Genesis 26

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 There was a famine in the land (distinct from the earlier one that had occurred in the days of Abraham), and Isaac went down to Abimelech, king of the Philistines in Gerar.	1 - Ora, essendo venuta nella regione un'altra carestia, dopo quella al tempo d'Abramo, Isacco se n'andò ad Abimelec re dei Palestinesi in Gerara.
2 The LORD appeared to him and said: "Do not go down to Egypt, but continue to camp wherever in this land I tell you.	2 Gli apparve il Signore, e disse: «Non andare in Egitto, ma fermati nella terra che io ti dirò.
3 Stay in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I will give all these lands, in fulfillment of the oath that I swore to your father Abraham.	3 Sta' in quella come forestiere, ed io sarò con te ed alla tua discendenza darò tutte queste terre, adempiendo il giuramento ch'io feci al padre tuo Abramo.
4 I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and give them all these lands, and in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing--	4 Renderò la discendenza tua numerosa come le stelle del cielo; darò a' tuoi posteri tutte queste terre, e nella tua discendenza saranno benedette tutte le nazioni della terra,
5 this because Abraham obeyed me, keeping my mandate (my commandments, my ordinances, and my instructions)."	5 perchè Abramo obbedì alla mia voce, custodì i miei precetti e comandi, ed osservò gli statuti e le leggi».
6 So Isaac settled in Gerar.	6 Si fermò dunque Isacco in Gerara.
7 When the men of the place asked questions about his wife, he answered, "She is my sister." He was afraid, if he called her his wife, the men of the place would kill him on account of Rebekah, since she was very beautiful.	7 Interrogato dagli uomini di quel luogo riguardo a sua moglie, rispose: «È mia sorella». Ebbe infatti paura di manifestare che gli era legata in matrimonio, pensando che forse lo uccidessero, per la bellezza di lei.
8 But when he had been there for a long time, Abimelech, king of the Philistines, happened to look out of a window and was surprised to see Isaac fondling his wife Rebekah.	8 Ora, essendo già passato molto tempo da che egli dimorava quivi, Abimelec, re de' Palestinesi, guardando per la finestra lo vide che scherzava con Rebecca sua moglie.
9 He called for Isaac and said: "She must certainly be your wife! How could you have said, 'She is my sister'?" Isaac replied, "I thought I might lose my life on her account."	9 Laonde, chiamatolo gli disse: «Si vede bene che è tua moglie. Perchè hai detto falsamente che era tua sorella?». Rispose: «Ho avuto paura di morire per causa sua».
10 "How could you do this to us!" exclaimed Abimelech. "It would have taken very little for one of the men to lie with your wife, and you would have thus brought guilt upon us!"	10 Disse Abimelec: «Perchè ti sei imposto a noi? Qualcuno del popolo avrebbe potuto abusare della tua moglie, e ci avresti esposti ad un grande peccato». Comandò dunque a tutto il popolo, dicendo:
11 Abimelech therefore gave this warning to all his men: "Anyone who molests this man or his wife shall forthwith be put to death."	11 «Chi toccherà la moglie di quest'uomo, sarà messo a morte».
12 Isaac sowed a crop in that region and reaped a hundredfold the same year. Since the LORD blessed him,	12 Seminò dunque Isacco in quella terra, e l'anno stesso ne raccolse il centuplo, avendolo benedetto il Signore.
13 he became richer and richer all the time, until he was very wealthy indeed.	13 S'arricchì dunque, ed andò profittando ed accrescendosi, talchè divenne grande e potente,
14 He acquired such flocks and herds, and so many work animals, that the Philistines became envious of him.	14 e possedè greggi, armenti e servi in quantità. Per questo i Palestinesi n'ebbero invidia,
15 (The Philistines had stopped up and filled with dirt all the wells that his father's servants had dug back in the days of his father Abraham.)	15 e, tutti i pozzi che i servi del padre suo Abramo avevano scavati, essi in quel tempo li otturarono riempendoli di terra.
16 So Abimelech said to Isaac, "Go away from us; you have become far too numerous for us."	16 Tanto che lo stesso Abimelec disse ad Isacco: «Ritirati di fra noi, perchè sei diventato troppo più potente di noi».
