1 Ahithophel went on to say to Absalom: "Please let me choose twelve thousand men, and be off in pursuit of David tonight.	1 Achitophel dit donc à Absalom : Je vais prendre douze mille hommes d'élite, et j'irai poursuivre David cette nuit même ;
2 If I come upon him when he is weary and discouraged, I shall cause him panic. When all the people with him flee, I shall strike down the king alone.	2 et fondant sur lui maintenant qu'il est las et hors de défense, je le battrai. Et lorsque tout le peuple qui est avec lui aura pris la fuite, je frapperai le roi abandonné.
3 Then I can bring back the rest of the people to you, as a bride returns to her husband. It is the death of only one man you are seeking; then all the people will be at peace."	3 (Et) Je ramènerai tout ce peuple comme si ce n'était qu'un seul homme ; car vous ne cherchez qu'une personne, et après cela tout sera en paix.
4 This plan was agreeable to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel.	4 Cet avis plut à Absalom, et à tous les anciens d'Israël.
5 Then Absalom said, "Now call Hushai the Archite also; let us hear what he too has to say."	5 Absalom dit cependant : Faites venir Chusaï d'Arach, afin que nous entendions aussi son avis.
6 When Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom said to him: "This is what Ahithophel proposed. Shall we follow his proposal? If not, speak up."	6 Chusaï étant venu devant Absalom, Absalom lui dit : Voici le conseil qu'Achitophel nous a donné : devons-nous le suivre ? Que nous conseilles-tu ?
7 Hushai replied to Absalom, "This time Ahithophel has not given good counsel."	7 Chusaï répondit à Absalom : Le conseil qu'a donné Achitophel ne me paraît pas bon cette fois.
8 And he went on to say: "You know that your father and his men are warriors, and that they are as fierce as a bear in the wild robbed of her cubs. Moreover, since your father is skilled in warfare, he will not spend the night with the people.	8 Et il ajouta : Vous savez que votre père et les hommes qui sont avec lui sont très vaillants, et qu'ils ont le cœur outré comme une ourse qui est en furie dans un bois, parce qu'on lui a ravi ses petits. Votre père, qui connaît parfaitement la guerre, ne demeurera point avec ses gens.
9 Even now he lies hidden in one of the caves or in some other place. And if some of our soldiers should fall at the first attack, whoever hears of it will say, 'Absalom's followers have been slaughtered.'	9 Il est peut-être maintenant caché dans une caverne, ou dans quelque autre lieu qu'il aura choisi. Si quelqu'un de vos hommes est tué d'abord, on publiera aussitôt partout que le parti d'Absalom a été battu.
10 Then even the brave man with the heart of a lion will lose courage. For all Israel knows that your father is a warrior and that those who are with him are brave.	10 En même temps les plus hardis de ceux qui vous suivent, et qui ont des cœurs de lion, seront saisis d'effroi ; car tout le peuple d'Israël sait que votre père et tous ceux qui sont avec lui sont (très) vaillants.
11 "This is what I counsel: Let all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba, who are as numerous as the sands by the sea, be called up for combat; and go with them yourself.	11 Voici donc, ce me semble, le meilleur (un bon) conseil à suivre : Faites assembler tout Israël, depuis Dan jusqu'à Bersabée, comme le sable de la mer qui est innombrable, et vous serez au milieu d'eux.
12 We can then attack him wherever we find him, settling down upon him as dew alights on the ground. None shall survive--neither he nor any of his followers.	12 Et en quelque lieu qu'il puisse être, nous irons nous jeter sur lui ; nous l'accablerons par notre nombre, comme quand la rosée tombe sur la terre ; et nous ne laisserons pas un seul de tous ceux qui sont avec lui.
13 And if he retires into a city, all Israel shall bring ropes to that city and we can drag it into the gorge, so that not even a pebble of it can be found."	13 Que s'il se retire dans quelque ville, tout Israël en environnera les murailles de cordes, et nous l'entraînerons dans le torrent, sans qu'il en reste seulement une petite pierre.
14 Then Absalom and all the Israelites pronounced the counsel of Hushai the Archite better than that of Ahithophel. For the LORD had decided to undo Ahithophel's good counsel, in order thus to bring Absalom to ruin.	14 Alors Absalom, et tous les principaux d'Israël dirent : L'avis (Le conseil) de Chusaï d'Arach est meilleur que celui d'Achitophel. Mais ce fut par la volonté du Seigneur que le conseil d'Achitophel, qui était le plus utile, fut ainsi détruit, afin que le Seigneur fît tomber Absalom dans le malheur.
15 Then Hushai said to the priests Zadok and Abiathar: "This is the counsel Ahithophel gave Absalom and the elders of Israel, and this is what I counseled.	15 Alors Chusaï dit aux prêtres Sadoc et Abiathar : Voici l'avis qu'Achitophel a donné à Absalom et aux anciens d'Israël ; et voici celui que j'ai donné.
