1 There followed a long war between the house of Saul and that of David, in which David grew stronger, but the house of Saul weaker.	1 La guerre se prolongea entre la maison de Saül et celle de David. David s’imposait de plus en plus, tandis que le parti de Saül s’effritait.
2 Sons were born to David in Hebron: his first-born, Amnon, of Ahinoam from Jezreel;	2 David eut des fils à Hébron: l’aîné était Amnon, né d’Ahinoam de Yizréel;
3 the second, Chileab, of Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel; the third, Absalom, son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur;	3 le second était Kiléab, né d’Abigayil femme de Nabal de Karmel; le troisième, Absalom fils de Maaka, une fille de Talmaï, roi de Guéchour,
4 the fourth, Adonijah, son of Haggith; the fifth, Shephatiah, son of Abital;	4 le quatrième était Adonias, né de Haggit; le cinquième, Chefatyas, né d’Abital,
5 and the sixth, Ithream, of David's wife Eglah. These were born to David in Hebron.	5 le sixième, Yitréam né d’Égla, femme de David. Tous ces fils de David naquirent à Hébron.
6 During the war between the house of Saul and that of David, Abner was gaining power in the house of Saul.	6 Durant la guerre entre la maison de Saül et la maison de David, Abner prenait de plus en plus d’importance dans la maison de Saül.
7 Now Saul had had a concubine, Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah. And Ishbaal, son of Saul, said to Abner, "Why have you been intimate with my father's concubine?"	7 Saül avait une concubine nommée Rispa, fille d’Ayya, Abner la prit. Ichbaal dit à Abner: “Pourquoi as-tu pris la concubine de mon père?”
8 Enraged at the words of Ishbaal, Abner said, "Am I a dog's head in Judah? At present I am doing a kindness to the house of your father Saul, to his brothers and his friends, by keeping you out of David's clutches; yet this day you charge me with a crime involving a woman!	8 À ces mots Abner entra dans une violente colère contre Ichbaal: “Suis-je donc une tête de chien? Je me suis montré plein d’attentions pour la maison de Saül ton père, pour ses frères et ses amis, je ne t’ai pas laissé entre les mains de David, et aujourd’hui tu me fais une scène pour une histoire de femme?
9 May God do thus and so to Abner if I do not carry out for David what the LORD swore to him--	9 Que Dieu me maudisse et me maudisse encore si je ne réalise pas moi-même ce que Yahvé a promis par serment à David.
10 that is, take away the kingdom from the house of Saul and establish the throne of David over Israel and over Judah from Dan to Beersheba."	10 Il a dit qu’il enlèverait la royauté à la maison de Saül et qu’il ferait David roi d’Israël et de Juda, depuis Dan jusqu’à Bersabée.”
11 In his fear of Abner, Ishbaal was no longer able to say a word to him.	11 Ichbaal n’osa pas répliquer un seul mot à Abner, car il avait peur de lui.
12 Then Abner sent messengers to David in Telam, where he was at the moment, to say, "Make an agreement with me, and I will aid you by bringing all Israel over to you."	12 Abner envoya des messagers à David: “Fais un accord avec moi et je t’aiderai à rassembler autour de toi tout Israël.”
13 He replied, "Very well, I will make an agreement with you. But one thing I require of you. You must not appear before me unless you bring back Michal, Saul's daughter, when you come to present yourself to me."	13 David répondit: “Très bien, je ferai un accord avec toi. Je ne mets qu’une condition: quand tu viendras, tu me ramèneras Mikal, la fille de Saül; sinon il est inutile de te présenter devant moi.”
14 At the same time David sent messengers to Ishbaal, son of Saul, to say, "Give me my wife Michal, whom I espoused by paying a hundred Philistine foreskins."	14 David envoya des messagers à Ichbaal, fils de Saül: “Rends-moi ma femme Mikal qu’on m’a donnée contre 100 prépuces de Philistins.”
15 Ishbaal sent for her and took her away from her husband Paltiel, son of Laish,	15 Alors Ichbaal l’envoya prendre chez son nouveau mari Paltiel, fils de Layich.
16 who followed her weeping as far as Bahurim. But Abner said to him, "Go back!" And he turned back.	16 Son mari partit avec elle et l’accompagna en pleurant jusqu’à Bahourim. Là Abner lui dit: “Retourne chez toi!” Et il s’en retourna.
17 Abner then said in discussion with the elders of Israel: "For a long time you have been seeking David as your king.	17 Abner eut des entretiens avec les anciens d’Israël; il leur dit: “Déjà ces derniers temps vous avez demandé que David règne sur vous.
18 Now take action, for the LORD has said of David, 'By my servant David I will save my people Israel from the grasp of the Philistines and from the grasp of all their enemies.'"	18 Maintenant passez aux actes, car Yahvé a parlé de David en ces termes: Par la main de mon serviteur David, je sauverai mon peuple Israël de la main des Philistins et de tous ses ennemis.”
19 Abner also spoke personally to Benjamin, and then went to make his own report to David in Hebron concerning all that would be agreeable to Israel and to the whole house of Benjamin.	19 Abner parla ainsi aux hommes de Benjamin, puis il alla répéter à David, à Hébron, tout ce que souhaitaient les gens d’Israël et de Benjamin.
20 When Abner, accompanied by twenty men, came to David in Hebron, David prepared a feast for Abner and for the men who were with him.	20 Abner vint trouver David à Hébron avec 20 hommes, et David fit un festin pour Abner et pour les hommes qui l’accompagnaient.