17 Isaac left there and made the Wadi Gerar his regular campsite.	17 Ed egli partitosene, per venire al torrente di Gerara ed ivi fermarsi,
18 (Isaac reopened the wells which his father's servants had dug back in the days of his father Abraham and which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham's death; he gave them the same names that his father had given them.)	18 fece riaprire gli altri pozzi che i servi di Abramo padre suo avevano scavato, e che, lui morto, i Filistei avevano rinchiusi; e li chiamò con gli stessi nomi co' quali li aveva chiamati il padre.
19 But when Isaac's servants dug in the wadi and reached spring water in their well,	19 Scavarono dunque nel torrente, e trovarono l'acqua viva.
20 the shepherds of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's servants, saying, "The water belongs to us!" So the well was called Esek, because they had challenged him there.	20 Ma ivi appunto fu rissa tra i pastori di Isacco e quelli di Gerara che dicevano: «L'acqua è nostra». Perciò, a causa di quel che v'accadde, lo chiamò "Il pozzo della calunnia".
21 Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that one too; so it was called Sitnah.	21 Ne scavarono poi un altro; anche per quello vi fu rissa, e lo chiamò "Delle inimicizie".
22 When he had moved on from there, he dug still another well; but over this one they did not quarrel. It was called Rehoboth, because he said, "The LORD has now given us ample room, and we shall flourish in the land."	22 Partito di lì, scavò un altro pozzo, pel quale non vi fu questione; perciò gli mise nome "Della larghezza", dicendo: «Ora il Signore ci ha fatti allargare e crescere sulla terra».
23 From there Isaac went up to Beer-sheba.	23 Di lì poi salì in Bersabee,
24 The same night the LORD appeared to him and said: "I am the God of your father Abraham. You have no need to fear, since I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham."	24 dove, la notte stessa, gli apparve il Signore e gli disse: «Io sono il Dio di Abramo tuo padre; non temere, poichè son teco; ti benedirò, e moltiplicherò la tua stirpe a cagione d'Abramo mio servo».
25 So he built an altar there and invoked the LORD by name. After he had pitched his tent there, his servants began to dig a well nearby.	25 Ivi dunque edificò un altare, ed invocato il nome del Signore, vi stese le tende, e comandò ai servi di scavare un pozzo.
26 Abimelech had meanwhile come to him from Gerar, accompanied by Ahuzzath, his councilor, and Phicol, the general of his army.	26 Ed essendo venuto a quel luogo da Gerara Abimelec, Ocozat suo confidente, e Ficol capo de' soldati,
27 Isaac asked them, "Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me and have driven me away from you?"	27 disse loro Isacco: «Come mai siete venuti a me, uomo già da voi odiato e discacciato?».
28 They answered: "We are convinced that the LORD is with you, so we propose that there be a sworn agreement between our two sides--between you and us. Let us make a pact with you:	28 Quelli risposero: «Abbiamo visto che il Signore è con te; perciò abbiamo detto: - Sia fra noi un giuramento, e fermiamo il patto
29 you shall not act unkindly toward us, just as we have not molested you, but have always acted kindly toward you and have let you depart in peace. Henceforth, 'The LORD'S blessing be upon you!'"	29 che tu non faccia a noi nulla di male -; così anche noi niente abbiamo toccato del tuo, nè fatta cosa che ti offendesse, ma con pace ti abbiamo lasciato andare, prosperato dalla benedizione del Signore».
30 Isaac then made a feast for them, and they ate and drank.	30 Fece dunque Isacco a loro un convito; e dopo mangiato e bevuto,
31 Early the next morning they exchanged oaths. Then Isaac bade them farewell, and they departed from him in peace.	31 levatisi al mattino, si scambiarono il giuramento; quindi Isacco li lasciò partire in pace per il loro paese.
32 That same day Isaac's servants came and brought him news about the well they had been digging; they told him, "We have reached water!"	32 Ed ecco, in quello stesso giorno, vennero i servi d'Isacco a dirgli del pozzo che avevano scavato, e ad annunziargli: «Abbiamo trovato l'acqua».
33 He called it Shibah; hence the name of the city, Beer-sheba, to this day.	33 Laonde lo chiamò "Dell'abbondanza"; ed alla città fu dato il nome di Bersabee [che porta] anc'oggi.
34 When Esau was forty years old, he married Judith, daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, daughter of Elon the Hivite.	34 Ora Esaù, di quarant'anni, prese in moglie Iudit figlia di Beer heteo, e Basemat figlia di Helon, dello stesso luogo,
35 But they became a source of embitterment to Isaac and Rebekah.	35 le quali ambedue rattristarono l'animo di Isacco e di Rebecca.
