NEW AMERICAN BIBLELXX
When Jacob learned that grain rations were available in Egypt, he said to his sons: "Why do you keep gaping at one another?1 ιδων δε ιακωβ οτι εστιν πρασις εν αιγυπτω ειπεν τοις υιοις αυτου ινα τι ραθυμειτε
I hear," he went on, "that rations of grain are available in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us, that we may stay alive rather than die of hunger."2 ιδου ακηκοα οτι εστιν σιτος εν αιγυπτω καταβητε εκει και πριασθε ημιν μικρα βρωματα ινα ζωμεν και μη αποθανωμεν
So ten of Joseph's brothers went down to buy an emergency supply of grain from Egypt.3 κατεβησαν δε οι αδελφοι ιωσηφ οι δεκα πριασθαι σιτον εξ αιγυπτου
It was only Joseph's full brother Benjamin that Jacob did not send with the rest, for he thought some disaster might befall him.4 τον δε βενιαμιν τον αδελφον ιωσηφ ουκ απεστειλεν μετα των αδελφων αυτου ειπεν γαρ μηποτε συμβη αυτω μαλακια
Thus, since there was famine in the land of Canaan also, the sons of Israel were among those who came to procure rations.5 ηλθον δε οι υιοι ισραηλ αγοραζειν μετα των ερχομενων ην γαρ ο λιμος εν γη χανααν
It was Joseph, as governor of the country, who dispensed the rations to all the people. When Joseph's brothers came and knelt down before him with their faces to the ground,6 ιωσηφ δε ην αρχων της γης ουτος επωλει παντι τω λαω της γης ελθοντες δε οι αδελφοι ιωσηφ προσεκυνησαν αυτω επι προσωπον επι την γην
he recognized them as soon as he saw them. But he concealed his own identity from them and spoke sternly to them. "Where do you come from?" he asked them. They answered, "From the land of Canaan, to procure food."7 ιδων δε ιωσηφ τους αδελφους αυτου επεγνω και ηλλοτριουτο απ' αυτων και ελαλησεν αυτοις σκληρα και ειπεν αυτοις ποθεν ηκατε οι δε ειπαν εκ γης χανααν αγορασαι βρωματα
When Joseph recognized his brothers, although they did not recognize him,8 επεγνω δε ιωσηφ τους αδελφους αυτου αυτοι δε ουκ επεγνωσαν αυτον
he was reminded of the dreams he had about them. He said to them: "You are spies. You have come to see the nakedness of the land."9 και εμνησθη ιωσηφ των ενυπνιων ων ειδεν αυτος και ειπεν αυτοις κατασκοποι εστε κατανοησαι τα ιχνη της χωρας ηκατε
"No, my lord," they replied. "On the contrary, your servants have come to procure food.10 οι δε ειπαν ουχι κυριε οι παιδες σου ηλθομεν πριασθαι βρωματα
All of us are sons of the same man. We are honest men; your servants have never been spies."11 παντες εσμεν υιοι ενος ανθρωπου ειρηνικοι εσμεν ουκ εισιν οι παιδες σου κατασκοποι
But he answered them: "Not so! You have come to see the nakedness of the land."12 ειπεν δε αυτοις ουχι αλλα τα ιχνη της γης ηλθατε ιδειν
"We your servants," they said, "were twelve brothers, sons of a certain man in Canaan; but the youngest one is at present with our father, and the other one is gone."13 οι δε ειπαν δωδεκα εσμεν οι παιδες σου αδελφοι εν γη χανααν και ιδου ο νεωτερος μετα του πατρος ημων σημερον ο δε ετερος ουχ υπαρχει
"It is just as I said," Joseph persisted; "you are spies.14 ειπεν δε αυτοις ιωσηφ τουτο εστιν ο ειρηκα υμιν λεγων οτι κατασκοποι εστε
This is how you shall be tested: unless your youngest brother comes here, I swear by the life of Pharaoh that you shall not leave here.15 εν τουτω φανεισθε νη την υγιειαν φαραω ου μη εξελθητε εντευθεν εαν μη ο αδελφος υμων ο νεωτερος ελθη ωδε