21 Then Abner said to David, "I will now go to assemble all Israel for my lord the king, that they may make an agreement with you; you will then be king over all whom you wish to rule." So David bade Abner farewell, and he went away in peace.	21 Abner dit alors à David: “Maintenant je m’en vais pour rassembler tout Israël autour de mon seigneur le roi; ils feront un pacte avec toi, et tu régneras sur tout ce que tu peux souhaiter. Puis David congédia Abner qui s’en retourna en paix.”
22 Just then David's servants and Joab were coming in from an expedition, bringing much plunder with them. Abner, having been dismissed by David, was no longer with him in Hebron but had gone his way in peace.	22 Or voici que Joab et la garde de David revenaient d’une razzia: ils ramenaient un énorme butin. Abner, lui, avait quitté David à Hébron, David l’avait congédié et il s’en retournait tranquillement.
23 When Joab and the whole force he had with him arrived, he was informed, "Abner, son of Ner, came to David; he has been sent on his way in peace."	23 Lorsque Joab et sa troupe arrivèrent, on avertit Joab qu’Abner, fils de Ner était venu chez le roi et que celui-ci l’avait congédié amicalement.
24 So Joab went to the king and said: "What have you done? Abner came to you. Why did you let him go peacefully on his way?	24 Alors Joab entra chez le roi et lui dit: “Qu’as-tu fait? Abner est venu chez toi et tu l’as laissé partir?
25 Are you not aware that Abner came to deceive you and to learn the ins and outs of all that you are doing?"	25 Tu connais Abner, fils de Ner: il est venu pour te tromper, pour connaître tes faits et gestes et savoir ce que tu prépares.”
26 Joab then left David, and without David's knowledge sent messengers after Abner, who brought him back from the cistern of Sirah.	26 Aussitôt sorti de chez David, et sans le dire à David, Joab envoya des messagers à la citerne de Sira pour faire revenir Abner.
27 When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside within the city gate as though to speak with him privately. There he stabbed him in the abdomen, and he died in revenge for the killing of Joab's brother Asahel.	27 Et quand Abner arriva à Hébron, Joab l’entraîna à l’intérieur de la porte sous prétexte de parler discrètement avec lui; là il le frappa au ventre pour venger le sang de son frère Azaël. Abner mourut.
28 Later David heard of it and said: "Before the LORD; I and my kingdom are forever innocent.	28 David n’apprit la chose qu’ensuite. Il s’écria: “Moi et mon royaume, nous serons pour toujours innocents devant Yahvé du sang d’Abner, fils de Ner.
29 May the full responsibility for the death of Abner, son of Ner, be laid to Joab and to all his family. May the men of Joab's family never be without one suffering from a discharge, or a leper, or one unmanly, one falling by the sword, or one in need of bread!"	29 Que ce sang retombe sur la tête de Joab et sur toute la maison de son père. Qu’il y ait toujours dans la maison de Joab des malades souffrant d’un écoulement ou de lèpre, des hommes bons pour manier le fuseau, des victimes de l’épée, des gens qui manquent de pain!”
30 (Joab and his brother Abishai had lain in wait for Abner because he killed their brother Asahel in battle at Gibeon.)	30 (Joab et son frère Abisaï avaient tué Abner parce qu’il avait frappé à mort leur frère Azaël lors du combat de Gabaon.)
31 Then David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, "Rend your garments, gird yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn over Abner." King David himself followed the bier.	31 David dit ensuite à Joab et à tout le monde qui était autour de lui: “Déchirez vos vêtements, mettez des sacs sur vos reins et faites le deuil pour Abner.” Le roi David marchait derrière le corps.
32 When they had buried Abner in Hebron, the king wept aloud at the grave of Abner, and the people also wept.	32 Pendant l’enterrement à Hébron, le roi éleva la voix et pleura devant la tombe: tout le peuple pleurait avec lui.
33 And the king sang this elegy over Abner: "Would Abner have died like a fool?	33 Le roi entonna alors cette lamentation sur Abner: “Abner devait-il mourir comme un homme de rien?
34 Your hands were not bound with chains, nor your feet placed in fetters; As men fall before the wicked, you fell." And all the people continued to weep for him.	34 Tes mains n’étaient pas liées, tes pieds n’étaient pas serrés dans des chaînes de bronze, mais tu es tombé comme on tombe devant des criminels.” out le peuple se remit à pleurer.
35 Then they went to console David with food while it was still day. But David swore, "May God do thus and so to me if I eat bread or anything else before sunset."	35 Tous insistèrent auprès de David pour qu’il mange pendant qu’il faisait encore jour, mais David fit ce serment: “Que Dieu me maudisse et me maudisse encore si je goûte du pain ou quoi que ce soit avant le coucher du soleil.”
36 All the people noted this with approval, just as they were pleased with everything that the king did.	36 Les gens du peuple furent très impressionnés et trouvèrent cela très bien, d’ailleurs ils trouvaient très bien tout ce que faisait le roi.
37 So on that day all the people and all Israel came to know that the king had no part in the killing of Abner, son of Ner.	37 Ainsi tout le peuple et tout Israël comprirent que ce n’était pas le roi qui avait fait assassiner Abner, fils de Ner.
38 The king then said to his servants: "You must recognize that a great general has fallen today in Israel.	38 Le roi dit à ses serviteurs: “Ne savez-vous pas qu’un chef, un grand chef, est tombé aujourd’hui en Israël?
39 Although I am the anointed king, I am weak this day, and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too ruthless for me. May the LORD requite the evildoer in accordance with his evil deed."	39 Moi, pour l’instant, je ne peux pas grand-chose bien que j’aie reçu la consécration royale; ces hommes, les fils de Sérouya, sont plus durs que moi. Que Yahvé fasse payer le mal à celui qui l’a fait!”
