1 The LORD'S anger against Israel flared again, and he incited David against the Israelites by prompting him to number Israel and Judah.	1 Il furore del Signore s'accese di nuovo contro Israele, ed eccitò David contro di essi, dicendo: «Va a fare il censimento d'Israele e di Giuda ».
2 Accordingly the king said to Joab and the leaders of the army who were with him, "Tour all the tribes in Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba and register the people, that I may know their number."	2 Allora il re disse a Gioab capo del suo esercito: « Percorri tutte le tribù d'Israele da Dan fino a Bersabee, e fate il censimento del popolo, ond'io ne sappia il numero ».
3 But Joab said to the king: "May the LORD your God increase the number of people a hundredfold for your royal majesty to see it with his own eyes. But why does it please my lord the king to order a thing of this kind?"	3 Gioab rispose al re: « Il Signore Dio tuo moltiplichi il tuo popolo oltre quello che è attualmente, e di nuovo lo moltiplichi per cento nel cospetto del re mio signore; ma che vorrebbe fare il re mio signore con questo? »
4 The king, however, overruled Joab and the leaders of the army, so they left the king's presence in order to register the people of Israel.	4 Ma la parola del re prevalse sulle parole di Gioab e dei capi dell'esefcito, e Gioab e i principi dei soldati partirono dalla presenza del re per fare il censimento del popolo d'Israele.
5 Crossing the Jordan, they began near Aroer, south of the city in the wadi, and went in the direction of Gad toward Jazer.	5 Passato il Giordano, andarono ad Aroer, alla destra della città che è nella valle di Gad;
6 They continued on to Gilead and to the district below Mount Hermon. Then they proceeded to Dan; from there they turned toward Sidon,	6 poi per Iazer passarono in Galaad e nel paese inferiore di Odsi, e giunsero nelle foreste di Dan. Giraron poi nei dintorni di Sidone,

8 Thus they toured the whole country, reaching Jerusalem again after nine months and twenty days.	8 Avendo così scorso tutto il paese, tornarono a Gerusalemme dopo nove mesi e venti giorni.
9 Joab then reported to the king the number of people registered: in Israel, eight hundred thousand men fit for military service; in Judah, five hundred thousand.	9 Gioab consegnò al re il censimento del popolo che dava d'Israele ottocento mila uomini forti che potevano maneggiar la spada, e di Giuda cinquecento mila combattenti.
10 Afterward, however, David regretted having numbered the people, and said to the LORD: "I have sinned grievously in what I have done. But now, LORD, forgive the guilt of your servant, for I have been very foolish."	10 Ma David sentì battere il cuore appena fatto il censimento del popolo, e disse al Signore: « Ho molto peccato facendo questo; ma ti prego, o Signore, di togliere l'iniquità del tuo servo, perchè io ho agito con troppa stoltezza ».
11 When David rose in the morning, the LORD had spoken to the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying:	11 Il giorno dopo, quando David si levò la mattina, il Signore parlò a Gad profeta e veggente di David, dicendo:
12 "Go and say to David, 'This is what the LORD says: I offer you three alternatives; choose one of them, and I will inflict it on you.'"	12 « Va a dire a David: Queste cose dice il Signore: Ti è dato di scegliere fra queste tre cose, scegline una, quella che ti pare, ed io te la farò ».
13 Gad then went to David to inform him. He asked: "Do you want a three years' famine to come upon your land, or to flee from your enemy three months while he pursues you, or to have a three days' pestilence in your land? Now consider and decide what I must reply to him who sent me."	13 Gad si presentò a David e gli riferì la cosa, dicendo: « O deve venire per sette anni la fame nel tuo paese, o per tre mesi tu dovrai fuggire i tuoi nemici che ti inseguiranno, o vi dovrà essere una peste di tre giorni nel tuo regno: or dunque delibera e fammi sapere che devo rispondere a colui che m'ha mandato ».