So send one of your number to get your brother, while the rest of you stay here under arrest. Thus shall your words be tested for their truth; if they are untrue, as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!"16 αποστειλατε εξ υμων ενα και λαβετε τον αδελφον υμων υμεις δε απαχθητε εως του φανερα γενεσθαι τα ρηματα υμων ει αληθευετε η ου ει δε μη νη την υγιειαν φαραω η μην κατασκοποι εστε
With that, he locked them up in the guardhouse for three days.17 και εθετο αυτους εν φυλακη ημερας τρεις
On the third day Joseph said to them: "Do this, and you shall live; for I am a God-fearing man.18 ειπεν δε αυτοις τη ημερα τη τριτη τουτο ποιησατε και ζησεσθε τον θεον γαρ εγω φοβουμαι
If you have been honest, only one of your brothers need be confined in this prison, while the rest of you may go and take home provisions for your starving families.19 ει ειρηνικοι εστε αδελφος υμων εις κατασχεθητω εν τη φυλακη αυτοι δε βαδισατε και απαγαγετε τον αγορασμον της σιτοδοσιας υμων
But you must come back to me with your youngest brother. Your words will thus be verified, and you will not die." To this they agreed.20 και τον αδελφον υμων τον νεωτερον αγαγετε προς με και πιστευθησονται τα ρηματα υμων ει δε μη αποθανεισθε εποιησαν δε ουτως
To one another, however, they said: "Alas, we are being punished because of our brother. We saw the anguish of his heart when he pleaded with us, yet we paid no heed; that is why this anguish has now come upon us."21 και ειπεν εκαστος προς τον αδελφον αυτου ναι εν αμαρτια γαρ εσμεν περι του αδελφου ημων οτι υπερειδομεν την θλιψιν της ψυχης αυτου οτε κατεδεετο ημων και ουκ εισηκουσαμεν αυτου ενεκεν τουτου επηλθεν εφ' ημας η θλιψις αυτη
"Didn't I tell you," broke in Reuben, "not to do wrong to the boy? But you wouldn't listen! Now comes the reckoning for his blood."22 αποκριθεις δε ρουβην ειπεν αυτοις ουκ ελαλησα υμιν λεγων μη αδικησητε το παιδαριον και ουκ εισηκουσατε μου και ιδου το αιμα αυτου εκζητειται
They did not know, of course, that Joseph understood what they said, since he spoke with them through an interpreter.23 αυτοι δε ουκ ηδεισαν οτι ακουει ιωσηφ ο γαρ ερμηνευτης ανα μεσον αυτων ην
But turning away from them, he wept. When he was able to speak to them again, he had Simeon taken from them and bound before their eyes.24 αποστραφεις δε απ' αυτων εκλαυσεν ιωσηφ και παλιν προσηλθεν προς αυτους και ειπεν αυτοις και ελαβεν τον συμεων απ' αυτων και εδησεν αυτον εναντιον αυτων
Then Joseph gave orders to have their containers filled with grain, their money replaced in each one's sack, and provisions given them for their journey. After this had been done for them,25 ενετειλατο δε ιωσηφ εμπλησαι τα αγγεια αυτων σιτου και αποδουναι το αργυριον εκαστου εις τον σακκον αυτου και δουναι αυτοις επισιτισμον εις την οδον και εγενηθη αυτοις ουτως
they loaded their donkeys with the rations and departed.26 και επιθεντες τον σιτον επι τους ονους αυτων απηλθον εκειθεν
At the night encampment, when one of them opened his bag to give his donkey some fodder, he was surprised to see his money in the mouth of his bag.27 λυσας δε εις τον μαρσιππον αυτου δουναι χορτασματα τοις ονοις αυτου ου κατελυσαν ειδεν τον δεσμον του αργυριου αυτου και ην επανω του στοματος του μαρσιππου