16 So send a warning to David immediately, not to spend the night at the fords near the desert, but to cross over without fail. Otherwise the king and all the people with him will be destroyed."	16 Faites donc porter promptement à David cette nouvelle : Ne demeurez pas cette nuit dans les plaines du désert ; mais passez au plus tôt le Jourdain, de peur qu'il ne périsse lui et tous ses gens.
17 Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying at En-rogel, since they could not risk being seen entering the city. A maidservant was to come with information for them, and they in turn were to go and report to King David.	17 Or Jonathas et Achimaas étaient près de la fontaine de Rogel, n'osant se montrer ni entrer dans la ville ; et une (la) servante alla les avertir de tout cela. Ils partirent donc pour en porter la nouvelle au roi David.
18 But an attendant saw them and informed Absalom. They sped on their way and reached the house of a man in Bahurim who had a cistern in his courtyard. They let themselves down into this,	18 Il arriva néanmoins qu'un jeune homme les vit, et en avertit Absalom ; mais ils entrèrent aussitôt chez un homme de Bahurim, qui avait un puits à l'entrée de sa maison ; et ils descendirent dans le puits.
19 and the housewife took the cover and spread it over the cistern, strewing ground grain on the cover so that nothing could be noticed.	19 Et la femme (de cet homme) étendit une couverture sur la bouche du puits, comme si elle eût fait sécher des grains pilés (de l'orge mondé) ; ainsi la chose demeura cachée.
20 When Absalom's servants came to the woman at the house, they asked, "Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?" The woman replied, "They went by a short while ago toward the water." They searched, but found no one, and so returned to Jerusalem.	20 Les serviteurs d'Absalom étant venus dans cette maison, dirent à la femme : Où sont Achimaas et Jonathas ? Elle leur répondit : Ils ont pris un peu d'eau, et ont passé bien vite. Ainsi ceux qui les cherchaient, ne les ayant point trouvés, revinrent à Jérusalem.
21 As soon as they left, Ahimaaz and Jonathan came up out of the cistern and went on to inform King David. They said to him: "Leave! Cross the water at once, for Ahithophel has given the following counsel in regard to you."	21 Après qu'ils furent partis, Achimaas et Jonathas sortirent du puits, continuèrent leur chemin, et vinrent dire à David : Levez-vous, et passez le fleuve (au plus tôt), parce qu'Achitophel a donné tel conseil contre vous.
22 So David and all his people moved on and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak, there was no one left who had not crossed.	22 David se leva donc avec tous ses gens, et passa le Jourdain avant la pointe du jour, sans qu'il en demeurât un seul au-delà du fleuve.
23 When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not acted upon, he saddled his ass and departed, going to his home in his own city. Then, having left orders concerning his family, he hanged himself. And so he died and was buried in his father's tomb.	23 Or (Mais) Achitophel, voyant qu'on n'avait pas suivi le conseil qu'il avait donné, fit seller son âne et s'en alla à la maison qu'il avait dans sa ville de Gilo ; et ayant disposé de toutes ses affaires, il se pendit, et fut enseveli dans le sépulcre de son père.
24 Now David had gone to Mahanaim when Absalom crossed the Jordan accompanied by all the Israelites.	24 David vint ensuite au camp, et Absalom, suivi de tout Israël, passa aussi le Jourdain.
25 Absalom had put Amasa in command of the army in Joab's place. Amasa was the son of an Ishmaelite named Ithra, who had married Abigail, daughter of Jesse and sister of Joab's mother Zeruiah.	25 Absalom fit général de son armée, au lieu de Joab, Amasa, fils d'un homme de Jezraël, nommé Jétra, qui avait épousé Abigaïl, fille de Naas, et sœur de Sarvia, mère de Joab.
26 Israel and Absalom encamped in the territory of Gilead.	26 Or Israël campa avec Absalom dans le pays de Galaad.
27 When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi, son of Nahash from Rabbah of the Ammonites, Machir, son of Ammiel from Lodebar, and Barzillai, the Gileadite from Rogelim,	27 David étant venu au camp, Sobi, fils de Naas, de Rabbath, ville des Ammonites, Machir, fils d'Ammihel, de Lodabar, (et) Berzellaï, de Rogelim en Galaad,
28 brought couches, coverlets, basins and earthenware, as well as wheat, barley, flour, roasted grain, beans, lentils,	28 lui offrirent des lits, des tapis, des vases de terre, du blé, de l'orge, de la farine, du blé séché au feu (grains rôtis), des fèves, des lentilles et des pois frits (grillés),
29 honey, butter and cheese from the flocks and herds, for David and those who were with him to eat; for they said, "The people have been hungry and tired and thirsty in the desert."	29 du miel, du beurre, des brebis et des veaux gras. Ils apportèrent tout cela à David, et à ceux qui le suivaient ; car ils soupçonnèrent que le peuple, après avoir traversé le désert, était abattu de faim, de soif et de lassitude.