14 David answered Gad: "I am in very serious difficulty. Let us fall by the hand of God, for he is most merciful; but let me not fall by the hand of man."	14 David rispose a Gad: « La mia angoscia è grande; ma è meglio cadere nelle mani del Signore, di cui sono grandi le misericordie, che nelle mani degli uomini ».
15 Thus David chose the pestilence. Now it was the time of the wheat harvest when the plague broke out among the people. (The LORD then sent a pestilence over Israel from morning until the time appointed, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beer-sheba died.)	15 Il Signore mandò in Israele la peste da quella mattina fino al tempo stabilito, e del popolo, da Dan fino a Bersabee, ne morirono settanta mila persone.
16 But when the angel stretched forth his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD regretted the calamity and said to the angel causing the destruction among the people, "Enough now! Stay your hand." The angel of the LORD was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.	16 Quando l'angelo del Signore stese la mano sopra Gerusalemme per desolarla, il Signore si mosse a pietà per tanta sciagura, e disse all'angelo che percoteva il popolo: « Basta! Ora ferma la tua mano ». L'angelo del Signore era presso l'aia di Areuna Gebuseo.
17 When David saw the angel who was striking the people, he said to the LORD: "It is I who have sinned; it is I, the shepherd, who have done wrong. But these are sheep; what have they done? Punish me and my kindred."	17 Quando ebbe veduto l'Angelo che percoteva il popolo, David disse al Signore: « Son io che ho peccato, io che ho agito iniquamente: ma questi, che son le pecore, che han fatto? Si rivolga, ti prego, la tua mano contro di me e contro la casa di mio padre ».
18 On the same day Gad went to David and said to him, "Go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite."	18 In quel giorno Gad andò David e gli disse: « Sali ed erigi un altare al Signore nell'aia di Areuna Gebuseo ».
19 Following Gad's bidding, David went up as the LORD had commanded.	19 David salì secondo la parola di Gad, e l'ordine del Signore.
20 Now Araunah looked down and noticed the king and his servants coming toward him while he was threshing wheat. So he went out and paid homage to the king, with face to the ground.	20 Areuna, avendo alzati gli occhi, visto venire da lui il re e i suoi servi,
21 Then Araunah asked, "Why does my lord the king come to his servant?" David replied, "To buy the threshing floor from you, to build an altar to the LORD, that the plague may be checked among the people."	21 uscito fuori, adorò il re, prostrandosi col volto a terra, e disse: « Perchè mai il re mio signore viene alla casa del suo servo? » David gli disse: « Per comprar la tua aia ed erigervi un altare al Signore, affinchè cessi la mortalità che infierisce nel popolo ».
22 But Araunah said to David: "Let my lord the king take and offer up whatever he may wish. Here are oxen for holocausts, and threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for wood.	22 Areuna rispose a David: « Il re mio signore prenda e offerisca come a lui piace: ecco i buoi per l'olocausto, il carro ed i gioghi dei buoi per il legno:
23 All this does Araunah give to the king." Araunah then said to the king, "May the LORD your God accept your offering."	23 tutto, o re, dona Areuna al re ». Poi Areuna aggiunse: « Il Signore Dio tuo gradisca il tuo voto ».
24 The king, however, replied to Araunah, "No, I must pay you for it, for I cannot offer to the LORD my God holocausts that cost nothing." So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty silver shekels.	24 Ma il re rispose e disse: « Non sarà come vorresti tu; no, io vo' comprare da te a contanti, e non voglio offrire al Signore Dio mio olocausti datimi in dono ». David comprò l'aia ed i buoi per cinquanta sicli d'argento.
25 Then David built an altar there to the LORD, and offered holocausts and peace offerings. The LORD granted relief to the country, and the plague was checked in Israel.	25 Poi David eresse in quel luogo un altare al Signore, e offerse olocausti e ostie pacifiche. Così il Signore tornò propizio alla terra e il flagello cessò in Israele.
