NEW AMERICAN BIBLEJERUSALEM
When Joseph was taken down to Egypt, a certain Egyptian (Potiphar, a courtier of Pharaoh and his chief steward) bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him there.1 Joseph avait donc été emmené en Egypte. Potiphar, eunuque de Pharaon et commandant desgardes, un Egyptien, l'acheta aux Ismaélites qui l'avaient emmené là-bas.
But since the LORD was with him, Joseph got on very well and was assigned to the household of his Egyptian master.2 Or Yahvé assista Joseph, à qui tout réussit, et il resta dans la maison de son maître, l'Egyptien.
When his master saw that the LORD was with him and brought him success in whatever he did,3 Comme son maître voyait que Yahvé l'assistait et faisait réussir entre ses mains tout ce qu'ilentreprenait,
he took a liking to Joseph and made him his personal attendant; he put him in charge of his household and entrusted to him all his possessions.4 Joseph trouva grâce à ses yeux: il fut attaché au service du maître, qui l'institua son majordome etlui confia tout ce qui lui appartenait.
From the moment that he put him in charge of his household and all his possessions, the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; in fact, the LORD'S blessing was on everything he owned, both inside the house and out.5 Et, à partir du moment où il l'eut préposé à sa maison et à ce qui lui appartenait, Yahvé bénit lamaison de l'Egyptien, en considération de Joseph: la bénédiction de Yahvé atteignit tout ce qu'il possédait à lamaison et aux champs.
Having left everything he owned in Joseph's charge, he gave no thought, with Joseph there, to anything but the food he ate.
After a time, his master's wife began to look fondly at him and said, "Lie with me."7 Il arriva, après ces événements, que la femme de son maître jeta les yeux sur Joseph et dit: "Coucheavec moi!"
But he refused. "As long as I am here," he told her, "my master does not concern himself with anything in the house, but has entrusted to me all he owns.8 Mais il refusa et dit à la femme de son maître: "Avec moi, mon maître ne se préoccupe pas de cequi se passe à la maison et il m'a confié tout ce qui lui appartient.
He wields no more authority in this house than I do, and he has withheld from me nothing but yourself, since you are his wife.
Although she tried to entice him day after day, he would not agree to lie beside her, or even stay near her.10 Bien qu'elle parlât à Joseph chaque jour, il ne consentit pas à coucher à son côté, à se donner àelle.
One such day, when Joseph came into the house to do his work, and none of the household servants were then in the house,11 Or, un certain jour, Joseph vint à la maison pour faire son service et il n'y avait là, dans la maison, aucun des domestiques.
she laid hold of him by his cloak, saying, "Lie with me!" But leaving the cloak in her hand, he got away from her and ran outside.12 La femme le saisit par son vêtement en disant: "Couche avec moi!" mais il abandonna le vêtemententre ses mains, prit la fuite et sortit.
When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand as he fled outside,13 Voyant qu'il avait laissé le vêtement entre ses mains et qu'il s'était enfui dehors,
she screamed for her household servants and told them, "Look! my husband has brought in a Hebrew slave to make sport of us! He came in here to lie with me, but I cried out as loud as I could.14 elle appela ses domestiques et leur dit: "Voyez cela!
She kept the cloak with her until his master came home.16 Elle déposa le vêtement à côté d'elle en attendant que le maître vint à la maison.
Then she told him the same story: "The Hebrew slave whom you brought here broke in on me, to make sport of me.17 Alors, elle lui dit les mêmes paroles: "L'esclave hébreu que tu nous as amené m'a approchée pourbadiner avec moi
But when I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and fled outside."18 et, quand j'ai élevé la voix et appelé, il a laissé son vêtement près de moi et il s'est enfui dehors."
As soon as the master heard his wife's story about how his slave had treated her, he became enraged.19 Lorsque le mari entendit ce que lui disait sa femme: "Voilà de quelle manière ton esclave a agienvers moi", sa colère s'enflamma.
He seized Joseph and threw him into the jail where the royal prisoners were confined. But even while he was in prison,20 Le maître de Joseph le fit saisir et mettre en geôle, là où étaient détenus les prisonniers du roi.Ainsi, il demeura en geôle.
the LORD remained with Joseph; he showed him kindness by making the chief jailer well-disposed toward him.21 Mais Yahvé assista Joseph, il étendit sur lui sa bonté et lui fit trouver grâce aux yeux du geôlierchef.
The chief jailer put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners in the jail, and everything that had to be done there was done under his management.22 Le geôlier chef confia à Joseph tous les détenus qui étaient en geôle; tout ce qui s'y faisait sefaisait par lui.
The chief jailer did not concern himself with anything at all that was in Joseph's charge, since the LORD was with him and brought success to all he did.23 Le geôlier chef ne s'occupait en rien de ce qui lui était confié, parce que Yahvé l'assistait et faisaitréussir ce qu'il entreprenait.