"My money has been returned!" he cried out to his brothers. "Here it is in my bag!" At that their hearts sank. Trembling, they asked one another, "What is this that God has done to us?"28 και ειπεν τοις αδελφοις αυτου απεδοθη μοι το αργυριον και ιδου τουτο εν τω μαρσιππω μου και εξεστη η καρδια αυτων και εταραχθησαν προς αλληλους λεγοντες τι τουτο εποιησεν ο θεος ημιν
When they got back to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them.29 ηλθον δε προς ιακωβ τον πατερα αυτων εις γην χανααν και απηγγειλαν αυτω παντα τα συμβαντα αυτοις λεγοντες
"The man who is lord of the country," they said, "spoke to us sternly and put us in custody as if we were spying on the land.30 λελαληκεν ο ανθρωπος ο κυριος της γης προς ημας σκληρα και εθετο ημας εν φυλακη ως κατασκοπευοντας την γην
But we said to him: 'We are honest men; we have never been spies.31 ειπαμεν δε αυτω ειρηνικοι εσμεν ουκ εσμεν κατασκοποι
There were twelve of us brothers, sons of the same father; but one is gone, and the youngest one is at present with our father in the land of Canaan.'32 δωδεκα αδελφοι εσμεν υιοι του πατρος ημων ο εις ουχ υπαρχει ο δε μικροτερος μετα του πατρος ημων σημερον εν γη χανααν
Then the man who is lord of the country said to us: 'This is how I shall know if you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me, while the rest of you go home with rations for your starving families.33 ειπεν δε ημιν ο ανθρωπος ο κυριος της γης εν τουτω γνωσομαι οτι ειρηνικοι εστε αδελφον ενα αφετε ωδε μετ' εμου τον δε αγορασμον της σιτοδοσιας του οικου υμων λαβοντες απελθατε
When you come back to me with your youngest brother, and I know that you are honest men and not spies, I will restore your brother to you, and you may move about freely in the land.'"34 και αγαγετε προς με τον αδελφον υμων τον νεωτερον και γνωσομαι οτι ου κατασκοποι εστε αλλ' οτι ειρηνικοι εστε και τον αδελφον υμων αποδωσω υμιν και τη γη εμπορευεσθε
When they were emptying their sacks, there in each one's sack was his moneybag! At the sight of their moneybags, they and their father were dismayed.35 εγενετο δε εν τω κατακενουν αυτους τους σακκους αυτων και ην εκαστου ο δεσμος του αργυριου εν τω σακκω αυτων και ειδον τους δεσμους του αργυριου αυτων αυτοι και ο πατηρ αυτων και εφοβηθησαν
Their father Jacob said to them: "Must you make me childless? Joseph is gone, and Simeon is gone, and now you would take away Benjamin! Why must such things always happen to me?"36 ειπεν δε αυτοις ιακωβ ο πατηρ αυτων εμε ητεκνωσατε ιωσηφ ουκ εστιν συμεων ουκ εστιν και τον βενιαμιν λημψεσθε επ' εμε εγενετο παντα ταυτα
Then Reuben told his father: "Put him in my care, and I will bring him back to you. You may kill my own two sons if I do not return him to you."37 ειπεν δε ρουβην τω πατρι αυτου λεγων τους δυο υιους μου αποκτεινον εαν μη αγαγω αυτον προς σε δος αυτον εις την χειρα μου καγω αναξω αυτον προς σε
But Jacob replied: "My son shall not go down with you. Now that his full brother is dead, he is the only one left. If some disaster should befall him on the journey you must make, you would send my white head down to the nether world in grief."38 ο δε ειπεν ου καταβησεται ο υιος μου μεθ' υμων οτι ο αδελφος αυτου απεθανεν και αυτος μονος καταλελειπται και συμβησεται αυτον μαλακισθηναι εν τη οδω η αν πορευησθε και καταξετε μου το γηρας μετα λυπης εις αδου
