Genesis 34

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Dinah, the daughter whom Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit some of the women of the land.	1 Dina, la fille que Léa avait donnée à Jacob, sortit pour aller voir les filles du pays.
2 When Shechem, son of Hamor the Hivite, who was chief of the region, saw her, he seized her and lay with her by force.	2 Sichem, le fils de Hamor le Hivvite, prince du pays, la vit et, l'ayant enlevée, il coucha avec elle etlui fit violence.
3 Since he was strongly attracted to Dinah, daughter of Jacob, indeed was really in love with the girl, he endeavored to win her affection.	3 Mais son cœur s'attacha à Dina, fille de Jacob, il eut de l'amour pour la jeune fille et il parla à soncœur.
4 Shechem also asked his father Hamor, "Get me this girl for a wife."	4 Sichem parla ainsi à son père Hamor: "Prends-moi cette petite pour femme."
5 Meanwhile, Jacob heard that Shechem had defiled his daughter Dinah; but since his sons were out in the fields with his livestock, he held his peace until they came home.	5 Jacob avait appris qu'il avait déshonoré sa fille Dina, mais comme ses fils étaient aux champs avecson troupeau, Jacob garda le silence jusqu'à leur retour.
6 Now Hamor, the father of Shechem, went out to discuss the matter with Jacob,	6 Hamor, le père de Sichem, se rendit chez Jacob pour lui parler.
7 just as Jacob's sons were coming in from the fields. When they heard the news, the men were shocked and seethed with indignation. What Shechem had done was an outrage in Israel; such a thing could not be tolerated.	7 Lorsque les fils de Jacob revinrent des champs et apprirent cela, ces hommes furent indignés etentrèrent en grand courroux de ce qu'il avait commis une infamie en Israël en couchant avec la fille de Jacob:cela ne doit pas se faire!
8 Hamor appealed to them, saying: "My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him in marriage.	8 Hamor leur parla ainsi: "Mon fils Sichem s'est épris de votre fille, veuillez la lui donner pourfemme.
9 Intermarry with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.	9 Alliez-vous à nous: vous nous donnerez vos filles et vous prendrez les nôtres pour vous.
10 Thus you can live among us. The land is open before you; you can settle and move about freely in it, and acquire landed property here."	10 Vous demeurerez avec nous et le pays vous sera ouvert: vous pourrez y habiter, y circuler, vous yétablir."
11 Then Shechem, too, appealed to Dinah's father and brothers: "Do me this favor, and I will pay whatever you demand of me.	11 Sichem dit au père et aux frères de la jeune fille: "Que je trouve grâce à vos yeux et je donnerai ceque vous me demanderez!
12 No matter how high you set the bridal price, I will pay you whatever you ask; only give me the maiden in marriage."	12 Imposez-moi une grosse somme, comme prix et comme présent, je payerai autant que vous medemanderez, mais donnez-moi la jeune fille pour femme!"
13 Jacob's sons replied to Shechem and his father Hamor with guile, speaking as they did because their sister Dinah had been defiled.	13 Les fils de Jacob répondirent à Sichem et à son père Hamor et ils parlèrent avec ruse, parce qu'ilavait déshonoré leur sœur Dina.
14 "We could not do such a thing," they said, "as to give our sister to an uncircumcised man; that would be a disgrace for us.	14 Ils leur dirent: "Nous ne pouvons pas faire une chose pareille: donner notre sœur à un hommeincirconcis, car c'est un déshonneur chez nous.
15 We will agree with you only on this condition, that you become like us by having every male among you circumcised.	15 Nous ne vous donnerons notre consentement qu'à cette condition: c'est que vous deveniez commenous et fassiez circoncire tous vos mâles.
16 Then we will give you our daughters and take yours in marriage; we will settle among you and become one kindred people with you.	16 Alors nous vous donnerons nos filles et nous prendrons les vôtres pour nous, nous demeureronsavec vous et formerons un seul peuple.
