Pero atacaremos en la llanura y ¿no seremos más fuertes que ellos?
24 This is what you must do: Take the kings from their posts and put prefects in their places.	24 Haz esto: quita de su puesto a cada uno de los reyes, y pon gobernadores en su lugar.
25 Mobilize an army as large as the army that has deserted you, horse for horse, chariot for chariot. Let us fight them on level ground, and we shall surely defeat them." He took their advice and did this.	25 Por tu parte, recluta un ejército como el ejército que perdiste, con otros tantos caballos y carros, y les atacaremos en la llanura. ¿No seremos más fuertes que ellos?» Escuchó su voz e hizo así.
26 At the beginning of the year, Ben-hadad mobilized Aram and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.	26 A la vuelta del año, Ben Hadad pasó revista a los arameos y subió a Afeq para luchar contra Israel.
27 The Israelites, too, were called to arms and supplied with provisions; then they went out to engage the foe. The Israelites, encamped opposite them, seemed like a couple of small flocks of goats, while Aram covered the countryside.	27 Se pasó revista a los israelitas que fueron provistos de vituallas y marcharon a su encuentro. Los israelitas acamparon frente a ellos como dos rebaños de cabras, mientras que los arameos llenaban la tierra.
28 A man of God came up and said to the king of Israel: "The LORD says, 'Because Aram has said the LORD is a god of mountains, not a god of plains, I will deliver up to you all this large army, that you may know I am the LORD.'"	28 El hombre de Dios se acercó al rey de Israel y dijo: «Así habla Yahveh: Por haber dicho los arameos: Yahveh es un Dios de la montaña, no es Dios de las llanuras, voy a entregar toda esta gran muchedumbre en tus manos y sabrás que yo soy Yahveh».
29 They were encamped opposite each other for seven days. On the seventh day battle was joined, and the Israelites struck down one hundred thousand foot soldiers of Aram in one day.	29 Acamparon frente a frente durante siete días y el séptimo día trabaron batalla. Los israelitas batieron a los arameos, 100.000 infantes en un día.
30 The survivors, twenty-seven thousand of them, fled into the city of Aphek, and there the wall collapsed. Ben-hadad, too, fled, and took refuge within the city, in an inside room.	30 Los restantes huyeron a la ciudad de Afeq, pero la muralla se desplomó sobres los 27.000 hombres que quedaban. Ben Hadad había huido y se había refugiado en la ciudad, en una habitación retirada.
31 His servants said to him: "We have heard that the kings of the land of Israel are merciful kings. Allow us, therefore, to garb ourselves in sackcloth, with cords around our heads, and go out to the king of Israel. Perhaps he will spare your life."	31 Sus servidores le dijeron: «Hemos oído que los reyes de la casa de Israel son reyes misericordiosos. Deja que nos pongamos sayales sobre nuestros lomos y cuerdas en nuestras cabezas y salgamos hacia el rey de Israel. Acaso te deje la vida».
32 So they dressed in sackcloth girded at the waist, and wearing cords around their heads, they went to the king of Israel. "Your servant Ben-hadad pleads for his life," they said. "Is he still alive?" the king asked. "He is my brother."	32 Se ciñeron sayales a sus lomos y cuerdas sobre sus cabezas y fueron al rey de Israel y le dijeron: «Tu siervo Ben Hadad dice: Que pueda yo conservar mi vida». El respondió: «¿Vive aún? ¡Es mi hermano!»
33 Hearing this as a good omen, the men quickly took him at his word and said, "Ben-hadad is your brother." He answered, "Go and get him." When Ben-hadad came out to him, the king had him mount his chariot.	33 Los hombres lo tomaron como buen augurio y se apresuraron a tomarle la palabra diciendo: «Hermano tuyo es Ben Hadad». El dijo: «Id a traerlo». Ben Hadad salió hacia él, y él le hizo subir a su carro.
34 Ben-hadad said to him, "I will restore the cities which my father took from your father, and you may make yourself bazaars in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria." "On these terms," Ahab replied, "I will set you free." So he made an agreement with him and then set him free.	34 Ben Hadad le dijo: «Devolveré las ciudades que mi padre tomó a tu padre; y tú pondrás bazares para ti en Damasco, como mi padre puso en Samaría». - «Con este pacto te dejaré libre». Hizo un pacto con él y le dejó libre.
35 One of the guild prophets was prompted by the LORD to say to his companion, "Strike me." But he refused to strike him.	35 Un hombre de los hijos de los profetas dijo a su compañero: «Por orden de Yahveh, hiéreme»; pero el hombre no quiso herirle.
36 Then he said to him, "Since you did not obey the voice of the LORD, a lion will kill you when you leave me." When they parted company, a lion came upon him and killed him.	36 Le dijo: «Por no haber escuchado la voz de Yahveh, en cuanto te marches de mi lado, el león te herirá». Se fue de su lado y le encontró al león, que le hirió.
37 The prophet met another man and said, "Strike me." The man struck him a blow and wounded him.	37 Halló a otro hombre y le dijo: «Hiéreme». El hombre le dio un golpe y le hirió.
38 The prophet went on and waited for the king on the road, having disguised himself with a bandage over his eyes.	38 El profeta se fue y se puso a esperar al rey en el camino. Se había disfrazado con una banda sobre los ojos.
39 As the king was passing, he called out to the king and said: "Your servant went into the thick of the battle, and suddenly someone turned and brought me a man and said, 'Guard this man. If he is missing, you shall have to pay for his life with your life or pay out a talent of silver.'	39 Cuando el rey pasaba clamó al rey y dijo: «Tu siervo había llegado al centro de la batalla cuando uno abandonó las filas y me trajo un hombre y me dijo: “Custodia a este hombre; si llega a faltar, tu vida responderá por la suya, o pagarás un talento de plata.”
40 But while your servant was looking here and there, the man disappeared." The king of Israel said to him, "That is your sentence. You have decided it yourself."	40 Pero tu siervo estaba ocupado aquí y allá y éste desapareció». El rey de Israel le dijo: «Esa es tu sentencia. Tú mismo lo has sentenciado».
41 He immediately removed the bandage from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets.	41 El entonces se apresuró a quitarse la banda de los ojos y el rey de Israel le reconoció como uno de los profetas.
42 He said to him: "The LORD says, 'Because you have set free the man I doomed to destruction, your life shall pay for his life, your people for his people.'"	42 Dijo al rey: «Así dice Yahveh: Por haber dejado ir de tus manos al hombre entregado a mi anatema, tu vida pagará por su vida y tu pueblo por su pueblo».
43 Disturbed and angry, the king of Israel went off homeward and entered Samaria.	43 El rey de Israel se fue a su casa triste e irritado, y entró en Samaría.