17 But if you do not comply with our terms regarding circumcision, we will take our daughter and go away."	17 Mais si vous ne nous écoutez pas, touchant la circoncision, nous prendrons notre fille et nouspartirons."
18 Their proposal seemed fair to Hamor and his son Shechem.	18 Leurs paroles plurent à Hamor et à Sichem, fils de Hamor.
19 The young man lost no time in acting in the matter, since he was deeply in love with Jacob's daughter. Moreover he was more highly respected than anyone else in his clan.	19 Le jeune homme n'hésita pas à faire la chose, car il était épris de la fille de Jacob; or il était le plusconsidéré de toute sa famille.
20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to their town council and thus presented the matter to their fellow townsmen:	20 Hamor et son fils Sichem allèrent à la porte de leur ville et parlèrent ainsi aux hommes de leurville:
21 "These men are friendly toward us. Let them settle in the land and move about in it freely; there is ample room in the country for them. We can marry their daughters and give our daughters to them in marriage.	21 "Ces gens-là sont bien intentionnés: qu'ils demeurent avec nous dans le pays, ils y circuleront, lepays sera ouvert pour eux dans toute son étendue, nous prendrons leurs filles pour femmes et nous leurdonnerons nos filles.
22 But the men will agree to live with us and form one kindred people with us only on this condition, that every male among us be circumcised as they themselves are.	22 Mais ces gens ne consentiront à demeurer avec nous pour former un seul peuple qu'à cettecondition: c'est que tous nos mâles soient circoncis comme ils le sont eux-mêmes.
23 Would not the livestock they have acquired--all their animals--then be ours? Let us, therefore, give in to them, so that they may settle among us."	23 Leurs troupeaux, leurs biens, tout leur bétail ne seront-ils pas à nous? Donnons-leur seulementnotre consentement, pour qu'ils demeurent avec nous."
24 All the able-bodied men of the town agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and all the males, including every able-bodied man in the community, were circumcised.	24 Hamor et son fils Sichem furent écoutés par tous ceux qui ranchissaient la porte de leur ville, ettous les mâles se firent circoncire.
25 On the third day, while they were still in pain, Dinah's full brothers Simeon and Levi, two of Jacob's sons, took their swords, advanced against the city without any trouble, and massacred all the males.	25 Or, le troisième jour, tandis qu'ils étaient souffrants, les deux fils de Jacob, Siméon et Lévi, lesfrères de Dina, prirent chacun son épée et marchèrent sans opposition contre la ville: ils tuèrent tous les mâles.
26 After they had put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword, they took Dinah from Shechem's house and left.	26 Ils passèrent au fil de l'épée Hamor et son fils Sichem, enlevèrent Dina de la maison de Sichem etpartirent.
27 Then the other sons of Jacob followed up the slaughter and sacked the city in reprisal for their sister Dinah's defilement.	27 Les fils de Jacob assaillirent les blessés et pillèrent la ville, parce qu'on avait déshonoré leur sœur.
28 They seized their flocks, herds and asses, whatever was in the city and in the country around.	28 Ils prirent leur petit et leur gros bétail et leurs ânes, ce qui était dans la ville et ce qui était auxchamps.
29 They carried off all their wealth, their women, and their children, and took for loot whatever was in the houses.	29 Ils ravirent tous leurs biens, tous leurs enfants et leurs femmes, et ils pillèrent tout ce qu'il y avaitdans les maisons.
30 Jacob said to Simeon and Levi: "You have brought trouble upon me by making me loathsome to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I have so few men that, if these people unite against me and attack me, I and my family will be wiped out."	30 Jacob dit à Siméon et Lévi: "Vous m'avez mis en mauvaise posture en me rendant odieux auxhabitants du pays, les Cananéens et les Perizzites: j'ai peu d'hommes, ils se rassembleront contre moi, mevaincront et je serai anéanti avec ma maison."
31 But they retorted, "Should our sister have been treated like a harlot?"	31 Mais ils répliquèrent: "Devait-on traiter notre sœur comme une prostituée?"
